I'd like to try out a ROM or two. i was just wondering what would be the best method for backing up my phone before wiping/loading a new rom? I've seen several mentions of nandroid backup, but i haven't found a link yet as to how to use that.
Will the backup restore the ROM i had when i created the backup? Or will i have to flash that rom back on the phone and then run the restore to just get my apps/data back?
thanks
You can make a nandroid backup in your custom recovery. And the backup will restore your phone to how it was the moment you made the backup.
How do I do a custom recovery?

you are rooted and have nand unlocked, correct? if so, what method did you use?

rooted yes, not sure about nand. I used unrevoked to root the phone. I don't think unrevoked does the nand unlock. I'm not even clear on what nand unlocking is. So i hadn't looked into doing that yet since i didn't want to unlock 'it' until i knew what 'it' was
In for this answer... I titanium backed up but need to know if that's enough.
Ok - played around with the power btn+vol down menu and found nandroid and i am running a backup now.
What exactly is this backing up?
If i were to reinstall the original ROM from sprint on here, could i use this to restore the phone as i have it now? I assume i'd have to root the phone first in order to use the restore the backup?
thanks

1. It's backing up your nand.
There's an above post explaining this already.
2. Not necessary. Fully understand the answer to number 1.
3. Didn't you already root? You couldn't be doing this stuff otherwise.

Hi,
My first post.
I recently rooted using unrEVOked 3, did a Nandroid backup right after.
I would like to unlock NAND, but want to go back to my Nandroid backup after I unlock NAND.
After unlocking NAND can I run a Nandroid restore and just use my original Nandroid backup that was rooted?

Yes you can BUT if you aren't currently using a rooted stock rom this is going to cause issues and the root wont have that much of an effect as you wont have superuser "app" to allow you to grant su permission.
What i suggest is downloading titanium back up and having it back up all your apps + data. it is free int he market for a basic version (the paid version is EXTREMELY worth it as it allows for auto install of apps without having to click the install and ok buttons along with a few other very nice features) once yuo have all your apps and data backed up do the full nand. Then either flash the stock rooted rom or a custom rom of your choice (lots of great choices out there we have amazing devs working with evo) and then re download titanium back up and have it install apps.
this should give you everything back how it was except you may have to reput out your widgets. Once you have everything back to where you want it (widgets all apps ok etc) on the rom you choose i would go ahead and make a new nand so that you have a fall back in the future.
Unrevoked 3 would have rooted the phone so there won't be any problem with performing a full root (I recommend simpleroot) and installing the NAND

but unrevoked doesnt install a rooted rom does it? with out a rooted rom, the market for example wont work along with a few other things. So if he is on THE stock rom and nandroids back while it will in fact work ... it will have issues functioning fully. until he upgrades to a rooted rom whether it be a stock rooted or a custom rom.
this is all not an issue obviously if he already has a rooted rom (ie stock rooted or custom) that he has flashed to the phone. then no issues nandroid away.
If I run unrevoked3 on stock 1.47 (new Evo), can I restore a rooted 2.2 nandroid backup from my first Evo that was made with Amon_Ra? Would it work without engr. hboot? If so, could I be in trouble later by going to this rooted 2.2 backup w/o full root?
Had to bump this because I was curious to see how to restore a nandroid backup if I were to get a new phone for whatever reason.
Is it as simple as putting the sdcard from the old phone into the new rooted phone and performing a restore (assuming the same recovery method is used in both phones; in this case clockwork)?

It should be. the hardest part should be rooting your phone.
Ok, so I'm a noob at all this Rooting, Rom'ing, flashing and whatnot. Infact I'm a noob at Smartphones in general. The G2 is my first..
When I did the Clockwork flash of baconbits it asked me to backup, so I did. Is that the same thing as a nandroid backup that everyone talks about with such importance?
Or will I need to get a backup from somewhere? Would someone elses backup even work with my phone?
Yes.
......
lol. Sorry, my title and post are a bit jumbled. What were you saying yes to?
Do I even need a "nandroid" backup? Or is the clockwork backup I made the same thing?

I believe from what you said in the first post, yes it performed a nandroid backup, then flashed the kernal. If you want check in your clockwork folder on sd card and see if theres the backup you made earlier. I recommend putting that onto your pc in a safe place....just in case sd card gets error or somethtnig.

Yes, a backup in cm recovery is same as nandroid backup only it does it through the cm recovery as opposed to stock recovery.
There are stock roms with root and some other features provided in the development forum that you can flash using rom manager.
Thanks guys. Now that I've figured that out with your help, I have been having a blast trying all these roms. Next up is Villains stuff.
Hi guys! So I mess with my phone all the time, switching kernels etc. I am running the ARHD 7.1.0 ROM and I did a Nandroid backup in CWM just in case anything bad happens to it.
I came from a Galaxy S2 though and was thinking of some questions that came into my mind. It would be nice for u to tell me that:
1. Does the backup flashes the "boot.img" automatically? or u have to "fastboot flash boot boot.img"??
2. Does it backs up the kernel?
3. Does it backs up my personal data like the SMS, Contacts and settings etc?
4. What will happen if I restore my stock nandroid backup over this?
5. Can I restore some other person's HTC One X's Stock/Custom ROM backup? Will it work?
THANKS!! ^_^
what version of RUU u have there ? is it an Asia_India? 1.29.720.11?

1. Yes, it flashes the boot.img automatically no need to use adb.
2. Yes, it backs up the kernel you we're on when you made the backup.
3. Yes, the backup will restore things to the exact state your phone was in when you made the backup. But if your really paranoid use something like titanium backup first to back up SMS etc.
4. If you restore your stock backup it will return your phone to complete stock but you will keep root access.
5. Yes technically you could restore another person's backup but I'd be careful doing that as it may cause some problems with corruption.

Well there is some confusion.
A backup doesn't flash anything.
The restore won't flash the boot.img.
Hi. I backed up my phone using the backup method found here: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/28296/full-backup-of-non-rooted-devices
This method uses CMD and creates an android backup file (.ab) I want to unlock my bootloader and add the custom clockwork recovery. Of course unlocking the bootloader wipes everything. So if i were to restore everything with the .ab file, then do the custom recovey with the superuser thing, would that give me root, and would all of my apps and data be restored as they are right now?
Probably a stupid question, but i want to be completely 100% sure i won't mess up my phone. I know its going to void warranty, which would be a problem if i dropped it of course
Thanks
It should work yes, you can also backup apps with an app called carbon. Free in the playstore.
Then unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and make a backup of the stock rom in there right away too (needed when you want to go back to full stock for future updates) its called a nandroid backup.
Then root it and restore, or install a brand new custom already rooted rom
Thanks a lot
If it was a custom rom i chose to install, will it still restore? or would it need to be the original stock for the restore to work properly?

Afaik know you can restore apps on any rom with carbon. Watch out with restoring system data, it can crash the rom.
Because some custom roms have more changes and if you restore system parts it will break the rom. But apps should not be a problem. The most important thing is that you do a nandroid backup of the stock rom. The rest is easy to setup new in the worst case.
Brilliant. Thanks for the help, much apreciated.
Was half expecting an answer like that, i think i will give root stock a go, then probably when HTC stop updating i will be very tempted to give a custom a go.
Cheers
I have unlocked the bootloader, i think i have flashed the recovery, downloaded nandroid and still says i need root, so i downloaded the superuser thing and when i try to install the binary thing it says there is an error. Anything i can do?
Update: I have learnt Its all good now.
Good mate ! Have fun with your rooted phone
