How do you change the compression ratio of the camera? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know how to change the compression ratio when sending MMS? It is just set way to high. Thanks for any help.

You can change the resolution by going into settings(open the drawer on the left, press the gears, choose resolution), and selecting a lower resolution.
But, you could also download Handcent and it will resize pics for your before sending, that way you still have the higher resolution picture on your phone but send out the lower res one.

Thanks for the info. I guess what I meant to say is... When you go to send an MMS message and the picture is too large, the phone compresses the picture automatically, but in my opinion it is compressing far too much and I was looking for a way to control the compression. Thanks for any info.

i was looking this up the other day..the compression goes down to 52kb on some phones..kinda ridiculous. I know blackberry and i think the i*hone allow for bigger messages to be sent. If you find a workaround or a hack..please post it!

I have been looking for days and can't find anything at all other than a worthless app I found in the app store. It was super slow and I requested my money back. I think someone is gonna have to make something for it so you can choose your compression right before the picture attaches to the MMS.

One thing i always do is if im going to take a picture for MMS i use the 3MP option. 95% of the time the picture is small enough where it doesn't have to compress it at all. It's not 8MP but whoever you are sending it to wont be able to tell.

Yeah I was doing that the other day too and I discovered if you go 3mp in 4.3 mode, it is under the limit every time. Oh well maybe someday soon hopefully. But just think of it this way... 5 years ago the best phone on the market was the Motorola RAZR! Ha ha try and go back to that!!

Lag in the Xperia Camera while taking Pictures.

Hi,
I have used different roms, including the orignal one, i always face the problelm with the camera, when i press the camrea button to take the snap, it capture the photo after 2,3 seconds, and in that time, (pplz have moved, and its always blurr), how i can remove this Lag time for the camera, so it take the photo shot, as soon i press the camera button.
this is really irritating and annoying, Hope to get some true solution to it.
Regards
Jade
There is a quick fix to the lag. Go to focus options and choose the infinite one!
I tried via this way many time, but still facing lag problem while taking the pictures, the snap shot is taken after 1-2 seconds of pressing the camera key.
Is there any repair, or fix CAB for it , or some other solution.
Regards
Jade
General Tip
the easy way is to use sport mode (i made it the default scene mode). however you will always not like the color it get, but acceptable in bright light condition. Next, i set the focus to infinite, manual white balance. The rest will depend on your phone software/system configuration.
if you are willing/knowlege enough, i suggest to change the system cache (cache, repl, gdi, fat entry cache, block transfer) just big/small enough for your need. Too small = sluggish respond, too large = may unstable the phone, data lost/corrupt, random lockups.
Oh, do try the xperia x2 vga driver and sdcard tuneup if you haven't already.
Try HKLM/Software/HTC/Camera/Captparam and set CapKeyDelayTime to 0.

That's the one! Or use Xperia Tweak, and look for shutter delay in the camera section, if you don't want to edit the registry directly yourself.
does anybody have this problems with x1 camera..... the result of the picture is darker when you transfer it to a pc or upload it.... its only show the true color on the xperia image preview, when actually its too dark... any one ???

I just didn't find such entry in the X1 registry. Should I add one or whatever wrong with my machine?

Hi Paul,
Xperia Tweak 2.0 doesn't have the said camera section. May be a new version available, where can I get it? Thanks in advance for your advice.
oops, sorry... the option is in Advanced Config (I confuse the two applications, Advanced Config is much more comprehensive)
htc camera
sorry mate. that parameter does not exist on stock rom. unless it's already cooked or you install it yourself. and it's for htc cam app(which i think the iso speed option did not work. like i want 400, it capture in 201), not experia default one.

you got it all wrong. your handheld/camera/phone lcd display will never show the true color/contrast/etc output of the recorded image. they are very limited in everything and tend to trick your (inexperience) mind about how good/bad things are. think, winmo only output 65k(16bit) color. doesn't matter if your screen got 200 thousand+ or 16m color display screen. it's capped that way. what you're seeing have been through interpolation, resampling, device enhancement, bla..bla..bla. the real thing is on your desktop monitor(assuming it's decent and you didn't mess it up). gamma too low perhaps?

Expert Opinion?
I'm facing the same problem with Xperia X1 camera lagging, and blurry...
I'm using the default Xperia cam software.
Any expert care to provide a comprehensive solution to this problem?
Only fix : Sports mode + Infinite focus.

[Q] Picture when send MMS will NOT rotate

So when I take pictures with my phones camera upright, the gallery shows the picture correctly... but now when I send that same picture via MMS (from either build in messenger or Handcent) it rotates the photo 90 degrees.
Now if I send a photo taken by my DSLR, that was copied to the SD, or a screen shot by drocap2, this does not happen.
Anyone else have this problem?
Anyone know how to fix this?
Does anyone else have this problem??
yes I've noticed this too. Don't know what the fix is except to take photos sideways (for texting)...anyone?
This annoys the crap outta me. I haven't figured out a way to fix this other than taking pictures in landscape.

This is caused by the camera app, and how it tags the orientation. You can install a different app such as Pro Zoom 5X or something, and that should fix it. It sucks I know, but installing a different camera app should fix it (just try a free one first).

I thought maybe it was something when it compressed the image, but guess not.
The odd thing is, that in the gallery it is fine, just MMS is effected.
Is this something that can be addressed by developers?

I'm sorry, I thought you meant the Rom/Kernel developers fixing the problem in the Rom/Kernel itself. Yeah, the actual camera app probably could be fixed, but the problem is getting someone to do it. Not sure if anyone here wants to take the time to look at it when there are other camera apps that do not have this issue.
You could also try this camera. Its the MIUI camera. Just place it in system/app, might have to reboot.

I pushed theis to the system/app, Loaded it, but it still sends MMS image wrong
(Its only when sending MMS, with stock camera, or this camera)

The workaround I use to fix this is to crop the picture. Even just slightly in any gallery program. Then it orients correctly when attached. ^_^
Problem is the froyo epic ota. A Ginger leak corrects this issue. No way around it as far as I know. Start taking pics in landscape :-\

This was addressed many months ago. The simple answer is, yes, it could be fixed. But the fix is more complicated than the matter is worth. Recent digital cameras employ an accelerometer to determine how the camera is being held and thus dictate how computers and devices should orient the resultant picture. It does this via some sort of digital tag in the pictures coding that an application then reads. For some reason, the tag the Epic camera creates is then not properly read by the same phones messaging app. Frustrating? Sure. But is an mms that will be looked at for a matter of seconds before being discarded worth hours of effort to correct? The majority of developers have apparently decided it's not worth the effort, and this would greatly exceed my own knowledge.
Simple fix? Another messaging or camera app as suggested.
I came upon this save issue, but I have the Epic Touch 4G.
I take the pic, and with Handcent, the image is rotated 90° counter clockwise.
But with the Native message app, the picture is fine, and not rotated.
Would appear to be an app issue, but with the EVO 4G, the pic was not rotated using Handcent.
I'm a little confused on this one.

Might be pointless but I am asking for your support

Found the place to submit bugs or enhancement requests to the Android Development team. Created a request to get the output of the screen shots changed to JPG or to get option to select between JPG and PNG.
Please post your support at the link below. All it requires is for you to be signed into your google account.
Who knows....maybe this will work if it gets enough posts.

All you have to do is click the star....you do not need to comment....but you MUST click the star...it is on the left right next to "issue"....by clicking the star it increases the stars count which in turn supposedly drives the attention. Meaning more stars equals faster results

I don't really see it being a big deal but... done.
I honestly dont see the need for this. What's the big deal?
I'd rather file a feature request with XDA allowing us to upload PNGs instead of having XDA converting our crisp PNGs to blurry JPGs

actually that would be nice or even if Tapatalk as a whole did a better job with the conversion.
I don't think it is a big deal either really....but a simple change to JPG would eliminate the need for people relying on photobucket to post images or converting via paint...or as you said....having other apps try to convert.
Would just be so much easier if the screen shot was saved as a JPG from the start....wouldn't you agree?
I actually prefer .png and would rather camera photos were saved as .png also.
I think a user preference setting would be nice.

No. JPG is a lossy format and works by smoothing out fourier wavelets, or if you want it less scientific: blurrying out too sharp or crisp lines. This is an absolutely horribly format and compression technique to use on screenshots. It's good for photos, but an absolute disaster for anything where pixel-perfection matters. Both quality-wise and when it comes to compression-efficiency.
PNGs relies on RLE and similar non-lossy technologies and often produces smaller files for screenshots and since they are non-lossy always has better (perfect actually) visual quality.
So no. I dont want ugly and blurry JPG screenshots. I never want that. Which is why I suggested XDA get with the times instead and let us post PNGs.

I'm not sure you're thinking of the right format. Simply put: JPG scans the image for similar blocks of colour that are next to each other and groups them together as the same colour.
The compression method doesn't leave the image blurry and will generally leave lines intact, but instead leaves the image pixelated.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG#Effects_of_JPEG_compression
Which is why I would prefer a lossless format like .png and then still have the option to turn it in to a lossy format later if I want to upload it somewhere.

Said less simply, it actually uses a fourier transforms, quantizes the frequency matrix of that transform and runs RLE compression over the quantized matrix before mashing it all together using a huffman-alghorithm, trying to achieve a Shannons-ratio on the data.
The result is that small changes in colour etc can get erased, but also that maintaininging sharp edges during the quantization process is hard, because it requires an accurate frequency matrix.
And the JPG compression process works as well as it does because it does not bother with an accurate frequency matrix.
So yeah.
I stand by what I said.
Fair enough, looks like I've got some studying to do.
fair enough....I am down with simply getting a choice....that is all I am really after....that way us JPG guys can have our "flavor" and the PNG's can have theirs.
So vote...and specify a choice rather than JPG only.
PNGs are less adopted for the mass market although they produce better highly quality images, they weight more, but are more effective for plain colour images.
JPEG is more efficient at reproduction of images in a manner which keeps reproduction close to the original source, but with compression methods applied.
Already stated, but I wanted my two cents.

I'm with you in that I certainly prefer the lossless PNG format for screenshots, but unfortunately PNG doesn't support as much EXIF information as JPG, so for camera photos it's a worse format choice, even though the image quality would be better.
Now if these cameras could save in RAW....

Blurry Screenshot texts?

Idk why, but when I take a screenshot of my screen, whatever it may be, and I text it to someone, the screenshot is super blurry and distorted, but when I email it it's fine? My cousin's iPhone does not do this, and it's bugging me. Is it a compression issue?

Its purely application controlled. The mms apk compresses images before they are sent. If you check out a custom rom such as calkulins i believe he raises the compression limit allowing you to send larger file sizes. Alternately if you're not rooted and dont want to you might want to look into a 3rd party mms application such as gosms or handcent. I can't guarantee these to be different as i don't use them, but lots of people seem to have success.
I agree though. Stock mms is quite shades mcgee in this respect.

GS3 Camera Issue:take picture but when shows up in gallery much darker

I've tried to change the settings including the mode and exposure but same issue. Like I said when I am about to take a picture and looking at the screen, lighting is great, I take the picture but then when it hits the gallery it is so much darker.
Any ideas? I changed over from the nexus s which always took awsome pics and this is supposed to be better so any help would be appreciated.
I have not gone to a custom rom yet fyi.
appreciate the help
I notice that too. I think it's because the phone automatically turns brightness all the way up in the camera app, then it goes back to the brightness you set to when you exit the camera app. So that makes the picture turns out to look a lot darker.

thank you I will try that. low light shots seem to pose some challenges...and the flash washes out..gonna have to play around a bit with this to see if I can improve. Doesn't make sense that my nexus s seemed to take better shots but sure if I tweak some things I can get this on track
