How to become a superuser? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone help me?
I don't know how to become a superuser user.
When I'm in rom manager or in wireless tethering it always wanted to access to superuser.
Anybody know how?

If your on your phone more than you should be your a superuser.

Superuser is an app that blocks an applications access to root, allowing you to give that app permission first. Its to prevent an app to make changes to your ROM or whatever else without your knowledge or consent. Just hit allow when it pops up to use the app.

We're assuming you're rooted? Normally, the custom roms include superuser to allow for permissions but if you're not rooted than it's all for naught.

No, it's asking for a superuser access when I use wireless tether from the app market.
An other crap always askingg me for a superuser access.

Did you root your phone? If so you should have an app called superuser in your app drawer.

If it's an app you ran and trust just grant it and check remember and it won't keep asking.
If you don't have the super user app download it from the market assuming ur rooted.
must be rooted in order to install SU

and dont for get to take off your glasses and change into your costume in a phone booth. I heard of this other superuser who forgot to take off his glasses and his secret identity was found out! was ugly.
in all seriousness. It is asking you this question because some apps require a higher level permission which is granted by giving it super user permission. Assuming you are rooted and assuming you have the super user app you simply click allow if you trust the app asking for superuser. yo can tell it to remember and thus shouldn't be asked again for that app or you can have it ask you every time.
If you arent rooted then you have a whole bunch of research you need to do to get rooted. (not really hard just do a little searching). If you dont have the superuser app (look in your app drawer) and are rooted then download it form the market.
if you still have no clue what is going on i suggest sticking to stock for now as you will likely cause yourself a lot more issues until you do more research and learn a bit more about root/nand unlock what they are and what they allow etc.

Lol, thanks.
Yeah, I've done rooting and everything already. I've done it the hardest way with the G1.

How To Root Samsung Continuum

Hi,
The Samsung Continuum is rooted courtesy Z4Root One Click App. You can either get it from official thread here or follow the instructions posted here. don't know if there are any custom ROM for continuum yet.

Or you can just download it from the Market, and run it...
Z4root is down from the market. I don't really about other countries, but here keyword search is showing nothing as Z4root. Can you please check if Z4root is available in your market?

I stand corrected... I just downloaded it from the market about a week ago so I assumed it was still there. It is gone now.
No word on any developers working on ROMs for this thing yet...
z4root
I temporarily rooted no problem with z4root, removed tons of Verizon bloatware.

Be careful with that. OTAs may look for all of their bloatware before installing... It could make upgrading to Froyo more difficult.
Can anyone confirm whether the Fascinate Clockwork Recovery works on the Continuum. I read on another forum that it does, but would like some better confirmation before I try it out....
Of course, that doesn't really matter until we get some ROMs going..... Please, devs, we need you....
Continuum ROM
I have the source code from Samsung and would work on a ROM if someone could get me started. This is my first Android and I rooted with Z4. I deleted a bunch of Verizon crap and now am having outgoing text messages not getting to some recipients. I would love a stock ROM.
I came from using the Nexus One. XDA forums for that device were loaded with devs and goodies. I miss all the action and running Cyanogen ROMs.
What ROMs are best for the other Galaxy S devices? I'd offer a small donation to get the ball rolling.

I for some reason cannot root using z4root. Have downloaded it from here and also the Market on the Samsung Continuum and it does not seem to work. After installing and loading, touching permanent/temporary root seems to have no effect. The 'loading' graphic sits there and the app hangs at running the exploit. Sometimes it even locks the phone to the point where I can only get it to respond by pulling out the battery.
USB debugging is enabled on the device running: 2.1-update1
Build number SCH-I400.DJ20
If you need any other info (or if I am missing something) let me know.
It took me a few tries, but I was successful with the temporary root.

texting issue
HI All,
I posted above about having texting issues after removing bloatware. It turns out that it was the way Google was adding a +1 to my phone numbers. Back to customizing. Z4 worked for me.

Seems to be par for the course with z4. Something randomly done or happens with the phone and by some sort of divine intervention or coincidence it's then rooted.
I also had issues with z4, hardlocked the phone the first time. Second time it FC'd. Third time I was waiting and got a text message. As I was replying to it, z4 popped back up and said rebooting phone. It rebooted and it was rooted.
I actually got it to work after trying and trying and trying. Now to find a Google Quick Search widget that isn't bugged and doesn't stick to the top of the homescreen after clicking on/touching/using it.
Finally got my phone rooted with Z4. Now can't connect to my computer. Gives me the option on whether to use a media card or USB storage. Chose both options (not at same time) and neither worked. Am tempted to remove root as it connected prior to rooting. Has anyone connected after rooting? Any help?
Thanks
Not sure what your issue is. I have my phone rooted and have no problem mounting my phone to my PC.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Is USB debugging checked or unchecked under settings, apps? Probably missing something stupid..

Does no permission = safe app?

If an app requires no special permission to install, does that mean it is a safe app to install and I don't have to worry about malware?
I'd say so. Apps like a simple clock widget with a plethora of permissions are what you need to look out for.
As long as it is not a root app, yes.

If you ever have doubt due to the description/pictures/comments, chances are it's something fishy. Always check their other apps, see what the comments say.
And, you can never go wrong with Google-ing the app name and/or app author.

Especially this ^
I would worry most about apps that have permissions that make zero sense. (Related to the apps function)
*cough* Facebook app with full messaging permissions *cough*
Thanks for the reply. I'm only asking because of apps that are new to the market that don't require any permission. Since the apps are new, there are not many comments to read and not much available when googling the app.
Also, how do I know if an app is a root app?

It will either state "root required" in the description or have [root] in the name of the app.
Or both.

When you first open it, the app will require you to grant it root access. If it doesn't and you think it's using superuser, you can check within the superuser app.

[Q] Does rooting on stock ROM causes any security threats/vulnerability.?

Hi,
I am about to root my Galaxy note II GT-N7100 on stock ROM.
Before doing that, I wanted to confirm weather rooting (on stock ROM) causes any security threats/vulnerability to user/device.?
I don't want people to steal my calls/communications & other private data like photos, videos, documents etc.
Thanks..
You can answer your own questions by learning what is rooting or gaining root access.

That's fine with me. I am doing that too. :good:
But taking second opinion is always a good idea.
Also, suggestions and explanations from experts boosts the confidence in the right way. :good:
As always with root related questions I think one should ask if they need the root access or not. For me many years I used my android devices without needing it. But now I dont think I can have a device without root.
Rooting allows many things and yes also opens your phones system to be altered...
But again root access controlled by SU so you know who or which app is requiring root access and it is down to you to give or deny permission when this happens.

Block Apps from Seeing Root

Anyone know a way to block apps from seeing root? My work requires an app to get access to the exchange server, but it checks to see if I'm rooted. I reverted back to stock after not finding a good solution, but I miss CM so I'm hoping there's a way...

I think (keyword:think) MIUI from Notorious has that option. You could try that.
Be sure to read your company's policy though, because it may be illegal to do that.

Great idea, but would that stop the app from running as root or checking for root? My company app doesn't need root to run but it checks randomly for root access....

My bad, I think it only blocks root on a per app basis. Your companies' server will probably still see phone root access.

First of all this thread doesn't belong in the development section.
Something is requesting SU from time to time, maybe a "scheduled backup", "xposed tweak" etc.
Open superuser app and check the log.
Each su request will be logged unless you have disabled logging ofc.
You might also want to disable notifications/toast messages from SU app.
