how to unroot phone - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i am rooted on OFFICIAL 2.2 update and i need to unroot phone as soon as possible. i just bought my phone just less then a month ago and i am recently having a problem with the front speaker where when i am making a phone call it will make a static noise. i bought my phone on the 5th of september and it is the 3rd of october as i write this so i have 2 days left to have unroot phone back to stock and return it. so can some one help me with this?
or do i not even need to unroot it or can i just put the phone in the box how it is and maybe they wont even notice? idk i need help

I just had to do the same. I can't paste links yet, but if you google "how to downgrade and root your dinc from 2.2", it's the very first link.
Just SKIP the last part where you run Unrevoked on it again. If you have s-off, you'll want to run the "unrevoked forever s-on" tool from Unrevoked's site.
Lastly, let the phone download and install the OTA upgrade. You should be golden from here.

or just back up your data to sd card and brick it...they'll give you a new one

How do you brick it?

fry it some how.. car battery to the pos and neg of ur battery plug in is how id try first

Man from the sounds of it too they really put froyo through its paces to be unrootable so I do wish you luck and hope someone roots froyo soon for ya but I wouldnt hold your breath it took a week or two to root 1.4.7 and took almost 600$ is bounty to get someone to work on it even I mean what dev really needs to sit and mess with rooting froyo when there probally making roms or kernals so whats the insentive
If they already put FroYo on your phone then they put an unofficial release on it.
I would go back and tell them about all the problems you are having with the unofficial release and demand they replace your replacement.
yeah same thing. i flashed back to unrooted 2.1 and then applied the update to see how it ran and i cant root it. it sucks. there has to be some way to make the 1.32.651.6 an updateable file. just dont know how
Why call it "unofficial" release?

I returned my Incredible after the first week due to this stupid OTA update, and got a new incredible. Rooted it soon as I got home. Screw that update and waiting for a fix!
what did u tell them to get a new one?
First I called tech support and said it rebooted and was force closing. They had me do a factory reset.
Next day I went to store and told them about previous tech support, but told them it hadn't force closed anymore, but it continued to randomly reboot.
The tech guy asked if I had accepted the update, and I stated I had. He immediately said that was the cause of my problems, and swapped out the phone.
He said his girlfriend had an Incredible from day one, and when she accepted the update the other day, it would reboot at least once a day!
Sooo current new dincs can't be rooted yet? I've had mine since day one and rooted. Is there no root for the latest ota? Asking for my friend who just got one.

The NOV OTA can't be rooted yet. The Unrevoked3 tool doesn't work on it yet, they are working on an update for their tool, but no eta yet.
There are instructions to downgrade, use Unrevoked3 to root and install ClockworkMod, then use UnrevokedForever to get S-OFF, update to the OTA, and re-install CWM Recovery and SU to gain root.
Take a look at the discussion in -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=776481&page=13

Exactly! It was force closing, but no rebooting More like stretching the truth.
i just got a brand new inc thru insurance (cracked my old one) and i activated it, booted up, and it i know it said 2.2 was installed. i said what the hell, tried to root it, and it worked. it must be an SLCD, becuase i got white bars, so im installing the modded recovery for SLCD now.
Exactly what I did when I got my new one. You just have to do it before you, or a vzw rep, accepts the update right after activating.
that must be why, the update did keep popping up lol. i guess it works on 2.2, but not if you go the Nov OTA. there is a guide to downgrade though so all phones can be rooted currently (not sure about SLCD that got the Nov. OTA though)

Yes all phones can be downgraded even if they are completely stock..you can re-flash signed RUUs no problem from within HBOOT.
This really isn't that big of a deal that everyone is making it out to be, but it would be a "nice" feature once you are able to root the latest OTA directly especially for the very few who just leave their phones completely stock and do nothing but root it.
If you use custom ROMs none of this matters.
Just thought I'd mention that the 3.22 update was just posted on their site.

Unless u ran unrevoked forever and have s off forever than by running the update u will lose root. Even if ur s off forever u run the risk of losing root as well. At best u can flash one of the gb roms in the dev section.
what if it is s-on?

If I had to make a choice I'd go to the dev section and choose a rom that I liked and flashed that. Then u don't have to wireless bout it anymore. With root u unlock things but also can get alot better battery life and can customize things like percentage battery and different lock screeens and lots more. Just look around and test things out before u give up. Its not as hard as u think to get the hang of it.
ok wow im stupid.
unrevoked forever is what i used. my bad lol sorry.
s-off
we tried 3 but it wouldnt work for some reason so we did the forever.
phone is rooted for sure.
so if i did the sprint update from the "update phone" section on the phone...i would lose root? would it flash phone too? honestly at this point idc about the root anymore really. i am about to upgrade to the Evo 3D next weekend

If ur upgrading to 3vo then no big deal. Upon reading u might have to unroot phone to get update to work. If ur selling ur evo back to sprint when u get new phone then run the s on from unrevoked and then unroot and take update. If ur putting it on eBay or craigslist or selling to a friend u can unroot and leave it s off so other person can reroot if they want
ok. so where is the best instructions on how to unroot?
i seen one in the dev section near the top (Unroot in 2 steps)<---that one?

Why take the update when there are optimized ROMs based on the update that work better and have in them than what you'll get from the OTA??

Correct yourself and stop spreading wrong information.
S off does not mean you are rooted nor does it have any correlation with being rooted.
S off is the security flag which allows the bootloader to flash unsigned/unofficial images to the partitions.
An evo can be rooted and still have the security flag s on.
Even the installation instructions for unrevoked forever state you have to be rooted FIRST WITH A CUSTOM RECOVERY ALREADY INSTALLED in order to apply the unrevoked forever patch.
You should get your information straight before you start to put it out.

Wow post like this deserve to go in the shutter. I was helping the Guy out. If he was s on then there is more than a large percentage chance that he isn't rooted. Instead of getting technical I decided to help out in q way he'd understand. So quit being a douche.

I wasn't being a douche. You ever heard of constructive criticism? Op stated he was still rooted and didn't take the ota. He was wondering what would happen if he did. He was also unsure if he was s on or not which has nothing to do with being rooted. You gave wrong information about the security flag when you should have told him to verify if he is s off even though he has a rooted rom. If he was s on then you could have told him to flash unrevoked forever and then he can accept the ota if he wanted.
Helping is one thing, helping with wrong information is another.

4.24.651.1 Update

Good afternoon,
I searched as best I could for an answer. I recently had my phone replaced because of water damage. The new phone I recieved has version 4.2.651.1 software. Is there anyway to get it back to version 3.x.xxx.x? (waiting for slap) If there is a way, please let me know. I would like to root my phone but as I've read in the forums, 4.2.651.1 cannot be rooted.
Thanks,
CJ
It's funny that your FIRST POST IS AS GAY AS THIS. if it can't be rooted, then it can't be rooted. simple as that. There is an OTA online waiting for you. go update your phone. LMAO! no joke. that is going to be the answer in the long run. The problem to rooting the phone will be clearly in the next OTA. As everyone on here says don't upgrade an OTA, but well, that's the answer. :-D

There's no need for a reply like that. On topic - basically as long as you have the gingerbread update you can't root your phone. There are some phones with the gingerbread update that can be rooted but I think its a temp hack only.

As for the OP, no, unfortunately no way to go back...it's sad I know. I had to get s on and unroot for a repair (knowingly of course) and now i kinda wished I still had a broken screen. Hehe. Until someone hacks the hboot 2.16 to allow us to downgrade to an older one we cannot get s off and consequently no permanent root, not that there is temp root either.
But if you like different Rosie mods there is a link in my signature about being unrooted. See if you can find anything there

not cool.
OP, from what I've gathered, a few people have received refurbished EVO's w/Gingerbread that have s-off from probably previous owners rooting their phones. If you received a refurb'd evo with s-off, I do believe you can flash on old RUU. More authoritative figures could confirm or dis confirm this.
Please boot into bootloader and tell us of you are s on or s off.
To do so turn off fast boot in settings then turn off phone, then hold volume Down kkey and power button

honestly, why did you do that??i just looked at androidcentral.com and the update doesnt fix anything special..anyway im sure a dev will have a rooted version soon..and just like he said, did it change the hboot?
You should always assume that an OTA update will break root (since it will not have Superuser installed) and that it may NAND Lock your phone (take away your S-OFF). If you want the update just wait around for a short time and a rooted version will appear here.
Well, try using an app that requires root permissions to see if it broke it, like titanium backup.

Hboot version is 2.16.0001
It was not clear from your OP if you had already rooted and then took the OTA or you wanted to know if you could still root your phone.
That is the same Hboot as the previous OTA so you may still be able to root with Revolution if you have not already. If you did already root your phone you need to check to see if you still have S-OFF and a recovery that you can use to get CM loaded.
Boot to recovery (hold Vol - and Power button)
What version of HBoot is it?
Cardinal Rule:
Once rooted, never bother accessing the OTA section of your Sense ROM.
Sorry, I have never rooted and am a complete rooting noob.
[my reason is that I've had blown speakers, cracked screens, etc. and have had 5 different replacements from Sprint and don't want to void my warranty unless I can get it back to make it appear as though I've never rooted]
I did find that this Hboot version still seems to be supported with the new root methods. I have one real quick question, and I have a hard time sifting through the posts, threads, forums.
I want to root, flash a new ROM and want to be able to recover my stock Sprint ROM in case I need to send my phone back for the aforementioned issues. If I follow the root procedures and install Amon_RA's backup and backup the current ROM, I should be able to flash that ROM and get back to S-ON? or would I have to go through some procedure to get back S-ON?
Again, my apologies for posting what's been posted probably 1000 times, you can just link me to a thread....I haven't been successful in my searches for a definitive answer. And the "noob guide" sticky on the forum hasn't been updated to the new root methods, so I'm not sure what will brick me and what is usable.
yes, I will never OTA update after rooting, but in case I want to get back to a stock ROM from Sprint for warranty trade in purposes.
follow up noob question to rooting, all the proper radios and account information will be imported into my phone after flashing a new ROM? Or will I have to know specific radios, PRLs or basebands after I root. It's my primary device so I can't afford to be without.
Damn. Just rooted a few days ago under the assumption Sprint has moved on as far as supporting the EVO.... Dig root but I hope this doesn't create a problem when the update is forced on me.
You can always turn off auto update, and you can also hit cancel if the auto updater pops up. You do not Have to ever update your phone if you dont want to
And if you do decide that you want the update you can wait for a rooted version to appear on XDA and flash that.

*noob alert* Those normally appear in the Development forum, correct? Is there a particular title I should be looking for?
No offense, and I really mean that, but you should not root your phone if you are that worried about the consequences. If you aren't willing to accept that Sprint may be able to tell you rooted you phone then deny you warranty repairs just stick with what you have. Once you get past that point then its time to have some rooting fun.
Seriously though, everyone is going to tell you how great root is, but I bet 60% or better never actually do anything with their phone that would have required root to being with!
But to get back to a factory state, all I'd need to do is flash a Sprint RUU and turn S-ON. I'd assume that's pretty straight forward, I was just curious if anyone here knew the best instructions that were easy to follow.

Using older root methods (pre-Gingerbread), yes. But the new root method for GB/Hboot 2.16 installs a new, non-official hboot - 6.16. No one has been able to get the s-on tool to work or downgrade to a different hboot. You can flash an RUU that will take you back to stock, but you cannot gain s-on. Whether or not Sprint cares about the s-off 6.16 hboot, I don't know. Sprint is supposed to service rooted phones as long as the firmware is stock. If it's not, they'll RUU for you. You may have problems or you may not, kind of depends on who you deal with.
The revolutionary root method is still in a beta phase, what I believe they call a "developer preview" or something. Perhaps once it's released officially there will be an easy way to gain s-on.
I think that if you are worried about rooting or don't know why you would be rooting ("it seems cool" is not a legitimate reason) then you shouldn't do it. But that's just my opinion.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
my reason is that I'm sick of Sprint/HTC's flaky software that breaks things like wireless-n, my ability to stream music/contacts with my car stereo over bluetooth, icons constantly disappearing after reboot, Sense rebooting itself, etc. I don't care about its "cool" factor, I want control - its android, right? otherwise I'd just go get an ibone.
Thank you for that update on the 6.16 Hboot change and S-off/on status, its very helpful. Any thoughts on my question of new ROMs will know how to contact the Sprint network with all my information properly, or do I have to do something fancy to that.
I don't know...last month I couldn't root 2 or 3 weeks ago root pops up for GB 2.3.3 I rooted my phone and to tell you the truth I ain't gonna lie I'm still a noob when it comes to rooting...but I think once you try it yo ass ain't never goin back lol cuz I've been on CM7 this whole time and I'm blown away I'm gonna try out vaelpak RC2 tonight when I get home there's just so much you can do...but that's jus my opinion
