I have a rooted desire and have just flashed a new rom and then found I had problems re-installing handcent sms. Looking a little further I found a file
data at app at com.handcent.nextsms-1.apk at classes.dex
that can't be updated. I have tried to delete this file manually in the terminal but I always get rm failed I/O error. I have also tried deleting the dalvik-cache from the clockworks recover and the file still persists. What can I do to fix this, is the internal storage corrupt.
The "at"s should be @s but the forum kept telling me I wasn't allowed to post external links.
If the file is in /data/app just manually delete it using a file explorer

I've searched for this and no luck... I'm using Myn's Warm 2.2 RLS4 and trying to reinstall some of the removed .apks that are in the optional folder, and others that I have moved myself using Root Explorer. Some of them I could just click and they would install via the app installer with no problem. However, I'm getting an "application not installed" message for some.
I've tried installing from the folder (with success for some apk's) and also tried moving the files back to the original location system/app and installing from there. (I've also had this work in one instance). In addition, I've tried rebooting and wipes of dalvik in between attempts.
An example: I moved HTCTwitter to the sd card and the app (Peep) was gone as expected. Next I tried reinstalling to test whether or not it would work and got the dreaded "app not installed" message. After that I tried just moving file back to the original location using root explorer and a restart. The file moved to the correct location, but no sign of the app. I tried installing from within system/app and same "app not installed".
This is not isolated to this ROM for me. Had same issue with AVA Froyo. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Are the one's that you are having trouble with "System Apps"?
It seems like it's mostly the apps that came pre-installed like Peep in the example and I remember the issue with Teeter as well. I recall having an issue with twitter, when I moved it thinking it was the peep app and could not reinstall that app. However, I went to the mkt and the twitter app install with no problem.
So, yes. It seems like systems apps.
Try setting your permissions mask to match an installed app. While you're at it check ownership and chown to match.
Oh yeah I'm sure you're first uninstalling, then installing a new.

Try using adb what you need to do is place your apk in your androidsdk tools folder, open cmd, cd to your androidsdk/tools folders, and push the apk to there location wanted. Example pushing gmail would be as follows.
Code:
Adb remount
Adb push gmail.apk system/app
An reboot

Thanks. Going to give adb a try. I saw that suggestion somewhere else too. It seems like just copying to system/app places the file there, but doesn't have the same effect as adb push.
Also, I did try matching permissions when I was having issues with teeter trying to use root explorer. The strange thing is that I was able to do this a few months ago with the same apk, if I recall correctly, by just installing from Astro file mgr.
Thanks for the help guys.

Iirc the only time I ever got that message was when froyo apps2sd lost its links and I filled my phone memory with apps.
What's your memory?

Are you trying to delete system files? Do you have SU installed? Are you clicking the R/W option. More details please.....
Several people have reported the issue with screen shot, to fix it they've had to rename the pictures folder(Seems like the folder is read only).
Swiftkey'ed on my CM9 Galaxy Nexus
No system files just old pictures, music files and other misc. It is set as r/w, also I am getting a few apps saying I need storage available that is writable. Something has to be up with the internal storage not allowing me to access or write to it.

Well I am able to take screen shots by renaming he folder. However, I am still unable to write anything to my sdcard or modify files through root Explorer or any other file manager app.

Root explorer - How to text edit
Hi All,
I have a problem with my root explorer. I am not able to open a file to edit. If i long press on a file , i dont get any option to open/edit the file.
i was supposed to edit gps.conf file under /system/etc but unable to do so from root explorer.
PS: i mount r/w from the root explorer every time i try..
Please help.
If you have any directories/files that you can't modify or delete, then boot into CWM recovery, plug in the USB cable, go into adb shell. Also make sure that /data is mounted in the CWM mounts menu. Then:
cd /data/media
chown -R media_rw.media_rw *
root explorer delete failed

i'm having this crazy "delete failed" error every time i try to delete any file in sdcart, external, and root directory (copy-paste, root, permissions works fine )
i tried to delete any remains of root explorer with es file explorer ((which works fine btw so its not a problem of partitions i think), re installed the program again but its the same . Flashed the rom from the beginning with a full wipe but its the same
this error happened first when i updated from blackmart alpha to some rootexplorer v.99. I uninstalled that but it left this error
Any idea what is causing that
I'm very curious and would appreciate it
thanks
I found a way to delete the files you suggest using Root Explorer. Go into /data/media/<navigate to the directory that you want to delete files>.. make sure the folder is mounted as r/w and delete the files you want to delete. This is how I bypassed the delete failed issue in Root Explorer...

Thank you rester, this worked for me too. Was pulling my hair out.
New to all this so proceeding slow and cautiously. Recently rooted my Acer A100 with ota ICS installed. When trying to swap SD card and internal memory using Crossix directions I ran into an error msg that I haven't seen posted by anyone. The only difference I can find is his directions recommend using Root Explorer and I am currently using Root Browser Lite. Anyway when I go to rename install-recovery.sh to .bak it says Root Browser Lite is granted Superuser access but the operation fails. I looked at the Permissions for the file and they are rwxr--r-- I tried to change the Permissions to rwxrwxrwx and got an error msg that said "Changing permissions was not successful. Please note that some file systems do not allow permission changes." Would using Root Explorer change anything? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Sounds like a root issue, try rebooting, opening superuser first then try.... unless you already put the file there and permissions aren't correct, that will brick you! If you already did force close super user. Remember if all else fails you can use Adb.

Its because /system is a partition, not a directory, so you have to mount the partition r/w to get it in the folders and files on it.

I am trying to copy apk from data/app to system/app.
However it always failed with error insufficient storage / memory.
I have tried it using Root explorer by ensuring the r/w mount but still failed.
I believe i still have around 100MB left in the /system while the apk i tried to copy is only 70KB
I also have tried using terminal but still same error: "Out of Memory"
I am using Gingervillain 3.3 and used to root via unrevoked 3.21
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

I assume you are s-on.
If you are s-on, then you can't modify the system partition while the operating system is booted. Try booting in recovery, and using adb to copy the apk from /data/app to /system/app.
Furthermore, S-OFF also reduces restrictions on accessing the NAND flash memory on the device, allowing all partitions (including /system) to be mounted in write mode while the operating system is booted.

Wohoo! it works!
Thanks a lot m8
I can't edit/delete on the SD card or in the Downloads folder. It says it is deleted by still remains.
I tried clearing cache and dalvik cache which didn't help.
THe TWRP settings app says that the SD patch is applied.
I tried CHMOD it to 777 but root explorer gets denied permissions.
I tried to CHMOD it in TWRP but it doesn't stick upon boot.
I checked the permissions.xml file and it has the proper settings.
I check SDFIX and it says my card is already fixed.
However everytime i try to download something it fails, or if i try to delete anything on the card it fails.
Im on a rooted LG G3 running 5.0.2
Fixed. Used Int-SDCARD write fix app to correct error
