[Q] Faulty back button? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Initially when pressing the back button on my desire, a large majority of the time, it would register it correctly (i.e. do the operation associated with the back button), irrespective of my finger placement as long as I apply a low amount of pressure.
Now, I find that a lot more key presses on the back button are lost. I have to press much more harder / deeper to improve the chance the keypress registers. This is the second time I've encountered this and the third hardware fault I've had:
Fault #1: headphone jack not working, music continues to play through speaker (repaired)
Fault #2: back button doesn't always register key presses (repaired)
Fault #3: back button doesn't always register key presses (going to have to be repaired again, sigh).
I've searched the forums but haven't found anyone else mentioning this problem. Has anyone else experienced this issue at all? Or have I got crummy luck and gotten an HTC Lemon?

I have the exact same thing. Only started recently though. It takes a hard press sometimes, and other times if I press hard it's like a double button push.
You aren't alone. Lol

Cheers rolfd. Least I know I don't have the "touch of death".
It's definitely fixable cos I've handed it in for repair and it's come back working. My concern is more if it continues to re-occur. Guess I'll have to wait and see...

You are not alone about this problem:

Navigation button problems... Any1 else having them?

I don't know if it's coincidence, but ever since I upgrade to WM5 and went back to WM2003SE, my navigation button has not worked the same.
For example, a lot of times I can go right, but can't go back left even after multiple presses, and then most of the time the middle or 'Enter' button doesn't do anything. Itz become extremely annoying because I have lost my 4th stylus by now, and I haven't received my new ones yet. Oh, and I can't play MorphGear right anymore.
Is it just hardware? Cuz I first went to ROM v.1.42 and then went to 1.40 to see if it was a problem with the new ROMs, but I still have the same problems. Any one else having these issues, and has any one fixed it??
UPDATE: WTF!! Now it went from bad to worse. Yesterday, when I left my BA at home, once I returned from work I noticed that PIE was constantly opening over and over again. Then some of the buttons wouldn't respond like the POWER to turn it off. The backlight pretty much stayed lit the whole time because it looked like the keys were stuck. I upgraded to WM5 derived from the Himalaya today and now the START menu comes up almost every 5-8 seconds, followed by a real quick succession of multiple "clicks", and my 'Start' button doesn't seem to be responding.
Can anyone help? Has my BA gone to the state of retardation? Is there a way to bring it back??
How did you go with this problem.
Mine is doing similar ever since a low battery problem.
DLC
I am experiencing the same kind of problem... and it happend after upgrade to WM5. But the problem likely to be caused by hardware.
I had problems with my phone opening up the start menu, opening IE, and closing programs immediately after opening them, Of course I had dropped the phone halfway in a cup of ice water, but immediately after tossing it in water (after hanging up, I simply dropped the phone into the cup-holder I have mounted below my stereo which happened to be occupied by a glass of ice-water I placed there without remembering) I shook the water out of the phone, and for about as much as i could stand the heat, I put a hair-dryer to the end of my phone which i pryed open after removing as many screws as i could. After a day of quirky behavior, and a night of having the battery seperated from the phone, my phone is back to its old self with the water-damage seal unnaffected after missing the line of water by just a few milimeters. I suggest going to Settings>Buttons and making every button perform no function at all followed by going to Settings>System>Button Lock and having all keys locked except your power button. Hope this helps!
Having somewhat the same issue. Only the "Down Navigation button" isn't working. Although, I'm still using Windows Mobile 2003 SE. Is there a DIY fix for this?
bump...
any suggestions?
Navigation Up/Down
Mine isn't working either - is this a hardware fault?
trying pressing down a bit harder. coz when i did that for mine, the "down" button works. normal applied pressure as for the rest of the buttons(left/right/up) does not seem to work with the "down" button, but a bit more force would make it work.
this happens to my IIs.. mebbe u can try.
Button problems
After no trauma or dunks in water several of my buttons have gone awry. My green phone button, red phone button and navigation buttons all open contacts. The green phone button activates voice command at the same time that it opens contacts. I've never switched from WM2003SE. I've checked the buttons settings and they are the same as always. Most bizarre of all is that my battery is quickly discharging. I suspect some software process is running hard but don't have any idea where to start to fix this. Soft resets have not helped.
buttons gone crazy
A hard reset fixed the problem but was a typical pain to get everything back going. Sprite backup works great until the first attempt to ActiveSync with your PC.

Desire acting very strange

Hello,
I have a problem with my HTC desire and would greatly appreciate any help. So, this is what happens:i've had the phone for about1 mo.th and had no probl until about 5 days ago when the pjone started acting as if the HOME, MENU and VOLUME UP keys were being pressed, but i didn't press any of them. Sometimes it happened for minutes. Then, it changed,if i pressed the home button, the phone would bring up the volume and the keypad, if i pressed the menu button, it would act as if i would hold down the home button for a few seconds and also, would bring up tje volume. Also, when this happens, the volume down button won't work. Very few times everything works fine sincd the probls started. I factory reseted the phone twice but no change. Everything else, calls, texting, internet works fine, but since the home button is being activated so often by itself, it will close the texting or the internet. No water damage. I dropped it once, but from e very small height.
What shall I do? Can anyone help? Has anyone had the same problem? I really like this phone.
Thank you
1st time I heard of this...
Suggest you to rule out any 3rd party applications.
If you still can't figure it out, you should be taking advantage of your warranty...

sound suspiciously like water damage to me
Hi, I appreciate your prompt reply to my post. I disabled any third-party applications and also, it hasn;t been water damaged, I was careful this shouldn't happen. however, it still continues to act strangely. I found someone describing the same issues with their phone while googling this malfunctioning
If you can think of anything how I can solve this, please let me know,
Cheers,

Problem with power and volume down buttons

Hi everybody,
I have sometimes a strange problem :
- the volume down button doesn't work anymore.
- I can't use the power button to turn on / off my phone, but it works as I can press it 3 times to open camera. On the contrary, I can't use it to ask for reboot, but it works for soft reset! Aaaaaarrgh! Brain pain!
When I try to soft reset, my phone enters in safety mode, as if I pressed the volume down button during restart.
In bootloader, I can't use power and volume down button. Quite annoying.
Sometimes, volume is turning down without pressing any button.
But what is weird is that my phone shifts from normal state (all buttons working) to defect state and back to normal state again without doing anything. It's unpredictable. It can work well for decades, then stops working fine for hours or days then back to normal.
Sometimes, when it works well, when I'm using it, it goes wrong without doing anything. I'm reading my favorite site and volume is suddenly going down. Without warning, without even touching a button.
I have to say one more thing. I picked up that phone from a coworker, and the volume button is a bit bent near volume up (picture needed?) but it worked fine for months before starting to mess.
I hope you'll be able to help me.
Sorry for my English, it's not my native tongue.
Seems to me like a hardware problem.
What I'd do honestly is to hit it repeatedly on a hard surface, but please, do not do that
If you can I suggest taking it apart and making sure all the ribbons are firmly set in place and undamaged. It can be an one way ticket for damaging the phone for good though, so wait for other suggestions too.
Thanks for your answer.
What is making me angry is that it also does this when left alone on the table : I let it there working perfectly and when I pick it up again, it fails.
And when it fails, once again I let it alone and suddenly the volume goes down, without even touching it. Raging.
its a hardware problem, u have to change the volumes and power flex, had the same problem with the powern button, i turn the phone off, and a few secons later it power on by himself till i change the flex
Did you take the phone apart recently? I had my battery replaced and that's when my Volume up started phantom pressing. I hit the phone repeatedly on a flat service and made sure to kind of slap it so it would impact kinda evenly as to not dent the case, it worked for about a week at a time, then I just took the phone apart and tried to align everything and made sure all the insulation tape was flat and and not bunched up and now it's fine. We'll except my USB port has got some giggle to it. Order a new USB of amazon for like $9, I'm trying to hold out for a LG V30

[solved] [help] Power button Issue

Hi,
I have a strange issue with my HTC one m8. I am getting a warning 'to restart your phone press and hold the power and volume up buttons for 10 seconds'. The strange thing is that my button is not stucks, it still 'clicks'.
I have gone through this forum and found many other people facing similar issues. I have tried remapping keys in my device and disabling the power button. Even though this has solved the problem of the warning showing, the phone does behave abnormally sometimes.
Is there any way to disable power button from kernal and remap it to say volume button. or is there any other simple solutions to this problem. Please help i really can't afford a new phone right now.
Thanks a lot
Okay. So i have managed to solve the issue without any software optimizations
Coming to the point, what you need is isopropyl alcohol (commonly known as rubbing alcohol, surgical spirit, medical spirit). I got a very small syringe and injected minute amounts to the sides of power button. I injected small quantities into both sides of the power button. Now, i started pressing the power button, rocking it left and right for about an hour periodically making sure the solution was well inside.
After this i left the phone unattended to dry for about 12 hours. After that the power button was back to normal. I was suffering with this problem for more than three months, i didn't want to try this solution earlier. So if you are suffering from similar issue, i am sure this method will help.
Thanks

Any help for stuck power button?

Have had my phone for months, but suddenly the power button stopped working properly.
It's stuck in a recessed state and has no "click" to it anymore. It's very hard to press, but if I use my nail and push it in the power button does feature, but again no "click" or response to the button press. More than anything I am worried about it becoming permanently broken, likely leaving the phone unusable.
Due to some location/warranty issues, I think getting the phone replaced (for now) is near-impossible/not really feasible.
I am in New Zealand where Google doesn't have any presence and I am unsure if any local "phone repair" shops might even be able to fix it - especially if any replacement parts are needed.
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice to try and fix the button myself? It was in a case since day 1 and I cannot recall any single time a drop would have happened or some dirt/sand/etc. would have gotten in and stuck. I used a "rocket blower" I use for my camera gear to just blow the button area, but no change.
Happy to provide more info if needed... all help is more than greatly appreciated!!!

All I can recommend is a soft key power button...on statusbar or navbar. You need to be rooted.
I use Fingerprint Quick Action app but same deal (root I think). With it I assigned double tap to fingerprint reader to turn off the display.
As for power button replacement, iFixit teardown of the XL doesn't look like an easy DIY thing, with display damage a likely scenario during disassembly. Good luck with that.
It's not a fix but for the moment Nova louncher has great gestures to lock the screen swiping up or down, double tap and more.
I know how this sounds, but try sealing your lips around it and give it a good suck. Like you'll feel that you're sucking air through other gaps in the housing. Popped my button out and it's clicking again. Might only be a temporary fix, but it's been a couple of days without an issue for me. Damn thing has been bugging me for about a month, sometimes getting stuck long enough to hard-reboot the phone. Almost felt like there was some sticky **** under the button.
