Xda mobile app ads - About xda-developers.com

I know that the new xda update includes adds and other stuff, there's fine.
I was wondering, if possible can xda make a paid app without ads? I would defiantly buy it. It would be nice and xda be making money too.
Please post here if you would like that and maybe we could get one.

hey dude every time i try to log on to the APP it tells me " need administrators permission to login...? " what do i have to do?

We added an ad so that we can continue to provide the app free. Surprisingly, we have gotten a lot of messages from people willing to pay to remove the ad. So, we are considering this, perhaps with a premium version that also adds new features.
Thanks for your input!

We're working on an update that should fix some of the issues with 1.3.1. In the mean time, try reinstalling, or rebooting your device. It works fine on my Nexus One with 2.2.1.

I agree with the no ad concept for a fee.
We are constantly bombarded with ads daily from every other medium so when I see ads, I uninstall.
In this case, XDA remains on my device because this is the best forum on the net, period.

Didn't know ads bother people so much. Games I know, but these ads are not bothersome at all.
Hypothethical question for the devs which would make you more money someone with who buys a $2 app or someone using an ad supported app. Just wondering

I would definitely buy it. The last thing I want to worry about is hitting the next page button and getting a 9.99 jamster charge on my bill because the ad captured my mobile number because of the app permissions or something like that. Thanks for the great app though

My carrier disabled third party billing to my account, but I think XDA uses a reputable source for the ads in the app (likely admob or google), who wouldn't allow someone to billl you $10 through merely clicking an ad.
But I'm sure Svetius can clarify which service generates the ads, and while it pays to be cautious, I reckon you're unlikely to get something like that as an app advert (though I am sure someone will try it some day...)

Very helpfull.."found it"...
I can't find the thread - could someone give me a link?
I have no access to a PC at the moment and it's very hard to search with the xda-app through all (sub-) forums by hand and also the results in the search-feature for "xda app" gives me, let me say, a "few" hits more back...
BackToTopic:
+1 - Would also pay for no ads!

It really is a non issue. Can you cite any viruses that have been released and affected phones?
Just check the permissions of apps and don't install fishy ones without doing a little research first.
I have Lookout on my phone. I guess its doing its job but there haven't been any viruses. The other reason I have it is if you lose your phone there is a phone locator feature using the Evo's gps.

Just give it time. It's a big untapped market out there.
I use AVG both on my phone, and my computer. On my Linux boxes I use ClamAV.

linux is completely open-source with a MASSIVE community of support. there's no reason for there not to be virii floating around for linux and possibly even android.
Seems like all AVs do is check permission for ones that shouldn't be there.

Just me..but why worry about viruses when one could have "root" and get your whole phone and all of the data and connection permissions on it to everything you connect to "in the cloud" and elsewhere.
A simple rogue app would do this and never be considered it a virus.. all you have to do is install it and give it su and it does it all. This isnt a windozes environment...we want it all.."root"...viruses are child play for windoze. my opinion.

Xda app for android.

Not sure if this is where I should post this. Just updated to the latest version of the XDA android app. For some reason, the HTC Droid Eris forum is not listed.

I know it was there just hours ago. Apperantly they cleaned up and said its available through the legacy template. No clue what that is but doesn't seem to be accessible through the app. I did a search for our forum but it just shows threads all mixed together. Wish I had marked it as a favorites. They need to fix the app so we can get to legacy phones!

Not sure how they consider our forums "Less Active" when we've got CM7 roms?
Was just coming here to "complain" about the same thing. Apparently in their clean-up, no considerations for the Android app were given... I've looked and looked. At first, I thought I was just over-looking it, but since others have the same problem, I guess not.
I am curious what determines when a device goes into the "legacy" area. If "the carrier no longer offers it" is the determination, that's short-sighted. On the other hand, EVERYONE will always feel this way when it applies to "their" phone...
Please fix this issue

That being the case with the dev name them i would not DL anything by that dev. Also did a quick look a and they have a few apps all free.

Big problem, I can still see them from a PC end in this case. I'd say this means they haven't actually been taken down, but the store only filtered from appearing on the Google Play App.
Looks like the OP of that thread has found another malware: call and SMS stats. Check it out to see his findings. From now on I am going to be very careful with what I download onto my device!

Yeah, it was like that shortly after the initial find. Considering though that you need the play store app to install any of it though it makes sense that they would just hide it while they investigate it themselves.

This is why I always look at all the permissions that an app requests...
Its also a reason why I prefer to get apps from the Amazon Appstore as well - at the bottom of the page you can see every detailed permission the app has. Most things on my phone came from Amazon.

[Q] Always on Google Now mic?

I know someone on XDA made an app that allowed this, but I can't find it for the life of me. Does anyone know the name of the app? Thanks.

I know that the new Moto-X phone will be "always listening" and Google Now can be activated anytime by voice. However, there is yet to be solid confirmation this will be rolled out to other devices. One reason most devices do not use this is probably the strain it puts on the battery, always having to process audio.
A lot of threads seem to discuss this - how to achieve this task. However, it appears the general consensus is that the battery would drain to quickly.
I'm sorry this didn't really answer your question, maybe in the coming weeks, once people get their hands on the Moto-X, the hardware to implement the hands free Google Now will be studied in an attempt to replicate.
EDIT: I found something! I found an app in the play store called Open Mic+. It is really new and seems to accomplish the task you are talking about. The performance seems to be iffy for now, as its still in beta, and reviewers say it drains battery, but it could be really cool.
There's an app on Google play store called Google Mic +, it's the only one I could find. Works pretty well actually.
