Messaging in Froyo - Desire General

Hello guys
Im currently running LeeDroids 2.1a ROM + launcher pro, but i have a following problem that could appear on other ROMs based on the same build? well anyway, sometimes when I receive a message the phone doesnt react at all, theres no notifications no vibration nothing, is anyone else having similar problems in any froyo roms?
thanks

i found that using the stock messaging app, when you leave it open and lock your screen, new messages dont vibe/ring. you have to exit back to your home screen/another app for the messaging app to ring or vibrate.
i downloaded chompsms however and it will ring/vibe no matter what, so i prefer using chomp

thanks man will have to try that not a big fan of chomp but oh well as long as it works they wont complain

Yes, I have it on HTC 2.2 with root too. Handcent or the stock app, both fail to notify until I go in and see new messages. It's not frequent though but at least once a day.

Getting 2 notifications for 1 text!!!??

Im getting 2 diffrent notifications for 1 text message ! i have tried disabling notifications in my default message app and still another one comes up and it says 1 unread text message then when i view it it still on the notification bar but now says no unread messages... anyone know whats going on? i really hate getting 2 tones for 1 message!! pleasse help!
Sounds like you are using a 2nd text application like Handcent.
Both applications will indicate a new message, Android and Handcent (or whatever). You have to open up the Android application and disable notifications.
Are you rooted, if so, I recommend using Titanium backup and freezing the stock messaging app. I think the free one will freeze/thaw apps , but if you are rooted the paid version is a must have in my opinion
You have to go into the stock messaging app and hit menu > settings > and uncheck the notifications.
i did all that i figured it out it was the stupid beautiful widget pack2!! grrrr!! but thanks for your guyses help!

SMS Alert not always sounding

Hey guys,
I have noticed, that sometimes my SMS alert doesn't always sound. Does this perhaps happen when you are in a conversation, and leave it open and jump right back to the home screen. Therefore the conversation is still "open" on the phone, and hence it doesn't sound? If I go back to my message widget, the new message shows up then.
Anyone else had this?
Go to aplications>mange aplications>all>sound set>clear data
And then set notification sound you like ... tell me if this helps you

Will give it a try
That's not fixed it.
Does it have something to do with the conversation still being open in the message app?
Are you on Android 2.2.1, software version 1.72?
There is a known issue with sms notifications on that version if you are. Best fix is using sms popup from the market to handle your notifications instead of the system app.

Yes, think that's what my current ROM is based on. I will be updating it later today though Thanks for the info

SMS default app is super laggy / stalls / fails

My One V is rooted but running the standard firmware. Problem is the default HTC text / SMS app. It often refuses to fully open (stays half open on white screen) or takes a minute or two to fully open. In addition "unread sms" notifications are not correctly update (I open a message but it still stays 'unread').
I have deleted all but a hundred or so messages in case there were too many.
I have removed all non-stock launchers and the like.
Situation improves after a reboot but only for one or two uses then the SMS app is back to misbehaving.
Phone is fully up to date apart from last minor (22mb) OTA update - that will not install for some reason.
Any suggestions anyone? I can live with everything else on the phone but this fault is really annoying.
Thanks in advance...
I suggest you back up everything and do a factory reset that should help

Thanks for the suggestion. I want to avoid that hassle if I can.
I am trying now the "Chomp SMS" app instead of the normal one. No lag or hangs so far
Some say it's that one the best: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jb.gosms&feature=search_result&hl=en
Thanks, I might try it if the Chomp one does not work out. I tried the Go Launcher and some other of their apps before but was not too impressed. Not too fast, left many folders on the phone when un-installed etc.
So far the Chomp SMS app works fast and is easy to customize. It does show ads however unless I pay.

Little Clarifications Please:
1) Using CUSTOM ROM or Stock ROM?
2) Using Stock messaging App or any others?
I'm assuming you'r using default stock messaging app in STOCK ROM.
May be try opening Messaging, Press Menu key and go to Settings, under the settings there will be notification settings. Check those.

I'm not sure how is this then.
May be Check whether it's similar to this.
Also, Check you notification volume and Also make sure the there is some ringtone selected in these apps as well.
Since Go SMS works fine i think it's ostly an issue due to the setting in Stock Messaging app.

Force stop and Clear data in Application Manager. May be that would help.

Messaging app lag?

Just wanted to see if anyone else has been experiencing the same thing. I haven't experienced any lag with this phone whatsoever except for the stock messaging app.
1) Sometimes when I open the messaging app, the preview of a text messaging thread may be from many hours ago and then "refresh" itself to the most recent text. Essentially when I open the app, the preview shows a much older text message and then after a couple seconds will show the most recent one.
2) Sometimes when I push send on a message, it will take a second before the text is actually sent so if I continue to text, it will add on to the previous message until sent.
The only way I've found to correct this is to switch to the "SMS/MMS" tab, which seems to correct the lag, but of course any time you push the back button out of the app, it goes back to the deault "all messages" tab when opening. I also tried holding down the tab titles and it brings you to a screen which it almost looks like HTC was going to give the option to remove other tabs but the boxes cannot be unchecked.
Anyone else running into these issues? Find a solution?
Yeah ive noticed the same weirdly enough I don't feel lag when using sliding messaging app or textra

I don't recall having any of those issues but for me what happens is when I open the message app, in the list of people I've been texting, it shows their phone number for a second, and then it switches to their name. And it only happens once in a while. Like right now, it's not happening. Weird

Same here. Kind of annoying, but I had so many problems with go sms and hand cent on my rezound not sending group messages correctly. I'm scared to change and lose a working "group messaging app".

I have these two issues.
This stock HTC Messages app automatically closes when you back out of sending a reply message, so it doesn't refresh the preview list like previous HTC phones on a reply. On the same token, it appears that it completely quits the Messages app, requiring you to load the names from the Contacts app when you open the Messages app without replying to a message. If you press Home rather than Back, when you open the Messages app again, it loads the messaging screen with the contact you most recently messaged, the person to whom you just replied. If you open the app and send a message, then press Back, it loads the list again, and everything is all good. It's all very odd.
Well glad to see I'm not the only one. I had tried Handcent, Chomp, etc with nothing but lag and other issues. Thanks to the response from NSRpxndxhou, I tried Textra and actually really like it. Best replacement text app I've tried.
I like how HTC's stock messaging app looks, but it ended up simply being too slow. I switched to Textra, enabled the dark theme and never looked back. Silky smooth performance, even with giant threads.
I am in the middle of an email conversation with the guys at Textra. I love the app. But my group messages are not working correctly. Those guys are great. Within one day I got an email with an update to try.... make that two updates. Just got another one while typing this.

Textra does seem nice, but there are a couple things I would miss from the stock messaging app. I like the ability to search ALL your text messages to find a specific text. I also prefer to have the time stamp on each and every text like the stock application does. I also don't like how it shows the contacts phone number below their name.
I would likely use this as a stock replacement if they were able to integrate all those features.

You may want to consider going into messaging->settings->general and adding a text limit (default at 200). When you do this you will notice your messaging to be a bit more zippy. This is because its not trying to open all of your old previous messages (which can be in the thousands).

I had a Messaging app issue when I had too many messages, which was fixed by deleting them, but that whole "reloading" issue seems to be separate.
Even with a few messages, it tends to reload upon reopening the Messaging app. Really weird why it does it...

I agree. I go through 5-6k texts a month and if I didn't set a limit my stock messaging app would laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag.

Had this issue as well, found out that if you go to the stock messaging app settings > MMS > then connection settings, this gives you the APN. Copy that URL and paste it in the Textra MMS settings. Mines worked flawlessly ever since. Not experiencing any lag like the stock messaging app, and have noticed no difference in features.
