Should I buy the desire or nexus one? or wait for something new?(dont know when that would be)
i kind of want to know how the optical trackball works...i am using the xperia which has an optical tackpad and its useless...would the trackball from nexus one be better or useless?
and D1 video...dont get the point of it

I think the specs on the desire and the N1 are almost exactly the same, besides the noise cancelling, BT version and the RAM. But on the other hand, the desire needs a little bit more ram due to the sense UI.
I think sense ui is starting to get useless since android has got many sens ui-features already built in since 2.1
I don't know whether to swap desire for a nexus or not. Id love color notifications, it has charging points and also I keep getting crumbs between my keys lol

I actually have both phones. Haven't had the Desire long enough for a full comparison, however, I would say that it depends on what you want out of your device.
If you want ultimate customisation with lots of different ROMs and hacks and stuff, flashing it all the time and playing with the latest stuff, and you are prepared to put up with the odd thing not working - if only for brief periods - then I would say the Nexus is better.
If you just want a device to work and to look good in the process, then the Desire is probably better, especially if running the absolute latest software is not something that is important for you.
They are so similar but:
Call quality is better on the Nexus marginally
I prefer the physical trackball to the optical one - I like the feel of it and the multi-coloured lights!
Sense is fantastic, but stock Android can do it all with a few apps. On my Desire I have far fewer apps installed as HTC provide so much
The Nexus is slightly lighter
I think the Desire looks sleeker and feels nicer in the hand, but that is just my opinion
The Desire doesn't come with a neoprene sleeve!

all i really want is HTC to make a nexus one thin full qwerty slideout but thats a dream
i used to have a N1, first i have been very satisfied, but as i am not anymore in my mid 30 i had problems reading mails etc, as you can NOT change the font size on the N1.....I bought the Desire and it is perfect....change font size etc....great tool....just love it.

Motorola Driod/Milestone?
I'd go for the N1 (me and my gf have a desire) because of the faster updates and HTC crippled Android imo.
Im gonna sell my 3gs and get a nexus one.. keep both lol.
But i fancy nexus again because the colour trackball, cynoagen mods with cm updater, the kernel source is out which means you can use setcpu etc. full write access which we dont have on the desire yet.
And surely froyo will be easier to import on the nexus?
Oh and also you can install the recovery rom on flash!! which means you dont need a computer to flash roms.. well you didnt when i had one... i used to change roms at uni.. was so cool

I have had the Nexus One since the first batch shipped to the UK back in Feb I think it was. I have had the Desire for 5 days! I am currently using the Desire as my main device as a test and will do so for a minimum of 2 weeks.
I am evaluating it for my company as an alternative to the Nokia E62 and HTC Touch HD2.
Most reviews suggest that the physical buttons on the Desire are better than the capacitive "touch" buttons on the Nexus One.

The physical buttons are nicer to use. The layout of the buttons on the N1 is better I think

Trackball is much better than optical trackpad. On the other hand, real buttons are much better than sensor buttons.
Other than that: Sense or not Sense? That is the question - if you don't do much ROM flashing and stuff that is (cause then the Nexus is better - and it will get the official Android 2.2 earlier).
I personally never use the trackpad. Why would you need to anyway?

Is .1" really that noticeable?
Both have CM7 support, and the Vision has the original Sense UI support, not sure how the Glacier is on their version of sense or other ROM support.

desire z 3.7" screen desire hd has 4.3" when you have hd in your hand it looks and feels big.
The big screen is nice but I like the touch button and the surrounding notification light on the Z. The kb on the Z I don't use all that much but when I have a big typing need it's a nice to have. The big screen is nice though, I would take which ever ones feels the best to you. I think the HD might go through it's battery faster... that may be worth looking into. The screen is the #1 battery killer.
What's worse on HD:
- Battery
- No camera button
- No trackpad
- No keyboard
- No SLCD (worse display angles and colors)
- Too big

Oops, had my threads mixed up. That's what I get for having multiple tabs open. That post meant to go in a thread comparing the Glacier with the G2, and not this one comparing the DZ to the DHD XD. I did the same exact thing with the other thread.
I have the HTC Wildfire S but I am thinking of buying the Desire Z because the screen on my phone is too small to text! The buttons are so small. I have tried the Desire Z and like the physical keyboard. But I'm not sure if it's good enough for fast typing?
But maybe since newer android phones are bigger it would be just as easy to type on an on screen keyboard just as a physical keyboard? They don't make many physical keyboard anyway nowadays. I would like an HTC or Samsung.
So should I get the HTC Desire Z, or get a newer HTC phone with just an on screen keyboard?

The screen on the Z isn't that much bigger, so I don't know if you'd be able to type any better/faster on the screen than the Wildfire S. But the physical keyboard is very good. Not actually as good as older HTC phones, like the Touch Pro 2. The keys could stand to protrude a bit more, and press down farther. And the lack of dedicated number row is also a step backward. But still very good compared to keyboard from other manufacturers. Typing is definitely faster on the Z's physical keyboard than on the virtual keyboard, and probably rivals or beats virtual keyboards on bigger screened phones.
Have you tried the Swype keyboard on your Wildfire S? I pretty much can't stand typing on-screen without Swype, which makes it more bearable. Get Swype by going to their website and signing up for the beta:

Define "fast". Its a phone that is about a year and a half old. Its acceptable for most tasks. And with the right ROM and overclocking, it can be made to perform smoother. But its starting to show its age versus the 1.5 GHz multicore flagship phones coming out now. And the One X looks like it may redefine tasks and blow away even the phone currently on the market.

Well, I've already mentioned that I have to use Swype, otherwise screen keyboards drive me crazy. And I'm on CM7 right now, so I can't tell you much about the stock Sense screen keyboard. It works well enough, from the times I've used it. But I tend to make lots of typos on this size screen.
If you mean that the Wildfire S is not supported by the Swype beta, then there are plenty of similar apps available. Or more recent HTC firmware (and custom ROMs) contains HTC Trace, which is their Swype clone.
You have 2 choices get a galaxy nexus or wait it out til HTC announces a qwerty device whenever that may be.
Vision is really fun to upgrade it and change roms and the other things... Its fun to wait for those fully working ICS roms, to dream about stable sense 4.0 roms, flash kernels, radios, mods... If I would buy a Nexus, it wouldnt be such a great experience. I would just download some apps and maybe root it...
Anyway Im very satisfied with Vision and I will change it only, when it gets really weak behind the newest devices. Kinda like wildfire now... Not the wildfire S

Physical keyboard is for me very good, no typo errors when typing, big enough. And with beta.swpe.com I use, it is for me sufficiently good combination for daily drive.

Why do you say there are only 2 choices? The HTC One X looks to blow away the Galaxy Nexus in terms of CPU speed, and will be released in most markets in April/May.. And the Galaxy S3 is probably going to be announced/unveiled at some point in the next few months. And that is if you are recommending the absolute top performing phones. There are plenty of other existing phones on the market that would also meet the OP's needs.

I'm also on a bit of a budget. In Canada (where I live), Bell does not longer sell the Derise Z. I found one being sold online for $200 in my area. I will either buy the Desire Z or get something like the HTC One X once my contract is up in 2 years. Also, I was looking at the Samsung Captivate Glide as a very good up to date phone with a physical keyboard.

Reason I said that is because One X comes with sense preinstalled, Our vision devices did not.
For me I think if u r going to mainly use the phone to send emails, sms .... Desire z is the best choice to go with. If ur focus is on browsing, games,music I think u should go with a newer version like htc one

I love my g2. It's much easier to send thoughtful emails/texts than any other phone out there. The hercules is the obvious replacement phone at the moment, though.Rocking em both.

As your Vision didn't come with Sense: did you buy it as a G2? I've read that they just feature the stock Android interface. Anyways, my Desire Z had Sense preinstalled.

1st question: The only on-screen keyboard I can imagine to reach half the typing comfort of the Desire Z's physical keyboard is the Galaxy Note's one. But to lead to the
2nd question: The physical keyboard is quite comfortable and the keys are perfectly arranged for my (medium sized) hands.
3rd question: If you mean the Desire Z's on-screen keyboard - install a different one! The stock Sense keyboard is quite slow compared to the stock Android one. I also prefer Swype for daily use but the Sense one is definitely not optimal. If it comes to typing comfort itself - the on-screen keyboard is good for one-hand typing if you really have to or are just too lazy to "slide" out the physical keyboard.
4th question: If you mean the Desire Z's on-screen keyboard - one-hand typing -> portrait on-screen keyboard | two-hand typing -> physical keyboard (no need to use a landscape on-screen keyboard )
As much as I love my Desire Z, I can definitely tell it's getting dated.
If possible, I would suggest you find a phone with perhaps a bigger screen (for your typing/texting needs) and with a newer processor. With some more intensive tasks or games, the desire Z definitely shows its age.
Although, I understand that you have a budget, and if you cannot find something dual core, you are probably very well off with a Desire Z.

The keyboard is very easy to use. I have my phone ever since it first came out in the US. I have used the phone so much I can text with it without looking at the keyboard.

I did, In the U.S our Vision devices are stock android.
The HTC One X looks very nice and I can imagine that it will be touting a hefty price tag when available. I currently have a G2 which I am very pleased with, for the most part. Typing emails and text is very fluid and fast but I am asking for more (especially for browsing and gaming).
I guess I need to start saving my pennies.

Install smart keyboard from playstore, it has a skin named HTC which is actually sense 3 keyboard
Yeah in fact i bought the paid version of smart keyboard jejeje, but i wanted to know if i can have the old Sense 3 keyboard, because im a vintage HTC Hero user, who would love to have the OLD real keyboard

How do you define "decent replacement"? I definitely missed having a QWERTY keyboard when I used a full touch device after my Desire Z died, but I've been using the BlackBerry Priv for the past 7 months and it's great. Didn't think I'd like a portrait slider, but at 5.4" screen size I'd say it's the better solution, the keyboard is maybe even better than DZ's plus it's capacitive and allows scrolling, various gestures while typing etc. Can't be rooted, but thankfully BB runs nearly stock Android so I'm also very happy software-wise.
There's also the newly announced candybar BlackBerry KEYone.

I was hoping that HTC would do that for quite some time, but they don't exactly seem interested. If you need or want a physical keyboard and Android, BlackBerry is your best bet.
There's also this, but a 5.5" landscape slider seems like a silly idea IMO.
