Text tones? - Windows Phone 7 General

Do we know yet if WP7 will have customizable text tones?
Edit: Also, I've heard that WP7 doesn't support multitasking, but rather "screen shots" of your last activity. Is this similar to how iOS does most (not all, such as Pandora) use multitasking?

81 views and no one felt the need to help a guy out and answer my question? It's really not that hard. Either a conformation that it can/cannot do them, or a "we don't know yet" would have sufficed.

Please be patient...WP7 hasn't launches yet...how can you expect someone knows the answer?and this section is not as popular as android...everything still under guessing, predicting and developing...
Cheers...finger crossed...and wait...

About Multitasking...
IIRC You can say its similar to iOS.
No 3rd party apps allowed to multitask though, not at launch anyway.
And at the moment there is no fast app-switching, you have to go back to Homescreen and then go to the new app.

New feature: XDA-developer encyclopedia

I've built a system where certain words get underlined, and if you let the cursor linger there, a small explanation of that term appears.
This is controlled from the XDA-developer encyclopedia forum, where each topic is a term, and everyone can add explanations.
For instance: the word Wallaby has been underlined with a thin green dotted line. If you linger there, you should get the encyclopedia entry for it.
I'm starting to create some entries, but please all feel free to add entries for difficult terms.
WoooooW that's great idea
Hello Peter Poelman
thanks for providing this new feature and great idea.
keep up the good work and good luck

Hi there,
cool feature. But it works only with the InternetExplorer.
No helping popup with Netscape 7.1.
Greetings, Kaputter
Popup Killers
I use Panicware's popup killer, internet advertising's gotten way outta hand, which cancels out your forum's popups. There are ways to set the XDA forum as a url not to kill popups. As more and more people try to get rid of these popups, you may suffer with your new feature.
You'd thing these advertisers would learn from the home phone soliciting ... I disconnected my home phone service cuz it got so bad (50+ unsolicited calls a day!).
Maybe if we all disconnect the web, these advertisers will get the message ... yeah, right!
Kill all pop-up advertising, pay what-ever it takes but kill these advertisers!
There, I'm better now .. back to XDA'ing ..

Extreme Text

Guys .... just downloaded this .... works perfectly ...

what free threaded app do you suggest then?
Except for a bunch of features that haven't been implemented yet, I'd have to say this is the best threaded sms program out there for the SP. Good GUI and being able to read from the existing inbox and sent items.
I wouldn't pay for it just yet with all the missing features but it looks very promising.
Agreed. I like it, but missing a few things.....
prefer the interface to IMSMS tho!
I really wish IMSMS and the others would display the number of unread messages on the homescreen. I txt a lot and that's a dealbreaker for me. even if it was a custom plugin it'd be better than nothing. Why dont they use the internal database to do this like extreme text does?

Um, this is the Extreme Text thread.... perhaps ask on the IMSMS thread and you may get and answer either way if it is possible or not. Posting a complainant and comparing a free SMS software on another thread for another piece of software seems a bit off.....
Um, I know what thread this is. Someone mentioned IMSMS and I was pointing out that IMSMS doesn't do something that this one does.
Look up the definition of "rhetorical question."

Ban "Sent from my XXX using App" garbage

Something should be done about it, because it's getting out of hand.
1) It makes quoting posts frustrating. It actually punishes us, because we need to manually remove the crap, which is ironically MUCH more difficult on mobile webbrowsers, than PC.
2) It makes posts more difficult to read. Most of them add a few blank lines and itself, making less fit on a screen without scrolling
3) It's totally unnecessary.
4) It is spam by the apps themselves.
5) Users who need an XDA app, can just type "XDA" into their app stores. So it can't even be argued that it is difficult to find such apps otherwise.
My Proposal:
1) Automatically filter the comment out of posts. They are lame, and unneccessary. Get rid of them automatically (simple string substitution).
2) Give a 3 month warning that users utilising clients which post such garbage, will be given 3 warnings, and will be temp banned if they use them. It is fair.
3) Start a shame list of poorly designed XDA clients.
I agree it isn't the end of the world, but its a lot of wasted productivity, and it's unnecessary. It's bad enough that I have noticed that some people here have massively long/intrusive signatures. Some of those people also have these annoying tags, so they have 3x more "crap", than they do actual post.
I agree with this, but it's up to the admins, will flag this to them.

It's been flagged!
The thing with the signature is that it serves the same purpose as the default signature of your mobile phone in the email client (for example: "Sent from my Verizon Droid X"). It helps to inform people that your message was written while mobile, and so the text might contain errors, or might not be as well thought out as it would have been if you were in front of your computer. The signature is activated by default on our Android apps (and, actually our Windows Phone 7 app).
That said, if there is huge support for turning off the default signature in the application, we'll do it, but this is the first time we're hearing about it being a problem. As mentioned, it serves a practical purpose.
Thanks for the feedback.

I can respect that, but surely, there must be better means of doing so, or at least filter them when using Quoting capabilities.. I recall seeing people get in trouble because they included the comments in their quotes (but I might be imagining it)

Huh? I agree it's useful ... more so than not, at least, as an identifier and a screaming 'hello I'm on my mobile so if this doesn't make sense you know why' kinda thing. I don't see how this is a big deal ... at all. LOL ... ? I also fail to see how it gets in the way of anything, like quoting especially, as it is essentially another single line that still precedes the quote tags.

It's useful IMHO and I am not aware of any issues in including the signature in quotes- it's a single line... who cares? I imagine someone quoted an entire, incredibly long OP, to say "thanks"...
I don't know if it is possible, but how about making the signature from the tapatalk app's just smaller than average text? That way, people can still be informed it was written while mobile, and it would be less obtrusive for the ones who don't like it.... And I'm sorry, I know my normal signature is long

You have to post one way or another - we don't need to know how or what you used to post. It is getting easier to post so more people are posting. Teens are no longer getting flip phones and now populating this forum with more and more silly questions looking for answers you can easily find using google. People have the EVO 4g and think they can post anything they want in the EVO General forum because you have an evo and you are posting in the general section. I want to see general information about the EVO and not other phones on other networks and other random things you find interesting. There are other forums for that.
We all have to start somewhere I know that and when I joined in 2006 the first 4 years I probably posted 100 times and now I am posting like crazy trying to help these people find answers hoping people learn something. People are here 1-2 years with over 1,000 posts.
Yeah, it helps to know that is was posted on a phone but with keyboards and big screens take a couple extra seconds to make sure everything is typed right. I do it why can't other people.
But what if you could have the benefits of knowing which client it was posted with, without having that crap in posts too? Surely that would be better, correct?

No, please, don't turn off signatures in the app. Can't they be stripped, however, the way they're stripped when quoting and responding on the desktop app? I agree, they're difficult to remove if you're responding on the app, but as you said, they're useful to indicate the poster is swyping, or whatever may account for little errors in their post.

Let MS know your wishes for future versions of WP

Microsoft has a website where users can let them know their wishes for future versions of WP: http://windowsphone.uservoice.com/forums/101801-feature-suggestions
Please vote for my suggestion

There you go MS, voted some points to what interested me the greatest.

I just use my gmail to sign in, doesn't really matter. I have not received any spam.
I don't really see how this is new, they have had this for a long time (it was just never added to the official site)
They originally had one for developers that got overrun by consumer suggestions. Therefore they made a 2nd.

Hi guys my first suggestion seems to have gone down quite well. Please vote some another issues which has been bothering me. The ability to swipe through image search results in Bing. You can do that in the IOS Bing app. Note sure why they've not included this in wp7.

Ringtones

I was happy at the fact that Mango was FINALLY supporting custom ringtones. But i dont see who is the stupid person at microsoft who made the decision to have a 40 sec limit on them. Now I gotta edit all of the songs.
Is there a website you all use that have already songs that are already under that limit?
I think someone should make an app for that to make that process easier
Umm...40 seconds, since after that the network either goes to voicemail or hangs up.
Audacity is freeware.
I think most people slice their music as well, people rarely start a ringtone from the beginning of a song. It's more like the chorus that's ringing.
I know the iPhone has the same restriction, and I would bet there is something similar on Android as well (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
i found this website makes it so easy and fast.

WP7 restrictions is similar to IOS, they try and make you pay for tones on IOS.
No restrictions at all on Android.
I thought I read that Android has a size limit (in bytes, not seconds) on ringtone files.
^ nope. No restrictions.
Cool. Thanks for the clarification.

Just remember to keep the files at 112 Kbps or under.

I understand his sensitivity. The trolls had disappeared from the forums for a good period of time and a few are now back, but people have no tolerance for them and you can see that in the responses to their posts.
I understand his sensitivity too, but people need to keep things in context. vetvito was answering a question that I asked, because the OP had complained that Microsoft was "stupid" for implementing a 40 second limit on ringtones. My intent was to show that WP7.5 was not unique in that limit, and I had posted that I knew that iOS had the exact same restriction, and wondered whether Android did as well. He answered my question, that was all.
BTW, I do think the argument about alarms is a valid one. Until that was mentioned, I didn't even realize that our new custom ringtones could be used for alarms. I think it would be worth a suggestion to Microsoft to have a longer (or no) limit on them, given that the can be used for both ringtones and alarms.

what u expect the ringtone to be the entire length of the song? get real!
40 seconds definitely seems fine. If my phone is still ringing after 40 seconds, something is usually wrong.
