if there are a few people who i don't want to show up when i open contacts on my phone (for whatever reason), and i put them into a separate group on my google account...is there a way to hide certain groups?
i know that if i remove them from "my contacts" they don't show up on the phone (but will still be saved on my account under "all contacts" but if i put them into a group, they always get added back into "my contacts" and therefore show up on my phone. even if i then remove them from "my contacts" if they're in a group they will still show up on the phone...
so again, i want to put a group of people together and hide just that group. there's gotta be a way to do this...right?
Wow how many mistresses do you have? ..i wish I had your problem. Lol.
Try going to the Gmail contact manager and removing them from My Contacts and see if that works.

contacts app>menu button>view>toggle depending on which you want to show and not show. what i'd say is remove them from the "my contacts" online, and then disable "all contacts" on your device. then it'll be online, but they won't show up in your phonebook. also easily reversable. only a label change.
think of it like the arciving function on gmail. it's not deleted, it's just removed from the "inbox" label. if you go to "all mail" it'll show up there.

This is great, the key is to remove from "My Contacts". Put them into a new group and deselect that in Android contacts properties. Thanks mucho.

By default, all of my gmail contacts synced to the phone were under the "Friends" category and all showed up under the ALL category.
However, the moment I change the category on a contact, it no longer shows up under ALL. Consequently, if I change the contact to be under no category, the contact disappears altogether.
Is this a bug ? If so, any workaround ?
Hmm, some more info.
Went into gmail, and all of the contacts missing from ALL were no longer in the "My Contacts" group. Now this group cannot be added to manually, but simply adding a contact to another group automatically adds it to this group also.
So the workaround for me was to add all of the missing contacts to a new group (made up) and then immediately remove them again. Sync this to the phone, and they now show up correctly in ALL.
Sounds like a bug with changes on the phone removing the contact from the "My Contacts" group. Anywhere this can be raised as a bug to have fixed ?
I'm having all sorts of issues with contacts. For one the people app refuses to remember the settings to also show facebook contacts. Because for some reason they think some of my contacts are in fact facebook contacts and they don't show up anymore under gmail.
Really seems like a total mess to me : (
Guess it will take some time to figure out what is what with all the linking and things going on.
You are not alone by any means. Both my mate and I are are having similar problems.
You are right that all contacts get download to the phone correctly and show up under "All" as you'd expect but when you add them to another group, i.e. Friends, they do get added to the group but disappear from "All". Remove them from the group and they disappear altogether. However, they are still on the phone as you can find them through the "Search People" app.
I went online to my Google contacts, at contacts.google.com, and found these contacts had been removed from the "My Contacts" folder but appeared instead in "All Contacts". I moved them back to "My Contacts" and they reappeared on my phone.
Surely if you add a contact to a group it should still appear under "All" contacts as well as the group it's been added to?
Workaround??
Been looking into this a bit more....
It seems that you can add contacts to the default groups on the phone but they will be removed from the "All" contacts list [BUG??!! - I'm sure my wife's Hero doesn't do this]. To get them back, and appear in both the group/s and the "All" list, you have to:
1. Login to Google Contacts Manager, www.google.com/contacts.
2. Remove these contacts from My Contacts. They will go to All Contacts.
3. Sync the contacts on the phone.
4. In Google Contacts Manager, move the contacts back to My Contacts.
5. Re-sync the contacts on the phone.
...a real PITA but it just worked for me.
Alternatively, you can control the Groups directly online in the Google Contacts Manager however this only works for new groups or groups that co-exist by default. Some groups on the phone do not directly correspond with those in the Manager and vice versa so if you add a new group to the Manager of a name that already exists on the phone you'll get a duplicate group on the phone.
The kicker is that if you create your own groups on the phone or in the Contacts Manager then everything works without a hitch.
Hi all,
any of you ever tried to sync only one (or more) specific contacts group?
I remember of such a function in Android 1.6, and it would be great to have it back on 2.1 too (maybe it's there and it's just me who cannot find it).
I don't like to have ALL the Google contacts sync'ed.
Thnx
Can't be done. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=662949
Thanks Cleargrey,
would you tell me if you ever tried to sync Outlook with the phone did you manage to do so? It seems my HTC sync won't sync, telling me no errors but no contacts sync'ed as well
I also tried to sync Outlook with Goole, and found a good prog to do so (Go contacts sync) since I don't want ot go over with CSV import/export, but it states it syncs pictures too, and it doesn't...
Cleargrey, just a little info to better understand the following HTC answer:
A1. It is not possible to sync just 'My Contacts', it would always be 'Google Contacts, or 'All Contacts'.
what do they mean with "Google Contacts or All Contacts"? Is it just basically a different way of referring to the same "All Contacts" group?
I'm asking because I just checked on Google Accounts and I didn't see anything like "Google Contacts"
There does seem to be some confusion over the various contact lists/groups on the phone and on Google Contacts.
BTW, Google Contacts can be accessed through your Gmail account (left side menu -> Contacts) or directly at www.google.com/contacts.
Basically:
All [phone] = My Contacts [Google Contacts]
Favorites [phone] = Starred in Android [Google Contacts]
Co-workers [phone] = Collegues [Google Contacts]
Family, Friends [phone] = Family, Friends [Google Contacts] resp.
user created groups [phone] = user created groups [Google Contacts], and vice versa.
All Contacts [Google Contacts] is never sync'ed on the phone.
All the above get sync'ed together, you can't cherry pick.
Sorry to correct you JT, but if I access Google Contacts on my desktop I find "All Contact" contains 643 contacts.
Now, doing the same on my phone (Contacts -> Menu btn -> view) I see "Google (643)".
Hence my phone sync'ed All Contacts.
It would be great if it would have sync'ed "My contacts" only, cuz even if it's not a subgroup, it only contains contacts I want to carry on the phone
Two very quick questions I'd love some help with.
1. Whats the quickest way to type a new sms message? When I open the messages icon and choose "new message" it lists ALL of my contacts. Anyone I EVER emailed in my life. 1000s. I justwant to see my 100 or so SIM contacts as I want to write an SMS message. any way around this?
2. I clicked on new message (in the messages icon) and typed in an email address. The phone then sent the email as an attached MMS message via my phone service provider? I assumed it would use my gmail details to send it? Am I set up wrong?
Thanks, Got the desire yesterday. First time on android. bit lost really. not as intuitive as expected, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it.
fastest way to send sms to a specific contact is to go to "Contacts", look for the person you wantto send the sms to, and then click not on the name but on the picture (or on the pic placeholder): some icons will show up so that you cna choose what you want to do. Click on message and you're good to go.
your problem is the same to me: I DO NOT want all my google contacts on my phone cuz everytime I have to do something with contcts (apart from phone, where I checked "show only contacts with tel number") it will fill my eyes with unwanted persons

Hmm, glad mine doesn't do that! Anyhow, go to your "All" contacts list on your phone, then MENU button -> View, un-check "Show auto Gmail contacts".
Seems I may have been wrong, Google Contacts' All Contacts do indeed seem to get sync'd in their entirety but this check box allows you to mask what you don't want to see.
checked that, and will test functionalities for some days, but going to "search contacts" still shows up all Google contacts.
This is something really pissing me off.
For real: I can't understand why 1.6 had the opportunity to select the groups and 2.1 does not!!!
The Contacts/People feature seems a bit confusing to me.
The best way I've found of managing contacts is to create a group called 'Phonebook' and just use the People widget to display that group on one of my home-screens.
I can then add or remove anyone I like in there and it's easy to pick someone to call/text. The widget looks pretty cool too with everyone's facebook pics.
Seems much easier than viewing all People and scrolling through loads of Facebook contacts I don't need or Google contacts with only an e-mail address.
I can manage it all online under my Google account as well so setting it up only took a couple of minutes.
See here for a workaround for syncing just my contacts:

On my Hero, I could launch the People app, go in to the contact groups, hit Settings, and set which contact groups to sync. I don't see this option, at least under Fresh 0.2. Has this been removed from this Android build, or moved somewhere else? It's driving me crazy having all these contacts; I just want to sync the "My Contacts" group!
Thanks in advance,

Not exactly what I'm referring to... In GMail, I have over 150 contacts under "All Contacts." I also have another contact group called "My Contacts" with about 60 people (friends, family, etc).
On the Hero, I could tell it to only sync specific groups, which I would only select "My Contacts". With what you posted, I either sync all Google contacts or not, but with the option to exclude auto-gmail contacts. That's not what I want; I want to sync only specific groups.

you were not listening lol if you check "show auto gmail contacts" then YES you will see ALL CONTACTS...if you just check "GOOGLE" then you will only see the "my contacts"... the number next to google is the all contacts number but in reality it will only show the my contacts in your phone....
i also have 133 "all contacts" in my gmail... the number next to google shows you the number of ALL google contacts, NOT how many contacts it will sync with your phone....
do a test go to your Google contacts page online and just see if one of the contacts from all contacts is in your phone it shouldnt be..
so you see the number under the view screen next to the word "google" shows the "all contacts" number but it doesnt actually put those contacts in your contact list...just the ones who are in "my contacts"
like i said just do a test and see if one of your "all contacts" contact is in your phone contacts... i think you will find that it wont be...

I have one thats driving me nuts about contacts.
I want to have a custom number name, not just phone one, phone two, work, work2, home, I want to be able to name it. So, like for work. I can put my Company, then names by the numbers. Or can you group the numbers with the company name?
Thanks
Here is what I'm trying to do. I would like the "contacts" app to display only the contacts that i have saved to my Google account. I would like those contacts to have their pictures imported from Facebook. If there are contacts with names that don't match their Facebook name exactly, I'd like to be able to link them up.
What is happening right now is that if I only sync existing contacts with Facebook and/or Haxsync, I end up with a LOT of missing pictures. When I "sync all", I end up with all of my Facebook friends populating my contacts app.
Maybe I'm doing it in the wrong order? I assume I can remove my Facebook and Haxsync apps (or clear data), then clear data in the contacts app to start from scratch. What are the steps I need to take from there/
1. Only Google contacts displayed.
2. Contact pictures populated from Facebook.
3. Ability to join names without exact match.
Thank you in advance for the help.
You can sync all with the Facebook app, then join the contacts for the profile pictures within each contact (there is a merge/join contacts option). For names that don't match, they let you manually choose whoever you want to merge, so names don't have to be the same. After that is all done, go to your contacts and click the menu button, there should be an option "Contacts to Display". Hit that, then select your Google account. Enjoy
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
The other part is that if you hit the menu button in contacts and select "Contacts to display" (you may have to scroll the list down), you then can go down to "Custom List" and click the gear icon to the right. That will allow you to select which contacts display on your phone.
I get the feeling I'm beating a dead horse, but I'll try it anyway, 'cause it's driving me crazy:
S4 mini, stock 4.4.2
I have 3 google accounts set up, FB (sync disabled) and Shazzam (if it should matter).
Problem: I can't get "Other contacts" (aka Unassigned) to not show in the contact list. I've tried the following:
- Delete contacts from "Other contacts" in Google Contacts and disabling contact creation from email: Not really an option. I do use email like crazy for work and gmail's address autocomplete on all those unknown addresses is a blessing. Gmail seems to lose this magic skill if I mess with the "Other contacts".
- Uncheck "All other contacts" from "Contacts to display": doesn't seem to do anything; I still have the "Other contacts" listed under the "Unassigned" group. It's the same whether I disable "All other contacts" on any and all accounts.
- Remove sync group "All other contacts" : seems to stop showing/syncing all contacts for that account (the contacts I do want to sync are in "My contacts"; when I remove sync group "All other contacts" the contacts in "My contacts" disappear too, although "My contact" is checked for display and still listed in "Groups" but now has 0 contacts.
I've crawled around all topics on this matter, but it doesn't look like anyone was able to figure it out. This is something of a last try, it's so annoying for me that I think I'll return the damn phone just for this. It makes it UNUSABLE. This and any Android if there isn't an app or tweak out there to fix it.
