[Q] Rooting with linux on a virtual machine? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I was thinking to bypass the many problems reported here about using unrevoked on a winXP OS by rooting my desire through a ubuntu virtual machine (WmWare).
Can it be done? would I make my life easier or is it better to just risk it with winXP?
Thanks
Luca

Why not use the livecd?

What's that? Sorry mercianary, but I'm an absolute n00b (got the phone 3 weeks ago and I'm still trying to learn.

a live cd lets you boot into an embedded linux os, and run it directly off the cd, unbuntu do the most popular one look here
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Thanks M! I will try that for sure!

I'm using windows 7 Ultimate x64, install the jdk as stated. but the eclipse and Android SDK version is kinda outdated.
I tried opening eclipse, then it says something about the java not in path bla bla bla~~ i tried setting the path but no go.
Anyone can guide me to an easy/noob proof on how to install the Android SDK for Android 2.2?

you open a command prompt, navigate to the tools folder in the android sdk and run whatever adb command you want as long as you have htc sync installed your computer already has all the nessesary drivers... The android sdk is ment for software development, hence sdk (software development kit) the quickstart is ment for people who intend to use it for development, we only need a small part of the sdk known as adb
i got this error, see attachment.

[Q] Rooting Evo on mac

I have been looking through all the forums. I just got my Evo back the charging port broke and now I want to root my new Evo. Problem is that I only have a Mac and none of the methods work for the Mac I have Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Unrevoked 3 doesn't run on it... So what are my options. I have been fooling around with it for the last couple hours.
Unrevoked does work on macs. When you went to the page, did you download the mac os version?
Edit: http://unrevoked.com/recovery/ On the second line on the right...download for mac os
where did you read that? i rooted back in 11/10 with that os.
easiest full root method out.
just try it.
yea, ive rooted 3 evos on my mac. easier than windows.
oh, Unrevoked.
Thanks, however when I try to open Unrevoked on my Mac it says.
"You Cannot use this version of the application Reflash with this version of Mac OS X."

Apparently only the Snow Leopard version for OS X is supported for mac. Now to the alternative method.

What is the alternative method? I can't use most root methods because they need HTC Sync.
edit: just saw something about alternatives.
It requires Windows.
You Will Need:
A windows machine
HTC Sync that can be found on Sprint's website. HTC Sync 2.0.35.exe

Or more money. Not really looking to upgrade my OS anytime soon.
That's why I don't use macs...http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-rooting-roms-hacks/17766-how-full-root-evo-4g-mac.html You'll have to register to get the link downloads, but that seems to be your best option.
Just upgrade your OS. ****, bootleg it then buy Lion OS when it cones out.

[Q] Root / Flash from Linux -- Help a newbye find he`s way around

Hello boys,
Just got my Gnex the other day and I`m looking a for a nice how-to on how to root / flash it from under Linux.
I did poke around the forumz for a couple of hours, got nothing of of real value.
I set my eyes on Android Revolution HD / CM10 ROMS and I`m eager to take them for the proverbial "spin".
Now, I`m not new to the whole Android ecosystem - just ditched my GODroid - but I`m clueless on how things are done the Sammy way.
I *could* install a VM with some Windows on it and use Kies / Gnex TookKit but I`ll rather do it straight from Linux.
So, if anyone here could point me in the wright direction I would be more that grateful.

Don't use a toolkit. You can certainly flash your gnex with linux. Read this post, it will point you in the right direction: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812959
Same way as windows just need the Linux SDK.
./fastboot OEM unlock
./fastboot flash recovery name-of-recovery.img
Flash ROM and enjoy

If he installs android linux sdk, and his distro does it right, it will either install it into a folder which is already in $PATH, or will require the user to do so. After this is done, 'sudo fastboot options' will work just fine. The way you're saying, works if pwd is the same as fastboot binary.

Quick note for anyone having the same questions:
You must start the adb-server via sudo / root, otherwise the phone won`t be detected. So do :
<code> sudo adb start-server</code>

Rooting on MAC

Hello
I have been trying to root my Galaxy S3 and on my mac, but the Heimdall program doesn't work. Is there any other way to root without use the Heimdal progam.
Thanks for the help.
Nope, don't believe so...sorry.
Actually, if you can get adb running on MAC, i think the method from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827518&highlight=odin should work
Thanks.....this is way too difficult...I'm a total noobie.

I used VMware (30 day trial) and a free preview of Windows 8. I used the instructions in the thread below once i got windows up and running.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
Oh and it was my first time rooting
I stopped trying and rooted it once I got a Windows Laptop. So much easier.
Yeah VMWare is pretty much a virtual machine that will let you run Windows progs so you should try that and it's pretty easy!

Mount ISO as CD Rom possible?

Hello,
I am coming from the Symbian world and am new to Android so sorry for my maybe noob questions.
I used to mount ISOs as a CD ROM drive with my old Nokia Symbian handset, now I would like to know it this is also possible with Android.
I think there must be a way, because when you connect your Z1C via USB to a PC, a notification appears for installing the PC Companion Software. And if you tap on it the Z1C mounts a CD Drive with the setup files for it.
So can we use this to mount our own ISOs?
You've answered your own question. What are you trying to acheive?
I want to mount a live CD for Linux. So is it possible when the phone is rooted and I just find the ISO file and replace it with mine?
Found using "mount live cd android" - http://let-the-reader-understand.bl...w-to-use-your-android-phone-as-linux.html?m=1

Thank you I will try it.
I was hoping for an easier solution for a new user like me.
....
I read the instruction now but this is not what I was looking for actually...
I just wanted to run the iso as a rescue disk in live cd mode or installation disk.
Thought that might have done the trick, back to Google then I guess unless others have an idea.

That app just sounds perfect... My Z1C is not rooted yet, I wanted to wait until LP but this would definitely be the killer reason for rooting it now.
Has anyone tried it with the Z1C already? Does it work for us with root or do we have to use a custom kernel too, which would force me to unlock the bootloader.
