I can't ping my phone, can ping everything else in the house, including another phone (droid eris which is also using a custom rom) I am wondering if anyone has any ideas or if they can point me to another forum that might be able to help me better. The rom I am using is Ruby 1.1.1.
you got some troubleshooting to do... i would say the easiest is to just try to hit the phone's IP on another port (service) like samba, ssh, etc.
did u try to ping that phone on another rom? nandroid restore another rom and find out, but as far as ruby i have no idea.

yes it has worked before, so I'm pretty sure it isn't hardware. So ([email protected])yeah I suppose it's the ROM. I guess I am wondering if anyone knows of where I would look IN the rom, as to what would be blocking ping. And the reason I was using ping is because all the the computer/phone apps that I try to use don't work, no matter what port they say to use. I've tried port 80, 5565, 5555, 8080. And several different apps.
I am a computer tech, so I'm not a complete dummy when it comes to this stuff. lol
I've done the trouble shooting on my router (all computers ping each other, even another droid on the network). I figured instead of dealing with the apps, ping is where I should start. Because an app may not work, but a simple ping should.
I know a bit about linux but not enough to start digging in the ROM on my own. I just need someone to give me something to look at.
Or where else I should look for advice for that matter.

I did find out it was an issue with the custom ROM I was running. My issue in particular wasn't a common issue, but problems with the wireless in general was something that was common to CM6 at the time. It has been fixed since then tho. Are you on your home network while trying to ping?

I still have same problem. I use a custom ROM based on CJM7 and it seems to be a limitation (or bug) of the ROM... I hope this limitation will be removed in future releases...

Hey guys so I am running one of the nightly builds of Cyanogen. I would friggin LOVE to update but when I did to once of the final builds my USB connects for a couple seconds then disconnects and acts like its not even hooked up.... I'm like ok so I restored my nandroid backup and it worked fine. I figured it was Cyanogen bug so I switched to baked snack and the SAME THING happens. My computer connects for a couple seconds then disconnects. Here is the ***** of it - i plugged it into my girlfriends computer and it stays connected. There is something on my computer disconnecting it. I used to have PDAnet and easy tether installed so I thought it was that but those are long gone.... I also reinstalled the HTC sync software. Any ideas guys? ****s really annoying.
*Bump*
Please help?
BUMP.
Seriously cmon. I see so many stupid questions on here like which tablet is better but nobody can help with my EVO usb problem?

You could have gone without that last part there...
Try using an Linux LiveCD (OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, etc.) or something and see if the same thing happens. You need to determine if it's a software or hardware issue.
This has happened to me before. Try this

Please read.
I already mentioned I plugged it into my girlfriends laptop and it does NOT disconnect. Its a software issue - I'm trying to determine what exactly it is.

You my good sir are being quite rude. For someone who is trying to ask for help, you could be a lot more polite about it...
I guess I'll have to break this down for you...
Hardware issue (Phone): No.
Hardware issue (Computer): Possible.
Software issue (Computer): Possible.
Running a Linux LiveCD will help you isolate your issues to either hardware or software on _your_ computer. If it still happens on the LiveCD, then your hardware is messed up. If you don't have any problems, then it's purely a software thing.

I'm not being rude you just have no idea what you are talking about. Being honest does not mean I'm being rude.
As I have stated for the third time now, it works FINE on other laptops and it works fine on the buggy nightly builds. It IS a software issue. Again - it IS A SOFTWARE ISSUE. Now, whether it is on my phones end or my computers I'm not sure. Please stop with the linux recommendation because that wont isolate crap.
Anyone else? This can't be the first time this is happened.
this is happening to me too, tried the fix from the link as well. Did not help also got it from a cm6 nightly. Now on a sense rom and still the same issue\
I had to restore from a PCIMG files used for the rooting process alittle inconvenient but of well
Hmm can you please explain what you did exactly and how to replicate. Also, why do you think this problem occurred?
first of all thank you for viewing,
i have a problem with any rom running CM or gingerbread when trying to join a wireless connection that has a hidden SSID at WPA2 security.
i have no problems connecting to any other wireless connection as long as they are not configure as mention above.
now i would claim that there is a problem with the wireless configuration and the phone trying to handshake with it but this is not the issues with most roms.
because it works fine with most roms but does not with a few other roms i am sure that this is not hardware related.
here is a few troubleshooting steps i have gone through in order to see what is the source of the problem.
1st) i have loaded and tested every radio for the Inc (including the EVO radio) but the problems persist.
2nd) i have loaded and tested a variations of kernels to see if this is a cause of the problem and no luck (i tend to leave the Dev's choice in kernel alone in most cases)
any advise will be grateful please as i am at a lost and with search for people in my same place i have not found any yet.
please someone help i love playing with the Roms but this is starting to kill my experience as being able to connect to hidden and secure wifi is a must for me.
thank you.

silverramsrt,
thank you for the search and post, so what i gather from the 2 other instances of the same problem there is no fix for this as of now other than to broadcast you SSID.
i just cant imagine why would the developer version of Gingerbread does not have this working and i hope some one finds a fix for it or that a fixed version is added to the full release.
i know, i know high hopes.
thank you
You're welcome. It won't be long before one of the incredible devs tackle this. (pun intended)
I wanted to switch to CM7 from Leedroid, which I did. Everything worked fine except I couldn't find my WiFi, So i tried several other Radios, still didn't work. And then I flashed 2 other ROM's, just to see if works. Oxygen and MIUI, still the same problem on both. And later i switched to the ICS Beta ROM. And WIFI worked perfectly, with the same radio as I had before. I could stay with ICS since WiFi worked there, but I need A2SD+ so I won't run out of storage. So I switched to some different version of MIUI called MIUI_Au which I really like and want to keep, has everything I need. But still the same problem (no WiFi). Well, But I wanted to go further. So I tried creating a portable WIFI hotspot on 2 other smartphones. And I was able to connect to both of them. So I think it may have something to do with my router, but we got 3 smartphones and 6 computers connected to it and everything works perfect, it's just my Desire that won't find it.
Full wipe, cache + dalvik cache for every ROM flash. What's wrong?
go closer to the router..... I found CM7 based roms tend to have lower signal strength than sense roms.... might help might not....

Thanks for the reply, but I've already tried that without success..
EDIT: I had CM7 way before Leedroid, and wifi worked perfect.
Does the phone actually see the signal and fail to connect or is it not seeing it at all? Either way, try rebooting the router and the phone and try again and also try disabling security on the router temporarily and see if it will connect. You may also want to check that the router is actually broadcasting a visible SSID and if not then you should maybe try enabling that also.

Can't even find it.. What you mean with "Broadcasting a visible SSID" i can see it's SSID on other smartphones and stuff if that's what you mean. I have not tried disabling the encryption on the router yet, but I had similar encryption on the other WiFi hotspots and it worked perfect. Can flashing older radios help maybe? Thanks.
Whatever, flashed back to Leedroid, maybe not my first choice. But at least the Wifi works, feel free to lock this thread.
Cm is set to see all channels? If you use a higher channel for wifi cyanogen does not see it by default.
In connections press menu and select the higher channels

Well, had you had the patience to sort your router out (which I'm pretty sure was at fault and not the phone) then maybe you wouldn't need to run a less preferable ROM. Indeed, had you followed my advice and disabled the router security temporarily then we may have had some idea if we were on the right road. Anyway, good luck with your chosen ROM.

Yeah I know, but a family member is going to have the phone from now on, and she doesn't have a 3G card so she really needs WiFi. I'm gonna try fixing it another time maybe, Can you just give a hint on what to do, we say if I disable the security on the router, and it works. what should I do next, I won't leave my router without WPA2 encryption. Thanks

Yay! I had the same issue: everyone else could see the SSID but me and I'm running CM7 (Nexus One). Then I saw your suggestion and discovered a menu I wasn't even aware of(!) and configured CM7 to see all 14 channels and, voila, it works! (Not sure what the default was as neither option was enabled.) THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
P.S. Could anyone please tell me why oh why CM7 has this option and why it is not set to a value that works by deafult?

So just being real brief, gederom on my Kindle Fire. Works great, no issues but for a WiFi issue. When wandering away from one access point and towards another it won't hop unless it completely loses the signal to the first. This means that usually I'll be standing on top of one at the end of my house while it's still talking to another that's barely hanging on without even a single bar. I'm not sure if this is an issue with the rom or if there was something the stock Kindle Fire rom was doing to automate the process.
Is this occurring due to a bad install or is this just a current issue, and is there an app I can get that would solve this problem for me?
Any help is much appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that's just how Android was built. I cannot think of any devices at the current time that can connect to more than one wifi at a time. Also, if this feature was implemented, it would probably create a pause in internet connection which could be very annoying if you were on a Skype call or were downloading a file.

I don't mean connecting to multiple access points, but disconnecting from the one that has the very poor signal, and hopping to the nearest one with a full signal. The stock Fire OS did it. It really seems like it should be something that every wireless device is capable of. I guess I'll look at wireless configurations and see if there's anything about how aggressive the card is when finding better signals to attach to.
I've not had that problem with my GedeROM installation, but then again, I don't have multiple access points. Try a different ROM. If this feature is very important to you, you might even consider switching back to the original ROM, or the MoDaCo ROM which is stock with Play Store.
Will pay someone to help me UNDERSTAND and fix this issue I have.
I have ATT HTC ONE M8 - S-OFF, CID 1111111
I have successfully used all Sense ROMs. But if I flash ANY AOSP ROM I have no WIFI whatsoever. It connects sometimes and drops right off. I can't use any non-Sense ROMs because of this and I am starting to get PO-ed.
Please help, reward in it.
I was told that wifi is like this because of HTC having a closed source wifi driver. Regular unsecured networks you should be able to connect to, but secured connections you'll have to be extremely close to the router to connect. Frustrating, I know.

Yes, that information is all I have been able to uncover actually. But I dont understand how its not really a big deal for anyone else? Haha.
I mean all these people seem to be using these AOSP ROMs....but I am the only one who seems to care that I have absolutely no wifi sitting on my couch at home?
Strange that people are just 'dealing'
Anyway - thanks

It is and has been a big deal for others. You can see this in pretty much every AOSP thread we have here. Only a few of you guys are experiencing no wifi at all. There's only a couple of options that can be done next to "just dealing" which is digging into the code and trying to fix it or using a non AOSP based ROM.
Try this if you want and test your wifi and let me know if it's any better.

If I got great 4G signal here at work I probably wouldn't mind as much about not being able to connect to the network here where you have to log in to use the free WiFi. I can never get to the acceptance page. Since there is free WiFi here I might as well use it but I can't. CarbonROM seems to be PERFECT aside from the WiFi issue plaguing all AOSP ROMs at the moment.
I just hope that someone can confirm that it is an issue that is being looked into. I'm a little curious as to why HTC would lock down its WiFi drivers...
I have had the same problem as you on all AOSP roms except Liquidsmooth. I flashed liquidsmooth beta (from the HTC m8 original thread) and wifi worked while it didn't on all of the others. The most current one is running on 4.4.3 and that may have something to do with it. I really want to flash Paranoid but Im waiting on 4.4.3. Liquidsmooth is a very stable rom if you want to check it out. I saw on a PA Google+ post that the 4.4.3 update may help fix this issue so I would wait... Although, I could be wrong
I hope that it gets resolved soon. I am so sick of using Sense. In fact, I hate all stock interpretations of Android. AOSP or die.

Have you tried playing with the WIFi module? If it is working on one, then you should be able to use it's WIFI module on another. If you aren't getting any wifi at all, well that sounds like a kernel module issue to me.
What kernel are you using?
My problem isn't connecting to WiFi, I can do that just fine. I haven't tried connecting to a secure password-protected network yet, but "Guest" access points I can't get to the page where you accept the terms of use unless I'm a few feet from the router. I don't know of any ROM that has allowed me to connect farther away from it yet. All the ROMs I have tried seem to let me use unsecured access points with no problem.
On AOSP ROMs I've tried the included Kernel baked into the ROM and Excaliber 0.3.
On Sense I'm on Faux.
