Last night, out of the blue, my Dinc started going to a black screen requiring battery pull to get to anything interactive, then soon after would go back to black screen again. All that would show up is botoom hard buttons and top notification bar but all buttons, including power button were useless. Required battery pull. I am on root running SkyRaider but this happened when I tried to flash Froyo ROM also. I do use Titanium Backup. When you get this far into rooting and trying new ROMs its really hard to tell where the problem actually is. I want to use Titanium, thats why I have it, it would suck to not be able to get my apps back.
Hope someone has some insight to this, or at least how to troubleshoot it.
Wipe
I would use titanium to back up apps no data though. hopefully you have a nandroid you can flash back to, but first do titanium then clockwork and wipe/ factory/ wipe cache/ then advanced and wipe dalvik, basically wipe everything except your sd card. then reflash your nandroid or any rom that you know works. make sure the rom is already on your sd card though.
This really sucked. Tried everything, even nandroid was blacking out on early interactions. I had to wipe everything, including onboard and sd card then start completely from scratch. Good thing I had some screenshots to remember some apps, but it took hours to reload eerything. Best thing I can figure was it was a corrupt file somewhere and unable to weed it out I had to start from scratch.
Prior to that I did all the wipes and did attempt nandroid, none of that worked. Now I'm making backups of my SD card and onboard mem to avoid having to wipe that all over again. PIA!!!!
It almost sounds like your screen is going out. Do you see image tearing before it blacks out? What kernel are you using? DO you have it OC'd?
this is exactly what my phone started doing yesterday! so u wiped ur sd card and it all worked again?

Suffice to say i'm a bit unclear about this... my scenario
currently running leedroid 2.3d with ext3 app partion and I wanted to test out some of the gingerbread ports so far.
If I do a nandroid wipe, and the clear the app partion, and wipe through clockwork, install the new gingerbread rom, decide I dont like it. Can I still restore from the nandroid backup and have lost nothing... I realize it may sound like an obvious question but I couldnt find any conformation on that and really dont want to loose my current setup
Yes, assuming you nandroid before you do the full wipe
To be clear -
Nandroid backups take a complete image of the phone (ROM, apps, homescreen settings...) which is used to put everything right back where it was before you started messing with it.
Take a backup before you do anything, personally I have about 5 or 6 now (usually 2 or 3 on the phone itself, and a couple of trusted older ones copied onto my laptop) so I can get back to a working system. I keep a spreadsheet list of exactly what they are (ROM, setup, kernel if appropriate) so I know which one to restore to. Maybe it's just me but I find "2011-02-02-15.43.53" less than helpful as a restore point name.
Once you have a backup I'd also suggest rebooting, connecting to your computer and backing up the contents of your SD card. So far I've had one card die completely on me, luckily for me there was nothing irreplaceable on it. Backups, like all other files, can be copied from one SD card to another.
Thanks to both of you that was exactly the clarification I was looking for
I just recently went from the stock kernel with cwm eg30 deodexed root/busy box with 3g wifi hack to the new EL13 located below. (deodexed and modem flashed)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389874
I did a backup in titanium pro and cwm before starting.
The flashing went ok for the modem and the rom. I rebooted after wiping the cache and all and everything seemed ok.
I then started getting force closes and the launcher/phone would reboot. So thinking that there was some app data not installed right i went to do a restore in titanium and it would not complete do to the locking up/rebooting. I booted into cwm recovery to do an advanced restore and it keeps saying it cant access the folder ==> no files found and then goes back to main menu. I tried the fixed permissions and no change. The files are there I can see them on the internal sd as well as the copy i made to the external sd.
Is there something else I need to do? i cant seem to get it to restore.
I did end up clearing user data through cwm and it seemed to be successful except for the secure android piece of it. I rebooted an no force closes. I then ran titanium all apps+data +system data. 90% seems to restore except for widgets being set up on the home screen and widget locker. I can reset those up manually.
I want to make sure I am not going to have more force closing so I would prefer to restore all from the cwm nand if possible.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Something is wrong with the current recoveries for our phones in my opinion.
Maybe it's something we are doing, would be nice if a DEV could speak up but here is what I've noticed. I'm runing Calk's E4GT Rom. Is uses Rouge kernels/recovery and 99% of the time when I do a Nandroid backup when I try to restore is says something like files folders couldn't be found and drops back to menu.
Now if I mount my phones internal memory OR SDCard depending what I used, I'm finding my recoveries ON my device but for example I'm finding them in places like:
/smmc/smmc/bmmc/*
or
/sdcard/sdcard/*
* being the actual directory the backup is in.
That said if I MOVE those date coded folders to /clockworkmod/backup/* all the sudden the phone sees them.
It's making the Nandroid backups in the WRONG dir 99% of the time and I've had this happen at least a dozen or so times. Matter of fact, it just happened yesterday. My Nandroids showed up in /sdcard/sdcard/* so I moved the dated folder to the clockworkmod folder as mentioned and poof, it works. Then I made a another Nandroid backup and it made it in the right directory (/clockworkmod/backup/).
Who knows... DEV's? On a side note, I also had this happen with just the standard CWM as well as the ACS hacked one, not just the Rouge version.
Thanks. I figured this is what was happening. I did try coping a few things and nothing would help in my case. I did run another backup and it finally seen that one on the sd card.
When i do a restore do I need to wipe user data ect first?
The reason i asked, is I am on the EL13 and i am trying to trouble shoot why at certain points after installing apps or going into usb mode (usb debuging on) and then dismounting the phone, then unplugging the cable my phone freaks out, and basically ends up doing a quick reboot, (quick sprint splash screen and then back to the lock screen as the launcher loads) well tries to load. It usually fails. Then i have to power cycle the phone and all seems fine. Sometimes I get in a reboot loop though. I don't as far as I know have any kind of app moved to sd card outside of games that would have a service running that would freak out when in usb mode.
btw the apps were set up the same way that they were on my stock rooted only eg30 image and i had no issues like this whatsoever on that. I have only had these problems since going to the el13 on here. Both the deodexed and odexed and the sock odin version.
So I did a nan restore before the installing of my apps. Just a clean cwm/root el13 image and when I booted back all was fine until i install my apps again. Cleanly from market or amazon. When I try to move the game to the internal storage via the built in app management program it errors out/fails then I do it again and it moves over. Every now and then i get a device is full error message when installing apps when i clearly have tons of room left on the rom and internal sd.)
reg storage is only 200 megs used with 1.8 gig free and the internal sd has 10 gig free.
So I dont know why this would be happening when I do a restore with cwm. Maybe i didnt do something right.
I did wipe the dalvik/cache before booting though. it had no effect.
do a complete wipe, and restart all over again. the issue lies in the recoveries most of the time because one kernel uses clockwork while others use their own recoveries. restoring backups made by other recoveries can give you issues. i personally only like clockwork recoveries and the others just annoy me lol.

They were all clock work backups/restores from the same build/flash/os build/version
Would even restoring some app data via titanium be bad? I dont do all data just on some games, and apps. Never anything system related
For me this issue was NOT because I changed recoveries which all of them are based on CWM anyway but that is besides the point.
I could have Team Rouges Recover based on CWM flashed, wipe my phone, and this issue comes up.
Seems to do it with all the recoveries though on and off.
For the record, running amon ra 3.0.7...(I forget exact version, it's blue and uses capacitive back button) and I wiped everything 3 times before flashing the following ROMs.
Ok so the other night I went ahead and tried Deck's ICS ROM alpha 5. For the most part, a very beautiful port and can't wait till it stabilizes a little more. I can tell It's going to be a beast. But prior to flashing, I did a full nandroid like I always do, and TB backup. Flashed said ROM, tried to restore apps, few complications; couldn't restore games, certain apps such as zedge, or maps. Had to install from market because it would hang, but still restored data upon install. Figured this was due to the ROM having bugs....
Albeit beautiful, couldn't live without calendar, and certain apps wouldn't work. So I restored my decks 1.3d nandroid and instantly got hit with problems. Half my apps showed as properly installed, half of those actually worked without FC'ing. Downloaded maps cuz again couldn't restore, and instantly FC. So I reboot, and get constant FC's from random apps. So I wipe again, this time everything beside sd 4 times, still same problems. So since I wasn't on wifi to pull the ROM I uploaded to Dropbox, I simply did factory reset. TB now restored fine besides games which still puzzles me, but maps went fine.
I've had similar problems with Nandroid in the past. The only use I seem to get is just maintaining the ROM, everything else is fubar.
What is causing this? Is there a fix? Is it simply a pebkac? (Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair)

I use that version and flash a lot. I've never had anything like that happen. Are you wiping everything except bat stats and SD? Did you try and fix permisissions? Do u run an ext3 or ext4 partition? Could there possibly be a problem with your SD card. Perhaps back everything on it up reformat and partition and restore your stuff to it. Maybe you could run a disk diagnosis program on your computer to see if there are physical errors?
Just a few suggestions

Haven't tried fixed permissions as I just factory reset from in the ROM itself and restored apps as if a fresh ROM, but I will next time issue arises. I have no partition, but have considered doing so but keep putting it off. Been wanting to format my card and one by one out things back on it, but yeah, I wipe everything but bat, unless full, and sd. But I have noticed this issue usually only arises when I have already done a full wipe of everything and try to flash back. If I were to just flash over my current ROM, then restore back, everything works fine....kinda confused...

So I was having issues with MikG and my settings.... Reinstalled aosp system apps by accident over sense system apps and it kept popping up with error messages....
So I wiped everything and reflashed MikG 3.xx and it boots up... But all I see is the wallpaper and status bar. I see no clock/apps, and am never prompted with entering my google info and whatnot.
I also deleted the ROM and put it on again thinking it might be corrupt but I still get this problem. Wtf just happened? Did I just brick my phone?
Gonna try and flash my old Deck 1.3d rom and post back with results

did you factory reset wipe?
I factory reset from within amon ra and wiped each thing individually as well. Flashed the full wipe version of MikG 3.11 and it proceeded to wipe everything again. Everything installs fine, but when it boots, it just shows the MikG walpaper, and the notification bar. No apps, no clock, no new user "welcome to android" prompt either. All I can do is turn the screen on and off.... I have to pull the battery to turn the phone off.
Putting my Deck 1.3d nandroid on my sd card as I type and am going to flash in just a minute to test and see if I can even boot anything...

You sure you got the FULL WIPE version? If you flashed the UPDATE version you will get these exact same problem.
I got both.... originally thinking it was an update TO the ROM itself. (idk why lol) Decided to keep it for if I ever have to reflash the main rom due to a user error....
But no, I made sure I was flashing the full wipe version. You think I should redownload again and try it out? I had the file saved on my friends laptop and hadn't touch it since I put it on my SD card so.... figured I could just delete the one on my SD card and retransfer
Just restored my Deck 1.3d and its booting as I type. Will post back with details.

I'd do a complete wipe on everything and start from scratch. I just got a new SDcard and formatted it and did a fresh install of MikG 3.11 and it runs like no other.
Back up your SDcard to a PC and format and start fresh. I noticed a HUGE difference in function and performance although it sucked loading almost 10gigs of music back on.....lol
you think it might be an error on the sd card like a bad sector?
Just booted back into Decks.... Although the backup of my sd:ext didn't take apparently and it's stock Decks.... Kinda odd; No apps or anything. Or is that supposed to happen? Same wallpaper though....
Gonna try and reflash MikG and if it still doesnt work I'll follow your method. Would rather not as I did that a few months ago when I partitioned my SD card for a2sd lol...
Will post back with results
Redownloaded and flashed MikG full wipe. Its good now. Thanks to you anyway.
I believe my data2sd has corrupted due to my battery. My battery has been a bit ropey for a while now. I charged it fully a few hours ago and hadnt used it, I started playing a game and the battery was at 98% but after a couple minutes use the battery dropped immediately from 98% to 0 and shut down. Apon restarting my device there is literally nothing on the desktop, no widgets no apps and the background has reset back to the standard one. I only have access to a few apps which i presume are on the sd part of the card not the 2gb where everything else lives on the data2sd partition.
I also get an error "The application Google Voice (process com.google.android.apps.googlevoice) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" everytime i restart the phone.
I believe i am experiencing number 11 on the supernova dev support page here: supernova.droidzone.in/category/troubleshooting
I could go through the entire re flashing the ROM route but i had a few questions i wanted answering before to see if its really necessary.
1) I believe not, but is there anything i can do that will just restore the phone back to normal. I stupidly didnt bother creating a restore point with 4ext so reflashing will mean i lose everything.
2) Can i simply reinstalll data2sd somehow or something else that will avoid me having to go through the entire reflash process?
3) If i back up the phone just now, reflash the phone then restore the back up is this likely to bring my problem back from the restore?
All my apps are still there on the card it just seems that data2sd has stopped loading everything now because of battery dying the way it did. This confuses me though as i often drop the thing or just pull the battery straight out if im switching sims and it has never happened before.
EDIT: I've just thought of something else i did before the battery killed the phone. I had downloaded CacheFixer and wiped the cache because i was having trouble with cache space stopping me from downloading something. Thinking about it now im not sure if data2sd or supernova may have had something it relys on stored in the cache?
I just confirmed wiping or moving the cache causes data2sd to become corrupted resulting in having to reinstall the rom. I am still unsure if there is a way to restore your apps after doing this however i doubt it.

Do a nandroid backup, reinstall your ROM, then only restore Data and sd-ext. Try this.
