Question about neo core - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hoping someone here can give me an answer. I installed the new update, and when I check gears and fps2d, it shows about 53 fps. If I run neo core, it only shows 28, anyone have any thoughts?

Really? No one has any ideas about this? I figured some of the developers here might have something to say.

First you answered a question I was going to ask, lol thank you. I was going to ask if with the new OTA is neocore still only showing 30 or less fps, but you answered with your question.
Ok I dont have a definitive answer, I am not that smart with these things. However, from reading these forums I believe my theory to be true. The reason you are able to get 50+ fps with FPS2D is because the screens refresh rate is actually double that of the stock screen. So essentualy you are really not getting 50+ FPS but it appears as though you are. Its a trick, a good one. Neocore must test the FPS in a diffrent way, a better more accurate way. So your phone cant really do 50+ frames persecond but to me and you it looks like it is and thats actually good enough for games and what not. The side effect of the double refresh rate is a shorter screen life. With that said who keeps these smart phones for 10 years anyway. Hopefully someone comes through and explains how Neocore test its FPS as apposed to FPS2D. Its almost as if FPS2D is testing what the screen is doing and Neocore is testing what the GPU is doing.
With that said dont go crying foul this trick methoed is good enough and gets the job done. Thanks dev's for creating a good enough work around. And thanks HTC for finaly making it available to the larger audience.

Neocore and nena mark measure 3d fps. Fps2d and gears measure 2d fps.
Sent from my SUPERSONIC

I don't know why some people say it's a trick. Just look at your screen. Is it not noticeably smother? That's because you ARE getting a higher framerate.

Yeah its noticably diffrent its faster, its twice as fast. But from what I read you arnt gettings twice as many FPS you are actually getting a screen refresh rate that is doubled. So instead of getting twice as many frames you are gettings the same amount of frames just refreshed faster. That sounds like a trick to me .
I mean no disrespect to the dev's and I like the 50+fps I am getting in 2D. I am simply just trying to help understand whats going on.

Why is the HTC Aria "zippier" than the HTC Evo?

The EVO carries some great specs and gets some good benchmark scores through various tests but I always felt that it seemed kind of clunky with just navigating through the OS. 2.2 has helped a bit but I still feel the same way.
I was recently supplied with the HTC Aria through the company I work for. Now I know this phone is a more entry level android set, but I am really blown away with how quick this thing feels. Benchmark scores aren't as high as the evo, but the phone just feels so much faster and more fluid through the OS.
I am not trying to start any sort of flame war. I came from the Nexus One and now have the Evo and Aria. Anyone else notice this?
EDIT: Also I did a camera and video comparison. The picture and video quality is just better on the Aria. Maybe it's just my Evo.

It's the Damn FPS LOCK! My parents have the incredible and that also feels sooo much smoother. Come on HTC give us a factory fix instead of leaving it to the Devs again! They will fix it! But they shouldn't have to!
P.S. we don't call the Android op sys OS 2.2 its not an iphoney....its froyo ....just messn with Ya I couldn't resist
Is that really what makes it feel that way? I didn't know.

100% absolutely.
Very much so yes.
I went from CM6 with a 53 FPS avg to test Fresh 3 with the stock HTC kernel with 29 FPS avg. Night and day difference navigating around the phone. It really is that bad. It's a shame HTC is stonewalling on the situation.
-NO fps lock
That's it... I'm running CM-1 with netarchy fix I think... anyway, it's NIGHT and DAY difference. Do yourself a favor and get a rom/kernel with a fix.
Mine benchmarks just fine now... infact, with Cm6 + Snap kernel, I benchmark a bit better than most snapdragon phones.
30.3 on neocore, HOLLA'.
Its not just the fps lock, it also has alot to do with the graphics accelerator. For one HTC didnt include the proper drivers for the graphics to run at full speed and not only that but it is not an indipendent G.A. it is "intergrated". In other words, if youve ever bought a new graphics card for your computer because most of us nerds know that most comps. bought out there have "intergrated" fx cards. They are built into the motherboard, therefor sucking more energy and resources from all the other parts of the computer. Its the same way with this phone, another thing is the HDMI output. Just like a computer if you want to have a nice vid card and also have a tv tuner or another output you would need to take up 2 slots, well you can only fit so many slots in a phone.
The FPS hack is not the answer lol. Ever heard of placebo.. not the band the effect. I am running CM6 and in linpack getting scores of 39.???. My phone is current and runs smooth. However when it comes to changing screens or anything like that its not any less or any more smoother then when it was set to 30fps. I will say this though games do play smoother and that is definitly noticiable.
These people claiming the FPS unlock makes there phone snappier lol what a joke seriously guys? Dont guess things, read up and learn something. Word of mouth isnt always the correct answer.

not just placebo. Like others have noticed there are Android phones that do not have the fps cap that do run smoother and are equal or less as far as processor and gpu specs go. I have been building pc gaming rigs for the last 8 or so years so I do know the difference not going by word of mouth and also agree with BALeR's post that its not just the fps cap. I didn't mention the gpu in my earlier post because I have used the incredible and it does run smoother loaded up, Not rooted than my evo was stock. Yes might be using different drivers also. The majority of the peeps who use the fps hack can't all be seeing placebo effects. There is some truth to the matter might not be huge but enough non the less for a noticeable difference. Not flaming or saying you are wrong, just defending what I posted.

I would have to disagree. When I first started using netarchy's kernel for my evo it felt like butter
If the FPS unlock is a placebo than so is Chemo for cancer patients.
lol. yeah SERIOUSLY. I've gone back and forth from stock to Netarchy a dozen times, and I can instantly tell which is which.
My girlfriend has an EVO as well. She wasn't convinced either, so we took both phones, stripped our Sense "Scenes" to "Clean Slate", removed battery covers (I have carbon fiber on the back of mine.) and I had to guess who's was whos.
All I had to do was swipe once or twice and I knew which phone was mine vs hers. we did that probably a dozen times and I got it every single time.
I wasn't going off of some blemish or marking that my phone had that hers didn't, it was solely based on a BLANK screen. (default background of course.) and swiping back and forth.
No, but you're right.. it's make believe, like Toothpaste and the female orgasm.

LOL,the nerve of some people..So its a Placebo that I and 100's of other people see a huge difference in the over all "snappyness" of the phone when using a fix?...You can't be serious...placebo,lol....Linpack and CM6 isn't all that's out their sir.Seems like you need some real world experiences with other roms and unlocking FPS before posting.
The Evo running at 30hz is awful, running at around 55hz on CM6 rom (used the T2 hack before), and it is WAY WAY WAY WAY better.

Exactly, it feels so much better. FYI. fps, not hz. two totally different things.
30hz would strain your eyes, possibly and REALLY be annoying.
God imagine that.. 30fpx lock AND 30hz. what a POS that would be.

I can't find actual specs for the screens refresh rate. (excluding the fps cap)
But, I believe the reason we feel so much lag is that the screen is capable of 60hz, which, all LCD screens are now a days. but the cap of 30fps is allowing the screen to refresh 2 times before another frame is drawn, giving us that feeling a lag.
again, this is just my thought on the whole thing as I can't find solid specs of the device, only a bunch of sites that say the 30 fps is a cap on the screens refresh rate. which, ...don't have to be the same thing.

Wholly inaccurate. Netarchy's kernel shows a dramatic improvement in touch response in addition to improved framerate when scrolling. It's not just a placebo and it's borderline irresponsible to say otherwise.

Come back to us when you compare a Stock Nexus One or Incredible and a Stock Evo.
Again, scrolling between screens and apps... one can see a BIG difference.
The 30fps cap puts a TOUCH INPUT LAG. This makes it feel like the phone is lagging behind you. You swipe across the screen and the phone actually registers it around half a second after you.

Looks like someone's a pretty big hypocrite... Twilk, you need to do some reading and learning.
_______________
On top of that, I put the Cm6 Snap Kernel on top of the Cm6-RC1...
I get higher 3d benchmarks. For example...
-16.8 fps on Nenamark (formerly... 10'ish fps)
-30.3 fps on Neocore (formerly 25'ish)
-43 fps on GL Benchmark HD 1.1 (formerly 28'ish)
Install a Custom Rom, Netarchy's latest kernel and then Launcher Pro. You will notice a big difference

FPS question....

Ive tried many roms and many kernels but ive never got anywhere close to 50fps on a quadrant run. my gf's captivate dominates on the fps test and my friends shift does well too. I realize that these phones have better graphic processors and ours was capped (is it still or not) but seeing those makes me really want to break the average 20 fps that im gettings. Just wondering if anyones got theirs close to 50-60fps and if so what rom and kernel is it on. like ive said i have used a ton of different kernels and roms and always have very low fps
The cap is no longer there, but I'm not sure how to achieve a solid 50 fps. I've definitely gotten more than 20, and it has hit 50 before, but not steadily.
That aside, you do realize quadrant scores don't mean much, right?

Smashing the FPS cap like we did on the evo!

Lets just do it. Lets get some dev's stoked on swing what this bad ass best on the earth phone can rip on some benches and do it all in the name of fun since we all love Modding anything and everything. Its why we are all here. How many FPS you think we could rip on quadrent for fun. I bet over a 100fps easy. Antithesis, smart bench. We would destroy all previous standing records ! Its the one thing I have wanted most on this phone from the second I got it. Yes we have a cap of 60 and we don't really need more. But we also don't need 1.6ghz to play a game at the games full potential without it lagging or to face book. Lol but we are do it for fun to play with anyway!
How does oc affect gps? Lol u mean fps right? #autocorrect_fail

there is a 30fps cap when using hdmi, otherwise its 60fps. not fatal but still annoying as our phones usually cap out on the 2d/3d benchmarks at 60

to conserve battery life...for one.
perfect example. the iphone max clock standard is 1ghz, but they have iit underclocked to 800mhz to help with battery. performance doesnt take much of a hit.
on top of that. 60fps is awesome. your eye isnt going to detect anything higher on a 4.5 inch screen. so even if we got it up to 80fps, it would make a difference, but our eyes may not be able to detect it.

Um people love to mod, bottom.line. why did the dev's make our phone clock to 1.6ghz? Its useless except on a benchmark as everything you can imagine runs.smooth at 1.2-1.0ghz. Its just something fun that people would get a kick out of testing.

Fps unlock

Is there a kernel for unlocking the fps on our phone. I have looked and found it for other phones but not ours. Running Calkins with Rogue.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I think it already runs 60 fps and higher if it needs to.
At first I was all like "holy ****, really? You really need more than 60fps?"...the evo4g running at 30fps was one thing--at it sucked. Bad.--but this phone already hauls silky smooth ass.
...but then I got to thinking...a solid 120fps, 80fps, hell, 72fps would make a noticeable improvement to the overall smoothness. Most people might never notice it, but I do....and I don't want to get into it with someone over what I can and can't perceive.
So, I'm curious too. Would it even be possible? Has it not been attempted yet only because it's already "smooth enough"?
The only thing smoother I have ever seen was my NS4G running Netarchy's kernel...I forget how high it got (68fps? 70fps?) but it wasn't much higher, the stdev was reasonably low and I have never used a phone (iPhone included) that was as smooth as my NS4G OC'd to 1400 on Netarchy's kernel.
I saw a OG epic with unlocker running at 68 hertz so fps was around 65. I know it seems like not that much, I just want to get the most out of my phone. Sorry if this sounds like I am whining.
The highest I've personally seen it go was 63 running a quadrant test.
Id be interested in a kernel that could run more than 60fps,but not too much more. I dont want to overstress the devices hardware, but i doubt 72fps would even stress the Epic 4G Touch. Im currently testing the Rogue kernels 1.4.1 and 1.5. Those kernels seem to achieve slightly higher quad scores, but do nothing to change the fps. Not that im complaining about 60fps. Im very impressed with the Epic 4G Touchs performance. Especially when i go back and use my old Evo. Thanks for listening.

so just out of curiosity, why do we relate phone and computer platforms screen refresh rate performance to fps (frames per second)? fps is the same as Hz (hertz), which is cycles per second. I mean we use Hz for televisions, so wy not phone and computer plateforms?

Actually, FPS is only equated to Hz if the application in question waits for vertical sync, locking the FPS to the refresh rate of your screen. This is the reason many games now offer an option of whether to wait for screen refresh or not. If you don't wait, you can easily reach 200+ FPS in applications if you have the right rig.

They messed with it in the OG Epic Samurai kernel. They changed the hertz to get the fps to 72 and while it made the hallway part of quadrant move quicker and smoother it ended up creating lag or chop in certain apps. Most people were asking for it to get scaled back to stock settings. It is probably possible on the Epic Touch but it will take a kernel guru and most likely ALOT of fine tuning

You don't need force gpu.
It does nothing.
Dunno what the guy above is smoking because all it is designed to affect is 2D graphics and even then only for apps not optimized for ICS.
Don't waste the 2 seconds it takes to turn it on.
Did you really need to make two threads about the same thing?

The 2d option clearly increases the quadrant app 3d tests. Its an obvious difference. Without 2d the FPS hits around 25 fps. With 2d enabled the FPS gets pegged at 60 fps. Its easy to test yourself and see.
But yes the 2d option is meaningless for all stock apps and launcher since they are already accelerated.
Btw i find most apps perform worse with 2d enabled so i never use the option. I dont know why people seem to think otherwise.

Quadrant is about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike.
For every day use the force gpu option should be off.
I don't know why people insist on posting crap about benchmarks on xda.
Any dev will tell you they mean nothing.
To the op, do you have problems playing games? Can you notice 20fps without using quadrant?? If not then there is nothing wrong, just use your phone.
but his question wasnt asking "how valid are quadrant scores", but "why is my score so and so".
Besides quadrant has a whole lot of meaning when compared between the same device, ie nexus vs nexus. This myth of "quadrant is meaningless" got taken totally out of context and spread across forums. The original intent was yes a low end crap phone could be super optimized while another high end phone is poorly coded, so a quadrant score between the 2 has no value or bearing on user experience.
But keeping hardware identical, ie nexus vs nexus, quadrant is extremely meaningful. In fact its a great way to compare roms.
I wish this myth would stop and be taken back in its proper context!
Anyway sorry OP i dont know what else it could be.
