[Q] Unrevoked3 and HTC Desire - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
After rooting HTC Desire with unrevoked3, flashing a custom ROM, is it possible to go back to original ROM and will it be possible to get HTC official updates.

Yes. I believe that it's enough to restore nandroid backup (Just to be on a safe side), however, after an OTA update, You WILL lose root, and if that update has fixes for some of the known rooting mechanisms, You could be left with unrooted phone for a while (until someone makes another root )

unrevoked3 works also with last OTA update (32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2)?
There is someone that have tested it?

[Q] rooting & OTA related questions

As I couldn't find anything useful through searching I thought someone here possibly could shed some light on this:
I have Orange PL branded desire (still 2.1) and as we do not have corresponding RUU I am wondering:
1. What changes to the system does unrevoked rooting do (let say I won't do S-OFF)?
Is it possibly to back out those changes manually and if not, why? (I asking since
flashing stock htc rom voids my warranty)
2. I haven't found a definite answer: if I make a nandroid backup of the original 2.1 system
just after rooting it, would it be possible to get later OTA update to froyo? Would it be possible
to download (when it comes) froyo OTA update file and then install it from the SD card over rooted 2.1?

[Q] Help for users who did official 2.2 OTA?

Excuse me for probably asking things that have been asked before, but I have not been active in this forum and I am really inexperienced with both Android and Desire.
I have had an HTC Desire on stock Orange UK ROM since the day the Desire was released. A couple of weeks ago or so, I did the official OTA to 2.2 and everything is fine.
However, I am growing increasingly tired of all the bloatware and crap Orange has installed on the mobile phone, and would do with trying some other non-stock 2.2 ROMs, including Cyanogen ports.
My question is simple:
Do users who have had the 2.2 OTA follow the same procedure as all other users, or do we first have to perform some other steps, such as downgrading to a stock or non-stock 2.1, etc?
Is the root/su process the same for 2.2 users? And finally, is there some 'false-proof'/'fool-proof' recovery image that we can install before we start meddling with our phone (and so that we can possibly restore to it for warranty claims?)
Just follow the guide on here for using unrEVOked 3.21 and you'll hopefully have no issues. Just bare in mind that doing this will mean until an Orange RUU is made available (if at all) you won't be able to send it to Orange under warranty should something go wrong
Can you please elaborate on what you mean by this?
Is there a way to create a NAND dump or some other way to have a back-up of the current image/ROM in the phone so that I can return to it if so desired?

[Q] Gfree S-Off & Reverting to Stock Q

Was wondering if i used a Completely stock Rom/Kernel except the rage method of rooting (clockwork backup) and get update OTA updates will I get in a Loop or brick situation after i've done gfree radio off sim unlock and CID?
Or does gfree stay till i manually remove it from my phone?
EDIT: Also I don't plan on taking s-off or root off just want to use the stock rom and get updates via Tmobile again =X
We can't really answer this, because we don't know what changes T-Mo might make in an OTA in the future.
For example, on the Desire Z, the latest OTA (1.72) doesn't un-do gfree, so that sticks. But maybe a later update will change that, who knows ?
There are unknowns/risks about applying any OTAs/updates if you have root/S-OFF. The phone is intended by HTC/T-Mo *not* to be rooted/S-OFF, so it shouldn't be suprising if they try to come up with new methods to prevent us from doing root/S-OFF and/or undoing it.
Ok thanks for the reply =)

Manual Update of HTC to Gingerbread

HTC has announced they will be releasing a Gingerbread update to the original Desire. My present Desire is currently rooted and S-OFF'ed, so I know I wont get the OTA notification because my phone doesn't match up. But will I be able to download the OTA package and then do a manual update or will that one stop because my phone doesn't match?
Would an Unroot be enough or would I need to restore the Security to its On position again in order to be able to update either way?. And what about the apps I removed, would I have to readd these or what?.
A rooted ROM will be posted in a day, so you will easily just flash that.
If you really want official GB that badly, unroot, and return to stock - then only is it totally safe to use the official update

Agreed, but that would only be a good idea if you plan to stay unrooted!
If you want to run a custom rom, there is no reason to return to stock!
At this moment I dont have any use or desire for a custom rom. All I actually want is get the new GB update from HTC when it comes out. Just not sure I can do that without a lot of hassle considering my phone is presently rooted, has S-OFF and i removed apps.
Unless all the apps will return when I unroot?. But in essence it wont really mattter as my Desire would be laying in a drawer somewhere at that point anyway . When I get my new phone my Desire is getting retired, much the same way my G1 was retired when I got my Desire.

Better way to root?

Hello all, after reading todays news about HTC giving up efforts to update the desire, I have decided to update on my own.
The trouble is, my desire is a POS. I am not able to do the unrevoked way because my desire will just go into a reboot loop.
Is there an alternate way of doing it?
I assume that I must be rooted to get this firmware on?
Do I really need this s-off thing? I do not plan to stay rooted. Once i load the new firmware i will unroot.
Thank.
Ok, firstly POS? Secondly, what firmware?
When your rooted you can't simply just unroot. To unroot you have to flash an RUU, which in turn wipes all the data off your phone and updates everything back to manufacturer stock. I don't see what your trying to achieve here.
I am only rooting to get the new ruu. So, I assume that it will then be unrooted no?
POS is piece of sh..
I have the stock 2.2 fm.
You don't need to root to use an RUU. You can happily flash an RUU all day. The current RUU is Android 2.2, software number 2.49.405.5.
