My question is if I flash a rom and say it has superuser or rom manager. Will that app update like regulare apps I download from the market or is that something I would have to manually update because the market doesnt realy know its there?
I know if I download an app when an update comes out it promps me to update and so forth but when the app is already on the phone from the start what about then?
I am looking for legit answers here no speculations. I have already been speculating since I started flashing roms. The answers seems to be no, especialy since the new gmail app is out and I havnt been prompted to update.
Thanks, Thomas
A lot of the time you can just download them from the market and it will be linked from then on. Sometimes it won't install cuz the app is recognized as a system app. In that case you have a couple options I know of. If you have Titanium, you can either use Market Doctor to re-link the app to the market or if that doesn't work you can remove it with Titanium and just reinstall through the market. Root explorer or ADB are other options for removing system apps. Check in Settings/Applications to see if it will let you uninstall the app. If not, its a system app. Kind of all depends on how the dev put the rom together. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info
Now, if an app is already installed with the rom will it update from the market or do we have to manually update it?

Hey everyone.
Is there anything that needs to be done on the phone side to get the new gmail app from the market. I am running SR 3.0 RC3. The app will download but when it tries to install it says Install Unsuccessful.
Any Ideas,
Mark
try removing your current gmail apk from your system/app folder, then install.
Download titanium backup, uninstall your existing gmail app, reboot your device then download the new gmail from the market.
If you are running the sense version, there is a SR 3.2 RC3 update in rom manager that you can flash over your current install and updates the gmail. This is also detailed in the skyraider thread. I'd search the skyraider threads before starting new ones because if you have a question, it's likely somebody has already asked it.
the file in ROM manager says 'corrupt zip file'
I also tried uninstalling from Titanium and installing from the market, neither of them worked.
For anyone who is using the new gmail app is it any good? worth going through the minor trouble? Thanks

yes its worth it. to me the pictures load instantly, that alone is worthwhile. it annoyed me to have to wait and sometimes double tapp the pic. just do what athenslb57 said 3 posts up its way quicker and so easy a kid could do it.
So being the impatient soul I am, right after I got permanent root, I decided to jump into Titanium Backup and deleted some of the bloatware. I was so impatient, that I totally forgot to backup the system apps I deleted to a backup folder on my SDcard, so now those apks are gone. My question is now, if an OTA becomes available, am I going to have problems again, just like with Paul's Goggles app?
If so, what do you suggest I do? I am guessing now that now root has been achieved, we can install those apps to the system just fine again. Can someone upload these apks for these system apps, so I just feel on the safe side and I have backups? I would greatly appreciate it...

Of course, if you don't see this as being a problem for the future, please tell me. It would make me feel a lot more secure about things. Thanks!
it shouldnt be a problem, you can re download those in the market
Goddamn it. Now I went to uninstall Email.apk to replace it with an old one that doesn't require remote security, but it keeps giving me an "Application not installed" error, even with the backup of the original.
How do I get it to install?!

You don't install system apps, you just move then into /system/app/
its likely if an OTA becomes available a dev will mod it to be flashable to rooted and modified /system/ devices
i would love to know how to get rid of the annoying [email protected]!*& adds

Okay, I feel much better now. Time to play around with this thing! So excited!
Yea if an ota comes out, it will be modded to update the system and skip files not found, if there is a patch.
So your good. I'm just waiting for custom recovery with nandbackup before I start messing n the system. I just hate setting up the phone all over after
And if all else fails you can fastboot flash system.img from the orig pc10img. Wiping all your data and formating ur system. Then updating to ota.

Curious to know this as well.
curious to know
Just use Titanium Backup to uninstall any apps you want. Long click on the app, and an uninstall option will be there.

So I have the old (free) version of Shazam and I don't want to update it. Is there a way to remove it from my Market "Downloads" so that I don't keep getting notified that there's an update available and I don't accidentally update it?
Would moving it to /system/app do the trick, or would that cause some trouble?

download app monster from the market go into your app monster app there is listed all your apps. from there you can back up the app to your sdcard then uninstall it. once that is done find it again in your app monster app and reinstall there will not be a link to the market anymore all set
This was a big problem for me, and I wasted many many hours trying to solve the problem of the android market, that didn't donwload, update or install anytnhig.
But i found the solution in a forum and my market is working fine now
Epsilonbass from droid forums.net:
"Connect your phone to your computer, set in usb mass storage mode. Look for a hidden folder called ".android_secure" and then delete the file "smdl2tmp1.asec". Unmount and you should be good to go."
And all is working
I don't have smdl2tmp1.asec in that folder
Are you referring to the problem of random things being considered "not compatible" for your phone?
Yeah if you are talking new market (version 3.x) the problems go deeper than that.
Custom dpi (lcd density) causes the incompatible problem.
I went back to market 2.3.6

You don't understand how much I have tested to try to find the reason behind it. I was going to test that tomorrow morning. It's always the last thing.
Is there a way to force the app to download regardless of screen density? My Desire is showing more and more apps as incompatible because I use a density of 200 instead of 240... don't really feel like changing back just for an app install or two.
i solved this problem by clearing data , cache , uninstalling update of Market and rebooting my phone
Thankfully I have a backup of 2.3.6, which appears to be the last version that is even remotely usable.
I regularly have to restore 2.3.6 in order to update an app. Of course after a while the Market updates itself to the latest 3.x version (thanks for that). Usually things work for a while after this update, but eventually there will be an app update that either can't be installed (no install option) or that is flagged as not being available in my country (even though it's already installed. So I have to restore 2.3.6 again and the cycle continues...
I use the default LCD density and clearing the Market cache and data doesn't help.
Bottom line, Market 3.x is just plain buggy.
Google is really messing up with this.

If you use titanium backup you can freeze "market updater" to put an end to that.

Does that just prevent the Market from being updated or does it also stop apps from being updated? I'm assuming it's only the Market. Anyway I'll try it and see what happens, thanks.

No such file, either with computer, or terminal app, or rooted explorer.
But I've finally managed to get rid of this bug, deleting Market data with Titanium Backup, as I could only delete cache in Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All Applications > Android Market (which was not enough).
My friend was getting "purchase canceled" error for free apps on Archos honeycomb tablet.
Market version was 1.x but looked like no market I have ever seen. We installed the 3.1.5 from my thunderbolt over his tablet version, and now he can download again.
With the new market not able to update or download new applications.
Wiping market data only tempararily allows downloads.
Marker 2.3.6 is only working.
To prevent auto update, delet or rename marketupdater.apk
It solved my problem.
But, why can't we use the new version?
I flashed my ion with the latest at&t ICS then root it with bin4ry's method. It installed the superuser and I can uninstalled apps using the flashtool but when I try to uninstall through the phone I can't (tried it with apps then going to app I want to uninstall, instead of uninstall I only get disable). Am I missing a setting? I remembered when I flashed my phone with the international ICS I can simply uninstall all the apps I want.
Thanks in advance and thank you for all the guides and other things that makes this phone fun to use.
Actually even with international firmware there are some apps you can't uninstall through the settings -> apps menu. For those apps use something like root explorer and remove the apk manually in the system/apps folder. That removes it from your phone.

If you are trying to uninstall system or certain preloaded apps you need to use ti-backup from market. The /settings/apps program will only uninstall user apps not system apps

Uninstall Almost Any System App
Have you ever wanted to remove a system app?
To remove a system app you need to have:
1.Rooted Phone
2.Root Explorer(ex.ES File Explorer)
3.Custom Recovery(or ability to reset dalvik and cache)
4.Apps to Remove!
Let´s get started!
0.Make a backup of your phone just in case.
1. Remove the App´s data.Go to Settings/Apps/All/ and select the app. Then Clear Data and Cache.
2.Navigate with root explorer to /System/App/
3.Select the app that you want to delete and delete it!
4.Then Clear Dalvik and Cache(This will remove the app from the apps list)
5.And Voila! You removed a system app!

thanks for all the answers.
Do you guys know how to get rid of the "yp local search" from contacts? Also sometimes when I go to my contacts, it tries to retrieve an at&t address book.
Promise this is the last question. Thanks again
As Spec mentioned go to /system/app delete whatever you want by using root explorer or something similar

I have uninstalled all att apps and still have that in contacts. Now when I click it contacts force close. Might be built into att contacts apk. Maybe try the one from generic international
