OTA update - myTouch 3G Slide Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried searching and couldn't find an answer that is satisfying. I rooted over a month ago, but i never received the OTA that everyone was prompted to get. Do I have to unroot to be eligible. I don't mind if the OTA overrides my root access, I just don't use it that much. Do I have to call tmobile and have them push it to my handset?

just go flash the CR_OTA rom.

Newbie with a question

If you rooted your phone and kept the stock ROM is it possible to receive OTA's? Lost and just want to find out if I need to unroot my phone to receive any OTA's

If you receive ota you lose root.

Don't take any OTA without checking these forums first. Like gqstatus0685
said you can lose root.
When an update comes out check the forums for the modified "root friendly" version. Usually it will hit before the official or shortly after. Should be able to just flash it to update.

[Q] Turn off OTA notification? Possible?

hi. i perma-rooted my phone and then got the OTA update. since im not sure whether i want to do the OTA (people reported their phone being sluggish afterwards) i would like it to stop bugging me about updating. is there a way to do it? i have looked everywhere on the phone, but couldn't find a setting for that.
thnx in advance.
also, if i do decide to do the OTA, would i have to re-root the phone?
thx
I'm a bit torn on this as well. Just recently rooted my phone before getting the announcement on my phone that the update is available. However, after actually trying it, it stops at the very beginning and Clockworks is telling me that some signature couldn't be validated and it interrupted the installation of the update.
No harm came to my phone and it's still in the same state as it was before attempting to apply the OTA update.
Would I need to do the round-about way by downloading and installing it another method?
I'm interested in this as well. I have a second G2 arriving for a family friend. Its totally unlocked so I will most likely apply the update and then root the phone. Is it the consensus opinion that future updates after flashing with clockwork will just fail at some signature validation after rooting and S=OFF? I'm curious about future updates from HTC/Tmo and how this will work as well. I'm also assuming that applying the existing OTA and then rooting is the best way to go.
BTW, I'm truly enjoying this phone now. Thanks to the general, themes/apps, and QA forums sections!
Just to update, I went ahead and applied the OTA update. The only reason why mine couldn't update properly is because I had uninstalled Google Goggles, as it runs an app check. You WILL lose your root but still have S-OFF. I followed this guide step-by-step and I was able to get root again. As far as it being sluggish, there's no performance loss.

[Q] Rooted but still asking for update

I got my Incredible yesterday. As soon as I started it up it asked to install a system update. I declined because I wanted to root. I rooted last night with revoked3 and flashed unrevoked forever. Have not installed a custom ROM yet, didn't have time to pick one.
My phone continues to ask me to install the OTA update. I have 3 questions:
1. Will installing it affect root?
2. If I lose root when I install it can I get root back?
3. How do I get it to stop asking me to install it?
Ok I know two of these answers
If you accept it you will lose root. I believe if you run unrevoked forever you cab reroot though.(not 100% on this so I'd say don't do it.) To get rid of it you can change some number with root explorer but I'm not exactly sure how to since I'm on my phone and can't link it
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
ok, thanks...maybe someone else knows what to change? It hasn't asked in a couple of hours, maybe it went away lol

[Q] Haven't yet rooted - safe to accept latest system update?

I just got my Sprint GN yesterday. After activation it immediately began prompting me to install a system update. I'm assuming it's the FD02 update.
Will installing this update break my ability to unlock & root with all of the current unlock/root methods?
I'm coming from an OG EVO where I once made the mistake (seems like eons ago) of accepting an update and then having to wait months for a new root method to be discovered.
I was dumb to get this phone during finals week as I won't have time to unlock/root until some time next week. The install prompts are getting really annoying though. Thoughts? Ideas?
No. The update does nothing to mess with unlocking or rooting. You can still unlock with "fastboot oem unlock" and root with CWM and pushing the binaries manually.
Thank you! Now I can study in peace. :-(

[Q] Will the new Tmobile software update affect my rooted SGH-T989

Yesterday I received a message from Tmobile that there is a new software update for my phone. I was at work and did not want to bother with it so I tried to say not to the update and the only option is to postpone for a maximum of 1 day. To get out of the message I selected the home key. I keep getting the reminder every 4 hours and the message will not go away from notifications drop down screen.
Tmobile seems very eager to push this update out, I rooted my phone about a month ago so I could use the tethering feature when I'm on call without the extra expense, also used Titanium to freeze the bloatware apps as well. Will this software update affect or undo my root access? Does anyone know if the update is good or bad?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Yes you will lose root but it can be rooted easily using the same method. This question has been answered over and over try searching a bit.

Thank you for the information I did see threads on the subject but they were on older software updates.I did not run across one that talked about this latest update, I did not know if there was something different or if the the new update made it difficult to re-root. Some updates may only be beneficial to Tmobile and not the end user. Does anyone have the specifics on the update? Pros and Cons?
I'd like to know if the update is worth it as well.
My phone is currently rooted but I was not the one who did it so I'm afraid to lose root because I wouldn't know how to re-root it.
Is there a way to update without losing root?
I went ahead and updated my phone and it did not undo root. It is a software update that will allow u to upgrade to ICS.

You sure about that? If updating to the UVLDE 2.3.6 GB via OTA, I am pretty sure you lost root. You probably still have the super user app installed, but that in and of itself does not ensure root. Try using a app that requires root access such as Titanium Backup.
