I just rooted my EVO the other day and so far I really like it i would like to tinker with it more by adding roms and kernels but I don't know how to do it I would like to speed up my phone and remove any lag if possible if anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it by the way I have the EVO
There are videos available that show how to do this step by step. You can google "how to flash custom rom evo" and you'll find the results.
Quick summary:
Download the ROM you want and copy to SD card
Nandroid backup through your recovery image
Wipe Data and Dalvik Cache in recovery image
Flash/Install Custom ROM through recovery image
Thanks imma have to check out the videos because I have no idea how to do any of that stuff other then putting it on my SD card lol
I have a friend that has the new galaxy s phone from t-mobile and he told me he has his overclocked at over 2100 do you know of any Rom for the EVO to do that the most I seen gives it about 1250

I don't know how accurate that 2100 number is as I don't know anything about that phone, but that number sounds extremely exaggerated. To overclock the Evo that number, you would be asking the processor to more than double it's rated workload, and it would make the phone very unstable, at best. I've never gone higher than 1190 on mine, and I actually got lower quandrant scores on 1190 than I did at 1152.
I used unrevoked to root my phone and I am curious to know if my nand is lock or unlock is there a way to tell
Ok so I had to jump in on this . The itch to root is getting to much and I know Im gonna do it before to long . The only concerns I have with the process is as follows .
1. I understand that the Unrevoked 3.21 roots the phone and installs a recovery. This recovery creates a "Restore point" of how the phone sits currently ? So if I flashed a rom I didnt like I could essentially restore the phone back to 2.2 with all radio updates and so forth that are included as its sits right ?
2. I have read a thread on Xda about unrooting the phone if you choose to do so . Does Unrevoked 3.21 provide that option ? Or is it gonna be a stand alone process ?
I guess out of all the questions I have 1. is the most important for me . The recovery puts the image (if it makes a restore point) on your SD card or does it put it on your computer ? I guess getting to the real point . If I stick my butt out there and get lost(flashing roms and kernels) I always got the magic button to bring me home . LOL

Hold volume down while you power your phone up. It will boot into the bootloader and you can tell from there. Look at the very top line if text. If it says S-OFF then you are nand unlocked.

A custom recovery like RA or Clockwork allows you to create full system backups called nandroids that will revert your phone back to the exact state it was in when you made the backup. This is not an automatic process, you need to initiate it manually. I make a nandroid backup before I do ANYTHING to the phone, including but not limited to flashing kernels and ROMs. It puts the nandroid on your SD card, but I always copy them to my computer and organize them based on ROM and date. When you want to do a restore, just put it back on your SD card and run the restore from recovery. It needs to be in the nandroid folder for recovery to recognize it.

It is a standalone process. If you used Unrevoked forever you need to use their S-ON tool and then run a stock RUU or flash a stock PC36IMG file. It's not a native function of any of the root methods.

Once you get the hang of everything, you're going to be very glad that you decided to root. It really opens up a whole new world and experience. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me, I'm always happy to help.
Well its offical , I am now part of the rooted clan . First Android phone and first time rooting . Thanks unrevoked for a painless route (I will be donating as soon as I get my next paycheck) , Thanks MetalHead for answering the few questions more or less holding me back . I started out with Bakedsnack 1.7 and flashed that . From what I read I wiped everything twice (might be overkill but rather be safe then sorry) . When smooth as butter . Also did the backup prior to flashing anything . Everything is saved on the harddrive and even a cd backup (Yeah I like having my bases covered) LOL . Other than that this phone is a completely different creature with baked snack (thanks for the software awesome work) . Also thanks to everyone that posts on the forums , alot of info to wade through but well worth it . My advice to anyone rooting for the first time . Read , read , read , reread again , watch videos and plan ahead . It might not go well . Something might screw up but if you plan ahead your good to go . (Starts up GIJOE theme song) LOL
out of curiousity how customizable is the stock rom ima little gunshy when it comes to flashing custom roms lol

What is it you want to do to your phone? With a rooted stock ROM you can still delete all the pre-loaded bloatware, flash a custom kernel (A MUST!) and you can change the look with different launchers. Don't be afraid to flash a custom ROM though, it is by no means a difficult task.
Got another two questions .
1. I have Baked Snack rom and kernel right now . If I expierence an issue with this I can just flash the baked Snack zip from the SD card (after I do a data / cach wipe) and this will more or less be a "restore" for Baked Snack ?
2.If I want to restore back to Froyo 2.2 rooted. I just go into bootloader and select recovery and it will pull the backed up version I stored on the sd card before I flashed Baked Snack , correct ?
Im sure I will think of other questions as I get deeper into rooting LOL
Hello all. So I've been reading your thread and I am rooted (using one of the nightly builds of unrevoked 3) I have S-Off, Clockworkmod 2.5.0.1. Here is my problem, using RomManager Prem, I cannot install CM6 for the life of me! I've wiped, did a nandroid..etc. Is this not the most effective way to flash a rom?
Thanks in advance!

Yeah, I've had to do that more than once. For serious issues, it can't hurt to do a full wipe, reflash the ROM and then restore with Titanium.

If you're talking about a nandroid backup, then yes, that's one way to do it. What I would do is restore your nandroid, wipe data, restore with Titanium Backup. You probably don't need to wipe, but it can never hurt.

Do you have the ENG HBOOT? It is my understanding that CM6 requires you to have it. If you rooted with Unrevoked, then chances are this is your problem. Here's a link to a thread that will help you.

As for Baked Snack , When I first flashed it battery life was "eh" . After setting up the phone the way I had mine previously and ran the profile update . Shut down charge to full and fired it back up . Battery life was much better over stock . Granted I don't push my phone hard so your mileage might vary . I feel this phone gets most of its battery life when its idle . In stock form the battery would still drain during idle , this is after every app had been pulled and just running 3G and GPS . Same setup on Baked Snack showed better life during idle . To be honest it feels faster then stock form so you might find yourself messing with the phone alot more then normal at first . So give it time and battery life will level out for ya .

Ok no help? Not even some direction for irc where I can get some real help? Well just flashed a diff kernel thanks for the help guys. The Droid community has been a very unhelpful one compared to iPhone....

I appreciate the help) second I've ran into more pretentious ppl in these forums for Android then others no offense to the good guys but just my exp. It was brash to say that in this post tho. Thank you guys again for the ones willing.
That's because even the biggest idiot can work an iphone.

Patience dude. I didn't catch it, but what exact kernel are you using, net has a lot of em, the one in the OP of myn's thread you mean? What recovery(and version of that recovery, some versions of clockwork floating around that have some bugs i think) did you use to flash the rom? what radio version and pri version do you currently have installed? Which ROM were you coming from, and did you do a full wipe(data, cache, davlik cache) before flashing it? I have never experienced anything like you are describing whilst using Myn's, his ROMs have been solid. Give a little more info and surely we can help you get running smoothly again.
thanks for the reply heres the details...myn's rls5, net toast havs more, ra_superson
Sincerely thanks for your reply. Typing this on my evo as my screen tears on and off. Running ra_supersonic(newest ver.) With Myns rls5 on net havs more smartass as listed on page. Updated to current radio and pri as listed on his post. Only dalvik and cache wiped not data. Flashed
Hulu and data governor hacks...CPU is only overlooked to 1190 in smartass and can't go any higher. This was my first root and flash so came from stock 2.2 on 3.30 ver. Have noticed avg using temp is around 103 off charger, cameras broke, my CPU in system panel says I'm running 100% continuously. Did a fast reboot , norm reboot, and still doin it. I had diminished battery life from the get go, I understand battery life per clockspeed relation but have underclocked profile to try to assist, which only cause frustration when coming back from lock screen and its still tryin to switch profile. Lagged the phone nearly locked out several times cuz it couldn't keep up with my fingers.0003 hw....I think that's it. Thank you again
Looks like we're running nearly the same setup, minus my ra_supersonic 2.2.1 recovery. I have attempted the stock kernel furnished in the Rom zip but since it didn't offer overclock I switched to net havs more smartass. I do the dalvik and cache wipe each time.

Not trying to be a smart ass but do you realize that by insulting us will not get you any help? Rhetorical question
From reading what you jus stated the obvious problem is you did not do a FULL WIPE as you should do when flashing between roms.
Also next time please be patient as those like myself who browse through this section to help impatient ppl like your self, do actually have a life outside of xda. Its been a big snow storm in the southeast so most like myself included are outside enjoying the snow!

Sorry you feel that way but since i have had the hero, on every thread about a rom says wipe all! This must be a joke for someone as rude as yourself to come on here and disrespect those who are trying to help.
Next time you decide to flash a rom remember to do a full wipe because inside the data partition is files for the particular rom, if you dont wipe, the new files will just over lay but not delete the old one. This will cause conflicting issues within the files as the phone tries to do both at the same time.
Screen tearing and the "jigglies" as I like to call it have always come from kernels - in my experience. And just because someone might have the same set up as you, the way it affects your phone ccan be quite different as you are running different apps, different settings, etc.
First thing I would do if I were you is to freeze any kernel govenor you are using - no setcpu, no secreen off profile, no set on boot, no os monitor govenor, no nothing like that. You don't want want any of that going on when you flash a new rom or kernel.
I know you don't want to do a full data wipe so let's see if we cna get you going without that. I used to HATE doing data wipes, I don't mind so much now because I've learned that trobule shooting can frequently take longer than just doing a data wipe.
I would say #1 make sure you are using AMON RA. Power button-reboot-recovery. Wipe cache at least twice, wipe dalvik at least twice. Now JUST flash the rom (you've already said your radios are updated so you wont have a problem with this). Let the phone boot up and give it time to settle in. You wont have any screan tearing. Now you're running a completely stock Myn's rls5 rom. Check some stuff out, make sure your basic settings are good, make sure your 4g is not scanning, etc.
Make a nandroid of this and keep it.
Now start making changes if you'd like. Flash a different font, flash a different kernel, etc. But leave all the governors OFF until you have a kernel that you KNOW will run ok on your phone. For example - I can run 2 of ziggy's kernels but the others don't work for me. I can run a few of net's kernels, but many don't work for me.
So my basic suggestion is to make sure you get a stable, stock Myn's rls5 on your phone before you mod it. If you can't get that, then yes - you might want to wipe data. Doing a batch backup in Titanium is really easy and it makes restoring very easy as well. It's our own customizing that is time consuming because we are all probably very picky (and proud!) of our beautiful phones.
Thanks for the helpful info from ALL that posted. I understand the risk of the non entire wipe, nandroid is safe of original stock Rom but not of new one. After tinkering with setcpu I've gotten more consistent stability. I know I will reflash with an entire data wipe here soon to see results. Running ra_supersonic 2.2.1 recovery.
I've made list of check point when I test some new Roms and kernels. I have some more question on backing up user info from backed up apps but Im sure ill find it on here.
Now that my system is stable for the time being, some one mind help me setup irc? And also has anyone issues with camera breaking with this Rom or kernel? I should wait to wipe entirely to see if it fixes, but I'd rather not waste my time with this Rom or kernel if the camera won't work. Love everything else about this Rom, need to learn more about the kernel to praise it. Ra_supersonic 2.2.1 recovery i like also.

You're welcome. I am late at getting back to this post, but yea. Definitely. As everyone else has suggested, you have to do a full wipe when changing ROMS. Only time you could get away with just wiping davlik cache and cache is when upgrading the same rom ( like from rls 3 to rls 4, and rls to rls 5), but even then, it doesn't always work. Full wipe is always recommended. I would also recommend downloading your apps one at a time from the market, and adding your mods one at a time, make sure everything is stable after each flash. Good luck.

If your phone is the newer hardware (late 003 or 004), you can only use the stock kernel, or a kernel based off stock for the camera to work. That would be htc #15. I believe Net's 4.3 kernels are based off of that. I am also pretty sure that Net explains that in his kernel thread in the development section.
Thanks guys did the full wipe and reflashed, working ok except SD file permissions are screwed up now. I go to test camera and it says insufficient file permissions when I take a pic. I go to check in astro, I see all the file that are supposed to be there but no editing; it still shows rw. Did not have card in when full wipe was completed would that effect it? Any help? Haven't attempted another SD card. I hope this isn't the second SD card to be trashed during my rooting process. Atleast I can still see that there r files on there. Thanks for the help.

Okay, this process will 100% work. It's the one I've been using since my lowly mytouch slide oh so many months ago.
*before you do this, make sure you have backups of your nandroid and your rsa keys. I'll edit post and give you links on how to back up your rsa keys*
RSA Key back-up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887900 ...since you're rooted you can go straight to the part where it says "if you're rooted do this.."
1. First you need to fix the sd card. Create a folder on your computer desktop and call it "my sd card". Plug your phone into the computer and select "disk drive". Next you're going to copy EVERYTHING from the sd card and place it in the folder on the desktop (and dude I mean everything! AS IS, DON'T CHANGE ANY NAMES). Then, you're going to unhook your phone, go to settings>sd and phone storage. Then you're going to format your sd card. Yes, do it, but make sure you have EVERYTHING backed up first. After that's done, plug your phone back in, select disk drive and copy everything from your "my sd card" folder on your computer and put it back onto your sd card.
*phew*
Okay now that the sd problem is fixed, here's how you fix the rest. You see, when you upgrade your PRI to 1.90 and your radio, etc etc you gotta update the kernel to a version that's 1.90 supported. I'll edit post and post a link to where you can find one OR you can just use the kernel that's included with myn's rom because it WILL WORK. *edit* the kernel I'm using has been taken down because of the witch hunt against SBC kernels. So for now, just stick with stock. It works just fine.
Anyway.
Steps to getting myn working perfectly.
*before starting, re-download myn rls5 in case the screen flickering was caused by a corrupted download*
1. Download Titanium Back-up from the market. Back up all the apps you want to keep (basically, anything you downloaded from the market as you'll get facebook, sense widgets, etc back). You can do this while you re-download the rom.
2. Make a nandroid back-up in case something goes seriously wrong. A rom that flickers your screen is better than a brick.
3. Once that back-up is done, reboot into recovery. Once there, you're going to WIPE EVERYTHING. Full data, cache and dalvik wipe. Yes, do it. There is no other option.
3. Flash myn's rom. Let it go all the way through. Do NOT flash a new kernel until you've found one that's 3.70 compatible and works with PRI 1.90. Myn rls5 is designed to work with the newest updates (which means a #15 kernel, like the one that came stock).
4. Reboot. If the screen is still flickering, then at this point it's a hardware problem. Flash back to stock, unroot and go get a new one. If it works fine, re-download titanium back-up from the market and restore all your apps. From there it's just putting your widgets back on your home screen.
From here, you can search the forums for a kernel that works with the newest updates. If you read them, they'll tell you what they're compatible with. Remember do NOT use an AOSP kernel with a SENSE rom, that's just spells IDIOCY. Until you find a kernel that works, stick with the one that came with the rom because everyone knows that one works.
I hope this helps. As for the IRC chat, not all the experts are on all the time. If no one is online that can help when you get one, try getting a few hours earlier or a few hours later.
Ok, basically I discovered cyanogen 7 about a week ago and was pure ''
well since then I have gone from knowing nothing at all to having a rooted 2.2 (stock rom) GSM desire (A8181 - whatever that actually means), S -ON
I rooted with unrevoked and have clockworkmod 2.something.
now from what i understand I need to S -OFF so that I can use a program (run on the phone from ROM manager) to upgrade clockwork to 3.x then (correct me if i'm wrong, I'm a total noob dont forget xD) I can use ROM manager to download CM7 and instal all on the phone?
is that right? if not could someone please correct me
I've done a NANDroid backup
i think thats all i want to say :')
I get confused when browsing forums because people talk about things, especially abbreviations, that mean nothing to me xD
Thanks for the help guys

well since then I have gone from knowing nothing at all to having a rooted 2.2 (stock rom) GSM desire (A8181 - whatever that actually means), S -ON
I rooted with unrevoked and have clockworkmod 2.something.
now from what i understand I need to S -OFF so that I can use a program (run on the phone from ROM manager) to upgrade clockwork to 3.x then (correct me if i'm wrong, I'm a total noob dont forget xD) I can use ROM manager to download CM7 and instal all on the phone?
is that right? if not could someone please correct me
I've done a NANDroid backup
i think thats all i want to say :')
I get confused when browsing forums because people talk about things, especially abbreviations, that mean nothing to me xD
Thanks for the help guys

not an expert on the S-OFF side of things but ive been flashing various ROMS without ever needing to S-OFF.
Been using LeeDroid and now GingerVillain (and tried a few more along the way).
For info the GingerVillain has CM7 stuff in it and is pretty stable. Once you have flashed GingerVillain once it has its own setup for flashing updates/patches etc.
But you are right to always take a nandroid backup first. the one time i forgot my flash screwed up

That's sound advice because I'm not set on cyanogen however I don't know how I'd go about flashing GingerVillain :')
And how sure are you it's alright with S-ON because I don't like the sound of a £250 paperweight
thanks though
well ive never changed my S status .....
Download ROM Manager from the Market. Make sure you install clockworkmod recovery (using ROM Manager). Backup current ROM (using ROM Manager). Download GingerVillain latest version. Flash ROM from SD card (using ROM Manager)
Any future updates to GingerVillain you can use the 'Villain Setup' utility that you will find in your app list once the Flash is complete.
If its your first ever flash be aware that you should make sure the battery level is high, and that it may take several minutes (so dont panic !)
As long as you backup first everything should be fine (although there is always some risk).
Once you have finished your first Flash it will seem like you were worried about nothing
Oh ... and if you would prefer to stay with Froyo the LeeDroid ROM has a very good A2SD version
that sounds.... easy
thanks
and ROM manager says i already have CwM 2.5.0.7 -- so thats all cool, yeah?
Will my NANDroid backup count or shall I just do it again in ROM manager?
and I'm guessing I can download GV from within ROM manager?
sorry to ask all the newb questions but i'd rather be sure lol
Ive never bothered downloading ROMs from within ROM Manager but I believe you can.
As for the backup Id copy your existing backup to your PC and do another. You can never have too many backups
The backup will be in a sub folder on your SD card in a 'clockworkmod' directory.
oh ... and it generally is easy its just summing up courage for the first one.
Might be worth using titanium backup or my backup pro to take a copy of your apps if you dont want to lose where you have got to on Angry Birds etc
you can then restore them to your new ROM
Thanks
my phone is off to charge quicker at the minute then i'll give it a shot
one last question to be extra annoying
if i can't download GV within ROM man.
..could you provide a download link for me to manually slap in on my SD please
Seriously though, I'm really grateful!
They are all under the Desire Android dev sub forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880465
FINALLY about to do it and I've just thought..
Im on clockwork 2.x
don't i need 3.x for ext4 which makes gingerbread more stable?
also, ROM manager didn't have GV so i downloaded the zip from the link you gave me and extracted it to the root of my SD
rom manager doesnt find the image file, only the 3 folders
..and i feel really stupid :')
[edit 5 mins later]
NOT unzipping it was a better idea, its working now
...my excuse is that im learning
Good thing it worked for you. Some users have reported a host of problems flashing ROMs from ROM Manager. I'd advice you to do it the tried-and-tested old way: through Recovery (which in your case is ClockworkMod).
If you decide to repartition, ROM Manager can do that too, but that's not too advisable either, as some have reported problems with that method, and ROM Manager only allows up to 512Mb partitions, if I remember right.
funny that ^
ROM manager ended up leaving me on the white screen with the green HTC logo untill i pulled the battery
i did it through recovery and it worked a charm
just went through ALL of the settings and i LOVE it
there are a few things i dont like but i'm yet to try different themes etc yet
I'm a happy bunny!
Glad you managed the Flash OK
Never experienced any problems with ROM Manager myself ....
Thing is, now you have recovery and a nadroid backup you are fairly safe. Anything goes wrong you can recover to a previous image from recovery
I always keep a nadroid on my SD card just in case
Of course if you try S-OFF and all sorts of HBOOT changes then you expose yourself to more risk apparently so be careful.
Happy Flashing
oh ... and if you are on GingerVillain go to the Villain Setup and flash the adfree add on. For me it always takes 2 attempts to work, which is strange, but adfree is great
and on GingerVillain you also might want to flash the 'new market' add-on too ...
.... and then there are the Kernels to try too
A week from now you will wonder what you were worried about and will be flashing daily

I'm already wondering it
I though last night (well, 4.20 this morning) that I might bite the bullet and try flashing cyanogen
-which i did with sucess
then downloaded the google add on pack and added that
I felt all happy like
onr of my friends did his hero at the same time too because he was interested when i showed him
I think for now I'll keep cyanogen, but i've left it in note form: no homescreens properly set up, very few apps etc, until i find a ROM that I really like the look of
I'll keep ginger in mind though, especially as i hadn't tried the stuff you mentioned above
Hi there,
Saw the thread and thought i could help you with some information.
S-ON/OFF refers to Signature Verification on or off. S-ON stops things that the phone manufactuer do not want changed. It is totally separate to Root access to android. The main advantage of turning S-OFF is that you can change the size of the partitions on the device to give you more space for you apps. Basically playing around here can be dangerous if you are not aware of what it's actually doing at all times.
The great news is that as you have already discovered, you definately don't need to play with S-OFF to flash ROMs. Just root access and a recovery. The ClockworkMod 2.0.5.7 that comes with the Unrevoked root method should is fine for flashing all ROMs from ROM manager or by booting into recovery. But if any of your ROM instructions call for later versions you can just store the later version zip on your SD and use the older recovery to flash the newer version. It will be usable until your phone re-boots. You can't flash the image of the new recovery without S-OFF
Glad to have you experimenting in the community. I think this sort of stuff is exactly why Android is excellent. Apple hate that people Jailbreak their phones but Google openly encourage this development!
Thanks Jimmy
I flashed GV again (because i'm getting a bit carried away now ;D) and tried to install new market, adfree and a 3d desire bootlogo. I've got debugging and unknown apps enabled but it says there is a problem downloading?
Any idea why?
hmmmm.... not seen that one. Have you tried wifi and 3G ? whats the exact message ?
Did you wipe between flashes ? you dont normally need to do this when flashing updates (eg gingervillain 2.0 to 2.1) but when flashing between different ROMs (eg CM to GV) then you should do a full wipe ....

Great summary! I definitely recommend s-off as I found it as easy as root.
I have close to 300mb free on internal and usually over 200mb free ram.
You can also change the HTC quietly brilliant (should be "loudly" if you ask me!) splash screen after s-off, and write to any of your device partitions, including /system and /data while booted, saving some time using advanced for certain tasks.

Is that just the market message telling you there is a problem downloading?
My best guess is that there is a setting in GV that allows direct install to the SD-ext partition for apps. Do you have an EXT2/3/4 partition on your SD card?
When ROMs talk about A2SD, Data2EXT and Data2SD the EXT partition is required.
have a look at the blog for the Starburst ROM for desire for a great tutorial (can't post an external link in here)
It is for a specific ROM but the process is the same. I would recommend using EXT3 because it is the most compatible with ROMS.
See how you go with that.
Ok so I have been rooted for months. I have used a ton of ROMS. Currently using Warm 2.2. I tried several GB ROMS but not having custom kernals SUCKS. And I hate ASOP ROMS they are all too buggy and I need to record 720p too so that's out. So I use a nice Froyo Sense ROM. All was good until recently I noticed I have a problem with recovery. It be actin a fool. I tell it to wipe all data etc and it *does* it but it doesn't actually *do* it. So i get the message that it worked, I flash a new ROM, and when I get in my apps are STILL there. But I get FCs out the wazzu. This all came about when I decided to try Synergy. I then switched back to warm due god awful battery life thanks to the lack of custom kernals(i know they are out now but they weren't when this happened).
Now, I can't even get my market to work! And half my programs FC I'm assuming because they were installed under GB and now are on Froyo. I can't replace them however because the market don't be workin.
So, i now need to do a COMPLETE re-do of my phone. I don't need to go back to S-Off but short of that everything needs *fixing*. I need to somehow fix Clockwork, then i need to truly wipe the data and cache, then I need to finally put on a new ROM(Im thinking of having another go at Synergy I liked it a lot and now there are new kernals for it). But I am afraid to just install it, since I know Clockwork is boinked. And I know that other recover is supposed to be better so maybe I could try that but I've never used it and don't really know how. So if someone could post a couple steps or just links to help me fix this thing I'd be happier than a catfish at a rodeo!
Boogidy boogidy boogidy,
Amen.
Change recoveries: Amon_RA if you want backwards compatbility with older scripts, or TeamWin Recovery Project (which is really new, but doesn't support the old scripting style). Visit the development section to find these. Each thread has instructions on how to flash. Since you are S-OFF, it's as simple as putting a file on your SDcard and rebooting into the bootloader.
There are Custom GB kernels now, but they are still learning to crawl and in diapers
Amon RA ftw. I've never had issues with it. CWM is very unreliable.
Sounds more like user error if you ask me.

Look for the amon_RA thread in development section. Install that (2.3) it supports old and new scripting. Cwm has known wipe issues anyway. The thread has all the flashing instructions u need. Also search for vr superwipe and flash that in recovery to wipe for you.

I knew it had issues with dalvik, I've never read anything about it not wiping your system data and apps. And anyway, if the programs at fault its not bloody well operator error is it? This post was asking how to fix my phone, not why it was broken(which is irrelevant since I'm looking to re-do everything anyway AND switch to AmonRa).

What exactly do ya mean there? The only thing I'm concerned with is battery life I often work 17 hour days and have to use my phone during that time. With Synergy that wasn't even remotely possible. But if the new kernals correct that then I'm happy

I got tired of worrying about my battery life and having to turn all of my radios off, etc just to make it through the day AND use my phone.
So I hit ebay and bought 3 cheap batteries (1500mah, I didn't want an extended one) which came with an external wall charger for $11 with free shipping. Delivery took about two weeks from China but it was so worth it. Now I just leave with an extra battery in my pocket and abuse the crap out of my phone. It's great, and an easy solution to anyone's battery life issues.

I've never had a problem with CWM but I've read a lot of bad things about it so I switched to amon ra. I havnt had any problems with it either. It's simple to use, if u can use CWM then u can figure out amon ra. If I'm not mistaken myn suggests only amon ra for synergy, and the freedom kernel works great with it. I don't think your nands from CWM work with amon ra. So you'll have to restore one then use Rom mngr to flash amon ra then back it up.then use Rom mngr to flash CWM and restore another, flash amon ra, back it up.....so on and so on.

To start off, I had never rooted, or flashed anything until sunday, when root was finally made available to GB users with the locked bootloader.... That being said... I DO know how to read, and have done a lot of it over the past few weeks, while waiting for root. So.....
I had no problem with getting s-off, and root of my evo, followed the simple directions (thanks to the devs for making it so simple) and voila, ROOT!!
Next... I knew I wanted to try the synergy+god mode rom, Installed that, and got stuck at the boot screen for over an hour, so that was a no go (from more reading I see this could be due to only having a 2gb sd card?) Next I tried the sprintlovers all in one.... Kept getting errors on that, and it just would not load, *I had no problem installing the standalone version tho* Checked that out, and decided to try this rom [KingsROM][Alliance RLS-3] [ODEXED] [NETFLIX]SENSE 2.1+ 3.0 HybriD 3D " The BREED "
Have been using since sunday night, and I like it, its quite smooth, way faster than stock, and has some really nice visual effects.... however.... battery life has been deplorable! I was under the impression it was supposed to get better after 3 or 4 charge cycles, but I have charged 5 times now, and no better... I used to get a good 20 hours out of a charge with the stock rom, and I'm gettin about 6-7 outta this rom, with the same usage....
So...I guess my questions are, What should I expect in terms of battery life? Should I wait a little longer for the battery to settle down, or move on to a new rom? If move on... any idea what I may have done wrong with the other 2 roms mentioned, or recommendations to a similar rom?

Ok now you said you done some reading which is great. Now there are tools out there that will wipe you system clean prior to flashing new roms. I do this when I want to start fresh Caulkins format all is a great one to use. Try doing that next time you want to load up a rom. First you flash that then you flash the rom of your choice.
Now battery life. IMHO if you want to get better battery life I would try an AOSP rom - preferably Decks 1.2.1 with a Tiamat sbc kernel.... Give it a shot
You CAN get great battery life with the ROM you have now.
The best I got on Sense ROMs was with NetArchy Kernels, preferably SBC HAVS More
I attached the one I liked the best. Remember, this is for Sense ROMS.
Edit!!
File Removed 'casue I'm not smart....

SDCard size doesn't matter when using Synergy, as it nolonger requires an SD-EXT partition to function. I will say this however, I have flashed Synergy on multiple EVO's and each time I would get stuck at the boot screen(the animated Synergy Rom logo). I was however able to get every device to boot past this screen, and here is what I did.
1. Prior to flashing the ROM All this is done in the Recovery (Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik-Cache, Wipe Data, Wipe Boot, Wipe System, Perform Factory Reset Data Reset, <--- Do all this 2-3 times, Then I would flash Calkulin's format all script Twice.
2. Flash Synergy Rom
3. Let the phone sit at the animated boot screen for 10 minutes
4. Perform a Battery Pull
5. Boot the phone back up normally (don't go to bootloader or recovery)
6. Rom boots, and you can enjoy Synergized goodness.
I don't know why but on some phones Synergy won't make it past the initial bootscreen no matter how long you let it sit, without a battery pull, however I do highly advise giving it a minimum of 10 minutes, just to make sure that it had time to properly load whatever it was loading on initial boot.

I 100% agree with this statement. CWM has caused nothing but headaches. On an unrelated sidenote and because it doesn't deserve its own thread. HipKat does the 2.10 HBoot support fastboot commands? Long ago I downgraded my HBoot to 0.76 because nothing at the time supported Fastboot other than 0.76.

There is also TWRP (TeamWin Recovery ProjecT) however I have had nothing but problems using TWRP and flashing Sense 2.1+3.0 and Sense 3.0 Roms that have Godmode. So I have stayed with Ra Recovery.

Glad to hear it. Synergy is a great Rom, however I found some things about it that just irked me. Small Qirks. Like to Answer a call, or turn off the alarm, I had to drag the icon to the circle. Well let me tell you what. When your alarm wakes you up after 4 hours of sleep, and your grumpy and groggy as hell. Dragging a small icon into a circle to turn off the GD alarm clock, or answer a call from someone who shouldnt be calling at 5am in the first place...... either way those were the only 2 reasons i went back to CM7.
ya, it seems pretty smooth so far, but damn... b4 i flashed it, I had 65% batt left, after synergy loaded(which only took just under 10 min btw) it said 19%....
It seems nice and all, but not as graphically awe inspiring as the kings alliance, so unless batt life is substantially better, I'll prolly go back to the kings.... I still havent given the golden monkey kernel a fair shot....
Thats just my 1st impression anyway.... thanks again!

You cannot base battery life off of your first flash, you need to give the ROM 48-72 hours to settle into the device. Running 100% Stock Synergy I was able to average 20-22 hours of average use out of my device, and 30-32 hours of minimal use, and 10 hours of heavy use.
I just got my hands on the dinc. I am coming from a rooted D1. Unforuntulny the dinc has been updated and has s-on..
even searched for s-on Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms. I love it lol...
Anyways, if i have read correctly if s-on is enabled, I am just SOL in rooting my phone and using custom roms, themes etc till someone finds a workaround , correct?
Also all my game and app data on my d1, anyway to move it over to the dinc?
Updated to GB 2.3.4 and S-On? If so, I found THIS thread a few days ago that seems to be working. Before you do any of that..make sure your SD card is formatted to FAT32.
Apps yes...you can move those over to your Inc. Data would not be a good idea. The data is from a totally different phone so you would cause a lot of issues by doing restoring any app data. My friend who moved on to an Inc from a DX tried to do it and got FC's all over the place.
Good luck and enjoy your new phone!

Thanks for the link, everything i found was s-off only..
As for backing up info, example, all my game progress will be lost? what would be the process to do this? Guessing the phone would need to be rooted?

I looked that over and it looked like it should get you back to s-off, rooted froyo. It's a LOT like the method jcase developed for the Tbolt before Revolutionary. If you can get s-off, you're good to go. Flash a custom recovery and flash a rooted ROM. Should be that simple.
thanks for the info!
Yeah, that thread works.
Thanks again guys, i got it to work last night.. Now i just need to decide on a rom? Any suggestions? I loved chevyNo1 on D1 :/
Your going to love the incredible compared to the og droid, everything is so much snappier, and battery life will increase too.
I'm not a sense guy at all but McD's ROMS are super nice.
I really liked chevy's ROMs too. CM7.1 stable and the latest incredikernel on 10/12 by Tiny will get you started in the right direction if you want to stick with AOSP or if you want something more barebones grab IncDeck 1.3 Final... I just went back to CM7.1 because I felt I got a little better batterylife.
Will give them a try. I did download cm7.1 and on re boot after install it gets stuck on the boot loader. Do I need to do a complete wipe or something ?

Yeah, complete wipe is recommended if you're not coming from an earlier CM7.

Ok I'm a little rusty cause on the d1 I never had to wipe.. in the Rom manager just select clear and wipe and that should do the trick ? I got my games backed up so that isn't a issue. But all settings and such will be lost ,correct?
Thanks

Personally, I never use Rom Manager. I flash through recovery; if you use Rom Manager to reboot into recovery, do a factory reset from there and then flash and you should be good.
Ok cool.. thanks for the quick replies.
McD's ROMS i havent seen any of those. I loaded CM7.1 Very simliar to chevyno1's rom.. Trying something different, miui right now, its not bad, reminds me of the iphone though.. Any other suggestions?
I strongly recommend against ROM manager, too. Any dev worth his salt tends to recommend against flashing through ROM Manager because it doesn't seem to do what it's supposed to. It's been a problem child for a long time now. When performing functions done through recovery, it's best to go directly into recovery to perform them. I think the same can be said for the bootloader.
Sorry i meant clockwork, dont know why i keep on saying rom manager. Can anyone help me with roms or should i post a new post on it?
I kind of dig miui but dont like the sms keyboard layout. Its like cm7 and i really like the stock dinc set up. With my big fingers i get less typos with its set up.. Any suggestions?
Here is a list of Dinc ROMs. I personally recommend CM7, but if you like HTC Sense, go for Runny Revolution 3D. Great Sense ROM.
