I'm trying to update to 2.2 so that I can root using unrevoked 3.21 method. The problem is when I go to menu> settings> system updates> HTC software updates> check now
It tells me there are no updates available. Is there another way to get the update. My firmware version is 2.1-update1
Thanks
Why don't you just use simpleroot or unrevoked 3 and root from 2.1?
I'm using linux so simple root is a PITA and unrevoked 3 doesn't unlock NAND.
unrevoked 3 doesn't unlock NAND.

But unrevoked forever does.
same
the same issues were happening to me where it was not finding an update to 2.2 (i'm currently on 2.1)... i kept rechecking all day today and EVENTUALLY it found it and downloaded - after about 50+ times telling me there are no updates. however it keeps getting hung during the install. ive wound up (rechecking for hours) downloading twice and installing 2 different downloaded instances of this update but it refuses to install.
i'm wondering if this is due to using unrevoked on ver 2.1? have you previously used unrevoked as well?

No unrevoked here. I tried doing toasts method, since I'm using linux, and I got hung up in the middle. I flashed the xxxximg.zip file but never got to root or nand unlock due to an inability to interpret the directions or find help doing it, apparently there aren't as many linux techies out there as I thought.
I'm thinking the screwed up root might have something to do with it. I called sprint and after 10 minutes on the phone with a tech he finally told me to go to menu>settings> systedm updates> htc software update...
after I told him that's what I've been doing and it didn't work, that's why I'm calling you! He said I should bring it into a sprint store after that.
Seriously man, make it easy. Use unrevoked 3 + forever and then load a custom Froyo ROM.

Where can I get unrevoked 3? When I go ther site only 3.21 is available. Says 3 but in fine print underneath it says version 3.21
I'm pretty sure the latest unrevoked works fine for 2.1 as well as 2.2.

I am currently rooted with Unrevoked 3 and want to finish the full root with NAND unlock. My plan is to use netarchy's 2.2 ROM and 3.7.6 kernal as I do not want to lose the FPS fix (been using it on 2.1 and LOVE it!!)
Anyway, there are a lot of different methods out there to root and I am trying to determine which method is going to be sucessful following Unrevoked 3 and will not be overly complex. I would appreciate any input.
I am assuming that I will lose all my settings/programs/etc so I should do a complete backup first? I have MyBackUp Pro which I have used before but I am open to suggestions for a better method.
Thanks

Did you ever get an answer to this? I'm in the same situation and what to determine the best solution.
I finally got my hands on an evo with 2.1 update 1 and have read about every method out there. Wich rooting method should I start with if I want full root?

some people use simpleroot.. the most 'foolproof' way in my opinion, is toast's method.. just make sure you do part 1 and 2 ( it should be in wiki ).. 1 does root, 2 does nand unlock.

This will allow root access and unlocked NAND without downgrading the PRI or otherwise messing with your system. Everything will be the same, save for root access and unlocked NAND. (what the people of this forum have decided to call "full root" for... err... still confused on the reason for this stupid term).
So it sounds like unrevoked forever is the recommended method for getting full root after rooting with Unrevoked3. My issues is I'm having trouble flashing certain roms with just Unrevoked3. From what I've read not all roms can be flashed with Unrevoked3. I want to try a different root method, but I don't want to screw anything up. It seems like Unrevoked Forever is the best option at this point, but seems kind of extreme. Does anyone agree or disagree?
I've already downloaded forever on my phone...just waiting to get the courage to install it.

I used Unrevoked Forever and didn't have a single issue. I've flashed a number of ROMs since then, and still no problems. I'm currently running Baked Snack 1.3 with Netarchy's latest kernel and Clockwork. Hope this helps you with your fear.

There is no difference between the recovery unrevoked3 installs and one installed by flashing an image after using the leaked ENG bootloader.
Some roms had problems with the unrevoked3 exploit because it did not unlock NAND and they made the assumption that NAND was unlocked. With unrevoked forever (or, if you wish to lose your 1.40 PRI, the leaked ENG bootloader), this is no longer an issue.
+1 for Unrevoked Forever. Unrevoked 3.1 + Unrevoked Forever worked flawlessly on my phone. You can even flash the ENG bootloader as a separate package if you want, so that you have the fastboot commands without downgrading the PRI.
The only downside is that there is currently no way to completely undo Unrevoked Forever. If you have to get the phone replaced, a tech who knows what he's doing could easily tell that you've rooted your phone.

Thanks for the info. Yeah I'm a little worried about the lack of undo, but I have Sprint's insurance on the phone so I guess I could always get it replaced (+ deductible). I think I'm going to do the Forever method.

So I just got my Incredible today. Unboxed it and am trying to root.
I've been following the steps to the T on here http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_HTC_Incredible#Unrevoked_Method
But after pushing all the files it says to push and then doing the "chmod" stuff when I get to the step to do "/data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin" it just repeats the line then says "permission denied.
Then I just tried to continue and do the next step.
"chmod cd/data/local" then it just says "Bad mode"
I then still continue with the steps till I get to the last one
"./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin" and again it just says "permission denied"
So after all this not working I did a factory reformat of the phone and tried again. Still same out come on everything. Then I tried the unrEVOked method and I the HBOOT drivers but the program just says "Failed to flash recovery image"
I have successfully installed AndroidSDK and I know this because I upgraded from the HTC Eris and I've rooted that. I have all the correct drivers (I think at least that stupid VZW media thing may be interfering)
So I just don't know what to do now and I just want to have my phone rooted and get CM6 on it. Any hellp would be greatly appreciated thank you.

It sounds like your system has 2.2 preloaded on it. If that is the case, unrEVOked3 will not work. Also, since the phone is not S-OFF, the other steps you are attempting will not work. You will need to do one of two things.
1. Find unrEVOked 3.2 to root 2.2.
2. Revert the phone to 2.1 and set S-OFF and then root the phone.

Oh and I forgot yeah its on 2.2 because its brand new just got it today. And the steps I was following on the CyanogenMod wiki were to downgrade my phone to 2.1 but thats where I was running into the problems listed below. And you can' get unrEVOked 3.2 until they release it again.
Just grab the latest unrevoked build from their IRC channel. You should be able to find the link easily and it should work to root your stock 2.2

Sorry if re-post....trying to figure it out for a couple of days already but still no success
So I did the OTA update for Uncapped FPS. I know that it removes the "root" superuser access.
So after successfully installing the OTA update, I ran Unrevoked 3.21
While running Unrevoked I get the error Internal error: couldn't find misc.
NOTE: I searched and saw a couple of suggestions
1. Install HTC sync and uninstall it again. -Didn't work
2. Use Disk drive instead of Charge only. - Didn't work
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
The updates from Sprint are rooted by developers. You have to wait until they do it and NEVER update from Sprint.
Chances are the unrevoked team will update their files so you could root 3. 29. And the usually move quickly.

I just guinea pig volunteered myself to try Unrevoked with the new OTA, and it worked just fine for me!
However, I did have root prior, but I used the S-ON tool, and then ran the RUU to 3.26.651.6, I had wiped my entire phone coming from FreshEVO 3.3.0.1.
I also used AmonRA's 1.8 recovery instead of CWmod.
Your mileage may vary, I suppose.

Mine was rooted before. I didn't install any custom ROMs. Then I ran the OTA. Now when I run Unrevoked, it gives me the "Internal error: couldn't find misc"
The weird thing is that I did it on 3 evos and the other 2 worked just fine.

have you solved? i have the same problem with a Desire
I am still getting:"Internal error: Could not find misc." on 3.21 . My HBOOT is .97. is that the issue?
no one has fingered this out yet?
just got my evo today, had 2.2 pre-installed.
i'm getting the same error.
uninstalled htc sync, tried it on 2 different computers, no go.
it usually gets to where (i assume) it's supposed to reboot into the new recovery and ends up booting all the way into sense. manually rebooting it after that and doing the hboot thing as it asks leads to the error mentioned here.
right now i'm trying it with a clean sd card, doesn't seem like it'd make a difference but it's worth a shot.

Same problem. Direct from sprint, came with 2.2. Followed the instructions, booted all the way through so i manually rebooted and did HBOOT and received "Internal Error: couldnt find misc."
Im not sure if its any different but my Evo happens to be white.. must be a new thing?
Anyone else have any ideas on this? Just received a new evo today, came with 2.2 on the phone which is nice, but can't root it. Was hoping to put cyanogen onto the phone.
I picked up a Desire from Telus yesterday and it (unrevoked) worked, however... I wanted to reflash the recovery image to amon ra (more features) and today I get the error "couldn't find misc".
hello all: im as newbie as it gets with this rooting, but very good at following instructions and very computer savy.I have a droid incredible with software 2.2,which Im trying to root.using unrevoked 3.21 I have followed all instructions to the tee,all goes well till the end,it says waiting for root, and stays that way for as long as you leave it. Ive tried 4 different computers all running win 7,one 64 bit,the other 3 are 32 bit,all with same result,(waiting for root) I first loaded the modified usb driver from unrevoked, it shows android bootloader interface good to go under android phone in device manager.I start the reflash program, made sure usb debugging was on made sure phone was connecting in charge mode, made sure unknown sources could be installed. I even tried installing htc sync, then uninstalling, because another site said drivers from htc sync were needed. nothing has got me by waiting for root. I have seen this same problem over and over on many different sites, but as of yet to see one fix, the procedure for unrevoked 3.21 seems very simple and straight forward, but every answer Ive seen to this problem, points back to original instructions, which Ive done over and over. any new ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanx in advance.
There are several threads here already discussing how the Nov 15th?? OTA firmware update that VZW pushed to the incredible can not be rooted in the same way as past versions.
And therefore the 3.21 version of the Unrevoked tool (reflash_package.exe) does NOT WORK, and we need to wait for them to update it.
Those who had the older firmware, rooted it, and used Unrevoked Forever to gain S-OFF (not the same as the "reflash-package.exe" rooting tool) do have options.
BUT Any one who has received in INC with this recent OTA firmware update but didn't have "S-OFF" (like due to a recent purchase, warranty replacement phone, being prompted about the upgrade and saying "yes" to accept it being installed), will have to wait.

Thanks Kid, I appreciate it, sorry for it being a stupid question, but I guess everybody has to start somewhere! reminds me when satellite tv cards were being programmed, you could ask almost any question, and many people would always reply, read ,read and read some more.I spent 2 days reading and trying to root my phone, simply because I should be able to delete any software on it I choose to.I've never bought any computer I couldnt delete software I dont use or like. After 2 days I thought maybe I was out of luck until new software, but wasnt going to give up until I was sure, thanx for being the ONE person to fill me in!!
AHHH, I was wondering what all this waiting for root threads were about. Guess since I'm s-off and running SR I was out of the loop. I think I'd be totally freaked by now if I lost root on my phone. LOL!

Not sure. Were you S-OFF before you tried that? If so that could be why it worked.
For those that are still S-ON, this set of instructions could work -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9384491&postcount=199 It did for me on my GF's AMOLED Inc that was S-On and received the latest OTA update. Now she's S-Off and Rooted with the Nov 15th update. If you have SLCD, then read some of the posts after that one before trying, (like Post #205 & 206)

I saw a thread from joshua at unrevoked. They updated the unrevokedforever.zip file to include the newest radio version and said they are actively working on getting a new version of unrevoked in place that will work with the newest phones. I imagine it will take a little while as the newer phones have different data partitions than the older ones so they need to figure out some very complex methods to create a one click root this time.
If you feel the need to root now there is a thread with instructions on how to do it manually in this forum.

unrevoked forever is just a zip file you flash with a custom recovery installed that sets your phone to s-off....
unrevoked is a one step process that you use as an executable file that flashes the zip as well as giving you a custom recovery and adds superuser to your phone achieving full root.
well according to their twitter, it seems they are done with the evo 3.70 ota support, but their release may be delayed because of weather.

Ahhhh ok....thanks for clearing that up. So Unrevoked Forever is only good on a phone thats already rooted...so I'd need to root my phone with unrevoked first(whenever the new version is out) and then run unrevoked forever to keep any new OTAs from unrooting my phone.
I'm a LONG time blackberry user so all this is new to me...that's why I'm patiently waiting for the new unrevoked rather than going through the multi-step process

The one click unrevoked method will automatically run and install unrevoked forever. But there are times when people have noticed it fails to install successfully but are still rooted. So at that point, you can just download and flash unrevoked forever yourself to get S-OFF.
