[Q] Would you mind helping a Android noob? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok,I'm new to Android, fresh out of Windows Mobile and might not know what I'm talking about, so... here we go,
I'm looking for my dream ROM, and kernel combination
Is there a ROM out there that has:
Delicious Froyo
4G Enabled
Can use Bluetooth controllers - (Wiimote, MSI BGP 100) [I guess that means it'd have to be Senseless?]
Retains its HDMI out functionality
Uncapped FPS
Over 2 multi touch points
Stability - Doesn't crash often
Decent Battery Life - (More than 5 Hours)
Swype Keyboard
802.11N Wireless Support Enabled
Overclocking support would be nice, but probably not necessary
I'm currently running Fresh Rom, but its starting to seriously lag after a few weeks of use, I guess its because of all the apps and widget mods I installed. And stupid Sense keeps starting up when I start my phone, even though launcher pro is my default home.
So I'm ready to flash another rom to have a clean start, now that I kinda know what I want.

There isn't a ROM with all of that

Looks to me like most (if not all) of the things you want to do can be done on Fresh. If it's lagging, wipe the caches using Amon and see if that speeds things up. I ran Fresh for a long while with no issues. For the past 3 days, I've been trying out the latest Baked Snack rom, and it's very good, too. The only thing I'm not sure about is the multi-touch feature because I haven't come across the need for it yet. I recommend you do the same thing I'm doing and everyone else does: Download them, flash them, keep them for a few days, and then try another rom. You'll be able to eliminate the ones you don't care for and then narrow down your choices. Do a search for multi-touch and see which roms have fixes for it, and try those out first.

or at least ava froyo v7, thats got everything working for me and use a kingsxkernel

I believe most of those are functional on most of the ROMs now. As far as swype keyboard, I think calkulins ROM (evio2) has that natively, or there's a new ROM someone else was working on that I think had swype listed, it was called echo5 ROM, I think. It's not on the first page, it was on the 2nd page last time I saw it.
The fps, overclocking, and >2pt multitouch are all functions of the kernel, I believe. And the 2 main kernel devs (kingx, and netarchy) support those functions in their kernels, which will flash on most any custom ROM
(I'm fairly new, from winmo, too. I was reluctant and apprehensive for awhile, but really starting to like Android, not to mention most the great devs from winmo are drifting to Android, or already have. Xda has made the transition that much easier)

Like stated, any Rom can be anything. You can flash almost any kernel with any ROM..You can start with the stock ROM and flash what you want to get what you want...very customizable compared to WinMo.
That being said, I'm running Calkulin's EViO and love it. I can get almost 10th hours with heavy, heavy usage. With multitouch visualizer from the market, I can see 4 touch points. The phone is overlooked and fast as veal...never laggy. 4G works just fine. Lastly, the latest version has sense as an add-on, so no worries about it starting.
And, I have swype as an .apk if u want it.

Thanks for the quick replies peoples, I went and wiped both cache, and the dalvik cache... even though I have no idea what the dalvik is, I'm using Anon Ra btw.
Calkulens Rom and a kings kernel sound like what I'm looking for, but what about the Bluetooth I know that sense based roms have corrupted Bluetooth settings, so no gamepad, are calkulins roms senseless? And work with wiimotes?
Sent from my HTC EVO

VaelPak is the greatest. Just doesn't support bluetooth controllers but may be in an update soon
Swyped from my VaelPaked Evo 4G

Um no you can't flash kernels on most roms. They are either for sense roms or asop (senseless roms..cm6) you have to read the kernel thread... and swype you can install on any rom just search and you will find out the apk. For it. 4g doesn't work on cm6 so that's out the question then...
Most kernels are set to 1.19 to 1.22 top overclock.. setcpu is a paid app to over/underclock.. battery life there are a lot of things that causes bad battery. Bad reception, screen brightness, a app that keeps your phone awake, the settings of your CPU...etc...

10hrs of heavy use? Please explain heavy heavy use because I get 4 tops even with the battery trick.. btw I use a wall charger not the phone. I have tried about every rom including yours and what I call heavy heavy usage is non-stop on phone. I can be on here on full battery, txt and do research on phone and get only 4 tops. Even with underclock.. you use wifi during heavy usage? Stock battery?
Just don't believe 10 hours heavy usage...

So that combination of Calkulin's Rom and King's kernel will not work?
And does Overclocking seriously affect battery life?

When you overclock your CPU is running faster than normal which in turn needs more juice... kind of goes hand in hand...
Yeah that should be fine. If I'm correct its a sense rom. When you look at a kernel you usually read what it has implemented and what your looking for in a kernel. They tell you which one its made for. Just was letting you know..
Also always do a nand backup in case of loops or anything goes wrong..

[Q] Rooted my Evo, got what I need on it, but now I want more!

So I successfully rooted my evo using the unrEVOked method here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787304 (I have hboot .97) I'm already using the free wifi tether (main reason for rooting) and I'm experimenting with setCPU. I like the stock 2.2 layout, but if there's something that'll work better, can you point me in the right direction? Also, I'd like to be able to not have to find all of my apps again, and if possible, keep the app data too (i.e. I have shazam and would like to keep all of my tags). go with fresh. . its by far the most stable and it doesnt prevent anything .. 4g flash, all sense stuff .. easily one of the more popular roms..

I am a huge fan of Avalaunch mods. AvaFroyo10 was just released, and I love it. He focuses on high quality multimedia. The audio is better than most other roms. He also has tweaked the APN so it will lock on to Verizon towers for 3G if Sprint has 1 bar or less.
i am also a giant fan of ava, but i am getting no battery power. as an experiment, i unplugged my phone with full power, no use, and it was fully drained in 7 hours. ava works on some phones but not others.

[Q] Will rooting to 2.3 disable htcsense.com?

Hi! I got my shiny new Desire HD yesterday (upgraded from an iphone) and by god do I love it, just perfect for me.
Although with it comes a lot of.. junk that I simply do not need (scrolling through a good 30 apps just to get to my most used), plus I heard that 2.3 (Specifically Cyanogenmod 7) brings with it better battery, better performance and with it being rooted, more features.
I'm looking to root it as soon as possible before I start putting a lot of things on it, rather than do a lot with it now and then have to do it again a couple months down the road.
My main question is, I love htcsense.com and I love the extra features it gives me, especially being able to track the phone, gives me much needed peace of mind, if I root to a 2.3 ROM (probably cm7) will htcsense.com no longer work?
Thankyou for any/all replies, oh and a little quickie at the end, I'm planning to go with cm7 because it seems the most basic and customizable for my needs, and battery life is a huge plus for me as I'm planning to use this beauty in and around college, is cm7 a good idea?
Thank you and have a great day.
If that HTC feature relies on having the app on the phone then it wont work as CM7 is not a Sense ROM and contains no sense applications.
Neither do I believe simply installing the apk, if possible, would work.
Be nice to be wrong though.
Sent using witchcraft via XDA Developers Premium App.
Ahh, so in short, no?
Fair enough, is there a way to install the part needed for it to work after rooting it with cm7?
Probably not. Again, hope I'm wrong because it is a great utility that would otherwise cost you (Wavesecure app for example and I believe one of the anti-virus apps provides same functionality).
If anyone has the apk I'd happily try it but IIRC the apps rely on the Sense framework.
Bear with me, just checking this out.

Confirmed. Without the apk installed the phone can't communicate with the HTC servers.

Hi there,
i've recently rooted my Desire HD (and upgraded to 2.3.3) & I can tell you that HTCsense still works. No idea about if it still works on non-sense roms such as CM7 or not.
I've been using RCMix and Android Revolution roms in the past week & both of them are a lot better than the stock Froyo that my phone came with though.
Did a search and found an apk but it is confirmed that it will not run on AOSP ROMs such as Cyanogenmod.
The only option you have would be to run a Sense based ROM then install something like ADW.Launcher which has categorised app drawer (meaning you can choose what apps appear).
Sent using witchcraft via XDA Developers Premium App.
Thankyou for the replies you've really helped.
Does sense rom mean, a rom that has HTC sense enabled? I assume it does.
Also, if I want to get 2.3+ android with sense so I can use the htcsense.com service, which rom would be best to root too? I've only ever heard of cm7, that's about it.
Thanks again!
Coredroid is a sense ROM. Pretty good too. If your main concern is tracking your phone, why don't you try Lookout from the marketplace. its free and is also a very good virus checker too!

Does it improve the battery life at all?
Oh also, is it easy to change back to the original ROM that came with the phone in-case of any warranty issues? Coredroid just doesn't look as.. polished as cyanogen, I could be completely wrong though.
If so, I'll root it today! Love the community by the way, I can't say anything bad about the iPhone community really, although they seem to care a lot less.
Does rooting to an Android 2.3 ROM bring everything that normal Android 2.3 brings and then depending on the ROM, special things? So it doesn't matter what ROM I get that's 2.3 they'll all have 2.3 Android features?
Do a backup in Tom manager in case you want to go back to your previous rom. Coredroid is a very fast rom IMO, but its dependent on how you use it much like any other rom really.
batery life is better than stock but again you will need to be mindful of gps and wifi etc. An awesome gingerbread kernel to improve battery life does not yet exist.
Fantastic, I'll give CoreDroid a try then, thankyou for your help, you've been very useful and informative.
One last thing before I begin the process, what is Tom manager? I did a quick google search and a look into the market but found nothing, did you mean Rom manager?
my bad. I have auto correction on. I meant ROM manager.

Ahh, I got it and I'm trying to backup my current ROM but I need to install "clockwordmod recovery" and whenever I try I get a "An error occurred while attempting to run privilged commands!" which is a shame.
Oh, and is there an up-to-date guide on how to root? Pardon my ignorance.
You need root first.
There's several "how to's" in the development forum. More information than we could put here (or should).
Sorry, I'm being incredibly silly, I keep getting ROM's and rooting mixed up, I'm in the process of rooting it now then I'll install a ROM, I haven't decided which yet but I might.. shop around, sorta speak.
Thanks for the help guys, take care.
Because sense apps aren't running in background, Cyanogen should be less stressful on the battery. However stock roms are usually not developed to maximize battery life in the same way custom roms are (afterall, battery life is a bugbear for developers too!). With this in mind, Coredroid even with sense is still better on your battery life than stock sense. Its all dependent on how you use it though (turn off GPS and wifi when no longer required etc..). Intensive use will naturally drain your battery sooner than conservative use. If you find battery life a pain with any rom, you could try juice defender free to automatically regulate consumption of battery.
Best advice, try a number of mods every week or so, and settle on one you like once you've experienced them. You souls also download battery calibrator from market and use after every flash to help you with the battery.
After a little soulsearching I'm going to give RCMixHD a try, it seems very popular which is usually a good sign, it has sense 3.0 and 2.3.3 Android so it's practically perfect.
The only thing I'm puzzled by now is "radios" I've worked out that they determine call reception and 3G+HSPDA whatnots, but do I actually need a new one before/after flashing to a new ROM? There seems to be a lot of radios out there and I have no clue which to go with and what they do.
Oh, also, does overclocking your phone as you have done have a huge impact on the battery life? I assume it has atleast some impact.
Only certain roms currently support overclocking, with some having the ability only after a kernel flash. CM7.0.2 however comes with ability without need to install anything else. You will need SetCPU to overclock and select a governor to regulate how power is maintained. You need to set minimum frequency when phone is idle etc.. It's easier than it sounds but do read into the overclocking threads for dhd we have here if in any doubt.

Is gingerbread worth it over Froyo roms?

Hey guys im curious is there anyone who has been able to fully replace EC05 roms with one of the gingerbread roms availalbe? And in doing so keeping the stability, battery performance, and speed of the EC05 roms? I've personally gone from an amazing experience with ACS SFR 1.2 to Ginger Bamboozled and ERA hurricane rom and personally have not seen any benefits with keeping gingerbread. I notice no battery improvements and the phone has slowed down significantly. The only plus i've seen with gingerbread is the cool CRT off animation. Note i've never run the commands to stop processes that update in the background i.e. DRM and SNS, which from what I read make a fairly big difference with getting better battery life on EH17 roms. So at this point I'm thinking of going back to SFR 1.2 or another EC05 rom. Is there someone out there that can give me some useful tips on how to make the Gingerbread roms run smoother for me or am I just wasting my time? Also I used to get random Reboots on Gingerbread but i've noticed that it has stopped, odd. Oh almost forgot I use my keyboard all the time for writing emails for work and not having the skipped letters fix is so annoying. I want to shoot my phone sometimes.
Have you tried Spare Parts and setting all animations to FAST in it? I am on Bonsai B14 EG22 and my phone is about as fast as it was on EC05 ROMs. I do stop all processes when I first boot and have a few frozen with Titanium.

I don't care if that does anything for the actual speed or not...its a hell of a placebo effect. Another thing is you could oc with tegrak
As of right now, I don't see any advantage of using a Gingerbread Rom. I was in the same boat as you. I tried a few of them but due to the random reboots and keyboard skips, I couldn't take it anymore. I'm now using the Epic Revolution Rom and I love it. I won't be going back to Gingerbread till the official release.

Depends on the apps you have
I'm running the ERA OLYMPUS 1.6 EH06 ROM. I hoard apps and that's really bad for performance of the device and battery. I haven't frozen the SNS/Updates but I freeze the DRM every time I install a ROM anyway. I just managed to get all the apps that like running in the background to not do that by messing with the settings and clearing widgets. I can now last at least 5 hours on battery while actually using the phone. My battery life has been about the same on every ROM I've ever used. I would say to try this ROM with Journaling enabled and running Chris' new EH17 Plus kernel. I am also using the EH17 modem. Everything is working pretty well for me now.
No good reason to keep the leaks. However, if you are converted to ext4 and use the v6 supercharge script its as smooth and responsive as sfr 1.2 at 1.4ghz.

I've been dealing with the same dilemma the past week. I've found that there's really no pros to keeping the gb roms. Although I really like the theme on bamboozle as well as my quadrant stats. Speaking of which, can anyone tell me where I can get the SII lockscreen that comes with bamboozle? It's definitely my preferred lock screen. If anyone can help that'd be awesome thanks!
Thanks for good responses
Thanks guys for all the feedback, I think i'm being swayed more towards the EC05 roms until the release of gingerbread source files. I think the biggest thing now that look at it is the keyboard letter skips. I rely on my phones keyboard far to much to write really fast work emails and no matter how I setup my virtual keyboard or auto correction on TouchPal keyboard or Swype, its just not accurate enough and I waste more time trying to fix the auto corrections. Thanks again everyone and I really hope this thread assist others with making a their choices on which Rom to Choose or which version of Rom to choose. Froyo here I come.... now i gotta figure out if I want to go with Era or ACS lol.
In my opinion, no. After trolling all around using GB Leaks I finally came back to Froyo (Bonsai 4.1.3) because of the stability and speed.
I think its best just to wait for something official when it can be polished and tweaked with.
I too have been up and down the development pages, trying out different roms an modems, froyo and GB. Froyo was cool when i was using it, but I like the way GB looks. I actually had more problems with the Froyo roms than with GB roms, but that could be bc im getting better at rooting.
Right now im running RandomROM 2.3.4 on the EG22 modem with generation x theme. I get a couple of framework fc's throughout the day, but it doesnt seem to actually fc anything. I seem to just get the notification. battery life is amazing. I used to have to charge my phone after only 6 hours, even with light use. Now I dont need a charger until the end of the day, even with moderate to heavy use. I even use it as my wifi at home for xbox and whatnot. Touchpal's hardware prediction is pretty cool, although I havent really noticed much key skipping without it. I'm still new at rooting, so I don't do too much with oc and such.
I get about twice the battery life using RandomROMs hawk v4 vs any of the ec05 builds. Haven't experienced any TV's yet and only one random reboot after running the v6 script.

[Q] Fast ROM? Among some other q's

ive been kinda out of the rom flashing game for a bit.
but i just flashed prime 3d about a month ago and i've been finding my phone is rather slow, and the battery life is horrible.
so today i read about the ext4 mod, and tried that. my phone seems slightly faster than before as far as opening app drawer and getting into settings and little stuff, but.... my quadrant scores tanked my best is 1046.
with my previous rom i got up to 1700's. am i missing something? was i supposed to make a partition first before the ext4 mod thing?
should i not use setcpu or auto memory manager?
also, what is a good stable ROM that has full camera/camcorder(720p) and can be fast, or long battery life while tethering to my Transformer?
thanks for any info
I would try flashing the ext4 on a fresh rom install with a supported kernal. The 3.x roms are just battery hogs. I run Bugless Beast(aosp) Incredikernal with the ext4. My top quadrant was 2200-2300. I'm pretty sure 720p works but don't quote me on that. Wifi tether works fine.

i was also wondering about something else. a while back i flashed a kernel with some kind of opengl (or whatever the GPU software was) update, and since when the quadrant graphics 3d tests happen my screen is blank except for the DNA strand one? \
any clue on how to fix this?? i thought it was an incredikernal, but not sure
i switched to bugless and it feels faster after i did the supercharge v6 thing, but my quadrants are at 1100.
i remembered that when the screen was blank on quadrant i had flashed an incredikernal with gpu+, it was from 2010 and i think thats what my problem is

So this ROM has some purple in it, but you can use the UOT Kitchen to change what you don't like. I was in the habit of trying all the new ROMs that came out and was flashing all the time until I ran across this ROM. It is pretty much stock, but the battery life is incredible. From what I can tell Facebook for HTC Sense is not present, but with this ROM I have no reason to try the new ones that bog down the phone.

Need help finding ROMs, choosing which to try

I am trying to flash my Inc with a new ROM for the first time, but it seems like more than half the ROMs on this page are either removed by the developer or cant be downloaded because the download links are dead.
Any tips on what to try first, based on what available still? The only thing I am concerned with is that the ROM is stable and compatible with as many of the stock functions as possible, stuff like broken radios is not what I am looking for right now. Would be kinda cool to try one as different from stock as possible. Does CM7 work well on the Inc? I keep seeing people talking about stuff that is broken with it.

Ice Cream Sandwich. Abduction by Hanger84 is smoother than the Sense ROMs.
Sent from my Incredible using XDA
Abduction is good to try if you want to experice ice cream.... but prepare for some bugs and missing features ( ie Camcorder, camera, & flash on websites and netflix) I suggest one of the gingerbread Roms or Froyo Roms. CM 7 or 8 should be fine, but you loose some of the things you may be accustomed to in Sense (Widgets). But there are pretty good apps that can do what sense does, you just have to look for them.
I'm using CM 7.2 RC1 (RC2 crashes right away for me) with latest ICS Incredikernal and SmartassV2 governor, fully over-clocked. Never crashes, everything works but, of course, 720p recording. I even found decent settings for auto-brightness (Make about 16 levels, start out at ~70, go up in ~5 point increments, then increase. Set Window Length to 5 secs). I have tried three ICS roms but always went back.
I'm using the new Go Launcher but it has a couple of bugs. Clear its data to get the large icons if you are stuck on small. To change settings on the large weather clock you have to do it via the small weather clock.
I use CyanogenMod 7.2. Along with Chad/Tiny's Incredikernel, Jermaine/Tiny's EXT4All mod, and Launcher Pro. Speedy and battery efficient. The latest RC should be fine, I'm on one of the nightlies and have been using Pons' KANGs when his computer was still working.
In addition to Sonny Sekhon's Ice Cream Sandwich CM7 Theme.
If you like the stock ROM, and want something stable and based off of it, Liberation 3.0 is a good choice. It is basically a rooted, debloated, stock ROM. I keep a copy on my SD card incase I need access to EPST or just feel like using Sense.
ICS is getting there, but the laggy animations and general speed have kept me away. It seems to me that the current hardware acceleration isn't 100% implemented. But I have never used ICS outside of the Incredible. So I don't have room to compare.
I'm with the majority here. CM 7.2 RC2 is great. I actually have stock kernel though, I am not sure if performance is better with incredikernel but I can tell you that CM7 is TONS better than stock in terms of battery life, customization, and overall android experience. I like sense but on the Inc, it's like they stopped trying...
P.S. - I also use GO Launcher EX with kovdev's ICS theme.
Well I just switched from Abduction to CM9 and so far CM9 is much better!!

The latter may have been due to my SetCPU settings, I dunno, but it was getting hung up on simple apps, and I did not like a couple things about it, like getting calls when the screen is off required you to unlock it, then unlock it again at the receiving call screen. Also didnt like the battery meter.
Just installed Stock+ and immediately realized it wouldn't work at all when I saw that the App Data partition was still at 150MB. Thats the whole reason I rooted, so there is no way I am using a ROM that is eventually gonna give me the Low space messages again.
GOnna try the ones you guys suggested now
I like Wildstangs stock ROM, and gtiny's kernel. I used root app delete to debloat it. And run the on demand deadline settings and can go 11 hours on a full charge with heavy use.
I also like the last stable release of CM7.1.0 it is smoking fast and way less issues then the nightlies or kangs to me.

CM7.2 couldn't figure out how to add my Google account. Also couldnt disable the camera shutter sound.
Tried Liberation but the App Data partition is still only 150MB; as soon as I restore my apps its gonna be out of space again.
ALL ROMs for the Incredible are going to have a 150 MB data/data partition. It's the way HTC made it. The only way around it is with the EXT4All mod. More information here. The file you're looking for to remove the limit is "Convert2Ext4_no_data_limit_normal_dalvik.zip".
And there is an options in the CM7 sound settings to disable the shutter sound. Called "Mute camera shutter".
Ok I found the camera sound setting, thanks. Any advice on getting the Google account to work? The Account settings were trying to setup an email thing, not my Google account
EDIT:
Figured out that I need to flash the Google apps pack on CM7 to get that all to work, but ClockworkMod kept failing to mount the pack when I tried to install it. Now I am back on Liberation, because at least here I have my Google account with contacts, but I cannot get the EXT4 fix to work. I download it, open it with Clockwork, tell it to reboot and apply, but it fails to mount it, just like the Google apps pack problem. Using Clockwork 5.0.2.0
