[Q] Would you recommend the G2?

Hello,
I have been wanting to replace my bricked Galaxy S with one of the below smartphones:
- T-Mobile G2
- Nexus One
- HTC Leo/HD2
- Nexus S
The requirements for my selection include:
- The ability to function under the AWS 1700/2100 frequency
- The ability to utilize MicroSD storage (Nexus S fails in this category)
- Have a reasonably good/congenial screen size and resolution
- Have a variety of custom ROMs and modifications
- The ability to use LED notifications
- Have a good build and be considerably capable, perdurable and dependable in terms of both hardware and software (unrelenting to software defects such as bricking, and hardware flaws).
I would be very grateful if you, the owners of the G2, would kindly reflect upon your overall experiences with your device and inform me of the phones pros and cons. I would also be thankfully open to any recommendations regarding my selection.

Okay bro i have both G2 and a Nexus S... I like both phones but in my own opinion i think the nexus S is kinda better. I love Pure stock android

Pros:
Great keyboard
Can use the LED (only if rooted...unless there an app for that)
Cons:
The loose hinge
Screen wobbles due to the screen
The back cover can start peeling its silver metal finish
The matte finish all around the phone can change color over time. (fixable with a case/ i prefer a clear case to show off its sexiness while still being protected)
Using a case causes the matte finish to chip off very tiny pieces. -___-
I kinda want a mytouch4g. I'm not a keyboard user...
You should wait because Galaxy SII, hTc Pyramid, and other great devices are coming out. I suggest you wait a little longer

I don't find the necessity to buy a dual-core phone. I am buying these phones because of their great development also, something that the Galaxy S line lacks.
I personally love HTC Sense UI also, therefore leaning my decision towards buying HTC branded phones. I also want the phones to be reasonably priced (under 450 or so), unlike the new dual cores which may cost more than 600$.

The only reason I got a G2 is because it was free on tmobile.com last month..
Pros:
fast for 800mhz
Keyboard is great (3 quick keys come in handy)
@ and www./.com key is great
Decent size screen
Camera qual is good
4G network
Easily rooted and good custom roms
Hinge isn't as bad as people make it out to be
Froyo is cool for stock
Cons:
Preloaded google apps suck (root to remove)
Battery life (stock)
Network Card isn't that great for 4g service
4rows on keyboard rather than 5 (non dedicated numbers)
Micro-USB port isn't in the best spot
MicroSD slot under battery is annoying
Camera hardward button is a tad laggy
LED is only white (track pad)
Track pad isn't the greatest
Screen wobble is easily fixed by keeping the sides of ur index fingers placed on
the screen edges.
No sense but romable!
The hidden memory lmao
Id recommend moving away from tmobile altogether.
The evo shift is better than this on sprint. Or get a dual core phone

It looks like I have no other option but to go for the HD2. I want to use the phones on Mobilicity/Wind's AWS frequency here in Canada, with their cheap unlimited plans costing a maximum of 45$. Therefore, because the Nexus S has no Ext. SD slot and both Nexus' are equally expensive when bought without a contract, i will have to opt for either the HD2 or the G2; which in this case melodicjunkie's review of the G2 deprecates the device.
The fact that the HD2 is versatile and can run WP7 and Android (Sense, Cyanogen, Gingerbread, Honeycomb) makes it a more worthy selection. However there is some quality of the G2 which still attracts me to it.
I'd go for the Desire HD if it would run on AWS frequency, however I must sigh because it does not.

The G2 is a newer phone than the HD2, so it runs a lot better, especially since it runs Android natively, which the HD2 just really can't compete in terms of actual performance. I have both phones right now, so I speak from experience.
HD2 Pros:
Screen size is sexy, but can be too big for some people at 4.3"
Can run WinMo, WP7, Android, Meego, Ubuntu. Lots of variety.
Lots of development going on, but only a handful for each OS are quality in my opinion.
Cons:
No trackpad/trackball
Older processor
Android is not as smooth as on the G2
No hardware camera button
Boot times are ridiculously long compared to the G2
G2 Pros:
Nearly stock Android 2.2
Newer processor runs faster at 800Mhz than HD2 at 1Ghz
Rooted, the phone can be OC'd ridiculous amounts
Clockspeed for clockspeed, G2 always beats HD2 on all benchmarks
Physical keyboard is one the best I've ever used
Trackpad does its job
Camera button
Not as much dev work as the HD2, but it's growing and it is quality work
CM support. Nuff said.
Cons:
Cannot charge with the phone off. Always goes into recovery. It's annoying.
Trackpad gets a bit wonky under direct incandescent light
Google bloatware, though some of it I do actually use
Hinge is loose, but it doesn't bother me and the screen doesn't wiggle on mine
Not very many LED colors to choose from, even when rooted
Wish it were a 5 row keyboard like the G1
Battery life kinda sucks stock, but rooted, it is greatly improved
Wish the screen were 4", but it is okay where it is
Overall, I began using the G2 daily once I got it and rooted it with CM. Haven't looked back since. The G2 outperforms the HD2 on all aspects for me. It just seems to have a more premium feeling to it because of the extra metal accents on the front of the phone. It feels more solid and seems like it can take more abuse than the HD2 due to a smaller screen size.

The HD2 is outdated and slow.. lol @tazz9690 = if the hd2 boot time is slower than that's sad because the G2 boot time (non rooted) is sloowww lol.
As for recovery charge, that's only when rooted but yes that is annoying.
The G2 is perfectly fine for 100dollars contract.. the highest id pay for this phone (contract or not) is
150 USD. Maybe 200 if I didn't already know how to root and it were rooted. For 0 dollars with contract it was literally a steal, but let's just say if the Evo shift was the same deal ida got that instantly.
Don't get the slow HD2.
If you want tmobile that bad get the mytouch 4 for the front cam.. no keyboard but so what?
Or you can wait for the sidekick 4g (sarcasm) although 1ghz sidekick! Lmao

I actually had the HD2. I currently have the G2 and the Nexus One.
I'd advise against the HD2. I'm currently running the Nexus One with Miui which will partition the sdcard on it own to allow more apps. The first time I used the Nexus One with CM7 I realized that not all my apps from the G2 were gonna fit the Nexus One. The N1 has a very low internal memory as appose to the G2. Again, Miui roms auto partition your sdcard to allow more apps to fix without the hassle of moving them over manually. You can manually partition the sdcard to allow more apps on CM7.
I really like the Nexus One (just bought it). I'm currently using the N1, and what I really like about it is that mostly all types of roms, sense, stock android, CM7, and Miui work flawless.
Keyboard on the G2 is awesome. You can't go wrong with a G2 or an N1.

I never used the N1. I wanted it when it came out but never got it. The N1 is very stable and sleek as for what I've seen and for what I've been told.
Id go with the G2 over the N1. The g2 had a baby and N1 was born.. or the N1 is the younger brother.. either direction you wanna go, get the G2 over the N1.
I'm still saying wait for a dualcore Tmobile..
The phone I really want is the Incredible S

Not a big fan of the keyboard layout of the shift, otherwise I would get it. Can't change that about the phone though.

Even though the N1 came before the G2, so it would literally be impossible for that outcome to be possible. It's more like, the N1 had a son and it turned out to be Chuck Norris. Major upgrade XD

Get a MyTouch4G. Fast processor, 768MB RAM, FFC, lots of development, easy to root. Looks better in real life and feels great in the hand. The black one has soft touch rubber around the sides while the others are just plastic so go for black. You wont regret it, definitely an underrated phone.
It is essentially the DesireHD with a smaller screen (3.8" but still the same resolution).
It meets all your criteria. I think you will be pleased.

I was saying in terms of specs/size? The n1 was a trackball (old gen), no keyboard..
The n1 is a mega mytouch 3g.
Get a mytouch 4 black.

I'm thinking this would be a great choice for you. I picked G2 over it because of the keyboard, but either phone is a great choice. MT4G has a little bit better specs though, since it has more ram and it's CPU is clocked 200mhz higher at stock (that's easily fixed if you root either phone). I'm more than happy with the G2; every phone has it's quirks, and that's why there are so many on the market. IMO this is the best phone on the market with a keyboard, although I haven't tried the Evo Shift yet (same internal hardware as G2/DZ though).

If my G1 were still functional, I'd be using it today even though I would've been due for an upgrade in October..

Of these choices the G2 is what I'd pick but as others have suggested I'd actually recommend the MyTouch 4G.
The G2 keyboard is not that good (compared to the G1 anyways) and thanks to Swype I rarely use it. Since the MT4G doesn't have a keyboard you have more case options.
MT4G is faster
MT4G has physical buttons for home, back & menu unlike the lame soft-keys found on the G2 and most other phones today.
Both have decent custom ROM support

I had a premonition I was going to be asked this question. hah!
I am simply going to wait for the HTC Pyramid or for the Incredible S to decrease in price, then I will make me selection. It feels slightly awkward to purchase a N1 or an HD2 as it would feel somewhat like a downgrade from my previous powerhouse phone, the Galaxy S.
Although I must say that I find it extremely difficult and frustrating to wait for the later smartphone releases (Incredible S, Pyramid). Therefore I am truly lost as to whether I should buy an HTC phone compatible with AWS now, or whether I should wait for future dual-core HTCs.

Look, if you have a phone now: what's the rush? Who knows what kind of bugs these new phones will have. Id rather risk buying a release date kick ass phone, than to buy outdated hardware. Even the sidekick 4g is better than the hd2.. and the sidekick 4g is a freaking joke!
get the pyramid.. I'm getting it to replace the g2, that must tell u sumtin...
Cmon, 8mp cam, front facing one as well.. stocked 1.2 ghz (I do that rooted on g2), you can. only imagine the rooting capabilites on the pyramid.. 2.3ghz overclock?? Maybe, because of the dual core processor and ram..
And to top it off, a phone like that seems odd to have a physical keyboard, which looks sick! The sleak design is amazing, especially the back.

[Q] swap for a droid x2?

I know it is still early in the dinc2 development stages but things are not looking promising. My 14 day Verizon return is creeping up on me.
Should I stick with the dinc2 or trade it in for something else?
The main contender at the moment is the droid x2. From what I have read so far the boot loader is locked. (See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089067). The dual cores, qHD screen and large amount of support for the previous generation are all solid selling points for me.
I have also considered the thunderbolt but have decided against it. There's no LTE in my area yet, the battery life is abysmal, and it is a massive phone.
I am open to other suggestions I have not mentioned as well.
TL;DR: Swap my dinc2 for a droid x2 (or other non-thunderbolt verizon phone)?

I have a dx2 and im thinking of trading it for something else, not sure what i want tho

Despite being dual-core with qHD it's running a weird resolution
Motoblur is so eh to me, everytime I try it in the store it's really slow
The design of the phone is just ugly to me with the really square look and physical buttons

I just received a Droid X2 today and I must say it is the clunkiest phone I have ever used. I cannot believe how much it locks up and how choppy everything is. My Fascinate blows it away.

I wish we had a better root scene over here. The only reason I'm still considering a thunderbolt is because of this. Where is the incredible s in terms of perm root?

dinc 2 is a great phone, however I've also been thinking about trading to the x2 just for the tegra 2 processor and future gingerbread update. that will be a wonderful phone to work with in the future. i'd love to trade someone my dinc 2 for an x2 but i doubt i'll get that lucky..

I implied the combination of Tegra 2 AND Gingerbread, not just the Snapdragon and gingerbread combo of the INC2. T2 / 2.3 will be pretty rad.

In light of this release by HTC: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098489 I have decided to stick with the incredible 2.
It is difficult to see into the future where dual core phones will actually be utilized to their full potential. I just don't see that happening for a while.
The battery life and aesthetics are too appealing to make the switch.

Its really that difficult when no one knows how android will take out of there bag

Nitro a lot of what makes the Fascinate so good is what devs like you corrected in major flaws from Samsung and Verizon.
Can't wait to see permanent root on the DInc2, to see what the dev community can do with this powerhouse.

for a solid week, I was debating between buying a DInc2 or waiting for the Droid X2 to come out. The day the X2 released, I was at my local retailer waiting to buy one and turned out to be the first in my state to purchase one. I set it up, activated it, took it home and played with it for a good 2 hours... then i brought it back to the store and returned it for a DInc2. reason? HTC Sense vs Moto Blur. Blur is horrible in my opinion. its clunky, utilitarian, lacks the visual aesthetics, ease of use, and functionality of HTC sense. syncing facebook contacts was a nightmare on Blur. Sense practically synced for me with barely any user input.
The fit and finish of the Incredible 2 is miles ahead of the bulky clunky case of the X2, and despite the bigger screen, the Inc2's display does not disappoint in any way.
While the X2 has superior hardware, (dual core processor, bigger screen), I would compare it to running Windows XP Home on an Alienware computer. nothing but wasted potential.
I say, unequivocally, just wait until these developers find a way to perm root the Incredible 2, or until HTC does away with their locked bootloaders, and you'll have everything you want in a phone and more.

Return it and wait for the Bionic.

I just got my dx2 a few days ago and I'm happy. Of course blur sucks and slows the phone down to a crawl. I've been reading this is a huge problem but seems to be related to blur. I installed Launcher Pro and for some unknown reason, my phone speed/responsiveness has increased drastically. It no longer freezes or hangs. With that said, here are the pro's/cons in my opinion.
Pros: New screen is awesome, very fast after I installed launcher pro and if the DX2 gets half the attention the DX did, there will be some pretty awesome roms coming out pretty soon.
Cons: I've heard rumors the tegra 2 processor does not play well with 4G LTE and has some issues (but what phone doesn't have any issues. That's why I think they switched to the OMAP4)... No 4G LTE and of coarse the locked bootloader (but the DX got around that pretty good).
In my opinion, the speed, screen and potential for custom ROMS were the selling point.

The low RAM on the X2 is the bottleneck from hell. After blur and the GPU, the RAM available to the phone for use is comparable to the D1. You literally can't multitask on it. I had an X2 and returned it for an Incredible (I wasn't eligible for a 3g phone because it was an early early upgrade).
Software matters a lot and people tend to forget this. Look how much more lightweight Android is than PC Windows. Sometimes a phone with less powerful specs is still faster because of the software. Blur is a resource hog.

Isn't there a perm-root for the X2, you could just install a custom ROM that gives you stock Android.

That's what I LOVE about my inc2, always above 200mb free if not 250-300.

[Q] Jumping ship...replace Evo with Epic Touch?

Anyone else considering this switch? Or perhaps another switch (Photon?)?
I love the amount of development and support for the Evo, but I can only assume the Epic Touch will eventually receive it too.

What do you think will be your deciding factor? Is there something/feature you prefer over one than the other?

I'm always weary about samsung and their support. But that's just my experience with the vibrant when I was on T-Mobile. They both seem like nice phones though. Personally I think I'm gonna stick with htc phones.

I guess my hope there is reliability in developers. After rooting the Evo I think using a device without 'full access' would be frustrating.

Based on my Sammy experience in addition to my wife's Epic and friend's Epic, I'll probably not own a Samsung phone again for a very, very long time.

I will wait and watch the development section and base my decision on that. Both are awesome phones, and can't go wrong with either really. Leaning towards sgs2 because of the screen right now.

I was considering this switch but I'm not sure the SGS2 has anything substantial to offer me for $200 and a 2 year contract extension.

The only real advantage I can see is the processor. SGS2 has dual core 1200 MHz, EVO has single core 1000 MHz (but I have mine overclocked to 1200 MHz). I don't ever seem to be waiting on my EVO to finish tasks or feel it is too slow, so I'm not sure why a dual core processor is needed.
The SGS2 has a bigger screen, but still 480x800. I understand it is Super AM-OLED, vs the EVO 4G color transflective TFT, but I'm not sure that I care about that. I mostly use my phone indoors and have no problems with the dispaly.
It also comes with 16GB onboard, but I already have a 32GB uSD in my EVO.
Radio speeds are the same, EVDO-A and WiMAX.
Cameras are the same 8MP.
SGS2 does 1080p video out vs EVO 720p video out, but I almost never use the video out.
So unless I'm missing something, the SGS2 is not that big a difference for my $200 and 2 year extension.
Likewise the Moto Photon. Advantages, dual core 1000 MHz and 540 x 960 resolution. And GSM world phone possible. GSM is not needed for me either.
I think I'll hang on to my renewal discount and see what comes out in the next 6 months. Perhaps the Nexus Prime will make its way over to Sprint?

You made good choice I am on Verizon so I can't tell you about Sprint's service but 4G should improve a lot for sprint.
I like having it rooted and getting all the updates my friend who has stock is still on 4.0.2 on Verizon he is with me on family plan though hopefully at least sprint does better job =]

What are you regretting? You have a phone that is almost top of the line (Dual instead of Quad core, really not that big of a deal). That will be getting the latest Android releases weeks (Or days) after release compared to months or years. Finally, a phone that will have dev support for it's entire life compared to phones that will only be relevant for maybe a year.

Why do you have buyers remorse about? Is there something you dont like about the phone before you have received it? The GN is a great phone that most love. If you like custom firmware you cant have a better phone or group of devs than this device.

I have a dont reason, I just always second guess myself when I buy a phone. Im coming from an OG Evo and I did the same thing with it but ended up loving it. Ive read so many good things about the epic 4G Touch, I almost went with it but went with the Nexus because its newer...just hoping I made the right decision. Cant wait to get my hands on it and get it rooted.

This phone out performs the touch. And the evo has broken multitasking. This is a great phone. You really can't go wrong with this phone... seriously.

I personally think you made the right choice, remember you have a week with the phone to decide if you like it or if you dont. I bet you will.

I was also second guessing this or the Evo but here are some reasons I took the gnex over the Evo.
1. NO F'ING removable battery. This is a must if I have to endure using it for at least two years. Batteries degrade and it would be useless a year in.
2. LCD not an amoled. I don't like LCD they don't produce colors like our phone and blacks as well. Regardless of everyone saying its good... they must be blind.
3. Sense 4.0 no explanation needed... sense is retarded.
4. Google support. Although limited (cdma) this phone will still receive faster updates.
5. Rootabliltiy. It was soo easy to root and your not limited. For HTC the only way to unlock is to void warranty and even then... you have to worry about hboot versions. No thanks. You may void warranty by unlocking this phone but you can always relock it nor use an exploit to root without unlocking.
All in all this phone is the obvious choice.

How's the radio and signal strength compare to nexus s 4g?
I'm tired of having almost no bars most of the time.

I went from Sprint and the Epic 4G Touch to Verizon and the Galaxy Nexus. I do not regret either move.
Was the E4GT a good phone. Sure was. Is the Galaxy Nexus a better phone. Sure is. There is nothing to regret about the GNEX and I would not buy a phone today on Sprint that is not LTE.
I am sure Sprint will one day change their data plans and go to tiered data when people switch to LTE phones. If you get in now with unlimited LTE, you should at least be safe until you complete your contract. Then at that point they will either allow you to grandfather it because you already have an LTE device or they can pull what Verizon will be pulling.....
Also, why buy a phone with Wimax when Sprint no longer building it out. What you see is what you get. Nothing improving on that end.
Only other phone I would even look at for comparison is the SGS3. Then it comes down to Pure ICS or Touchwiz. Either way, you will still end up with a great phone.
One thing I can say with owning a GNEX is I don't feel the need to purchase every new phone announced which is a big thing compared to every other phone I have owned. There is something about owning a Nexus device that makes you not care what other phones have.....Really cannot explain it but you need to own one to understand.
Only thing I wished was the GNEX had the camera from the SGS2. Then this thing would be perfect but, in this world nothing is perfect so you need to settle to the closest thing!

You won't regret it. I switched from the Sprint E4GT to the VZW GNex and haven't regretted either move at all. Like eman3316 said, I have not wanted to rush out and buy every new phone on the market since owning the GNex, which is something I can't say for any other device I've owned including the Nexus S. I always wanted the next better phone to come out, but I no longer spend unnecessary money on unnecessary phones.

I don't understand people on this thread at all. Yes I definitely love my Nexus but I'd much rather have the EvoLTE. I'll give you some reasons why you shouldn't have gotten the Nexus and maybe you can rethink.
1. AMOLED screen. Amazing right? Eh...not anymore. I've had two replacements, the first of which had awful banding and a purple tint at low brightness. Also, the image of the status bar and keyboard were permanently burnt into the screen. While the screen is sharp, it definitely can't best the new Evo due to its full RBG matrix. The colors are uneven and look "dirty" at low brightness. A post on the first page said that color reproduction was better?? Nope, more saturated but not better. AMOLED used to be touted as power efficient but with this huge screen it is the opposite. These reasons are why the EvoLTE wins the screen comparison.
2. Camera...not much to say here. The camera on this thing absolutely blows. My girlfriends OG Evo takes better shots. I think the camera on the 4S still has a slight advantage over any other Android handset but the EvoLTE is right up there and could probably be improved with new software releases.
3. While the CPU/GPU combo isn't by any means slow, the S4 is faster by a mile and is more power efficient. It handles the 720p resolution like a champ. Whenever I go back to stock 4.0.2 my Gnex definitely has hiccups and lags compared to my current setup.
4. Due to CDMA licensing, Samsung has crappy software for CDMA radios. Everyone talks about how a new software update or radio will help but it never does. Its no use, Samsung just has crappy radio support. If you like dropped connections and fluctuating signal then the Gnex is for you.
Now I seem to hate the Gnex huh? Not really. I'm just simply stating the truth and that I believe the new Evo is a better investment. If the Gnex was $99 that would be a different story. Quick software updates can be nice but I'm on Verizon so I don't know what that's like.

I switched from the Evo 3D to the VZW GNex...at first I wasn't sure if I really wanted to switch from Sprint...but once I got onto the LTE network...those doubts QUICKLY went away. I thought about getting the Sprint GNex...but the loss of 4G for an extended period of time didn't sit well with me, especially since Sprint's 3G network practically sucks.
I can see that being the only drawback of getting it on Sprint.

1. This amoled... needs tweaking... when the rgb and gama are tweaked in ROMS it is perfect... i have perfected it anyways... i do agree this amoled is off. But that LCD is crap... i dont like blacklit things... my LCD tv has two giant burn ins so it doesnt just happen to amoleds.
2.This camera is f'ing amazing.. your f'ing blind... go check out the post pictures from your gnex thread... your jaw will drop. The og evo... no just no...

Duh what do you expect... this phone is not built for preformance it is meant for openess... having a closed architecture processor such as the S4 is pointless just wait... it will be 6 months before that thing sees the light of day of the next android version. Where it will be sitting on our front door when it comes out.
4. I dont agree... this is all on location... if you live in a place that is known for crappy service then yes it will drop more than other phones. If you live in a place with "normal" signal then you have nothing to worry about.
The gnex is the better phone all around... the HTC is for the fanboys of HTC not us.

I definitely understand what you coming from the evo LTE is a good looking device but sense kills it for me plus having own evos in the past besides group they take like 8 months to release the new updat and ain't detailing with that anymore plus stock ICS is the best OS yet for android and jellybean will be game changer and unless you wanted 6-8 months later go for the evo the camera in this phone is just right I take pics only for sharing on Facebook to my family and there good enough sure is not the best but look at the pluses on this phone

Your experiences with SGS III

Hello All,
I've mostly lurked on the forums and found a lot of information related to Android as well as various phones. I'm not a noob and have flashed ROMs, radios etc. and know a bit about Android and Android devices in general.
Now to the reason for the thread. My wife is eligible for an upgrade and wants to get rid of her Inspire 4G due to various issues. She would like to get an SGS III but I want to ensure that is the correct choice before proceeding. I had previously looked at the Motorola Atrix HD (discarded due to only 8 GB of storage and no ability to save apps to SD in ICS and beyond) and the LG Optimus G (still thinking of this). I would like the opinion of the helpful people on XDA regarding the following points pertaining to the SGS III since it's been out for a while now. Any opinions you can provide would be very much appreciated.
1. Signal (not had a good experience with signal on the Inspire 4G - lots of dropped calls. We live in an area that doesn't have the best signal but it has been ok on other phones that we own)
2. Battery life (again not a good experience on Inspire 4G). I'm aware of the extended battery available but would like an idea of the stock battery life that can be expected
3. Screen readability, especially in sunlight (this was not one of the cons on the Inspire 4G but is based on reviews indicating that the SGS III doesn't go as high in brightness as other phones)
4. Touchwiz (She prefers the stock AOSP interface - Cfx ROM - running on her phone currently over Sense and I haven't played with Touchwiz yet to figure out pros/cons)
Any personal feedback that you can provide on the SGS III based on your time using it would be much appreciated. Please note that I do not intend to flash ROMs on the phone since this is going to be her daily driver and I would rather keep it stock (at least in the beginning ).

I would say you are correct about deciding against the Motorola. I looked at the LG but have read some really bad things about the phone. When I was in the store the ATT employees confirmed that its not that good of a device.
I can say that the GS3 is IMO the best phone you can buy for ATT. The battery life for me is good, the screen is nice and you can make it bright if you are in direct sun. If you search a little you can see a lot of bad comments about the LG screen. The GS3 out of the box is fast and is a very capable phone even without a custom ROM. I disabled a lot of the bloat and stuff I would never use and I am impressed with the phone.
If she can wait, I would say hold off for about 3 months. We should start seeing the new 2013 LG, Sony and Galaxy S4 here very soon. Most, if not all will have a 1080p screen, better battery life, lower power consuming 8 core or quad core processor, etc.
A lot of people speculate these to arrive this summer May-June months specifically. Would be a shame to burn up her 2 year agreement now when a lot of new toys are right around the corner.

iceman - I appreciate your feedback. I was thinking the same thing considering all the recent processor announcements (Tegra 4, Exynos 5, Qualcomm 800 series etc.) and the rumors about the GS IV, LG's next big thing, 1080p screens etc. I'm just not sure she would like the 5"+ screens those are expected to have. I'll ask her to hold out for a few more months. Even if she doesn't like those, they should make the GS III fall in price, at the least.

best phone spec wise is probably the galaxy note 2 followed by the galaxy s3 . the blackberry is worth a look to i find it feels cheap and has small screen. Id wait for march-april thats when most of the tech seems to come out. theres tons of new ones coming out soon id wait for the galaxy s4(Exynos 5 Octa is a chipset manufactured on ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture, packing four Cortex A15 cores at 1.8 GHz for the tasks requiring a lot of processing power and four 1.2 GHz ARM A7 cores for the basic tasks, which are supposed to improve the battery life. )

My personal feelings towards the Galaxy S3 are overwhelmingly positive but mostly after rooting and playing with various ROMs and kernels and finding the right balance of things. I do favor the TouchWiz interface over Sense and even over stock AOSP but not necessarily the stock TouchWiz. I don't know whether or not you'll be rooting the device and customizing things but if I had to deal with the phone stock I'd probably have been happier with my previous 4S.
Battery life is very solid now that I've changed kernels and ROMs and found the right mix of settings. The stock battery life didn't impress me greatly but it wasn't the worst I'd seen by far and given it's capabilities was probably right in line with what I should expect. I'm actually very surprised by how great my battery life is now that I'm running DeviantKernel on Wicked ROM with the settings I've chosen.
Hopefully that helps some.

I think that's only accurate with the international version. I don't know where the OP is located but in the US, and possibly elsewhere, the S3 has the Qualcomm cpu instead of the Exynos if I'm not mistaken which would put the One X ahead of it technically. Best phone I've ever used.

My wife and I both got sg3's together. Mine is now running Task's ROM and my wife's is still stock. She loves it just the way it is, and i am fine with that, now i won't have to be constantly flashing hers or hear her complain about glitches, she uses it for news, Facebook and gossip mags and texting. Stock Is fine for all that. I honestly don't know many people who actually talk much on their phones anymore, and if that is the case, then screen size is important. I don't know how all these girls stare at their tiny iphone screens.

Thanks for providing your feedback. All of the responses suggest that I can't go wrong with the GS III. Glad to know that Touchwiz is better than Sense. I didn't even consider the One X due to the improper priority setting for the Sense UI over all the other running apps. But as some others have suggested in this thread, since new phones are coming out I'll wait a couple of months before making the decision. Her phone is now running stable with the AOSP Jelly Bean ROM provided by the CodefireX team so I think I can afford to wait.

You may be right for the processor speed but the no SD card no removable cover (iphone model) and I just feel Samsung makes a better product IMO.

I heard great reviews about the audio quality of international S3. Does the ATT model and international have different audio chip's?

I loved the ext SD card and also with 64 GB support, that was a buying point for me. Removable battery, hardware home button.

I love mine and got one for my wife this past Christmas. She had the atrix and didn't like the size of the s3. Now she can't put it down.

Look honestly plain and simple
The GS3 is enjoyable even with TW.. 2Gs of ram makes this butter smooth with TW. And that says alot
(And for those who come and whine and say 'boo it doesn't AOSP rocks' this is just an opinion with MY personal experience)
I have a hard time deciding which ROM to use.. I have a nandroid of TW and AOSP just to switch back and forth...
No dropped calls, excellent signal and good reception.
Battery is amazing even with stock TW
Screen is amazing and I have no trouble seeing it even with brightness turned all the way down.
TW has its benefits over AOSP as does AOSP does over TW.
In over all its a HUGE step up from a Desire and blows the Optimus out the water in my opinion.
Easy to root easy to fix if you're soft bricked and good ROM choices.
I came from a Galaxy Note and this puts it in the DUST... I wouldn't have any other phone

I own a note and an s3 and I agree that the s3 is way better.
so much smoother and faster

S2 was my first smart phone before that I had flip phones no text no nothing. For a skyrocket it's only ok. S2 was amazing and best of what was out but with hardware I'd issues bad drivers and just Samsung sucking I think s3 could been the best again and wasn't. I'm disappointed in how much better it could be. It's great phone I love it. I don't protect it just good warranty no issues. But Samsung sucks. They got billions and can't release a driver to work with Windows.that just upsets me a lot. It's pathetic. Because of Samsung the s3 is only even player of the game not the leader as it should be and could be. Laziness isn't excitable for a billion dollar company or being cheap. Christ I wish could beat up the guy who released last drivers.

I just came over from t-mobile and had an HTC Amaze lovely phone but sense was terrible and it killed the battery almost instantly. I had to purchase additional batteries to pop in whenever I went anywhere.
I have had the SGIII from AT&T for about a month now, and it is still stock, I haven't even rooted it... I probably will one day when I'm bored but for now I'm happy. The battery life is like 100x better than my amaze was stock and the screen is bigger as well. I also get a lot better signal with AT&T than I did with T-Mobile. I can actually use my phone at work now! As for the touchwiz, I already own Apex Pro and SSLauncher so I didn't keep touchwiz as the default for long. I am too "nerdy" when it comes to customizing. The bluetooth works flawlessly in my car for making phone calls and listening to podcasts and music. The camera works great, and I like how it flashes first then flashes again to try to prevent people from blinking. Also the SGIII is one of the few phones that still comes with a wired headset.. it's the small things that count
I recommend you do NOT get the LG. I have the LG Optimus from t-mobile at home and it can't even do app2sd nor can I root it to add apps2sd. I was going to install a bunch of games on it for my 6-year-old to play on, but 3 games in I got the "storage full" message. It's going to ebay and I'm gonna get her a tablet or chromebook instead.

The S3 was/is my first android device and I love it. Coming from an iPhone, expandable storage and a removable battery are very welcome. The screen size feels great and looks great as well. I kept touchwiz on it for about a month before I rooted it and flashed a new rom. For the most part TW was ugly as sin and frustrating.
