I have read a lot of forums about rooting the slide, but mostly all of them talk about flashing custom roms. I would like to just obtain root so I can delete the unneeded extras tmobile packed in, and be able to download certain apps that need root access. is there a way to keep su access on the slide, or is that not available yet? If you can't point me in the right direction, that would be awesome. Thanks.

Hey guys, I plan to root my 3G Slide with this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754669
However, I would like to know if it's possible to load Cynogenmod 5 or 6 on it before proceeding. Thanks
It seems so. The intructions say to have a ROM of your liking on the SDCard to flash. I've had root since the original method so I won't test. The article seem to answer you question though. I don't see the point in creating a new Topic

Regardless of how you root, you can load whatever ROM you want.

The only method I recommend for rooting is nbetcher's method, search the dev forum for it if you want. CM6 is the most current version for the Slide, why would you want CM5?
Also in the future questions should be posted in Q/A not development

I agree with cingall. I was one with problems getting the loop method to work consistantly, and the one you linked seems to be a chopped up version of nbethcers. I've rooted twice now using nbetchers method without issue and was originally running cyanogenmod.

Yeah I could never get the loop to work either it would never recognize my device in ADB. Luckily I stumbled across a post on Cyanogenmod's Slide forum that had an exploid root guide and that is how I finally rooted.
Nbetchers root method is definitely easier. In order to get the other method to work you have to unplug usb and loop then boot recovery but plug it back in before recovery pops up. It's really annoying. But to answer your question you should definitely load whatever rom you want onto the root of your SD card before rooting and then at the end you can flash it.
Hey everyone,
I am a super noob....wondering a few things....
1. Is it possible to root my evo without a PC? I do not own one and my phone is my only source of internet.
2. If so how? And is their any detailed how to's for such a thing...step by step.....possibly even noob proof
3. Assuming I can and I get it rooted what would you recommend next? I can maybe use someones comp from work so this question is essential
Sorry if this has been posted before, but forums can be such a chore when on a mobile
Look forward to your help and incite....cptcave

Hmmm....as far as I know you would need a computer to root fje phone, I haven't seen a way to do it without it. Of course I could be wrong here.
If you could borrow a friends computer you should be fine. Just search the forum and you'll find some great threads on how to root. I did mine after it first came out so im not too familiar with the newer simpler versions on how to do it.
Hope this was of some help.

Yes,J asonK75 is right. As far as I know, you do need a computer to fully root & unlock Nand.
Loads of threads for step by step instructions.
The advantages of rooting are basically that you can install certail apps (Wifi tether, Titanium Backup) which require root access to work. Furthermore, rooting gives you ability to install custom roms and theme your phone.
Hope this answeres all your questions.
Agreed. I could not imagine being on the stock Sense ROM anymore. I love CM ROMs and I like the fact that I can try others like MIUI and Liquid too. Themes are worth it right there, not to mention custom kernals and different transitions. Plus we might have GB before the official release of it!

I'm trying to root my friends mytouch 3g slide and I'm stuck. I've searched the forum for all related issues and have received no answers.
I'm at this step in the rooting process:
5.Issue the following command: adb push exploid /sqlite_stmt_journals. Note: It MUST be in that directory - NO exceptions.
At this step I keep getting failed to copy 'exploid' to '/sqlite_stmt_jurnals' : Read-only file system.
The phone is in charge only and debugging mode is on. Also the cmd is in admin mode. I'm not sure what else I could be doing wrong. Please let me know..the mt4g was not this difficult.
what guide are you following?
by any chance are you on the latest update for it too? the new RUU update that came out
I am on the newest update unfortunately. It's buggy as hell actually in my opinion. That's why my friends wants it rooted and on cyanogen 7.
I'm using this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754020
Is there a better one in your opinion. I never had this issue rooting my G1, Nexus One, or my MT4G.
the newest ruu(froyo) hboot cant be rooted as far as i know you may have to downgrade, then use that guide
There's a thread in the development section that shows u how to root the slide if u upgraded to the new software. I agree it is buggy as hell an nothing worked right.

Ok so i really been trying to root my mytouch slide for the past 2 weeks. I haven't had any success, just been having all kinds of Errors. I'ved tried every rooting method out there for this device. Even the "ULTRA EASY ROOTER" method failed me. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and attempted to root the phone in 4 different computers and 3 different operating systems. I just don't get it. I know as of right now (5/10/2011) there isn't any root apk for the slide and its probably a little too much to ask for. But can someone please release a apk that can root the mytouch slide the latests ota? It'll really help and make people like me happy. Thanks in advanced.
If you have the latest OTA you are kind of screwed. It was posted many times not to update if you want to keep root. As of now, there is 1 and only 1 way to get root with the official OTA.
And how is that?

Thank you
Thank you so much !!!!!
I now have root
Glad I could help, welcome to the root community.
I'm currently attempting to procure a mt3gs on ebay so I can install CM7 and see how it performs possibly to root/install on my current phone.
With this in mind, I have only a vague understanding of the root/flash procedure but here's my question.
After installing CM, can I "unroot" on the CM image and run fine? I'd like to have the CM rom, but I would like the security of not having the phone "rooted".
If I'm off base and misunderstanding, please fill me in.

In order to run or maintain a custom ROM on your phone, it needs to remain rooted. Pretty simple really.

Thanks for the info on that. But with regard to being "rooted" what does that mean for the application security? if an application requests su can it do that without my express permission or is it just granted?
I guess what I'm concerned about (and this is due to lack of understanding of root) is that if I install application X that is legitimate, can application Y which may be, shall we say, questionable, gain access to the file system owned by application X?
If there is a FAQ on this I apologize and would greatly appreciate any link pointing to such.
Google is your friend. With that out of the way, the SU apps will ask you if an app is allowed permissions or not. Many apps require root for various reasons depending on what you plan on doing with the phone. If you are concerned about an apps permissions look them over before downloading. I find that the basic user will most likely only use the root aspect to simply gain access to custom roms. Though with root you can download apps that block ads on your phone and remove unwanted apps as well. There is a lot more root does but those would be basic functions root access can do.
