I would like to be able to quickly toggle whether the phone uses wireless networks for location. It seems to be a battery drainer to have it on all the time but going into settings every time I wanna use something like Foursquare is very annoying. Actually, the same goes for "Background Data" which also drains my phone quickly but I can't find a toggle for. Any suggestgions?

Wigle WiFi displays available networks and even incorporates it on a map to view the AP (I think that what the map is for)

Folks,
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with automatic WiFi switching apps? Basically after something that works on the desire with froyo. What I want it to do is poll the available WiFi networks every so often (say hourly) to see if my home network is avaiable, and connect if it is.
What do the demon hordes of xda suggest to try, or avoid?

Tasker is a app that can do that, and much more.

On there site you can download it, try it for a week and if you like it buy it. It's a rater expensive app but it has a lot of possibilities. There is also a market version but that has no trial.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into it. Do you use this? If so, what for? Looks like there's tonnes of ability that I don't think I'd use.
Any other auto WiFi experience out there?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yeah it's true that for only wifi on at home it's a expensive app but i don't know any other ones.
And yes I use it, for now i have:
Wifi at home
Flight mode on, auto sync off and low brightens at night
5 minutes before my alarm goes off i turn flight mode off, brightness to auto again, wifi on and autosync back on
GPS turns on when opening maps or navigation
When there is a appointment in my school calendar my phone goes on vibrate during that time
When i open my terminal emulator it prompts the keyboard input method
This is after two weeks of using the app and there are a lot more possibility, they also have a wiki with example apps and some tutorials you can look at.
Y5 battery will do it for your home network, on market.
My EVO
I thought the Desire automatically does this with no 3rd party apps? All the OP is saying that they want to connect to a WiFi connection when it's available (as opposed to performing some action).
Or did I miss something??

I suspect that the OP wants an app that switches off WiFi, and only switches it on again when in range of a "known" WiFi network.
This is essentially what Y5 does - it only works if you have a cellular signal at that location, and basically when the WiFi network connection is lost it looks at the cell id and if it has changed turns WiFi off. When you get back into range of that cell again, it will switch WiFi back on again.

Hey Guys,
Any programs that'll toggle the WiFi on or off based on my location (e.g, save my work location in the program so that it knows to turn on WiFi when I get to work).
Search for "locale", by "two forty four" in the market. It's a paid app, but do many other things beyond that.... you can automatically set almost everything based in location...

At $10, I'd like to see other opinions on the Locale app. Anyone here use it?
Yes, look for home wifi, it does just that.
Very simple to use.

Juice defender can control wifi usage based on location. Also uses mobile signal to pinpoint location instead of gps so saves your battery too!!
I picked a Verizon GNex at BB yesterday and have a couple questions...
First, I don't see where to turn GPS ON/OFF -- there has to be a way to turn it off and on -- right?
Second, after installing the apps I had with my Evo I attempted to purchase another app but the "Accept & Buy" button to complete the purchase would not work. I tried this with two different apps. Is Verizon trying to prevent use of the Google Market so they can have you go through there app market?
Thanks,
Brian

I saw that but it's not like any of those option clearly the GPS on/off. The three options:
Googles location service (lets apps use location data from wifi sources etc)
GPS satellites (lets apps pinpoint your location)
Location & Google search (lets Google use your location to improve search results)
OK, of the three the second one seems closest to what I'm looking for but there's nothing here that clearly says it turns the GPS on/off.
Brian
It does turn it off

come on man, isn't it odvious that is this option? "GPS satellites"

Actually no! As I said, it's the most likely option but no where does it say that the GPS radio is turned off it just says that is "lets apps pin point your location". Everyone wants to know where you are at all times so they make it more difficult for you to turn off location finding tools because they want you to leave it on.
So, Google may allow you to disable GPS access for third party apps but still permit them (Google) to know exactly where you are because that information is money. If disabling this option stopped third party apps from accessing the GPS but still left the GPS on so Google could keep tracking you the wording of the option gives them the legal latitude to do just that.
So, in addition to wanting to save battery life it's nice to also limit the amount of tracking Google, and pretty much everyone else, does to you.
My Evo 4G had a widget that controlled: 4G (WiMax), BlueTooth, GPS and Wifi -- I would like that on my Nexus.
Brian
It's pretty obvious to me that that option actually does turn off the GPS antenna. It I don't think that there's any device in the world with a GPS antenna that cannot be turned off, unless it's part of the core functionality (e.g. with GPS receivers).
Put the power control widget on one of your homescreens - the middle one is GPS and you can quickly toggle it.

All the toggle in that widget does is turn "option 2" on and off. There is no 4G LTE toggle either. Also, no Verizon isn't blocking the market to force you to use theirs. They don't even have a separate app market.

Yep, after toggling I checked back and option 2 was turned off. It was the most likely option but I wish the wording was more explicit...
I also found that the market problem was somehow related to the fact that I'd added a second gmail account. I had to select the second account and enter my CC info there and after that the market worked just fine.

Anyone have a work around to make the Verizon WiFi Auto-On app work? I have a VZW Galaxy Nexus, but I get an error when opening the app that states the app is only for VZW customers.

I dont think it supports ICS. I use Llama to do my home/work/away settings. Very good app been using it since I got an android phone.
I have been trying the Verizon Wifi app as well.
I gave up.
I kept looking and found Auto Wifi Enabler that seems to work on pretty much the same premise at Verizon's app - it turns your wifi on and off based on location and saved networks.
I'm not sure what happened but it isn't showing up in the Market or my App List but it is on my phone right now. Very strange.

Started using Llama with an auto wifi off app, and it is really helping my battery lots. This also adds peace of mind for ringers and other issues...
Agreed on Llama. Downloaded it to use for Wifi on/off at home and have since found a wide variety of uses for it including disabling screen timeout and adjusting brightness while charging vs. running on battery, automatic ringtone/volume adjustment based on locations and time of day, etc.
It uses cell towers to determine your location (not GPS) and doesn't appear to add much to battery drain. If anything, the automatic Wifi and screen brightness/timeout rules do more to conserve battery than the program would add in overhead.

The VZW app is linked in the OP. Auto Wifi Enabler does not seem to be in the market any longer.
On of the top battery eater app - Google+
I've just found that Google+ app was eating most of my phone's battery.
Currently I have FB21 rooted stock rom on my phone and I found that Google+ was the most heavy battery using app whenever the instant upload option is turned on.
Whenever you install the current stock rom (rooted or not), by default, Google+ instant upload option is turned on. So, if you take any pictures or video, Google+ will try to upload all of your pictures and videos in the background.
If you are in the area where the signal is good, the uploading would be finished really quick but you're in the bad reception area, then this process will use most of your battery.
Be ware of this app and you need to check this option is turned on.
How-to enable or disable google+ instant upload:
1. Open Google+
2. Click menu and select settings
3. From Photo settings, check or un-check the 'Turn on Instant Upload'
Depending on your preference, you may keep this option turned on, be sure that you're in good reception area
To avoid battery drain, you may use the batch and bulk 'instant upload' option when your phone is plugged in AC outlet or USB port.
1. Open Google+
2. Click menu and select settings
3. Click on 'Upload now'
I hope this information may extend your battery life a little or more.
Thanks for reading!
i thought this was rather obvious. Any app that has some type of background monitoring/running functions is going to run your battery down. Disable all that superfluous crap, disable any auto update checking or notification checking.
G+ has been a known thing for awhile. Sadly it used to not be as bad when it was first released but it has gotten worse over time. I didn't run it for long on the ICS builds (only cause I didn't run ICS very long) but from what I saw it looked like it was working better there (ie took less battery life)
a, bro...I appreciate you posting this. Sometimes we need to be reminded of stuff like this. Im glad you were thinking of others. Keep up the good work!

I believe there is an option to only upload when connected to wifi. This really helps to minimize upload times and allows you to keep this feature.

Do you mean 'location history' in Google maps?
If you mean location history, I see that location history is disabled by default (stock rom).

Yes, you are right. Thanks for clarification.
There are two options under 'Turn on Instant Upload'.
- Over Wi-Fi or mobile network
- Over Wi-Fi only
By default over Wi-Fi only is turned on.
