[Q] automatic WiFi, any good apps?

Folks,
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with automatic WiFi switching apps? Basically after something that works on the desire with froyo. What I want it to do is poll the available WiFi networks every so often (say hourly) to see if my home network is avaiable, and connect if it is.
What do the demon hordes of xda suggest to try, or avoid?

Tasker is a app that can do that, and much more.

On there site you can download it, try it for a week and if you like it buy it. It's a rater expensive app but it has a lot of possibilities. There is also a market version but that has no trial.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into it. Do you use this? If so, what for? Looks like there's tonnes of ability that I don't think I'd use.
Any other auto WiFi experience out there?

Yeah it's true that for only wifi on at home it's a expensive app but i don't know any other ones.
And yes I use it, for now i have:
Wifi at home
Flight mode on, auto sync off and low brightens at night
5 minutes before my alarm goes off i turn flight mode off, brightness to auto again, wifi on and autosync back on
GPS turns on when opening maps or navigation
When there is a appointment in my school calendar my phone goes on vibrate during that time
When i open my terminal emulator it prompts the keyboard input method
This is after two weeks of using the app and there are a lot more possibility, they also have a wiki with example apps and some tutorials you can look at.

Y5 battery will do it for your home network, on market.

I thought the Desire automatically does this with no 3rd party apps? All the OP is saying that they want to connect to a WiFi connection when it's available (as opposed to performing some action).
Or did I miss something??

I suspect that the OP wants an app that switches off WiFi, and only switches it on again when in range of a "known" WiFi network.
This is essentially what Y5 does - it only works if you have a cellular signal at that location, and basically when the WiFi network connection is lost it looks at the cell id and if it has changed turns WiFi off. When you get back into range of that cell again, it will switch WiFi back on again.

Is there an app that automatically disables and re-enables wifi on a set scheudle?

I use "Wifi Auto Toggle" now to turn wifi on/off when I forget about it, but I have a problem where my wireless will randomly get stuck "authenticating" with my school's WPA network so it will appear to be connected without any problems, but you won't be able to access the internet with it. This means that Wifi Auto Toggle won't think to disconnect it, so it will sit there until I pick up my phone and realize that I need to reconnect. Any suggestions are welcome!

You can use tasker to turn the wifi on and off depending on time, location, whether the phone is plugged in, etc. It's confusing at first but it works wonders!!

I'd prefer an app that isn't $6... Also, it just needs to toggle the wifi on a set schedule (say, every 15 minutes). That way I could easily turn it on or off depending on where I am.

Saw an app call Modus Operandi in the main app forum that might do what you want (kind of a free Tasker alternative). I use Tasker though so I don't know how well this app works...

I was using CT scheduler on my Hero and that worked really well but it since loosks to have dropped from the market....

Modus Operandi works perfectly. Exactly what I needed.

I know your sorted now but was trawling web for top rooted apps and came accross this link......

Juice defender....ive used the free one before but ultimate looks to have more features...if your after just a scheduler MO is fine but this might also help actively conserve that vital bit of power at the same time....just a thought?

[Q] Market and GPS questions...

I picked a Verizon GNex at BB yesterday and have a couple questions...
First, I don't see where to turn GPS ON/OFF -- there has to be a way to turn it off and on -- right?
Second, after installing the apps I had with my Evo I attempted to purchase another app but the "Accept & Buy" button to complete the purchase would not work. I tried this with two different apps. Is Verizon trying to prevent use of the Google Market so they can have you go through there app market?

I saw that but it's not like any of those option clearly the GPS on/off. The three options:
Googles location service (lets apps use location data from wifi sources etc)
GPS satellites (lets apps pinpoint your location)
Location & Google search (lets Google use your location to improve search results)
OK, of the three the second one seems closest to what I'm looking for but there's nothing here that clearly says it turns the GPS on/off.

Actually no! As I said, it's the most likely option but no where does it say that the GPS radio is turned off it just says that is "lets apps pin point your location". Everyone wants to know where you are at all times so they make it more difficult for you to turn off location finding tools because they want you to leave it on.
So, Google may allow you to disable GPS access for third party apps but still permit them (Google) to know exactly where you are because that information is money. If disabling this option stopped third party apps from accessing the GPS but still left the GPS on so Google could keep tracking you the wording of the option gives them the legal latitude to do just that.
So, in addition to wanting to save battery life it's nice to also limit the amount of tracking Google, and pretty much everyone else, does to you.
My Evo 4G had a widget that controlled: 4G (WiMax), BlueTooth, GPS and Wifi -- I would like that on my Nexus.

It's pretty obvious to me that that option actually does turn off the GPS antenna. It I don't think that there's any device in the world with a GPS antenna that cannot be turned off, unless it's part of the core functionality (e.g. with GPS receivers).

Put the power control widget on one of your homescreens - the middle one is GPS and you can quickly toggle it.

All the toggle in that widget does is turn "option 2" on and off. There is no 4G LTE toggle either. Also, no Verizon isn't blocking the market to force you to use theirs. They don't even have a separate app market.

Yep, after toggling I checked back and option 2 was turned off. It was the most likely option but I wish the wording was more explicit...
I also found that the market problem was somehow related to the fact that I'd added a second gmail account. I had to select the second account and enter my CC info there and after that the market worked just fine.

Best Tasker alternative for galaxy Nexus.

I bought Tasker a long time ago, but at some point just kind of gave up on it. Cm7 had a quiet time thing I liked and without it I thought I'd try it again. Unfortunately it's very complicated to get working the way I want it, I'm looking for suggestions.
Here's what I'd like:
Turn wifi on and Bluetooth off at home,
Turn off wifi and turn Bluetooth on when I leave.
Make phone silent at night.
Turn 4G off at work.
My main requirements are that it needs to be more accurate than cell towers so my Bluetooth doesn't turn off when I drive around town. (wifi detect works ok on llama) My main goal is to save battery. I know Tasker can do all these, but it is complicated and I'd like something simpler.

Maybe Locale? Don't know if it will silence your phone based on time of day, but it should accomplish the rest on your list.

Use NFC Tasker (much simpler than Tasker) and some NFC tags...

Timeriffic will do all of that based on times. Other than Locale I don't know of many apps that work the same way.

You can even make it work with cellular location instead of GPS Location. Was quite good when i tried it a while back, but i hate running services (all of those location-based apps are running as services in the background) so i ended up doing everything manually.

+1 for this, I have used it for a long time and works great. based on time of day.
I have 1 setting for driving to work, then 1 for when I get to work. Antoerh when I leave work and drive home, next for when I get home. Then anther for sleeping.
Different ones for weekdays (work) and weekends.

There is one called "automateit", free and pro version. I bought it but don't remember much about it. Something made me go back to tasker.

Have you tried using the Maps profile addons with Llama? It works pretty good. When you use it with combanation with the cell towers that it has learned.

I have a simliar setup as you. It works great.
When I am in the neighborhood turn on wifi (as I visit friends with wifi as well)
When I leave the neighborhood turn off wifi
at a certain time on the weekdays and weekends it turns the ringer down and eventually off
weekdays and certain time it goes to airplane mode.
Then of course it all goes back to normal before I am awake.
A few other rules as well depending if I am at a family members house or a friends store/work.
So I end up saving a little bit of battery and not being woken up by mail/txt notifications :-D
You have to fiddle wit Llama a bit more then the others that's the only down side for some people who might not get it.

Llama is not flaky at all. I was using on SGS and now on the GN and it works great.
Use cel tower locations and times together, or you can just use times.
Eg. at work 8am-5pm silent
at home 7am-10pm loud, wifi on
at home 10pm-7am quiet mode
Works great. Only issue at times is when/if new cel towers arrive. You have to occasionally train or manual tag the cel towers.
Very easy to use app IMO but if you just want time based profiles you can use something easier. We have RAM to spare, the service is not intensive and never shows up on my battery use list. It can toggle/change many settings if you want.

+1 for automateit.

I'm going to give llama another shot. My big thing is that cell towers are not accurate enough and wifi polling wasn't working right. I set polling on, but changed the interval to never and it seems to be working.
If not I'll give automatit a shot.

On a related note, I'm after an app which will allow me to set reminders based on my location, using cell towers rather than GPS. Just something which will remind me to pick up milk when I'm in town, nothing more.

I have gave up using Tasker since they increased there price without any sense.
Also they got few bugs but couldn't fix
So I moved on to app Called Smart Volume Control
It's Actually pretty impressive application with lot of features on it.

[GUIDE] (Free) Mobile Hotspot aka Wifi Tethering

I believe there may be some noobs on XDA, like myself, who did not know how to set up wifi tethering after root. Here's a quick rundown.
1. ROOT your phone (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756885)
2. Go to Playstore and download "Wifi tether for ROOT users" (****EXCEPTION BELOW)
3. IMPORTANT!!! go to the app's setting and set the "Change Device Profile" to "GENERIC ICS"
4. there is no step 4.
Save yourself some $$$ instead of paying Verizon a service that should have been free to start off with. :victory:
EDIT: **** buhohitr mentions that you can achieve wifi tethering WITHOUT ROOT through the playstore app "FoxFi"
ENJOY!!!!!

Well... I figured it'll get the most views in the development section so here it is. One thing I might change is getting this in the "Guide" category

Just a note: I've been using this app with really inconsistent results using generic ics profile and auto setup. I've only been able to detect the wifi twice. I read somewhere that turning wifi tether on, let it start up, turn it off, reboot phone, and start up tethering again works somehow. I just tried it and it worked right away but this is only once. I don't know if this will work consistently 100% of the time though

best wifi tethering is just down load Foxfi from the market, installed and bang work like a champ..very reliable.Foxfi work with root and without root.

Thanks, that was a lot easier than I'm used to. Wifi tether worked the first time, and I turned it off and on a few times and it worked everytime.

Because it doesn't work for crap. I set mine as a galaxy nexus for CDMA/LTE and it works flawlessly.

This is the correct way to do it. choose "galaxy nexus for CDMA/LTE"
also, do not forget to check "routing fix"
this will give you full infrastructure tethering instead of ad-hoc tethering.
what does this mean? It means that your phone will allow things like ipod's , game systems (psp, gameboy..) to connect as well. It will function exactly like a wifi router.

This could just go in the themes and apps forum technically since all you're doing is installing an app basically... But I guess it's a guide. Thanks for the info OP. For those of you on the new shared data plans, don't even worry about following this guide, the tethering is included in the package because Verizon wants you to use more data and pay overages.
The default tethering app however does support open NAT for Xbox and PSN though which is kinda nice :X (Only wireless tethering root app I got to work with PSN and Xbox for open NAT is barnacle WiFi tether and it was a bit of a pain the butt.)

Free Hotspot on Shared Plan
If you purchased the phone with Verizon After the deadline and lost your unlimited data however, gaining a shared plan, Wifi Hotspot is included in the share data plan at no additional cost. There is no reason to hide your wifi traffic. HOWEVER, I personally find the Wifi Tether app to be better than the default Hotspot app anyway.

You must have meant that this is the correct way for you. When I check "routing fix" or "galaxy nexus CDMA/LTE", my laptop connot see a wifi signal. However, following the OP's post worked like a charm for me. Obviously, it may take a bit of tinkering for people to determine the best setup for themselves.

Is there a way to lower the power of the Wifi from the phone to save power. The range you get when tethering is way further than necessary and it might be better for battery if you could lower the power usage.
Also, is using this rooted wifi tether safer than using foxfi in terms of verizon detecting the use.

How safe are these methods compared to using a power toggle widget to just enable the built-in tethering app? I've found if you try to enable it from the menu, it checks for subscription, but if you use a power toggle app, it "just works."
Edit: One more question....while performing the Wifi pop-up hack, I found an option along the lines of TETHER_ALWAYS_ON. Has anyone tried changing this to a 1?

I believe tethering is more frowned upon than anything else by verizon. I have not heard otherwise, or heard of trouble with big red because of it. However, the "best customer experience" is had when you pay for it. Haha.

Been using Foxfi the last couple of days with no problems. Solid app that works well.
