Is it possible to root the demo on my touch slide...
Any feedback/answers would be appreciated.
Have you even tried any of the current root methods that are out? You'd theoretically be the testbed seeing as people don't usually go out and purchase demo phones.

Why would the demo be any different?
I thought the demo phones were just plastic ones that dont even have a real screen or anything inside . Ok just kidding. I dont think there would be any difference from a phone used as a demo, so you shouldnt have any abnormal issues with rooting it.
i was just going to start a thead about this cause im being offered a demo phone in really nice shape and price
im happy now haha... thanks guys...
Well for one thing, T-Mo will never sell demos units. So it's hot in one way or another (not passing judgment). aside from that, the only difference I could find on the demo units was they were set to play a demo video on screen every so often. I wonder if you could just flash a stock image to it somehow and then just root as needed.

when i get mine (maybe in a week or two cause im not home right now so ill put my hands on it when i get back...) ill let you know if there is any issue when rooting and if it keeps playing the video wich i honestly think is not possible since the data and system are going to be replaced by the new rom
btw, i paid $100 for it and it is perfect looks brand new
Just in case, to stop the video on the original rom, just install a task killer app. I dont remember the name, but it was pretty obvious. The only downside to that fix is it has to be done after every restart. Rooting and replacing the rom will kill that problem though.

1. Someone on here said that the autobrightness problem(Which if I understood it right, is that the phone changed the brightness itself) has been fixed. Is that correct? I'd control the brightness now?
2. I've been reading on here all afternoon about rooting the Play, am I right in understanding that the whole rooting process is done on the phone itself? and that after rooting, I can just freeze the bloatware and that will give me the improved battery life and still allow me to use Over-The-Air updates?
3. I've also read on here about buttons falling out. Is that a widespread problem or just one or two unlucky people?
4. All the games are saved to the SD card, right? I don't have to worry about running out of space? and what's the average file size for Xperia Play games? I've never really played games on an Android phone before.
5. Is there any of problems I should know about before buying?
Thanks anyone who answers.
Im a noob to the play but I will answer from my limited experience
1. I updated to 2.3.3. I have a widget toggle that appears to allow me to to turn the brightness on or off. So I have not had any issues with it being too dark. I must admit the auto brightness in my old phone (orange san Francisco) was very good and the play doesnt seem to match it. maybe 2.3.4 has improved functions. Not a big problem though as I use the toggle.
2. not sure to be honest. I have not bothered rooting this phone. I used to mess about with the OSF with roms etc. but I dont feel the need to on this.
3. my power button gets stuck on the case edge and needs to be lifed to undo! Luckily I never use the power button or it could get irksome. All the functions like airplane and such can be toggled with widgets.
4. Yes and no. I am not 100% but I think the system games appear to be on the system memory only and cant be moved. All new games can of course be moved to SD (if it allows etc). I installed one game from ea and before I moved it to SD I was being told I was low on space... So there isnt a tonne of room.
5. The only issue I have is the mentioned power button. Considering I have sat here playing pilot wings and final fight perfectly, I will so utterly forgive the little beast
I think its the best value £150 you can spend. The screen is also lovely for media playback and since my PSP broke its been wonderful actually converting videos to watch on the nice screen
Just to answer the question about the root.
Yes, almost everything is done on the phone itself. Rooting on 2.3.2 is very easy to do. After you root, you can grab titanium backup and freeze unwanted apps. Just make sure you ONLY update via OTA after you root to avoid losing root.

1. As of the last version, 2.3.4, the auto brightness issue has disappeared. People complained that it was too dark by default and that the maximum brightness was capped, but the last version corrected that.
2. Check my signature
3. While there are debatable design choices like the power buttons and the slider feels a bit lose , I wouldn't say they're big issues, or widespread.
4. One of the big gripes with the play is the scarce internal storage. games are usually moved to the Sd, but they still may leave a trace in the internal storage. When that trace is circa 1 mb you won't be bothered, but when it's 20 megabytes, that's a five percent of your whole storage.
5. It's a good phone, sturdy and reliable. I know it's moved me away from touch screen only phones.
Thanks for the answers guys, i'm seriously considering upgrading to this right now from my Samsung Galaxy Ace

I do only do updates OTA, I don't plug my phones up to my windows laptop and updates seem hard or impossible on Linux.
and I hadn't found that thread yet, I'll take a look, thanks!
If you only do updates OTA, forget about custom ROMs and the like.

and that's kinda weird, right?
And I just thought of another question, the Play is HDPI right, not MDPI?
Yes sir. 854x480 for a four inch screen makes it a High Dot Per Inch device.
Just ordered it, thanks for the help guys!

Yes I'm from England, I ordered this one from Argos. http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/s...=1500002901&langId=-1&searchTerms=XPERIA+PLAY It's out of stock atm, but then it was on Saturday when I checked but they had some back in Sunday when I ordered so they still seem to be getting some. Mine arrives tomorrow apparently.
Hi, I have a few questions I hope you can help me with?
My wife has a galaxy nexus, stock and unrooted. It is only around 6 weeks old and last week it started crashing, turning off then getting stuck in a boot loop just displaying the starting colours. I understand this is a known problem, she has software version 4.0.2 and it says her phone is up to date.
I "fixed" her phone once with a factory reset however this time she is away with work till Friday and now has no use of her phone or contractual minuets or data ect.
To make things worst she was planning on using the sat nav and wireless tethering to her laptop. It is the second time this has happened and she has lost all faith in her phone. She can maybe upgrade the software by downloading the 4.0.4 software but she/I don't see why she should have too. She just wants a phones that does what it says on the tin without needing to mod or mess around with it.
My questions are...
Is this problem enough for her to exchange the phone for another phone all together, she fancies a One X. Has anyone here managed to exchange the phone for this reason?
If not will updating the software to 4.0.4 fix the issue for sure? She really needs a reliable phone. Maybe it will be best to send it back under the warranty but we are afraid she will get another GNex with the same issue.
Any advice will be much appreciated
Sorry for the long post and thanks for reading,
Oliver
I would just try updating it and then wipe it. If that doesn't fix the issue it's most likely a hardware issue and I would warranty the phone.

Hey there,
Well first I would suggest calming down and not reverting to hardware issues just yet, Bootloops are pretty common, especially when using phones which were meant for the (a bit) more advanced user, it's advantage is also it's flaw, being a modding monster that it is..
And this is by no means a flame - but I wouldn't want my wife to have a GN for that exact same reason, yes - she knows about flashing roms and stuff, but she needs a reliable phone, that will work and do what she needs it to do and nothing more, as opposed to me, I like to mess around a bit with my phones (also not that much, I plan to stay stock with my GN).
To your question, I don't have any experience with RMA's but it maybe worth a try.
You also mentioned she fancies the one-x.. that means she wasn't really keen on buying the GN in the first place (I believe).. and also - and don't take this the wrong way - I think she\you don't really know what the GN is all about, this isn't a phone for everybody, I mean - it is, but it's a shame to see it fall into hands that do not appreciate it for what it is, think of it as a nice new Ferrari, sure - it'll get your wife to work But she is not going to the Nurborgring to time her laps with it.. she'll complain that once in a while the clutch is too sensitive and that she cannot count on the car to take her to work every day, and that she really fancies the new Volkswagen beetle... you get my drift
Also - I believe that flashing to the 4.0.4 will sort the bootloops, which usually has everything to do with the kenrel.
Best of luck!
p.s. All of the above is said in a humoristic way!

My wife wanted to upgrade her htc desire to a faster phone with bigger screen, she loves android and Google products and the Google nexus seemed like the best choice at the time (b4 the one X was released) she loved the phone till now.
The phone has twice randomly gone into a boot loop and twice we managed to get it working again both times within the week. This has caused her to lose faith in the phone. I guess the update should fix the issue but it doesn't seem to be available on her phone just yet.
A basic phone would not be enough 4 my wife, as I said in my first post she uses it to connect her laptop to the Internet and as a satnav. Also she watches youtube videos (720p screen is handy here) and for facebook.
We never had any such issues with our desires. When my wife returns home we will update her phone via pc if it doesn't void warranty (I'm sure it won't ) and hopefully the issue will be fixed for good.

Sounds like our wives can get along my wify loves her htc desire hd! and to be honest, in my opinion in many ways it's much better than the sensation I had (stock).
And by what you described, if I was your wife (lol ) I'd also go for the GN.. I trust you know how to upgrade to 4.0.4, if you need any help just say so and I'll be more than happy to help
Also - from what I know upgrading will not void you warranty, you can simply lock the bootloader once you're done upgrading if you wish.
I really wish the bootloops will stop and that you wife will continue to enjoy her GN!
Hi again
I unlocked, rooted and installed Android Revelution HD 3.0.0 (based on 4.0.4) by mike1986 on her phone.
She is happy with her phone again.
Now it's rooted she likes the extra apps she can now install like AdFree.
I have a quick noob question though..
After installing the new rom her phone it said their is an update available. I understand that she should NOT accept over the air updates now she has a custom rom, and is that right?
Cheers, Oliver

Hey Oliver, sorry.. seems I didn't get subscription notifications on your reply...
anyway, she "can" download the update, but it will not install, it will simply give an error upon installation, the reason is the original files that the update needs to update are not there anymore, or they are but have changed, so it will just give an installation error.. that's the only downside to having a custom rom. me personally - I like mine stock at the moment
Just a quick update, I rooted, s- offed and install Arhd rom on my wife's gnex.
She says her phone is running faster/smoother than ever and has not restarted since. It's running great and she is happy again

Are there any updates on an unlock method for 3.11.605.1? I'm having a pretty serious problem with streaming Internet Radio apps cutting out with the screen off after about 5 minutes. The app Data Connection Fix has helped out a lot, but I wanted to try out other ROMs to see if I can find 1 without this issue. It's such a shame that I'm having this issue because the HTC One seems like such a great phone. Unfortunately, streaming Internet Radio at work is the main thing that I use my phone for and my older Droid X2 on 3g outperforms this phone in that aspect. It's so sad a newer 4g device has this issue and makes me wonder if I should ever mess with another HTC device or Android device period. I wanted to get away from iOS, but I'm finding that almost every Android device I've been using needs to be unlocked/rooted to fix really simple features that should work right out of the box and with every update. The Bluetooth A2DP quality problem with most JellyBean devices has been a nightmare. That's what made me ditch my LG G2. I tried just about every custom ROM and music through bluetooth was horrible no matter what I tried, even on the newer KitKat ROMs.

I'm pretty sure there's just a setting you're missing that keeps the radio from cutting out. I used to stream Sirius XM and had the problem but I remember getting it fixed somehow. If I think of it I'll let you know. And no, you can't gain s-off on 4.4.2. If you read at all on here, you'll know when you can.

Could you please tell me what setting? I get great service where I work and haven't had a problem with any other phone. I even went to Verizon and got a new SIM card. I've tried everything, starting with factory resets and clearing the cache. I have sleep mode off, app data sync on, mobile data is not restricted or limited, I've tried with and without beats audio enabled. The audio cuts out about every 5 minutes for 5-10 seconds and comes back on, just to cut out again for 5-10 seconds every 5 or so minutes. It's very annoying. The only thing that really helps is the data connection fix app, but that's not 100% reliable. I even called HTC and Verizon about the issue and they are looking into it. I would have normally just tried a different ROM, but I'm unable to unlock/s-off/root my phone because I'm on 4.4.2(3.11.605.1). That's the only reason I even called them. I currently have my phone up for sale and I'm seriously thinking about switching my service to sprint. I'm tired of paying top dollar for used phones to keep my unlimited data on Verizon. For all I know, there could be a problem with the phone, but it seems like a software issue to me. Everything else works and runs great. It's just that streaming Internet Radio is the thing I use most.
Have you tried this?

Yes I've tried. It has nothing to do with beats audio. For some reason it just drops the data connection for like 5-10 seconds with the screen off every 5 minutes or so. I don't know if it's incompatible apps with 4.4.2 or 4.4.2 itself. It could also have something to do with the HTC sense software. It could just be the way this phone communicates with the Verizon towers. I have no idea and it's very frustrating. The last time I had a problem similar to this was when I had an LG Optimus V on Virgin Mobile and it would lose 3g and I would have to turn off the data connection and turn it back on. This is different, though, because I have 4G LTE all the time. There just seems to be a delay in receiving my data to where the Internet Radio cuts out before it signals for more data. Then by the time I receive more data, it's too late and the sound has already cut out. I did a speed test and I'm getting about 30mbps download and around 15mbps upload so I know I'm not being throttled. The only thing that helps is the data connection fix app.

I did some more testing and I don't have any issues on WiFi and I don't have any issues if the screen stays on. It's only on cellular data with the screen off when I'm having issues. I noticed the Power Saving feature was removed in 4.4.2 and instead there's a sleep mode option. I have the sleep mode option off, but I'm thinking my issue might be because of a power saving bug in the HTC software for 4.4.2. If anybody knows anything about this, please post. Thanks
Think it will ever be unlocked?
I would SO much love to have airplay enabled on my HTC One. I came from iPhone, and have a full home surround sound based on Airplay, which I now can't use. Airplay is available only through a root application, although i have my phone on 4.4.2. Any thoughts on if and when this will ever be unlocked? Otherwise it's a huge reason for me to not have this phone...

Well it took beaups and crew about 1 month + to get 4.3 unlocked. Plus it seems more devs are having issues with 4.4.2 so it could be longer. At this point hope for the best and expect the worse.
I seriously don't know why all of these companies continue to try and lock out everyone's phones (and spend unnecessary money doing so) when someone will just outwit them almost every time. If a dev REALLY wanted this done right away it would be done! Point blank... It's a cat n mouse game and Verizon will lose. I just purchased an HTC One on 4.4.2 and have full faith that it will be cracked wide open anytime now. No one can stop somebody that is determined and smarter than the person who created the bottleneck. Here's hoping to a quick S-off method soon :victory:

It's not unnecessary money to them honestly. In Samsung's case they are trying to prove that their devices are secure enough to use for government agencies. Do you think they care that a few rogue hackers find exploits from time to time? No, they just need to convince some corporate goon that his e-mails to his mistress won't get intercepted. Speaking of the S4, it's been locked down now for about 8 months so I'd say they're getting pretty damn good at it. They have root I believe, but the bootloader is locked down tight on every S4 other than the very first firmware that came with the phone. I'm not sure what HTC's motivations are but I'm guessing they need to play ball with companies like Verizon in order to be able to sell their devices in the future.
Another thing that is hurting us is that Android itself is getting more secure. They are adding features that prevent exploits so it makes it harder for your average dev to find a way in. In the future we may be forced to buy developer editions to be able to do anything. That's worse case, but you never know.
Just like you I had "faith" that a developer would crack the S4 and I could finally have freedom. It never happened. It still hasn't happened. That's the main reason I switched to HTC. I'm not saying you should give up hope, but if you can't stand a phone to be locked down you should be looking into buying a different phone just in case...

Valid points! That's why I said "almost every time"... I really just need root and I would be happy but I switch devices so much that I probably won't even have the One (my 3rd HTC One) by the time it gets exploited (if) it does. And I do understand that Google has to close a lot of security holes so that they don't look like they are such a terrible company by allowing all of these terrible "viruses" into our phones which I have never had any issues with. I do agree with you though that we will probably all be buying dev phones sooner than later. Thanks for the insight!
Just another reason to leave Verizon and go get a Nexus device.
Just bought the G4 on 8/6. I'm going in to return it tomorrow. It gets terribly hot and the finding location icon is constantly flashing. I don't know if I should just swap it for a new G4 or get something else. I know there is a root method but I've heard of it working and causing issues for others. I saw a thread where the My Verizon app was asking for root access. I know you can just freeze it. It stinks that the phone is locked. I'm torn between this phone and the Nexus 6. What would you do?
I'd try finding out what's causing it to get hot; Probably some apps running in the background that don't need to.
Getting root isn't an issue as long as there is a compatible image. What you do with root access could cause issues.
You can disable some of the built-in apps with root (you can do it within FX Explorer + root addon). That should improve performance/increase battery life/reduce heat.
Try using the Cooler app from playstore.

On a side note, I keep leaning towards the G4. I loved the G2. I'm on Verizon and would pick up the VS986. It comes with 10B I think and then it updates to 11A. If I decide to stay with the G4, should I try rooting before upgrading? I'm almost certain that out of the box, it needs a software update.

It will likely come with 610B, so there is definitely an update available.
The first root image released for Verizon was 611A. But I'm pretty sure someone has since released a rooted image for 610B, so you might not need to update.
But I could not get some features (Advanced Calling) working on 610B, until I updated to 611A. So it's possible you would want to update to 611A anyhow.
Honestly, id wait for the nexus and the note 5 coming out. The touch issues along with lg not wanting to unlock bootloader has made everyone frustrated.
I've bought the european version H81510C and the video are plagued with all major side-effects of the rolling shutter. Wobble, skew and warping effects, all around, literally a jello cam very similar to the after effect warp stabilizator, just lot's more unpolished. The top of the phone reach very high temperature by random or just by calling someone and if you launch an app in GL ES 2.0|3.0 ( OPEN GL ES 3.1 + AEP doesn't seems to correctly "work" on this device (missing support of most texture extension:lightmap and such) will try Arm64 build later and/or texture compression), you'll burn your palm. The G4 seems also to discharge or doing something unattended trough the Qi wireless charging antenna tho, cause I feel mine arms becoming insensitive ( physical harm ) after holding it for a while under normal usage (insulating the 2 pin on the backcover does help a little, but, still unpleasant to keep in hand). If I were are able to find the XT1250|XT1225 for less then 350 I would swap it immediatly, nonetheless I'm also debated to return it and wait till september for a replacement, anyhow the NEXUS is a better choice, except for the camera, even a new ZenFone2 updated to the last avaiable version along it's propretary APP is better of this 600 EURO data collector.
update:
By updating to lastest version (or by NOT keeping it in the hands), the overheating issue seems somewhat under control.
About the unpleasant feeling | electric field > magnetic constriction = discharge , I found out mine shell ( backcover + wireless charging antenna ) the white one ( simil-ceramic ) is made by acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) "reinforced" with 10% of glass fiber.
About the LG G4 OPENGL ES 3.1 - it's very slow, it doesn't even make a third of a frame in one second ( other device reach 25-44 FPS ), will try in ASTC..and its better by not much.

That's mine experience with LG and I call it night- refund under way, will check the PRO version if one avaiable this year.
The G4 is fine. If it is overheating then there is a rogue app or process killing it. My coworkers Samsung G 5 was chewing through batteries and Exchange services was taking up most of the resources. We default the Email app and setup it up and all is right now.
When I first got my G4 and set it up, initially it got hot as hell downloading apps and settings. I did a factory reset and it has been fine since. It never gets hot anymore. I use GPS and QC 2.0 fast charge while on the phone (I travel for work) and it is fine. The only time I had an issue with heat was when I left it out in the sun while streaming pandora.
I think the issue is something to do with setup. I noticed I had bought mine at a brick and mortar store and the sales guy quickly ran through the setup and skipped a bunch of stuff. I think something was stuck in the background trying to do something. Once I factory reset it and set it up properly, I never had a problem. My friend also ordered a G4 online and had it shipped and she never had a problem.
Just my thoughts.

Question, how can I stop my vs 985 verizon from continuosly telling me update ready for download, since rooting my phone I get an error on update, the update is not an importantupdatw,is there a way to discontinue this update, the tried the code etc all to no availe,i used kingroot for rooting, then factory reset and still unable to process the new update, much easier to stop the update vs trying to install the update, and I'm not the best at this type of thing, don't want to brick my cell lol...

Hey LASERWOLF, I was wondering something. You think you might be available some time to skype to show me how to root? I'm going to downgrade to 13b some time and was watching your instructions on youtube that you made for rooting but sadly the camera moved around a little too much and wasn't able to see some of the things you did. Not sure how soon I'd be looking at doing it since I'd still need to downgrade to 13b first and then download all necessary files. Do I need ADB? But yeah if you get a chance to skype me and walk me through it I'd appreciate it. I just really don't want to brick the phone beyond repair since I've only had it for 5 days and am into it $400 not including the case the tempered glass screen protector and the first monthly bill lol. And since I got it from ebay you guessed it no warranty Thanks again for your videos. I just suggest getting a tripod like I got with a cellphone holder. Works great when I take night shots of the stars

As for downgrading i wont be able to show that. I dont wont to take the risk to be stuck on mm. As for the video. Sure i can redo the video. I got software now that i can screen record and this time i keep the camera stedy. Sadly i dont have a tripod. I was at the store a few weeks pricing one tho. I let you know when a updated video is up.
As for adb. A file i provided a link to has the adb in it. I check the links later to make sure they work cause i dont know if i am allowed to mirror files that are not mine here on xda

Thanks a lot. I'll keep my eye open for it. And I think the screen recorder will work awesome! Not sure if a walmart is near you. But in the camera section where they have selfie sticks they also have mini tripods with built in phone holders. They are around $9 if that interests you. I already had a tripod so I bought a selfie stick from there that came with a bluetooth remote shutter and just took the phone holder part out of the box and put it on my tripod.
