[Q] Low disk space, all apps are on SD - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I keep getting the low disk space notification, usually after clearing maps data it goes away, but it is quite annoying as Android stops accepting texts when the disk is full. I have moved ALL apps to my SD card but still the problem persists. I am guessing there is some stray data in my system but haven't been able to pin down it's location. I've also looked around in my apps list for apps that use lots of storage space but all of them use 500kb at most (except for Maps and sometimes browser).
I currently have around 40 user apps installed on my SD card and I have 10mb space left on my phone, while I've read others have 100+ apps installed and have no problems. I'm running OpenDesire.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem may be?

[Q] Low on Space. Memory leak? Reboot is temp fix

Throughout the day the available space will decrease (without me installing new apps or updates).
I generally have about 15mb free and this handset is completely unrooted stock 1.35.531.1 (2.1 OTA update 1)
Sometimes it will go from 15mb down to 3mb in just a matter of hours. When the space is that low, I cant open SMS threads to send new ones, but I can still receive them.
If I reboot, the phone thinks I have 15mb free again and everything works fine.
Its driving me nuts!
I've been searching Google (seems the forum search is 404 right now) and I've read of other Android phones having a memory leak possibly from the Bluetooth and/or the Mail app.
What do you guys know about this kind of problem?
Tried clearing your cache? That's probably what's eating your memory so much and it's pretty normal. Maps, Facebook and a few other apps use large amounts of memory so it's good practice to routinely clear the cache.
Cachemate is pretty good at freeing up some memory. If you root the phone you will bump your memory to 100+mb by saving the dalvik cache onto your sd card

I've looked at a number of apps via Manage Applications and nothing stands out as taking too much space or 'growing'.
Isnt the cache on a seperate partition than the data? ...So a large cache wouldnt cause me to run out of app (AKA /data) space and throw the Low on Space warning?
Using AppControl, I had about 145mb free when I first got this phone.
This post indicates that /cache and /data are different partitions. The total capacity of /data matches about what I started out with on a fresh handset.

I think I found the problem... its a couple apps eating up cache.
Reddit Is Fun and Dolphin browser were taking about 7-8mb cache after regular use.
I cleared the Reddit app's cache and set Dolphin to cache to SD card.
I still dont understand how this affects the /data space, but maybe I misunderstand that /data and /cache are different partitions.

Well an apps cache is shared with the app. So when an app creates data in the cache it causes the app to become larger.
The 80MB system cache is like extra RAM, but inactive. It stores the state of inactive items so when you open them again it starts right where you left off and swaps it out to the RAM, which is generally used for active processes.
The cache you cleared is for the app itself. It could be looked at as the /app/data/ folder, storing information about the app like settings, history, cached pages, and so on. Most apps max out at 1MB I would think but a browser is much higher because of cached pages, history, form data, and other things.

I thought about this earlier today and realized that I had been thinking about system cache and not app cache, like you said.
Thanks for the good post.

Whatsapp application size

My whatsapp application size has risen to nearly 10mb of internal storage. I was wondering if there is a way to decrease the size while keeping my conversations (e.g. removing cache and such). I tried removing and reinstalling the app, but to no avail.
Any help would be appreciated.
Move app too sd card. If it does not support this, i do not know anything you could do. It's just a big app.

Lost some memory...

Currently on my device I show:
Total Space
28.13gb
apps
1.78gb
pictures
558mb
audio
220kb
downloads
1.07gb
available
12.62gb
Granted, my math sucks, but am I not missing a little bit of space? Only thing I can think of is my "old" cached Google Play Music, but I have done 2 wipes and installed 2 different ROMs and same thing. Any ideas on how to track this down?
fyi, I went to the supposed folder where Google keeps it's cached music and it was empty.
I show about the same difference, but storage isn't picking up about 9gigs of app data i knowi have. In my case it's 9gigs of offline topo maps i keep. I'll bet its the same with you
Use this app to find more detail into where youre loosing data

[Q] Crazy data usage and internal storage space usage

Hello, yesterday i installed cm9 on my wildfire s, and today i got two messages on it, one saying that i have been using alot of data, where i can see that google play store, has been using 4 GB of data! i find this really wierd as i have only downloaded 3 apps, any ideas on why this has happened?!
the other message was that i have almost used all of my internal storage space even though i have only downloaded these 3 apps, it says that i have used 120 MB, this sounds pretty unrealistic as the apps i have downloaded is only facebook and such, any help there ?
i have tried searching on the forum and on google but i weren't able to find anything like this... :/
thanks

Storage space calculation

Hi,
I found a strange behaviour of the "used storage" built-in settings app. I deleted aproximately 0,5gb of apps such as HTC Speak etc. and nothing changed, nor in installed apps, nor in others.
It still says apps - 3,24Gb and Others 4,17Gb.
But when I click on Make some space, it counts only 530Mb in apps. How is it even possible?
And how to let the phone to learn how to calculate storage properly?
