Tried to name a backup with specific data pointing to type of rom, and kernal so I could easily identify it to be able to go back to it later, but it kicked my name out. Is it posssible to name a backup that way? And how do you do it? Thanks

Not sure here but I don't think you can have any spaces in the title
For fun, you can try to rename the backups after it's done. ON the SD card go to clockwork and then backup (or some such) and all the back ups are saved there. I think you can just edit the folder name...
Spaces will probably break something. Android is linux so it and spaces are likely not best friends...
I will give that a shot. I have been trying different ROMS and was trying to name the backups in a way that I would know which is which so I could switch easier.

I was actually wondering the same thing a while back. So I renamed one of my backups in the clockwork folder on my sd card. Then I resored it and it worked fine. I would suggest not putting any spaces in the name. Not sure if it makes a difference or not.

I have read around on the forums. I use Amon-ra and would like to rename some of my nand backups. I think the general advice is it will be fine as long as there is not any spaces in the name. If there is anything im missing before I do this.

As far as I know, spaces get converted to _ , so you should be fine either way.
your all set, here is what i name all my NAND's and everyone has showed up in Amon's
YYYY.MM.DD.ROMNAME.VERSION.THEME(if installed).Version(if different versions of themes/captured)

Not sure about amon, but i have clockwork, and I renamed my backups with the rom name after the date/time. When I went to restore them, I got a md5 mismatch error. I had to rename them back to what clockwork created to restore the backup. So just make sure you keep the date/time so if you need to, you can revert back to that.

Did you use an incorrect character, because I completely change mine, and no errors. A typical backup name for me might look like: CM7 build# xFeb

Only rename the folder, don't rename the files inside the folder.
Dude, just add a couple letters after the file. For example: if its a Fresh Rom you can just add xxxxxxFR at the end.

The last time I renamed my backups using Amon-ra, I was unable to restore in recovery. So, I just use a note app(ColorNote) to label my backups using the last 4 digits from the backup number. That way I know I won't have any issues.
I rename mine to what ever the date is and the ROM. Thats it. I use the dash symbol instead of the underscore cause for some reason it wouldnt recognize the underscores when I tried to restore. I also tried using dots instead of underscores and they wouldnt work for me either. I have found the only one that would work for me was the dash and Im on Amon Ra...
I rename my nands they look like this--> cm6wimaxalpha3 <-- or like -->cm7wimaxstockkernel <--
Without the arrows or dashes.

I used to use clockword mod recovery when I had my d1 and dx and I used to be able to rename the backups via rom manager. Now I use RA recovery with my evo, can I still rename backups? And if so can I do it through astro? Thanks

Yes you can just goto the nandroid folder on sd card.
Nope just tried it. It wont restore the backup when I rename it or add what ROM it is to the end of the backup.

I jsut went throug hthis recently. Renamed my backups to the ROM that they were... no way they'd reinstall again, so now I keep a note pad file of what is what.
You CAN rename a backup made with Amon Ra, but it has to be in a certain format. What I do is put a .txt file in the backup folder describing my setup. If I need to restore, I just move the file or delete it. I wouldn't do that if you don't have an adapter to access your SD card from a computer, in case your phone won't boot.
Do a quick search & you'll come up with the format, I've seen it on here before. No special characters are allowed in the file name, I know that much.
Ahhhh **** all that noise dude! Ill just get note pad. I don't like messing around with backups too much. to much can go wrong and then all of a suddden none of your backups work when you need them the most.Thanks for the help though guys

Just rename the folder the .img files are in, and use ONLY letters, numbers, underscores, and dashes. No spaces, periods, or special characters. Ta-da! It works!
I'm curious how renaming them works. I know i have to put it a certain way or it won't restore. So let's say I take my backup called
BDESW-20120204-2244 can I just rename it to Express by itself or no?

If you rename the folder, the md5's wont match, therefore it wont restore. I found this out the hard way before.
You can however just add text AFTER the folder name to indicate what rom backup it is. That way, when you want to restore it, just remove that text, leaving the original name. Just be sure the leave the original folder name intact.

well i found this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131784 so i added -express to the end of the name and about to see if it tries to restore
I rename mine all the time and no issues. Just do not add spaces that seems to screw it up.
What I do evo I just change 20120204-2222 to a rom that i am running, like cm7 ill put CM720204-2222. Never had any issues.

you can rename it to "turdburgler" if you want
I leave the letters, they tell what's backed up, and replace the numbers with a description.
I rename them so I know which backup it is.And before I started using firerat and was partitioned I made sure I put Sdext at the end.

I leave the date portion so I know that it's the lastest backup I've done and just rename the number at the end for example nandroid backup BDESW-20120206-1274 I'll just rename it to let's say according to the Rom I'm using BDESW-20120206-MIUI

I actually never rename, but thanks for asking the question, now I know too.
i didn't think that it would have any issues, since (at least with amon ra) the MD5 is inside the backup folder, with the *whatever*.img backup image
First off, Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but i dont think that the Q&A section would be a better place to put this.
So i flashed a bunch of different roms and set them all up exactly the way i want them and did a nandroid backup. Then i went on to the sdcard and (stupid move, i know) changed the names of the folders from the default nandroid name to the name of the rom without backing up the file. Now when i try to do a restore, it says md5 mismatch. I went back into the sdcard to try and go throguh the nandroid md5 file to find what to change the name back to, but there is nothing there (Itried it with a restore that i did not change the name of so i would be able to match some numbers, but couldnt find any that matched) I know that the name is probably the date and time, but i cant remember the time that i did the restore.
Anyone know what to do (besides flash the rom again, restore all my apps, put widgets back into place, change settings, and etc, etc)????
I change the name of the file but I leave it in the same folder. Never had a problem with the md5 at restoring.

LOL sorry about that. I tried the links and i can now get to the restore thing, but it gets stuck at checking md5 sum...
Are you backing up with rom manager? You shouldn't because that apparently doesn't work for some

I had this issue too. The problem comes when you rename a file and include spaces in the name. Nandroid backups don't work if there are any spaces in the name, dashes or underscores only. The suggestion above should solve the issue but if you want to keep the labels so you know which backup is your juggernaut ROM and which backup is your darkside ROM, you can rename them, just no spaces and use dashes instead.

Unfortunately there's not that I know of, I always label nandroid as soon as I make them to keep from forgetting. If you do start renaming them, make sure there are no spaces in the name otherwise you will get an md5 mismatch error (assuming you are on cwm, TWRP does not have this problem)
You just have to rename your nandroid backups on your computer. It's in your sd folder when you connect your phone under clockworkmod. I have 3 backups, and I name them after the rom /theme that they are.

I am starting to do that, but like the ones from when I began flashing (about a month ago) I have like 5 nandroid right now. I think thats a bit excessive considering that I only used AOKP, Jugg and Stock. And thanks for the heads up about the md5 thingy. I don't rename them on my computer, I upload to box.net and add it in the description. That way I can keep my cluttered computer a bit cleaner. And I have 50GB so it doesn't really matter.
Use ROM Manager for backups as it gives you the option of naming the backup before hand. Personally I'm very specific on the names. I include the ROM, date, and other things like any mods or stuff like that

I use rom manager also... So it's safe when backing up to add the name of the rom at the end of the date that it automatically designates for us? Thanks
