I have a rooted desire and never really tried restoring a backup and when I finally did I came across this error message:
No SD ext found. skipping backup of SD EXT
Generating MD5 sum
error while checking md5 sum!
chcking md5 sum....
MD5 mismatch!
My SD card has no partition whatsoever and I'm using fake flash by paul. My old phone was a N1 and I had no problem whatsoever doing this before. Is making a backup and restoring in the Desire an entirely different process?
Also how do you automatically backup apps in the Market? Meaning if I switch roms and just logged into my Google account the market would automatically "restore" my old apps. I used to be able to do this once in a while with my old N1 but I couldn't do it consistently. With my Desire I can't do it at all.
Thanks
It will give that error if you have no ext partition on your sd card. If you're not using apps 2 sd then you need not worry about it.
Other than that, try the latest clockwork recovery (2.0.1.4) and try a nandroid backup and restore.

Nandroid backup seems to work and I do get to see the file but when I try to restore it fails! Do I need to make an extension for it to work?
What about restoring apps from the marketplace via the internet? Like I said, I've done it a few times with my N1 wherein it automatically restores everything once I log in my Google account.
Thanks
Try creating an ext partition, convert ext2 to ext3. If it fails again, try backing up and restoring using the Nand using the latest Clockwork Recovery (2.0.0.7).
Your apps are linked to your Google account so when you sign in, they should be available for manual download.
You could also backup and restore your apps and data to your sd card using Titanium backup or MyBackup Pro (available from the Marketplace).

Apps are indeed linked but how do they become restored automatically? Like I said, I've done it before on my N1 with "applications restored" showing up on the notification bar.
Where do I get the latest clockwork recovery? Tried looking at the forums and came up empty. I just followed Paul's guide for rooting. Still don't understand why I can't restore from a nandroid.
thanks
I am not aware of any method to restore apps automatically from the Marketplace, i do it manually unless using a backup and restore app.
Try reading the fake flash thread on MoDaCo as i remember people had reported the same issue you are experiencing. What version of fake flash are you currently using?
You will find the Clockwork Recovery as an option in the ROM Manager app, which you can download from the Marketplace.

The easiest method is to use unreEVOked (link).
The earlier version of unreEVOked installed a much earlier version of clockwork recovery, and I found that the nandroid backup didn't work properly - it would seem to backup (albeit too quickly), but you couldn't restore due to the MD5 problem. I think it didn't actually ever complete the backup and generate the MD5s.
Version 2 hopefully fixes that problem - certainly Nandroid backups take a lot longer!
Regards,
Dave
Thanks guys.
Will look into unrevoked and try to get it to work. I'll also try to update my fake flash. I have been using the very first version when it came out and never really updated it lol
Updated my fake flash and it worked! Thanks guys!
Didn't know that the clockwork recovery was embedded into fake flash. I thought it was just an enabler or something.
Thanks again!
If you use unrEVOked you don't need Fake Flash, or vice versa.

Dave
Have still yet to try unrevoked, what exactly does it do when I plug it into my desire? Does it make me run Amon Ra's N1 recovery image? No more screen with the red triangle?

No problem bud, glad it worked out for you
When you enter Recovery, it loads the recovery image straight away, so you get a permanent custom recovery image when you hold power + home.
Will try it out thanks again! Currently experimenting with the Rom manager application. It's pretty neat and u can update the recovery image instantly. I take it as something like an app inside ur phone? Always there in the background waiting to be used?
Hi, is anyone else having the problem that ClockWorkMod 2.5.0.1 just hangs after "Backing up system..." when trying to do a Nandroid backup?
Backup worked fine with 2.0.x.x (the one that came with Unrevoked3), but now I can't seem to complete a backup. Haven't even tried restoring yet...
Trying to run a ROM backup using ROM Manager and Nandriod Backup but both go to a screen with a red triangle
Phone is rooted and running Defrost
I want to update to defrost 6.1
Any other way of backing up the ROM ?
Thanks

Boot in to recovery manually and back up or clear the download cache in rom manager and reflash clockworkmod. If it still fails try to disable signature verification in recovery (under install zip form sd)
I can't get to recovery though thats the problem.
How do you reflash clockworkmod ? Through ROM Manager ?
yes, first option when you open rom manager
Cashe cleared, then I tried to run the update ROM option selected back up and clear data etc.
Went straight to a red triangle, will now try and see about changing this clockworkmod
Thanks.
Ran the re-flash clockwork option, first one on the list, still gets the red triangle of noness.
I am getting this error when ever I try to do a nand restore : Error: run ' nandroid-mobile.sh restore ' via adb!
I am running amon ra 1.8, I have the latest sprint lovers installed running 3.70, new radios, pri 1.90. Hboot 79. I've succesfully backed up and restored nands in the past but now I get this error. I've tried to backup and then immediately try to restore the backup and I get the same error so its not a corrupt backup. I have more than 6gb available on my sd card and am fully charged. I've looked in other threads and haven't found an answer. Any help is appreciated since I'm flying without a net when I flash if I can't restore my nand.
Run the command from adb shell, and it'll tell you what's wrong. Duh.
In other words, do what it tells you to do. Is it really so hard to follow instructions?
Hey man had the same problem. I was on miui and I went back to sense to update profile and flashed the new radio combo so I made a nandroid of miui first and then when I tried to restore that same back up I got the same error that you got. I'm not positive but I think that it has something to do with flashing the new radio and then switching to aosp rom. I ended up having to reflash miui and then every thing went back to working normally.

nandroid won't work if battery is low, I think if it's less than 30% charged, might want to try charging it before restoring to see if it helps...
I've had this happen with a full battery. The couple of times I had it happen I just wiped cache and dalvik. Rebooted back up, then gone back into recovery and then was able to restore the nand backup. Might give that a shot.

I had the same problem and what nefariouss is saying might work. Also, once i wiped several times and then completely turned the phone off and booted back into recovery and then it would restore. Another time i reflashed the rom that i was trying to restore and once it booted i went back to recovery, wiped all and then it would restore. Hope that helps. Just keep messing with it. I know its a pain but eventually it will restore.

if your sd card didnt partion properly this will happen.
save everything on your sd.
reboot into recovery
repartition sd card.
read that a few people running clockwork recovery have this issue frequently.
Delete Spaces!
If you are trying to flash a file in recovery that has spaces in it, it will not flash and will give you that error. so 'Fresh Evo.zip' won't work, but FreshEvo.zip will work.
FML, ignore this post please. I was a bit stupid.
Sorry for bumping, I have the same problem on my Optimus One p500
Sorry for bumping but I'm really worried about my phone. I have the same problem on my Optimus One and I've tried stuff mentioned above with NO success. Is there maybe another way to restore stock Froyo or to get this working?? I'm a total noob by the way..

Download and flash this. It is a rooted stock rom (Froyo) that has NOT been deodexed. In other words, it is THE stock HTC sense rom (3.70) that will allow you to maintain root privileges. While in recovery, wipe EVERYTHING in the wipe menu EXCEPT the SD card BEFORE flashing.

This happened to me and I tried everything listed. Reformatted my SD card. Copied everything back and nand restore finished first time. Polly unrelated but the only thing different was I had upgraded my RA recovery after I had made the backup.

Same thing happened to me after I updated Amon Ra recovery after doing a nandroid backup. Desire wouldn't boot and got stuck on white screen. Tried to do the backup using ADB but each time I got to the last step it failed. So I tried clearing Dalvik cache etc and finally wiped my card using recovery. After a couple of attempts, I was able to restore the last nandroid backup. Big relief.
i need help!!! i have the same problem of the whole error run nandroid-mobile.sh.. via adb. ive scoured the internet and havent solved my problem. i tried doing the cmd prompt thing and i found the latest backup, put into the cmd prompt but this is what i got.

I was facing similar problem but thanks to @hecklbrg, It did the trick. Cheers.
So I was using Nandroid to backup everything, but then I switched to clockwork and upgraded it to the newest version in ROM Manager.
I want to flash the recovery I made yesterday with nandroid. Ive switched back to Nandroid in the rom manager but it still wont flash the recovery.
How do i get my nandroid backups installed again?
Clockwork wont be able.to restore nandroid backup. You must switch back.to RA recovery to do.this. Clockwork makes a different type of backup format n its located under clockwork folder.
You can use Rom Manager to switch back to RA Recovery
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I have switched back to RA recovery via ROM Manager.
I get part way through the recovery and it says "oops, something went wrong".
RA Recovery is at v2.2.2, when I was in the process of recovering before I got the oops message it says RA Recovery v2.3.
Is it possible I am using a version of RA to restore than the version I made the backup with, causing me problems?
Really appreciate it.
Still can't get this recovery installed.
Read the attached article:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897026
In order for you to flash your recoveries you need to go back to Clockwork Mod recovery v. 2.6.0.1. It's at the bottom of the article by Koush. Flash it, reboot, turn off your phone, and then do a manual restore of your backup from recovery using v. 2.6.0.1.
Here is a PC36IMG.zip if you want to go that route instead.
I got the 'oops' error before....I solved it by wiping all, flashing a rom.zip then once booted back up I was able to use my backups with no issues

Oops... something went wrong! Please check the recovery log!
Here is what happened...
1. Made nandroid backup of my Calkulin ROM using AMON_RA recovery
2. Flashed MIUI which I used for couple days
3. Decide to restore my phone... got error from the top (Oops something went wrong)
4. Decide to flash same Calkulin ROM version that I had before
5. Tried restore backup (thinking - I am on same rom should not be a problem)
6. Got error msg from top
7. Wipe everything
8. Flash Amon_RA again
9. Tried restore.. error
10. Flash Calkulin again
11. Tried restore.. have same error
Now... how do I restore my backup?
Check your memory available on your sdcard...may not be enough space for the backup. Or, the restore file might be corrupted.
4.36 GB free space... I used this backup for restore before and it worked. Now it doesn't.
Let me try other restore file (i have 3 backup's) Will post results.
-Stands by-
2nd backup worked but I still want last one... Might have idea what went wrong...
Testing something
Backup that worked was untouched and never used. Other one that was used at least 3 times now it doesn't working and it was renamed. I tried to use original name but even that did not fix anything. Will keep trying
RA sometimes glitches out, try flashing clockwork then back to RA.

Tried.. same thing again. I guess 1 backup is not to be trusted and I should be happy that I have any. Will try all of them now.
what does the recovery log show? You can find it at /cache/recovery/recovery.log or by using the move to sd option from the recoveries other menu.

Strange, /cache/recovery is empty, nothing inside.
What have you figured out? I'm still having the same problem every time I try to do a nandroid back up it tells me Oops...something went wrong, to check recovery log!
What could it be and how do I fix it so I can do a back up??
Nothing, I had another (older) backup and used that one. Only I can suggest that:
1. you make sure that Amon RA is same version
2. don't trust to one backup in future

you can also check you recovery log as someone else mentioned. in amon ra/other/move recovery.log to sd. use any file manager to open it. it should tell you what maybe happening.
I flashed PARANOIDANDROID 2.99 BETA3 from stock DLK4, 4.1.1. It worked but I was ready to revert back to the stock using the nandroid I made before flashing and realized that I did a factory reset when flashing pdroid and lost my nandroid backups. Fortunately I have older Nandroids from 12.12 on my pc. I placed it into the clockworkmod directory, sdcard\clockworkmod\backups, as I normally would but when I reboot into recovery I don't see the nandroid that I placed there. What do I do from here? I tried to do a factory reset from kies of DLK4 but afterwards I get stuck on the "Samsung" loading screen.
Any help would be appreciated. I spent the last 4 hours going through treads as I normally do when having problems but I created my first thread because I screwed up beyond what I can repair myself
edit: while in recovery, I made a backup of pdroid2.99 to see where it saved. When I opened the directly using my pc, I couldn't find that backup I just made. I put the nandroid onto my external sd card and that I could see it in recovery but I get the following error "Error while restoring /system!"

You flashed a 4.2 ROM with an out of date recovery by the sound of it. 4.2 modifies the directory structure of you're phone which is unsupported in old recoveries. I run TWRP myself and I just moved my backups to my new root folder which can be found in: /storage/emulated/0
CWM stores recoveries in blobs and I'm unsure if this method will work for you. Your only option if that doesn't work is to ODIN back to stock. Once you've performed an ODIN back, go into your recovery and factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik.
Then update your recovery for future flashes. I recommend TWRP. Overall an easier recovery.

I successfully flashed back to stock 4.1.1 using ODIN using the rom I got from samsung-updates. I've lost IMEI so I have to inject l that back later on. I'm using CWM 6.0.1.2 and when in recovery when I try to restore my backup and get to "error while restoring /system!"
I've been trying to find other threads, tried what they suggested but no luck
edit: I've found TWRP v2.3.3.1 and but I don't see /storage/emulated/0 instead I put my backup in /storagr/TWRP/BACKUPS/911de9 and tried to restore but it fails
What I did was make a nandroid on the ROM you have and just copy and paste the old one into the new directory and you can flash that old nandroid. Worked perfect for me
