2 CyanogenMod questions - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got 2 questions for CM6, I'll be getting my Desire back by Thursday hopefully :
1) CM6 by default doesn't have any of the Google's applications, including the Market App. I know it has a separate package, but it has too many Google's applications. The only ones I want from it are the Market, and the necessary ones required for operation(Google's accounts for authentication, setup wizard etc). Rest I want to download from Market(I see that most are available from it). So can I just delete the apps from the system folder in the package? If so, what are the must ones that must be kept?
2) Is the SD card required to be partitioned in 3 partitions(Fat32 + Ext2/3/4 + Linux Swap) when using CM6?

1. you can open gapps.zip and remove all the apps you don't need in /system...don't know which are "must have"
than you zip it back and flash it ,you can sign it but you don't have to...you can flash unsigned gapps.zip using clockwork recovery
2.no CM doesn't use apps2sd(ext) they use native froyo a2sd
hope this helps

I got another Q, can a Goldcard be used as a normal SD Card? I mean I plan on making one as soon as I get my Desire but I'll preserve it for future needs, I SLCD bricked my last one and realised the importance of having one. So would that be a good idea?
Thanks for your reply, it helps . Also, what are the kind of partitions I need to create for the SD card to be usable in the phone as well as Amon Ra's or ClockworkMod's Recovery? I created a FAT32 one using Windows and GParted(2 different times) but Clockwork's recovery or fastboot couldn't recognize them.

Yes the goldcard can be used as a regular sd-card
And for partitioning you only need a fat32 one as long as you don't run any old a2sd. Using windows should work fine, but you could try partitioning it again with amonra or something similar. And are you sure, you haven't got something wrong. The recovery is usually easily able to read fat32 easily, and how do you see, recovery and fastboot doesn't recognize it?

[Q] Creating an EXT partition on SD card

On a rooted HTC Desire I installed the XDA rom: “LeeDrOiD V2.0 (30/08 l Official 2.2 l FAST l STABLE l OPTIONAL A2SD+)”.
I need to create on the SD Card (of 16GB) a partition EXT3.
I have used Quick System Info Pro and A2SC storage to check and it displays “Information not available”.
I have installed on HTC the utility “Rom Manager” in order to try to create the EXT type partition.
When I am trying to format with Rom Manager the software does not ask me what type of partition to create (EXT2 or EXT3), but only what size to have and the size of swap.
Can you help me by giving advice on how to create the EXT3 partition?
Thank you in advance.
Rom manager creates ext3 partitions.

I partitioned with Rom Manager my sd card with Ext size=512MB and swap=0.
After that, again, Quick System Info Pro say, at <A2SD storage> : “Information not available”.
??
(sorry for my english)
Did you reboot your phone once done?
I am stuck in the same position, in Rom manager I select the size and swap and then it reboots. It now goes straight to a diagram of an exclamation mark in a white triangle and an Android bot. I waited for 15 minutes and nothing happens. Here I press the oj and there is some information stating that there is some problem with the update.zip. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!

Yes.
And... exact like <David0123> !
Same thing here
I'm just gonna chime in and say I'm having the same issue here when trying to create the partition using rom manager.
I ended up creating the partition using gparted on my linux box, but after copying all the files back to my fat32 partition, and rebooting my phone it no longer recognizes the applications installed to sd using froyo a2sd. (I have not installed old school a2sd yet as it is not compatible with the version of CM I'm using... waiting for 6.1)
Is there a reason the phone wouldn't see the files for the applications? I created my fat32 partition first, then an ext3 with the remainder.
Is it possible to create a 1gb ext partition using ROM Manager?
Hi.
I have an HTC Desire (T-Mobile UK) usng the Pinky Desre 1.8 rom. I have ROM Manager Premium installed, but this only allows upto 512mb for an ext partition.
I have a 8gb MicroSD card and would liike to create a 1gb ext2/3/4 partiton.
Does anyone have any nfo on how I can do this (assumng that ts possible of course)
Thanks in advance

Have you tried
- moving all the apps on the SD back to the phone
- Do a backup i.e. Titanium
- Reboot phone
- Create partition using ROM Manager
- Re-install apps \ Move to SD
I haven't tried ths, but thinking logically, it should work

I have 16mb of available space on my phone with every application possible moved to the sd card so moving them back is out of the question. I guess I could always just do an brainapp sync for my free apps and re-install the rest from .apk. I'm thinking now I'll hold off until I get a class 6 to make the ext partition.

Amon-Ra lets you make bigger partitions that Recovery Manager/ClockWorkMod
There is a way to do this via ADB I believe as well, or a linux partition manager like GParted.

Thanks for the tip.
I'm checking the forums on Amon-Ra....need to know a few things i.e. can it be installed \ work with CW; does CW need to be uninstalled etc)
Will try the Linux G-Parted route as well.
Thanks

How mine is set up
Use Unrevoked to install Amon-Ra (that way if you enter recovery via HBOOT you go to Amon-Ra
Then keep RomManager installed, if you need to do anything via clockworkmod you can do it via this app, which "fake flashes" the recovery for its purposes, however still leaves Amon-Ra as its permanent recovery.

My unanswered ROM Manager, SD Card Partition post looks like it belongs here
I rooted my dInc with UnRevoked & 4ever and am now running SkyRaider 3.0 Sense (seems stable & fast) and I see that there's an update available to SR Sense 3.1 RC3 - so I figure now might be a good time to use ROM Manager to create an Ext partition for Apps on my 16G Kingston Class 10 SD card - although, so far I've been using App2SD successfully w/o partitioning the card. What's the benefit? The ability to back up apps on the sd card?
Anyway, I did nandroid & Titanium backups and copied my entire card to a folder on my PC.
My first question is what size ext partition should I choose? (I do currently have a ton of apps - but will be paring down to a leaner machine with fewer redundant apps). Also, what swap size do you suggest?
2nd, when I copy from the PC's SD Card folder back SD Card, which files & folders go to the ext. partition? Just the moved apps?. Then, all the rest to the main partition?
Then, do I just mount the card in the phone and run the update with a full wipe?
I already have the Goodies installed but, will I want to d/l the newest kernel?
Lastly, which of Titaniums' batch restore scenarios is best to finish with? Missing Apps w/ data? All apps & system data?
I realize there are numerous ways to go on this but I'm hoping you folks have some experience you can share before I make any major changes to a phone that's really running pretty well.
Please keep in mind I'm working with ROM Manager and I haven't gotten into sdk, adb, emulation or overclocking - yet

(Q1) I have an 8gb sdcard and created a 1gb Ext2 partition using G-Parted (using Ubuntu 10.04 onmy thumb drive). You dont need to create SWAP. I did'nt use ROM Manager as it (a) totally wipes your sdcard and (b) it only allows for a 512mb partition. I still copied all my sdcard data to my NAS beforehand though....just in case
once I parttioned my sdcard,
I did a full wipe (incl. cache \ dalvic etc)
Installed custom ROM (Pinky Desire 1.8 – FRF91 Official Sense Release).
Then re-installed everything from scratch as, like you, was unsure how TB would restore my backups.
Then used TB to restore User apps w /Data. I figured that system apps were easier\safer to reconfigure manually
Once done, and tested - did an"all user apps+system data" backup with TB.
Booted into Recovery, and did Nandroid backup (and copied that to my NAS bos)
Dont worry about which apps go to the EXT partition. As I understand it, most free apps can be moved\installed to the SDCard; paid apps can only be moved\nstalled to sdcard if the developer has enabled it to do so. I use an app called App 2 SD - it dentifies which appa can be moved to sdcard.
I'm pretty sure that there are easier \ quicker ways, and that my way is over cautious, but it was useful in giving me a better understanding of Android.
I hope this helps.
Thanx for the feedback!
Sounds like about what I'll be doing - unless someone comes up with specific details on using ROM Manager.
What's particularly confusing is that even the apps that can be moved to the SD card only partially reside on the card.

[Q] Rooting successful - Now what?

So... After much hesitation (purely because of worry), I finally rooted my Desire. And yes, it went without a hitch.
I do have that app which says "Superuser Permissions".
Running ClockWork mod recovery/rom 2.5.0.7 (I guess).
I have downloaded the major recommended apps for rooted devices, viz. - Root Explorer, Titanium Backup and ROM Manager.
I'd like to know what else can be done now...
My phone's memory is down to 20-ish odd Megs. Thanks to updating Adobe, Facebook, GMail, Maps, QuickOffice and installing Swype.
Is there a way to increase the memory now?
I am running FroYo 2.10.405.2 and Radio 5.09.05.30_2.
Thanks in advance...
You could try a custom rom with apps2sd for starters
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Ah ok... Will read-up before going for one.
One more thing, please.
Unrevoked worked without a hitch. And there is no visible difference, either. No change at the HBOOT screen.
Which prompts me to ask: shouldn't it change from S-ON to S-OFF? Or am I getting confused with something else?
PS: apps2sd? I have a software called App 2 SD. Any difference between the two?
Unrevoked dosent unlock your bootloader, if you want to do that just search development for "alpharev" ..... apps2sd+ and the native froyo move to sd are diffrent, the biggest advantage being apps2sd+ also moves the dalvik cache (mine is over 50mb)

Root is not the same as s-off. There is a fix, which flashes a pathced hboot though, which till give you s-off. It is easy, and i prefer to have it, as et makes recovering the phone so much easier, if something happens
For a2sd there is 2 major types. The one implemented in froyo by default, which you already make use of. The app you have allows you to mave pretty much any app to the sd-card. But you will still have the dalvik-cache in the phone memory. The other type of a2sd is what i have experienced to give me plenty of space is usually implemented in most custom roms, and is activated by making an ext-partition on your sd-card(can be done through rom manager).
I prefer the last one by far, and if i should recommend a rom for you, it should be AuraxtSense, which have some great UI changes, which makes the phone look great in my opinion. If you want std. htc sense rom and look, leedroid is a decent rom, and if you want to play around with a rom without sense like the nexus one, you should try cyanogen mod or opendesire
Thanks, friends. Slowly finding my way about these tricks.
Dunno if it is a coincidence - I've never experienced "crash" issues but earlier today, the HTC launcher crashed and I had to live w/o the home screens for a few minutes.
Any idea why this might have happened?
As regards A2SD+
I found this bit by Googling...
1) Download and install MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition.
2) Backup the contents of your SD card somewhere.
3) Connect the SD card to your PC. Make sure it shows up as a drive in My Computer.
4) Load up the Partition Wizard applicatiion.
5) Select your memory card in Partition Wizard (usually at the bottom, look for the drive letter to make sure you don't delete a hard disk). It should have a partition already, probably FAT32 formatted. You need to right click on every partition within your memory card and click Delete.
6) It won't delete right away, these tasks will be added to the panel on the left. Click Apply to make it happen. This will obviously delete everything!
7) You should now have a single chunk of unallocated memory which is the entire storage capacity of the card. Right click on this and choose 'Create'.
8) In the options set 'Create As' to 'Primary' and the file system to FAT32. Leave Cluster Size as default and ignore the drive letter.
9) Now drag the bar below from the right to set the unallocated space after this partitiion. The large FAT32 partition is where your music, videos, pictures and other files will be stored so this needs to be the largest. Make sure you have plenty of room for everything you need. The space after it is where apps will live. Around 512MB should be sufficient though if you're going to be downloading lots of games and other large programs then make it a bit bigger. Click Ok to finish.
10) Now right click and 'Create' on the remaining unallocated space, ignoring the warning message that pops up. Set to Primary again, but this time in File System select 'Ext3' (you can also use Ext2, Google it if you're interested in the differences and want to read lots of debate about which is better). Don't change the size of the partition. Click Ok.
11) Now click Apply and let it do its stuff. Once finished you should have one FAT32 partition and one Ext3. Note that the Ext3 will not be visible through Windows normally so you can't browse the files, but you can delete it and format the entire card back to FAT32 via Partition Wizard.
Important: since all your apps will be stored on the SD card instead of the phone, switching the phone on without the card inside will cause problems, you may not even be able to boot properly. And if you change cards you'll need to make sure you copy the contents of the Ext3 partition to the new card.

I guess ext2/3 terms are Linux-related terms which I am not familiar with... Do I go ahead with this way of enabling A2SD+?
(I suppose folks who rooted without using Unrevoked have another way to enable A2SD+)
Thanks!
Ext2/3 is a linux partition type. Android can use this, because it is of course based of linux. The best thing you can do is backup your sd card and boot into the clockwordmod recovery. From there you can partition your sd card for a2sd+.
I have a 4gb sd card with a 512 mb ext3 partition for my apps.
Hope it helps!
Oh great... Thanks!
So... Does this method actually "fool" the device in to believing that the internal memory is 140ish + what we assign from the memory card?

Yep, but you'll still see it displayed separately. Most of the app's will go to ext partition, only data will stay on internal space. I recommend Quick System Info app for checking space (and bunch of other stuff).
Thanks!

I have a quick question related to all this. I just rooted my desire with unrevoked 3.21 and a recovery image has been installed and it is version 2.5.0.7 of clockworkmod, I guess the latest.
Then I read other posts where people suggest to use rom manager and one of the options is "install clockworkmod" ... but if I have already installed it why should I need it again? Do ROM manager and unrevoked install in different places may be different versions of clockworkmod? then which is the one that will be used booting in recovery? Does this mean that the recovery image installed by unrevoked could be deleted somehow..? There are a lot of controversial explanations in the forums and I really dont have any idea which one to believe. Any expert could explain in easy terms? Thanks

[Q] CDMA; attempting to replace the recovery

Please bare with me, as there's a lot to explain. I am in dire need for your help.
Starting off, my specs are as follows:
HTC Desire CDMA from U.S. Cellular
Rooted via Unrevoked (with unrevoked forever)
Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 2.5.0.9
Current ROM: CyanogenMod 6.1.0
Current SD: 8GB
The phone is barely over a week old. I rooted it last week, flashed Cyanogen, and customized everything. Well one thing I wished I had done before was partition a part of my SD to allow for more internal phone space. Even with
Cyanogen's FroYo (2.2.1) capability to move apps to the SD, I kept running a thin line on low memory. This is because, as most of you know, not the entire app is moved. I was faced with the decision of removing apps that I frequently used, or look for other storage solutions.
I found out that there was a way to make the phone think it has extra memory by partitioning a part of your MicroSD card to an Ext3. I researched how to do this with the tools I already had available (this being ROM Manager & ClockworkMod). I first tried ClockworkMod's recovery, which give me the option to partition the SD. I selected 512MB for the size (it's more than enough for me) and a swap size of 0. It completes, and I reboot the phone. I checked the internal storage space, and it's still low (< 15MB). Upon more research, I found that it may have only been an Ext2, and not Ext3. Upon plugging my phone back into the USB/Computer, I noticed the overall size for my MicroSD went from 7.5x GB to 6.9x GB. If the partition didn't work like I wanted, I wanted my space back.
So for hours I scour the forums with nothing helpful in return. I tried Partition Magic to try and merge the partition back to my original card, but it couldn't see it. It only saw a SD card that was 6.9x GB. So further research showed me that ClockworkMod was pretty bad at partitioning the SD card to Ext3, and everyone suggested AmonRa. I found a version of AmonRa that was designed for the HTC Desire. I placed the .img file on the root of my SD card and opened up ROM Manager. The option to "Flash Alternate Recovery" was greyed out, despite the fact that the image was on my SD Card (which was mounted; USB Storage for the PC was turned OFF). So further reading said I needed the premium version of Rom manager. I bought it, installed it, and re-fired it up. The option is still greyed out.
Frustrated, I look for alternate methods. I found one that recommended Terminal and the flash_image script.
I tried doing this with the AmonRa recovery image (which I renamed to recovery.img on my SD card). I rebooted into recovery, but instead of ClockworkMod or AmonRa appearing, I just got the HTC logo with the white
background where it would ultimately freeze. I performed a hard reset and tried again. Same thing. I reboot, went into ROM Manager and tried flashing ClockworkMod 2.5.0.9. It said it installed, so I reboot into recovery. Same HTC Logo freeze.
Freaking out, I tried other solutions, involving one where I placed a script on my SDcard. From there, I would go into Terminal and type the following:
su
sh /sdcard/FR-flashRec-v03.txt
And after the 2nd or 3rd time trying this, I reboot my phone, and instead of going into recovery, it dumps me back into Fastboot. Every time I tried selecting Recovery from bootloader, it would take me to Fastboot. I'm freaking out about now. So I fired up Unrevoked, the tool I used to originally root my phone. After the 2nd attempt, it successfully flashed ClockworkMod back to my phone.
Relieved but still unsolved, I continue to look for a reason why I'm not able to flash a different recovery image. Then I found a thread which dates back to June 2010 and applied to the CyanogenMod 5.0.x Eclair build. There was a disclaimer that read:
DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER TO FLASH YOUR RECOVERY.
DO NOT USE flash_image SCRIPT TO FLASH YOUR RECOVERY IN THE LIVE SYSTEM.
So I figured the problem was with my current ROM. Sure, that referred to CyM 5.0.x, and I'm running 6.1, but there was no documentation saying that the issue had been fixed, and there weren't any other threads regarding my issue.
Not wanting to take a risk losing my current recovery, I restored a backup from my stock ROM I received from U.S. Cellular. I installed ROM Manager and tried to flash the recovery image via the "Flash Alternate Recovery". The option was once again greyed out. I bought premium again and still, the option is still greyed out.
Running out of ideas, I restored my CyanogenMod state I made before I did any changes. And this is where I am.
I'm running out of internal phone space rapidly.
[*]I don't know how to restore the partition I made to get my SD storage space back (in fact, since I made that partition, it's been slower).
[*]I don't know how I can flash AmonRa, or if it's even possible with CyanogenMod.
[*]I don't know how to use ADB shell.
I found a site that has a collection of AmonRa images, and for the Desire, they have the following: recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0-AW.img, recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0-CM.img, and finally recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0.img. I don't know which one I need to install for my HTC Desire CDMA.
If you've made it through this entire thread. Thank you. I really need some answers, and I don't know where else to look or to even ask. Can you please help me?
First of all making a ext partition won't magically provide more space, there is more behind it. See the second post in this thread under 'Still low storage for apps'.
And the partition made with rom manager should be fine however if you want something else use Gparted (can run of a linux live cd so no need to install anything)
For the restoring of the partition also use Gparted.
Not 100% sure but i believe that with unrevoked you can flash a alternative recovery image even if you are already rooted, but if you use Gparted there is no real reason for doing so.
For adb there are enough tutorials.
Hmm, many of these AmonRa releases are designed for HTC Desire GSM. Will these releases also work for CDMA devices?
Also, GParted will not work under Windows 7, and I don't use linux. All these other partitioning programs cannot detect the missing 1GB from my 8GB MicroSD. I have no idea how to restore it.

Desire Virgin

hello all had my desire for a good few months now, totally clean unbranded device. Now after quietly perusing these forums for a while i feel the next best thing i could do is flash it with a custom rom, i am drawn towards leedroid 2.3c, however i would like some advice first from the experts....All You.
is leeddroid a good stable rom with all the feature that i currently have on a stock desire?
what is the simplest way to flash?
do i have to do anything prior to a flash? ie backup anything, or make a backup of my stock system? if so how? i have xp in iphones and nothing needed to be done there just plug in and flash?
i need a simple guide
many thanks
Before you do anything, go to Settings>About phone>Software information and make a note of the 'Software version' number and post it up on here. We'll go from there...
android version 2.2
baseband version 32.49.00.32u_5.11.05.27
software number 2.29.405.5
Right, awesome. You're totally unbranded so that's a good thing!!
First thing, download the RUU for that ROM so you can go back to stock should you need to. Get it from:
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe
If that link fails to download then get it from:
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&so...Y-6AY_5A3EXnBSZIg&sig2=ToMSUjUY0tdbmxGYNI13-w
Or
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&so...cZlrId8Dkc9IAPJsg&sig2=upnnZhtKGWqyen3hhAeVvA
After that you can look at rooting the phone. I just re-rooted my phone on 2.29.405.5 using unrEVOked 3.31 and it work fine. You can get it here:
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
Once rooted, go look at the different ROMs available and take you're pick!!
There you go about rooting the phone from EddyOS.
Leedroid is a newbie friendly rom, it is stable, fast (faster than the original), has relatively better battery life than the original and everything is working, not to mention, it is also a Sense rom, just like your original rom.
So, yes! Leedroid is a good pick to start.
Note:
---- IMPORTANT----
1. The first thing you might want to do directly right after rooting is to create a nanddroid bckup and copy the bckup into your pc directly after creating it.. Do it before flashing, formatting, creating partition, or anything else.
---------END----------------
2. You might also need a card reader and a software such as partition wizard, gparted, or similar to create an EXT partition in your SD Card since most of the custom roms will need it. Create the EXT partition before flashing.
brilliant thanks for the links and tips, is there any particulat software i need to perform this "create a nanddroid bckup"
Once rooted the custom recovery has the nandroid function in it
Have a read of this, should help explain things:

Hey eddyos many thanks for taking the time to answer.
now i take it i do not need to make a gold card as my phone is unbranded, so my steps to take are :-
a. root...using unrevoked
b. nandroid backup...using clockworkmod recovery supplied with unrevoked
c. flash whatever rom i choose.
now once i have done step b. do i store this backup on my pc? if so whats it gonna be called and where will it be on the desire
in order to flash a rom, where do i put the rom i download to flash to the htc? on the memoery card?
once i have done c i am no longer able to get stock updates.
once i have done c do i need to set up anything so my phone can make calls or access the internet etc, or does it behave like a new phone out the box and you whack in the info it asks for ie google account stuff.
once again many thanks
The Nandroid is stored on your SD card. You can make a backup of this on your PC should you wish.
Once rooted you can no longer get OTA updates so you'd need to update your ROM as (and if) the dev does so
You download the ROM file and stick it anywhere on the SD card as you can browse for the ZIP in recovery.
The phone should go through a setup and automatically set the APN but if not you can manually add it using the operator details on their website
cool many thanks m8 for your time, now its just down to me to select a rom.
m last bit of info i need for now is looking in the android development bit there are various roms etc, some say rom, froyo sense, aosp kernal etc. been a novice/virgin i have no idea what these titles mean, i assume i should just stick to anything that has rom next to it?
is anyone able to reccomend a beginers rom that i can try out
? whats this all about?
create an EXT partition in your SD Card since most of the custom roms will need it. Create the EXT partition before flashing.
how big should the partition be? 512mb
As it has been said before Leedroid is a very good start. The latest version should be the Leedroid 2.3c.
Try that one out and play a little while before trying to flash other ROMs.
EXT partition is needed for A2SD/A2SD+ ROMs (do not play around with D2EXT/D2SD at the moment, you are not ready yet for this).
A2SD means Apps to SD, means more apps can be installed since they don't go to your very limited internal memory.
Make 2 partitions on your SD card but be sure to copy everything inside the SD card to your PC just to be sure before making arrangement for those partitions.
First create a FAT32 partition for your datas ( such as music, videos, etc.) as the first partition, set it as primary and then create a 512-2GB EXT2/3/4 (I recommend1GB EXT 2 or 3 at the moment) as the second partition, set it as primary.
Be sure to have the EXT partition after the FAT32.
Windows can only see the first partition, that is where you are going to put bck all the files you have copied from the SD card before making all of those partitions.
Interesting thread as I am considering doing the same. Main reason for me is the clash between HTC Sense and the bluetooth stack not allowing for a bluetooth keyboard. Any particular rom recommendations for this - Leedroid, Cyanogen?

FroYo = Android 2.2 (what you're currently on)
Gingerbread = Android 2.3
AOSP = Android Open Source Project )ROM built from the source code and now ported from another device)
As for EXT, I have a 1GB (1024MB) one and it serves me well
i am using leedroid for sometime now 512 MB EXT3-4 partition is more than enough i have 110 apps installed and still have 351MB free
once again many thanks for the replies.
what is the simplest prog to use to create the partitions? scrap that just used minitool partition magic i have an old 1gig card am gonna try will that be ok?
i have a fat32 partition size 533mb set as primary and a 362mb ext3 partition does it matter if the fat32 primary partition has a name?
looking at leedroid i think i need to install 2.3b before i can install the latest 2.3c
You can either do it in the recovery (I use Amon RA as mine but I think CWM does it too now). Otherwise you're better off downloading a GParted Live CD, boot your PC from that and then partition the card
When you're rooting Desire, have a look at good ol' turkeh's guide. Not only you have an excellent root tutorial, but you also learn how to properly flash ROMs, how to create and restore a system backup, how to backup apps, how to create ext partitions to enable app2sd and how to unroot the phone in case you need your warranty back.
Note: when performing the s-ff process (for data2sd), read carefully what it says and be aware that it can brick your phone if not done properly.
Turkey's guide is OK but is out of date somewhat, could do with updating to include the newer versions on unrEVOked

[Q] Partition SD card while still on phone?

I would like to partition my SD card in order to take advantage of memory tweaks like link2SD and dalvid2cache. I have read that you can use tools like Minitool partition wizard as well as some that are installed when you root your phone. Is there any way I can partition my SD card without having to take it out of the phone? It is kind of a pain to remove covers on the play just to get to the SD card. Besides, I worry that I might break the cover.
Also, I read somewhere that link2SD required non nand-locked (or S-off) to work. Is this true? Does this even apply to the play?
btw, I am using a rooted, stock 2.3.3 R800at
Mount the sdcard to Windows & run Minitool Partition Wizard. Resize the FAT32 partition & make an EXT4 partition of any size you'd like. Unmount it from from the PC & run Link2SD.
Link2SD doesn't require S-OFF for the Play.
To mount it, is it just the normal state when you plug in the usb cord to the PC? ie, mass storage mode? or do I need to unmount the sd card in settings somewhere first. Just want to make sure I get the order right.
What would a good size ext4 partition be on a 16 gb card?
Mass storage mode is fine. Doing so in CWM is probably better though since the OS isn't trying to access anything.
2~4GB should be fine.
Can I use CWM if I only have root? I haven't done anything other than just root via zergrush and use titanium to backup/remove a few apps.
Also, on sort of a side note, is there any program that will sync the contents of my SD card (all of them) with a corresponding folder on my PC? I know SD cards can die on you, so I would like to perform this sync on a regular basis to try and prevent phone throwing when the SD card dies.
ROM Manager.
I hate to be the guy that asks a lot of questions that should be obvious, but how does ROM Manager answer my above questions? I hope that doesn't come across as rude, I meant it from my ignorant standpoint. I looked up the app on Google Play, and it sounds like it is used for backing up your current ROM, loading new ones, and a couple of other ROM related features.

If you get CWM installed, you can mount the sdcard while in recovery.
Use SyncToy to do the syncing

What's the difference between Rom Manager and CWM? Thanks again!

ROM Manager = Android app that works with CWM. Installs CWM on phones that support it. Xperia Play isn't supported for CWM installation from the ROM Manager but the other features within it do work.
CWM = recovery image that boots when invoked via ROM Manager or at the bootloader/kernel.
Ah, so I use Rom Manager to invoke CWM-like functionality, one of which is to mount SD card when the system is able to access it, right?

No... you need to get into recovery mode to access CWM properly. The ROM Manager can reboot the phone to get into that mode.
I downloaded ROM Manager from the market. I see two options in ROM Manager that I think are what you are talking about. The first one is under Recovery->Reboot into Recovery. The second one is Utitilities->Partition SD Card. Can I just check the Parition SD Card option or do I need to Reboot into recovery first? Also, above Reboot into Recovery, there is an option which says "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. You must have the ClockwordMod Recovery installed to flash and restory ROMs!" But you said that the Xperia Play does not support this. I assume that I don't need to do this. (but, for future reference, I can't use ROM Manager to flash ROMs, right?)
First off, do I even need minitool Partition wizard if ROM Manager will do it for me using the Partition SD card option? Will that let me do ext4 as well as FAT32 and select differing sizes?
Second, if Partition SD card will not do what I want it to do, or do it fully, then what are the steps to do? My thought is plug phone into PC. Use ROM Manager to reboot into Recovery (using ROM Manager option). Once PC detects SD card, use Minitool Partition wizard to reformat/partition SD card with FAT32 for main portion and EXT4 for seperate portion for Link2SD use.
Will EXT4 also work for the dalvik2cache tweak?
Sorry for all of the questions and thanks again for all the help!
You need to have CWM installed that's made specifically for the Play. It CAN'T be installed from the ROM Manager.
Use this app to install it
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pvy.CWMinstaler
The Partition SD Card option will erase everything on the SD card & it creates a small EXT2 or EXT3 partition. I don't recommend using it.
Use the Minitool & do as I recommended earlier on...
Don't mix dalvik2cache with any sdext script... I recommend using Link2SD or mount2SD apps for utilizing the ext4 partition to move the dalvik-cache.
I will test these things out when I get home today, or maybe this weekend if I can't find free time before then.
One thing I noticed when I went to the thread mentioned in the Xperia CWM app is that in big red letters it says "Do NOT use this recovery if you are not using stock 2.3 firmware". I guess that means when ICS comes out from Sony, we won't be able to upgrade through ROM Manager, right? This also means that going from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 would be okay using this version of CWM, right?
Also, if I wanted to upgrade to a 2.3.4 build, then ROM manager is the way to go, right?
Thanks again!!
I can't use the ROM Manager with ICS until something changes. Upgrading through CWM is always possible though, just as long as you know that spamming the home key (about 10 times) at system startup will get you into it.
Yes, ROM Manager/CWM Recovery can take care of any upgrades that don't involve flashmode or fastboot mode (ftf, img, & sin files).
Thanks again for all of your help. I find myself having more questions about ROMs, but that is kinda hijacking my own thread. Plus, I don't think I am ready to flash any ROMs just yet. I don't know, it just makes me kinda nervous doing that, plus it is a big pain having to redownload all of my apps and setting things up again.
I will try and partition my SD card soon and report back with the results.
Use Titanium Backup to capture all of your settings with the apps. Quite simple to achieve.
All right, so I finally repartitioned my SD card. I had to use FAT32 for the second partition because Link2SD did not recognize the EXT4 partition. I did make the mistake of not putting it as primary, but I fixed this and it still didn't work.
It looks like all is working, but I can't seem to link the davlik cache over, though it acts like there is none. Could I clean up the davlik cache and would that make any problems? It just seems like there is still a lot of memory being used and I can't figure out where it is coming from.
