Hi,
I'm a newbie on this forum and hope you experts can help me with my question.
I have searched extensively, but cannot find the answer to my question although I am sure this must be a reasonably common one.
I have recently bought an HTC Desire from Vodafone in Germany (although I use English as the system language on the phone). The case is non branded, but the software seems to be (the Vodafone logo is shown on bootup and the phone tells me that the software version is 2.1-update1). I have nothing against Vodafone, but they still don't have a ROM available for Froyo and I would love to upgrade to that version.
I have found a nunmber of links, but would like to make sure I am not chasing a red herring here, so my quesitons are:
1. Do I really need to root the phone in order to install the ROM?
2. Can somebody help me understand which is the right ROM for me? I am looking for the standard HTC 2.2 for the Desire.
And here are the links I found:

Thanks to everybody who can help me,
Adrien
You do not need to root your phone to install RUU updates. This is only necessary for (most) custom ROMs.
This is the official 2.2 FroYo update:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...3.00.32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed.exe
You will however need to create a goldcard in order to install this, because you have a branded phone. This update will also un-brand your phone.
Hi Lunatic,
Thank you very much for your quick reply. I've found the instrauctions on how to create a gold card. Could you piint me to a link which explains how to install the ROM once I have the gold card ready please?
Thanks,
Adrien
1. Put the Goldcard in
2. Boot up the device
3. Start the exe
4. Follow the on-screen instructions
Hi ljesh,
Thaks for your reply: I love this forum!
Do you mean I need to copy the ROM on the gold card insert this one in the phone or should I start the exe from my desktop?
I apologise for being so slow.
Adrien
No, the ROM is in exe format. So after you follow my 2 (3) steps (create the goldcard - don't have to put anything in it, place it in the device, then boot it) just execute the saved file on your PC while the phone is connected through USB. A window like this (not exactly like that, it's just for illustration) will appear and you will need to tick some boxes, understand the risk (it will delete everything from your phone: contacts, sms messages, settings... EVERYTHING) of doing this and wait for the phone to update itself.

You need to run the .exe from your desktop, the setup will take care of the rest!
Make sure to backup your data tho, because this will erase everything on the phone!
Brilliant, thanks ljesh. Everything is clear.
Hi Lunatic,
Thanks a lot to you too. I have one last question - and I hate keep on asking -, but I tried downloading the rome from shipped-roms.com, but it's asking me for username and password. Where can I find these?
Thanks,
Adrien
username: shipped
password: shipped
Thanks EddyOS.
Guys you are seriously all great.
Now I'll get down to creating the gold card: I just wish there was a shortcut, the instructions I found (theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/) seem quite lonwinded
Thanks,
Adrien
Try this guide:
http://android.modaco.com/content/general-discussion/305672/creating-a-goldcard/
Longwinded, yes but it works (or I assume it does, never needed a gold card myself)
Thanks EddyoS, this seems clearer than the one I've found.
I'll report back as soon as I've installed the ROM.
Hi, just a quick message to confirm that I've managed to create the goldcard and to update my Desire. I also found this guide which I find easier to follow:

Thanks to all for your help.

The guide to create a Hero goldcard is not completely working anymore
Qmat delivered a new software called PSAS (link)
So also the website to create a goldcard via email is not working anymore.
What do i have to do now to create a goldcard? I just need one "just in case i ever need it"

when you gave me the same link, i re-opened it and it was still blank.......... until i scrolled way down.
Thank you for the reply!
Happy to help.
that website says that its a G1 goldcard..can it be used for the htc hero also?
EDIT: Nevermind found my answer already
How I can go back to stock rom from Three UK for Desire ? I founded some ROM, which I can start only from Windows, but it showing error that version isn't compatibile with my phone or something like that.
Now I'm flying on Froyo 2.2 + root.
Thanks in advance.
Hey,
You'll want to use the three RUU from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
As there is 2, you may need to try the other one.
A quick question though, have you made your SD card into a goldcard?
Hi,
yes I had gold card (I needed it to root my HTC and change firmware).
Nice and easy then, download the Rom from the link further up and just run the .exe and follow the easy on screen instructions.
(Can't remember for certain, but you have to reboot the phone in to Bootloader first when asked to connect the phone to the PC)

Put in the Goldcard and then run the official RUU (you can get one from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6703172&postcount=1)
It should let you install the stock 2.1. Then connect to wifi, go to settings->About Phone->System software updates and hit Check Now.
I did it that way, worked for me.
Thank you for the reply,
How can I be sure what is the ROM RUU that I need?
Hi AndroHero,
Can you please link me to the rooted versions you mentioned...

I used the WWE version (Link: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe). When i booted the 2.1 rom after going back to stock, I got options to choose the carrier so it could apply the internet and mms settings. Am on Voda UK. Didnn want to install the Voda ROM as i think voda always release the updates much later than the official releases. After setting up the 2.1, I did update and it worked.
Hi,
1. While installation i got an error message 171 (connection lost), it was waiting for the bootloader when it threw the error
2. I retried the whole process twice and the same thing happened.
Can any one assist me?
Thanks ahead.

Reboot the phone in fastboot mode, i think its press and hold the volume down button as you switch the phone on. then use volume keys to select fastboot and select it with the power button. When you leave this on there, run the RUU and it should work. WITH A GOLDCARD (IMPORTANT).
My desire is unlocked, why do I need a GOLDCARD?
I did exactly what you suggested. I moved it to fastboot but I still get the same
ERROR[171]:USB CONNECTION ERROR
This happens after the PC restart the device so it is not a 'physical Connection' issue.
I have my phone unlocked and the SIM working. From what I read, I need goldcard if I wan't to unclock my SIM...
Please advise
I successfully installed the RUU ROM, but I'm not getting the 2.2 OTA... What should I Do?
My phone is unbranded and unlocked, do I still need a gold card to restore to factory state for warranty purposes?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
If you purchased the Desire and it was on an x.xx.405.x software version then you don't need a gold card.
Don't people bother to actually absorb information as this is pretty n00b stuff...
I keep offering to help out with FAQs because this sort of information is not clearly stated. But thanks for letting me know. And I presume HTC read this forum and would know our tricks but apparently its still not a problem.

How would anyone know what version of the software his phone had when he purchased it? I, for instance, knew nothing of the "rooting world" when I got my unbranded unlocked desire, so now, after the OTA upgrade, I don't think I can retrieve that information: am I correct?
In order to absorb information, someone has to give it to you. The process is long (for some longer maybe), but I'm sure you were a n00b once and I hope nobody treated you this way.
Luca
That is correct but if you'd read all threads/information logic would dictate that perhaps it's wise to make a note of what it comes with out the box and make sure you have a back up route in case things go pear shaped/need to be reversed. If all you've done is root the phone and not flashed a ROM then you can still check but if you're now on a custom ROM then you're kinda screwed (unless you just wanna be on an unbranded ROM then you can obviously so this).
Easy way of at least finding out if you're branded or not is to just try and flash a stock WWE RUU without a gold card - if it completes then you're unbranded
Yes, I was a n00b once (Android n00b April this year) but I didn't ask any questions - I just lurked and read other posts and learnt by others mistakes and only asked if I wasn't sure what I was doing. I've had previous mobile phones and so knew about checking version numbers so always make sure I know what I have before trying anything like rooting (or the equivalent term for other makes)
Thank you Eddie.
As a matter of fact, I haven't rooted the phone yet: still in the info gathering stage as I just purchased the phone a month ago. I come from "stupid" phones so never had this problem/opportunity before.
I know for a fact that my phone is not branded, but I don't know:
1) which is the software + radio I should download to restore my phone in case I don't like what I get with rooting;
2) which rom to install: in this specific case, the more you read, the more you get confused. I read some people installing the same rom and one saying it is slower than Luancher Pro + stock rom, others that claim that it is faster than anything they've ever tried (and, mind you, they are talking about the same rom!)
3) last but not least, all guides I found in Italian are relative to using unrevoked with windows 7, while I still run xp and it seems that xp poses some additional problems. I just created a virtual machine on my pc to start using ubuntu, but I never even seen the thing!
However, thanks for the help and sorry about being a little snappish in my previous post. I guess we all approach this problem with different attitudes: some would like it to be a real one-click easy procedure and so keep on asking until they find somebody who does it for them!
Ciao
Luca
Yeah I agree to anti-n00b remarks are getting really old. I'm sure many of us have tried searching threads and doing the right thing, so can we all just get over it? I've offered 6 times now to help create FAQs and not one of the anti-n00bs has offered to help.
Anyway, so I understand then that for those with unbranded / unlocked phones it is a simple matter to restore to factory state. Just thinking in case the USB connector broke or something, which worries me a lot because often connections are rather wobbly although I'm not sure how much that has to do with cheap cables or what.
First off, Yes I have searched more than this site for an answer to the point where my handset would not do anything but go into the recovery menu.
What I want to do is put stock HTC Android on my Desire.
Currently it is rooted but has to be un rooted to go onto works E Mail server. Yes I know it makes no difference but my employer insist on official firmware on handsets.
The handset is a GSM HTC Desire (Bravo)
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP 2-ON

CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY v2.5.0.7
I have tried several RUU's only to be told of a boot loader error.
Can some one please tell me how this is done?
I asked my network and they could not help so unless some one can help me im going to have to ask HTC.
THANKS in advance

Hi,
I've seen a few posts that refer to getting the HTC ROM changing it's name to PB99.img (or similar or ...) Then reoot the phone. Try searching the forums for this type of solution. I'm sorry but can't remember where I saw it in here.

Hmmm,
How would they know if the HTC Sense ROM just happened to be rooted. One could argue that the ROM was a valid HTC ROM. I know it's semantics but ...
The "About phone" would still show HTC as the ROM.
There must already be a variety of ROMs on HTC desires already used in your company.
The Clockwork recovery would give it away mate.

This might work for you Not sure if you have tried it but try again
WAIT, BEFORE YOU START, CREATE A GOLDCARD. IT IS VERY NECESSARY. THINGS WILL GO WRONG IF YOU DONT.
Firstly, download this file. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13240777/Desire Downgrade.ZIP
Extract the files.
Run the win-down.bat file.
Follow on screen instructions.
After the process is completed, Head to the root of your SD card and check if there is a file named PB99IMG, there should be one.
Secondly, disconnect your phone and turn it off. (MAKE SURE PHONE IS CHARGED TO AT LEAST 70%++
After that boot up your phone while pressing the volume down button and the power button.
The bootloader should be checking for files after awhile and once it found the file that is supposed to be in the root of your sd card, press the volume up button (NOT EXACTLY SURE, SHOULD BE THE ONE THAT SAYS YES AND CONTINUE)
It should be writing files to your phone. and replaces everything. E.G: HBOOT, RECOVERY,RADIO and such.
It should be writing files successfully and then it would ask you to reboot. Continue with the reboot and you should be having your Desire back to stock. Perfect.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE ARE RISKS INVOLVED LIKE FAILURE OF WRITING TO THE HBOOT. PLEASE REMEMBER TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. MAINLY, DO NOT BLAME ME FOR ANYTHING THAT GOES WRONG.
FINALLY, YOU SHOULD BE READING EVERYTHING UP TO HERE AND THAT YOU MUST HAVE A GOLDCARD (A GOLD SD CARD)
Hope this helps you and please ask if you have further questions. PM me if the questions cannot be answered here. Good Luck

Yup, "ERROR 140:BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR" The only time you can put a lower bootloader version is when you have a gold card.
The above method posted by Shockem should work. A second method is to just put a gold card in your device and get the latest WWE RUU. Check my signature for the file. Once a gold card is in, it will work. Note that this method unbrands your device, so if you a branded device with visible logos, dont go for this.
Third method is by flashing the OTA zip file you got from your operator if you have it. Again gold card should be in the device. But is is likely that it may also work without since CustID is same. Advantage: preserves branding
So do I still need a gold card even though my device is rooted?

Certainly.........
Point is you say you've tried several RUUs and they dont work..Hence we have to assume it's a branded phone. HTC even brands some phones with the brand HTC (Eg Indian HTCs). To unroot a branded HTC, you need a goldcard.
i had same problem, i was trying for days till i rememberd that i can downgrade hboot, install android 2.1 and ota update froyo. ( if your desire wasnt branded you dont need goldcard). problem was that i couldnt find stock froyo, only eclair
this thread helped me :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
i hope it helps
Point is some people (including me in the past) dont realize that they have a branded phone. There may not be any visible branding. So better be safe than sorry, by creating a goldcard.. Once the device if bricked, you cant (in most cases) create a goldcard
Thank you all so much.
I'll be doing this tonight.

haha, no problem we're all here to help by the way which method did you use?
PLEASE STICKY IF THIS IS HELPFUL!!!
ALSO ON THE HTC ONE V FORUM (since this phone is like a hybrid of that and this, the desire....and doesn't have it's own dedicated forum hahaha)
Hello Everyone, just yesterday I was messing with gapps on my HTC t328w (since it's a chinese phone, it didn't not come with gapps, so I had try to flash them myself) and I made some mistakes, which basically ended up soft-bricking my device (unable to update gapps since I had merged the entire system folders instead of just copying system/app), and it would not boot to the home screen.
After looking for a while I had found the RUU for this phone, however, the .exe just did not work for me, it wouldn't detect my phone (maybe incorrect drivers, but I can't be sure of that as my phone was rooted using the same computer)...
So after some thinking and working stuff out, I came up with method (well, at least for this phone, it has been done for other phones before), so I present you...
HOW TO UNBRICK THE HTC T328W DESIRE V (HTC WIND FROM CHINA UNICOM
What you need
-The phone, obviously (try to have battery above 30%)
-***RELOCKED*** bootloader
-The RUU found here (download the .exe) (Thank you island3r!)
-Micro SD card
Ok!~~~
Let us begin...
1.) Run the RUU exe file, and when it's done preparing, go to start > run, and type in %temp%, you should see the temp folder pop up...
2.) In the temp folder, look for the file with the longest name (that was my qualitative observation, needs clarification~!), and scroll down and find rom.zip
3.) Rename rom.zip to PL11IMG.zip, and transfer it to the root of your micro sd card (with the adapter in your computer, as you can't with your phone...since it's bricked...)
4.) Take the micro-sd card out of your computer, slide it in your phone, and boot into HBOOT (volume down + power button).
5.) When you are at the hboot screen, press the down button once, you should see the phone scan the SD card, it will say in about 5 - 10 seconds "PL11IMG.zip found....checking.....loading", there is a vertical progress bar on the top right side of the screen so you can be sure that it's not frozen or something...
6.) After it is done checking, it should bring up a menu to update and say press vol+ for YES and vol- for new, we need to flash this update/restoration so press the the volume up button...
7.) It will do something for about a minute, and go BACK to boot loader, repeat step 5 and 6 (this happened to me, I really don't know if this will happen to others...someone please test this?)
8.) Now that you have said YES to update the second time, wait about 10 minutes (you can watch the progress bar too), and it will say "update completed, press power to reboot"
9.) Reboot, and your phone is good as new!!!!* ^______^
*I mean it when I say that, it is literally good as new; it will wipe everything, and you need to activate your phone again and set up and all that stuff
I NEED TESTERS AND CONFIRMERS....HELP ME OUT WITH THIS METHOD PLEASE
Hope you found this helpful! Post if you have any comments, concerns, or any thing that should be added on (this is my first guide hahaha )
I cannot execute as above as i never get to step #6.
----------------
My T328W came with OS version 1.35.
Recently it got an OTS update to 1.56.
This happened while i was in process to unlock boot-loader, root the phone, and begin installation of gaps.
Now the phone seems to be in "NEVER NEVER land". I cant do much with it. WIFI and Bluetooth are not working.
I can readily lock and unlock the boot-loader.
The security is on. S-ON.
I want to go back to 1.35 (factory shipped version) but cannot as different errors come up when trying ton install RUU. I do have the original version RUU it shipped with.
There seems to be much confusion as to how install this orignal RUU. S-ON or should it be OFF. How do i turn it OFF.
BASICALLY
I want to get the phone completely back to shipped version. So then i can begin the root, and gaps installation.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Helpful guide
it works. Thank you.
how do you install Google Play in your chinese Version (China Unicom) T328W, build 1.35.1402.1?
This method would not work for device which have HBOOT 1.14.0002 and S-ON (device which have received 1.56.1402 release OTA update). Mind one got this and when I flash the zip, the phone say "HBOOT is older" cannot update.
I see someone in androidforum post that there is a method to flash only system, data and recovery (what he call mini-RUU) but I dont know whether it work or not if I fash 1.35.xxx rom to my newer HBOOT device.
If someone have experience could help me confirm it, I am sorry that I am hersitated to test myself cause I dont have any backup rom for my device, I am scare if it would soft-brick my device (it's currently have and missing feature rom - missing notification bar, but at lease it still work and allow my to whatsapp with my wife). Please help.
