Have you tried these tweaks to "stabilize" your connection-reconnection....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7260880&postcount=66
There are a few others too if you do search on 4g connection.
Jim

yeah, Jim, my 4g connection was perfect before, as I had done all these tweaks a long time ago..
this only started yesterday, after rooting my EVO using unrevoked 3
everything else works great, its only this issue came up..
thanks for your suggestion, though.

Did you use the latest beta unrevoked 3? In other words did you root a froyo 2.2 Evo?
If so, you need to report this to the unrevoked team through the official unrevoked beta testers site. There are no mentions of this on their site as of yet.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

yes, I did use the latest beta unrevoked 3, and had reported a different bug to them.
what makes this so bizarre, I just took the phone into a different room in my house, and was able to turn off 4G; i tried this 20 times today, and it did nothing, but when I went into my wife's office, and asked HER to try it, it did it.
creepy; unless the phone was afraid of her..
hope it keeps I will reboot a bunch of times to confirm

Assume you have a nand backup...next step may be a hard reset. :-(

[Q] 4G turning on and off, slowing down phone

So I wanted to try out different kernels yesterday. I'm rooted using the Stock ROM.
My phone was already running netanarchy's 4.1.9.1 with no problems, but I wanted to try out King's kernel BFS #8 as well as #6. I did a cache and dalvik wipe prior to each flash. In the end, I deemed that I personally like netanarchy's kernels more, so I switched back to 4.1.9.1.
However, now my 4G keeps turning on and off. This is causing my phone to significantly lag in intervals correlating with the on and off of the 4G toggle. Is it possible that flashing different kernels somehow borked my wimax radio?
Any help is much appreciated.
Is it anything like I described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8052344
I'm having this issue and I never even rooted my phone. Note my latest reply that I did a hard reset on one of the evo's and now the 4g radio hangs on "turning on..." when I try to turn it on. Still seeing that now. Considering doing the unrevoked 3.2 to root it and try to fix it since sprint is clueless on the issue.
Yea, it is similar to your issue. I found your thread after I posted mine. I tried updating to the latest Wimax update found on XDA and that helped somewhat.
My 4G stays on, scans, and says connecting to Sprint network. However, it never successfully connects. I now believe I have the dreaded MAC address problem and am now trying to fix it.
I can't even see my 4G MAC address because I can't get the 4G radio to turn on. How else can I check whether my keys are screwed up (without being rooted)?
try dialing ##3282# and select view mode. Go to WiMax and look under NIA. That should have the MAC address.
If it does not match what is listed on your box, then your MAC addresses do not match.

You gotta be rooted to do that. As for your keys getting hammered, the key issue arises on rooted phones after a bad flash, or corrupted radio file. More than likely your keys are fine. Let me ask you this, have you previously have 4G working, and it just stopped working? Or you now just tried to use it, and it's not working?

Yes, it used to work. I picked up signal around the boston area a month or two ago (before boston officially had 4g). I can't remember whether I used 4g successfully after the 2.2 upgrade. I was part of the group that did the .3 leaked 2.2 update and then took the .3 to .6 update OTA. I have never rooted this phone.

There is no WiMax option when I do this. I think the WiMax radio needs to be switched on to see this. But I can't get the radio to turn on.
I've been using alogcat to try to debug the issue. I see this error come up about 90 seconds after trying to enable 4G (this is the same time the "turning on..." changes to "Unable to start 4g"):
E/WimaxStateTracker( 104): Failed to load Wimax driver -=>wl.release
I haven't been able to find any information about what this might mean.
same problem here; ever since running unrevoked 3 the other day, my evo 4g keeps turning 4G on and off by itself, and, wont let me stop it from doing that..
its killing my battery with its constant searching, and I cant find any sort of "tweak" that will allow me to just shut it off or leave it on; the widgets dont do it, so I cant figure out how to stop it..
was working fine before this..
On stock 2.2 froyo, stock kernel...
any ideas?
thanks!

Ok you may have hammered your 4G then. I've heard of a couple of people who took the leaked update, and fouled up their 4G. I would suggest you backup your stuff then run the latest RUU to see if that clears things up with the wimax driver not loading. If not take the phone to Sprint.

i read the thread you started about this issue. you mentioned you were having trouble breaking the on/off loop but then mentioned your wife somehow was able to do it. while in the on/off loop, did you find that the the radio was actually spending any time "scanning" after it turned on? on one of my evos, the phone would switch from on to off and back to on so quickly, the button was always grayed out in the wireless menu so i could never interrupt it. on my other evo, it would spend a little time scanning ( a second or 2), which was enough time to press the button so the 4g would turn off for good and break the on/off loop. a hard reset fixed the phone with the unbreakable loop (4g now works). a hard reset caused the other phone to change so that 4g just hangs at "turning on..." when i try to toggle it on.

By running the latest RUU, do you mean perform the latest OTA sprint update (the .6) by putting in on my SD card and doing the volume down/power button trick? Is this safe if I already have the update applied? I was considering doing this but wasn't sure if it would be safe to do.

is it possible??

Hey guys, I have had a problem recently devolop on my phone, regarding 4g. First, I will start by saying that I have read just about everything I can read regarding broken 4g, but find nothing pertaining to my specific issue. Secondly, is there anyone is the Las Vegas area having issues connecting to 4g? Next, here is quick run down of the issue. I use 4g daily, all the time. I have never had an issue with it. I am currently using Myn's warm two point two, RLS2, on kings #11. Never had an issue with 4g, no matter what ROM i've used actually. I have NEVER flashed a wimax update. I have flashed a radio update, maybe a month ago or so. So I was tethering while on 4g, and I downloaded a modified "sexy" rosy, with the browser button on it. I then booted to recovery, wiped cache and davlik, then flashed the rosie zip and rebooted. Everything seemed fine, rosie worked, and all was well. Then I went to turn on 4g, and it won't connect. Just says scanning, connecting to sprint, disconnected, scanning, connecting to sprint, disconnected. After trying a billion times, once I got it to connect, for about 10 seconds, i had great 4g signal (as i always did prior to this) then it kicked back to 3g, and was continuing its scanning loop. So i restored my nandroid backup (which I made right before I flashed that rosie zip, while 4g was working) and I still have the same problem. So, my question is, is it possible to screw up the RSA keys, having not even flashed a wimax radio update? Or am i just experiencing some insane coincidence, that this started happening immediately after flashing that rosie zip. I am not sure how much troubleshooting i should put into this, seeing as I dont see how its possible that flashing that zip could've screwed up my 4g RSA keys. I am not sure how to figure out if it's my phone or sprint's network that is the problem. I have read some threads on how to check if the RSA keys are still in tact, which I will probably try to test that later, but I have never used a command prompt, or ADB shell before. I guess it's time for to read up on that and learn how to do it. I get confused about if I'm supposed to be doing these commands from the phone or my PC. Does anyone have any opinions, suggestions, ideas, insight? Anything? Any pointers would be super appreciated. Thanks fellas.
Sounds like 4g network went down. Can't be anything else if you were able to actually connect even though it was only for a brief moment.

Thanks for the reply. That is certainly what I am hoping. I used root explorer to look at my MAC address, via data/misc/wimax and the number it provides me with matches the number under my battery, so I believe that is a good thing. One of the post's I read, regarding this issue, said to rename that number (xxxxxxx.tree.xml) to xxxxxxxx.tree.xml.old. I'm not exactly sure what that will do, or if I should try it. I am hesitant to play with things I dont know about (yet). Any further suggestions or opinions? If I were to call sprint, would they tell me if 4g was down in my area? We did have 4 straight days with some pretty insane and sporrattic lightning storms. Perhaps something got damaged.
thanks
So it turns out 4g is down near my house. I'm on 4g right now, just in a different part of town. Sorry for wasting the thread space. Thanks again

Issues connecting to 4g

So idk what exactly is going on but last night I tried turning on my 4g and when it actually turned on it immediately turned back off...then I tried rebooting the phone and seeing if that helped but the same thing...then I tried doing a little research and I come to find that people have been losing their RSA keys and breaking their 4g...so I ran android ask and checked my wimax via adb and everything seemed as though it was there landing the right place (no errors) but I still have no 4g...now if I'm not mistaken I upgraded a few radios, including baseband and wimax, and I heard there have been connection issues with flashing those as well, but not "broken" 4g...so I'm just looking for a little direction I guess...I'm running Myn's warm rls4 rom and using netarchy 4.1.9.1 kernel (if the even matters) and when I go to check my 4g MAC address it says unavailable...can anyone point me in the right direction...I don't use 4g a lot cus I'm just outside of a 4g area but still, its the EVO "4G" and I would like to make sure it stays that way...if you know what I mean ;-)...any help is appreciated

To check your 4G MAC address, you need to first have your 4G radio on.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9663192#post9663192
Read that to check your RSA keys and troubleshoot whether or not you have hosed your keys. If you lost your RSA keys, then there is no way ATM to get it back short of returning your phone for a replacement.
Did you update your profile after flashing the new radios?

yea i always update my PRL and my Profile after flashing new radios but still same thing...i only just now found out there was a problem tho cus i don't use it too often and when i went to use it, it wouldn't stay on and scan for a signal.
sorry btw for the late reply
EDIT: would going back to a different WiMax radio version help? i would try it without asking but i'm afraid to ACTUALLY lose my RSA keys so yea.
I'm having the same exact issue...any updates?
I'm in the same boat. I had to take my day 1 EVO (hardware 0002) to a Sprint store on Christmas Eve as I dropped it flat on its face and shattered the screen last week. Although I figured it wouldn't be an issue, rather than risk a small chance that they wouldn't repair under the TEP and $500, I went ahead and unrooted and returned to S-ON and loaded the new stock RUU.
So that moved me from HBOOT .97 to the new 2.10 - I then used the handy root guide for 2.10 and was able to re-root and S-Off without any problem, but my 4G would not connect (it comes on, shows scanning, but won't connect). It did connect a couple of times, but then dropped and have not been able to reconnect at all. Wife has an Epic so know a strong 4G signal is working at home.
I've tried the tree.xml trick and also checked to make sure I still have RSA keys which I do (even backed them up after checking again today). I've reflashed the latest radios, updated profile and PRL numerous times. Nothing working. 4G worked perfectly before I unrooted, and after I unrooted (with stock RUU). It was only after re-rooting with the 2.10 thread that this happened. I have not flashed any recovery other than the modified Amon-Ra since the Hboot update.
Wondering if anyone has unrooted, then re-rooted and been able to reconnect to 4G. I may give it a try - just didn't want to go through the trouble again if it doesn't work.
Just an update if anyone else is having trouble with 4G. I had previously used Myn's rom and stock, but since Myn's wasn't updated for the new radios yet I just flashed the sprint lovers Rom in zikronix's 2.10 thread, then tried out Azreal 3.0 (which I really like) - it was in both those ROMs that 4G would not work for me.
I just flashed back to deodexed stock rooted zip of 3.70.651.1 and 4G works again!

[Q] 3G slow to respond

Hey everyone, I'm new here to the forum and have had my EVO for about 6 months now. First things first, I have searched quite a bit and havent really found problems specific to mine on here or google. Maybe I am just not searching for the right thing so bare with me please. A few months after I got it, I started realizing the 3g would take a long time to respond sometimes. For example, I would type in a web address and hit go and the 3g icon on the status bar would not do anything for sometimes up to 1 minute causing the browser to display (page not found). Other apps that require internet do this as well. One day I decided to do a factory reset and the problem went away. After a few weeks, it came back so i did another reset and fixed it. Now back to the same old problem. Finally got tired of doing resets so I'm trying to find out the real solution to the problem. I constantly clean the cache. Previously I did it manually, but now I use cache cleaner which seems to do a good job. I have also tried speed boost lite which doesnt do a bad job either but uninstalled since i like cache cleaner better. Profile and PRL updates help only for a short time even though it didnt really update after checking software versions. I've taken the phone to sprint, they've checked it out, said its fine, and that 10-30 seconds is normal and nothing to complain about. Maybe that would be the case if it was NORMAL but it is not. Has anyone heard of this or have any ideas to fix it? Sorry for all of the reading but if you have any advice at all, it is greatly appreciated. Thanks
Cameron
Well there 3g service is down the drain right now and the lack of good ping could be the reason so my guess is 3g sucks it happens to my evo a lot so I use wifi and 4g when I can

Thanks for your reply. I'm am happy with the 3G most of the time. At my house, it is almost as fast my wifi (no i dont have slow internet at home either lol). I have no problem streaming HQ Pandora, youtube, and netflix in crystal clear quality on 3G. It is not the network, it is an issue with the phone, a setting, or an app that is causing the problem. If I was to factory reset the phone right now, the problem would go away. I just dont want to reset it anymore and have to reinstall everything. Time to try to figure out the real problem and stop taking the lazy way around
That is weird could be your phone you could back up your apps with titanium backup and restore away or try to unroot then reroot

i just reset, I did forget to mention in the OP that i am not rooted. Haven't gotten the balls to do it yet. I haven't found a good thread to read up on to root yet. Not that i've been looking that hard. I would like to root very soon though
Best way to root I think is unrevoked you need a computer but its easy as pie there are also guides on YouTube

ya i tried that before but every time i try something goes wrong and i cant do it. Even when i follow videos my phone just doesnt do the same thing as theirs for some reason. lol who knows
Just for ****s and giggles I gave it another go on rooting with unrevoked. Actually got it this time. I have no clue what happened last time. Went smoothly this time. So just basic root, nothing fancy. All i really wanted out of the root was wireless tether. Still want to figure out the unresponsive 3G issue though before it happens again
Glad to hear your on the dark side (rooted) you can learn a lot just by being rooted
evo on cm7
Ya its nice so far but the reset did not fix the unresponsive 3G. Ugh its so annoying! Nobody has any ideas?!
Flash your first rom and do a nandroid
evo on cm7
I am now running cm7 nightly build 83 off of rom manager. I love it!
I'm not having the 3g issue now. Internet seems much faster on this rom

[Q] I got s-on, but really want to flash the new radio!!!

Hello all.
First time poster. You guys got a great site here, you do great work. I need some help....
First, I'll tell you what I'm working with...
HTC EVO 4G
CM 7.2 Rom
anom ra recovery 4.3 smelkus by team dirt (before I started experimenting I had clockworkmod 5.0.2.2 recovery, but will stick with amon ra now)
HBoot-2.18.0001
Radio-2.15.00.12.19
What I've been trying to do is flash the new radio. Every road I go down leads to a dead end.
-I've tried going back to the sense rom and accepting the system update, it wouldn't update for me
-I've tried downloading a sense rom and flashing that, it flashed, but offered no firmware updates
-I've tried renaming the radio update file to PC36img,zip and going to the bootloader, but I have that dreaded S-on so it wouldn't take
-I've tried installing from zip in the recovery, that wouldn't work
I've tried several other things over the past couple of days. But, due to being frustrated (sometimes to the point of being close to vomiting), it is all running together right now and is difficult to outline each thing I tried right now.
Most things I've seen say I need S-off to do this. But, then I google the steps involved in getting my s-off, and that seems like such an insane and convoluted process that I think there HAD to be a better way out there. (I don't know why the unrevoked people wont make a product that works with the hboot 2.18.0001, but that's neither here nor there). I've also seen threads referencing relocking and then unlocking the phone again...those are months old. Someone has to have a better way by now.
Basically, I am having a very difficult time wrapping my head around the concept that this can't be done with an S-ON phone either through the recovery or through the ADB. There's got to be a way. What is it I'm missing?
Before anyone asks, here's why i want to do it...
Both me and my wife's phones have radio 2.15.00.12.19. We're constantly getting 1x no matter what we do. A few days ago, I rooted a friend's phone. Same phone, same rom, but I noticed he is getting 3G. I investigated, and he has radio 2.15.00.01.15. Since I would like for me and the wife to have our 3G back, naturally I'd like to get this radio flashed.
I have the new radio and it made zero difference in anything
Getting S-off is not that hard. Just follow directions. My 10 year old nephew can do it.
To be clear, you *must* have S-OFF to flash radios.
You're *sure* your friend has the "same ROM"?
Because the most obvious explanation for your heartburn is that Sprint often *does* drop any given phone (regardless of radio ) down to 1x: CM based ROMs accurately report this, while most stock or stock-based ROMs just ignore it and report "3G" all the time.
Is this really your only reason for switching radios?

First questions:
Yes, absolutely certain. I even used the same downloaded file to flash his as I did mine and my wife's.
Your second paragraph...yeah, I've been reading that. But, I'm thinking that "You can't win if you don't play" and I have to try something.
And, yes, this is my only reason for wanting to switch radios.

If I'm not mistaken, there's a way to change your network priority settings.
For instance, If you're on Boost Mobile, Sprint has a lower priority for these devices to maintain a better service for its higher paying Sprint customers.
I've never changed these network settings myself, so some one else might help you if this is your issue.

Hey, other thing to consider is that Sprint is upgrading the network in your area. My experience in the las 6 weeks was that during the day on monday thru friday the data signal was awful, switching from 3G to 1XX and sometimes all day in 1XX. Check if there's a pattern when you have no data or is bad.
Now I have awesome data speeds even in 3G, I mean, in PR standards
Cheers
unfortunately, it has been constant 1x since I flashed the roms (CM7.2 for both of ours, several roms on mine alone but I'm back to CM7.2 now).
My wife has observed that she doesn't notice a difference, positive or negative, with her data speeds. I have to say that I have observed the same. I am really starting to believe that Sprint has deliberately mislead us with their 3g icon in the stock rom. If this is indeed true, isn't this like...you know...a crime or something?
you're on a Sprint PRL right? (I've noticed whenever I force CM to roam on "affiliated networks" all my data is 1x)
Sprint should give you 3G at least sometimes, CM or not. Have you observed this outside of your usual home area?

If by "home area" you're referring to geography, since I've flashed my rom I haven't left town really. Just work, home, and the usual errands. If you're referring to Sprint vs. Competitors...I don't know. My network system select was on home only. I have now set it to automatic. I'll toggle airplane mode and see how that does, I guess.
Maybe this is one of those occasions where updating your PRL and profile would be useful?
(Just to remind, this can only be done from a Sense ROM, so you may want an expert to chime in before you spend any time making a nandroid, flashing (or nandroiding back to) a Sense ROM, doing the update, and restoring back to CM)

tried it. About four days ago (give or take a day) I flashed back to my rooted stock rom. I attempted to update it. It would download, but on the reboot it would hang and give me a picture of the green little android guy standing next to a big triangle with an exclamation point in it. I googled and googled and googled, but could not find an answer as to why. I reattempted that about three times, same result each time.
So, I downloaded a stock rom (rooted) and updated the PRL successfully, profile successfully, tried to update firmware but told there was none, and I didn't try update the rom itself of course. Of course the sense rom told me I had 3g, but when I flashed back to CM7.2, same thing...the 1x.
That android with the red triangle typically means your recovery has been deleted.
