Thinking of buying the Desire. Some advice maybe? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. I was thinking of buying this phone after being very dissapointed in galaxy S. So if one of you can spare a few minutes to answer some of my concerns, it would be a very good deed.
1. is the space enough for installing apps (galaxy s had 2 Gb for this)? Can we maybe move the apps on the card?
2. can you direct me to the latest ROM (with Froyo) not cooked , no modded, the plain simple one? And to some installation instructions? (I would search but really dont know how the naming is for the roms and which one is newest)
3. is there any app that allows this phone to play avi and xvid?
4. if the phone is locked is there any unlocking method? If the phone is locked, can I still upgrade it to the latest rom? (even if the rom is not designed for my carrier)?
I guess this is all I need to know.
Thank you very much for your time.

froyo comes with legacy apps2sd but its not very good, if you root you can install apps2sd+ witch is much better, rockplayer will play almost all video formats ive tried, its like vlc for android lol if you look at the android development section there is a sticky with all the latest official roms. if your device is sim locked you must buy an unlock code to unlock it, you can use any rom with a locked device although if your device is branded you must make a goldcard before you flash a generic/branded (other than your own branding) offical rom.

Thanks for the quick reply. Now I only need to know what a gold card is.

there is a tutorial in the rom development section, it basically skips the cid check so you can flash branded or generic roms

Ok thanks man.

[Q] Am I asking for too much?

Hi guys,
I love my Desire HD, I really do. Great phone. I get asked all the time what make it is... very nice owning it... BUT I hate Orange UK and their pesky interfering with the ROM. Some things just plain don't work.
So (and I have looked) there are lots of ROMs out there that I can Flash, but it's all very confusing to me.
What I need clear guidance on is:
1. Can I get a nice clean Genuine HTC Rom on it (with Sense)?
2. Will that give me OTA updates to Gingerbread or any future upgrades?
Sorry, but I seem to only find Mod guidance on here, but Im one of those people who like to put things back the way they were designed to be... (Im that sad...)
Ta for any help you can offer

1. Yes, if you just want stock rom you can root your UK branded Rom (if its base 1.72 you have to downgrade first check this guide, thats what i used and there's also a link to a downgrade guide in it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964996) get S-OFF and install the official RUU (R om U pdate U tility) from 2.3.3. Or when you have root and S-OFF you can flash Clockworkmod recovery (the thing you need to flash any custom made stuff) and from there any custom rom you like. This is recommended because with it you can backup your current branded Rom in case you need to have it repaired and still want to be under warranty.
2. With official RUU you will get future OTA updates directly from HTC, but when you install 2.3.3 RUU you're already up do date. When you have a Custom Rom you will get updates from your rom Chef that you download over wifi/3g directly to your phone and flash it through Clockworkmod recovery

This is stock rom with improvements. Look at the features list, it will convince you I'd say its the most popular custom rom and a good point to start.
btw Orange is the best provider in terms of Data plans in my country. You get most out of your money. But the branding and support is horrible They have absolutely no clue what their talking about. When i asked them if my DHD was branded when i bought it the sales assistant didnt even know what that is... She had to ask someone else first. If thats the same in UK you're on a good way with installing the Rom YOU want. You'll get support here from guys that do even better than the guys from HTC. Believe me.
I've only ever met one sales assistant who knew what I was talking about, I felt strangely attracted to her...
I've tried a few roms and settled on cm7 for now, best thing to do is junk the stock rom and get flashing, the improvements in battery life should be enough to convince you lol

Thanks guys, this is really helpful....
The thing that tipped me over the edge was a trip to my local Orange Shop, where I went to get some answers as to why the Hot Spot feature wasn't working on the phone. I then had to spend 10 minutes explaining to the girl what the hotspot feature was, then DEMONSTRATE it to HER!
Orange guys must have been tinkering with the rom. Tethering and hotspot options worked out of the box for me but you better switch to a custom rom to get those features back and other goodies. Besides, it's funny .
Yep, like all the others recommended custom rom is the way forward. I was in your position before I started the flashing madness, I can promise you, you wouldn't regret it.. And we are so lucky to have such an active development section...
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Yep if you follow all the instructions it is nigh on impossible for anything to go wrong. Even if it does however, due to the active forums, you will get an answer in no time!
Don't do it, once you start you can't stop flashing save yourself and run away while you can
On a serious note, the battery life improvement and virtual 24hr help with this forum are good enough reasons on there own to do it, you won't regret it...
Ok Guys.... I'm gonna give you a laugh.
I've had my DHD since March (from Orange) and like all of you I am now not happy with (what you state is Stock ROM)
At the very tender age of 53yrs and now burnt our with computing and the like I rarely understand all the lingo/terms used Etc ;((
After calling on a phone 'expert' shop yesterday and was willing to shed cash if they could root & flash (presumably after de-branding) I saw the blank expression on their face.... "Nope... we don't know what your talking about"
Hmmm (I thought) So now I am determined to scare myself to death and ATTEMPT to get my phone to where it should be! But I am SOOoo lost on all the termanology used.
I am on 2.2.1
Kernal 2.6.32.21-g46445e7
Build 1.84.61.2
At the present time I am running on SPB 3D and have Laucher Pro installed as I was exerimenting with home page mods.
Still awaiting Ginger and can't see me getting it from Orange (UK) for any time yet. Phone does som curios things at times and seems to be getting buggy.
Phone calls drop, incomming second caller now boots me from my original call, icons vannish Etc.
Oh... Not keen on all this Facebook lark which the stock Orange thing has installed.
So.. ok, Not now happy with my DHD, but don't know where to start in geriatric terms.
Love this forum tho'

[Q] Newbie Guidance

I just got a brand new htc touch pro2 (rhod100) that was a test unit. I think it's an international phone, but I have no idea if it's unlocked or not -- whether this would work on Sprint or AT&T or what in the U.S.
I'd like to go install a stable version of Android (2.2 is fine) and use it in the U.S. on AT&T and for international travel.
ROM is 1.19.401.0, Radio is 3.44.25.27
Any suggestions where to start?
I've rooted and flashed both Windows and Android phones before, but am not an expert.
Appreciate any help or pointers you all could give.
RS
first step in this, as you probably know, is to hardspl. Android over SD could work anyway even with stock rom, if my memory doesnt fail but it is always recommended to do it.
after that, one of the easiest ways to install android on SD is using Project Android.CAB, it install everything according to where it is supposed to be and then you just open the APP, select model and boot it. any more guidance? there are a lot of topics on the android section on TP2 but if you feel confused just ask.
i would recommend FRX07.1 Complete FroYo Bundle to start with

[Q] Questions about curious debranding results

Last night I managed to de-brand my HTC Wildfire from Vodafone to HTC Generic firmware downloaded from shipped-roms.
The procedure seems to be a success, but I noticed something really weird - my Vodafone ES rom was version 2.24, while the HTC one is version 2.22. I checked for an update from the phone after that but no updates were available.
Is this the latest official version? (I know of some cases where companies change the version number just because they added their own apps/logos in the phone)
The procedure I followed was:
Install HTC Sync
Create a Gold Card
Downloaded the latest WWE rom I found on shipped-roms (RUU_Buzz_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.22.405.1_Radio_13.55.55.24H_3.35.20.10_release_160191_signed.exe)
Ran the installer and waited for it to finish
Thanks in advance for any replies.
P.S. using gold card doesn't root my phone right? (I don't want it to be rooted at this point, so I thought I'd ask)
It's normal. All different carrier branded ROM's have their own version numbers, and the WWE ROM has the lowest build number among these (i.e . 2.22), Most probably, since it was the first one to be released.
And no, you are not rooted, so don't worry about it.

Oh pretty neat I guess.
Any recommendations on which ROM should I keep?
In the past I was always advised to use stock firmware on smartphones, but not sure about the case with modern ones.
Since you don't want to have root at this point of time, you will have to stick with the Stock ROM. If it works fine for your needs, I would say go for it, but, if you feel the need to experiment / mod, then definitely give ROMs like Cyanogenmod 7 and other Gingerbread a try. Or, if so inclined, you can go for Sense based ROMs as well, which look and feel like the Stock ROM, but with various tweaks, improvements, features and optimizations.

[Q] install androidOS after HSPL cooked rom?

I flashed HardSPL on my tilt 2 last year with the Energy Rom using the GTX theme. Ever since I've been noticing that android is so much easier to use and I have been reading on the android Froyo development.
What I need to know is if I have to reflash Stock Rom with SSPL to be able to Flash the Android OS to it.
I've read all the FAQs and I have not seen this question on it and am wondering if anyone can answer it for me.
I don't know if I missed it or if I was looking for the answer at the wrong place.
So can someone please give me a link to a guide on how to do it properly because I don't want to brick my phone on the process. Also tips and precautions if you got any. Thank you!
Android can't be flashed to the phone a la WinMo yet.
Devs are working on it. Works great on my CDMA RHOD, but GSM is still a mystery...
To answer your question, you would need an unlocked bootloader (hSPL) to flash any unsigned image.
Android in its current form for our devices will run on stock SPL or hSPL, it doesn't care... everything runs off the SD card.
more questions
What is an Unasigned Image and what does it do or what is it for? Thank you for your answers.
Also how fast does Froyo run on the SD card. Is it slow? Is there a program to make android to auto start instead of it having to transtion from WM to android?

Unsigned image = anything that's not a stock ROM.
FroYo runs about as well as you can expect on our hardware... which I might mention predates Android entirely... Proc+RAM dates to 2007 on the TP2. Thanks HTC...
For making Android auto-start, search is your friend. Gen.Y is your answer.
Oh nice I didnt see it was you arrgggh. Ive read you posts all day for the past 3 days. I constantly wonder how you guys know all this stuff.
Have you guys thought about video instructions or image instructions for the forum?
I also had a question concerning your device. When you flashed the Cooked Rom on your device ( i know, not the android, its not cooked ) did it change the buttons on your keyboard? Mine did and Ive been looking like crazy for a program that allows me to set the keys to what ever character I want. I did come across it a year ago, but nowadays that post is long gone. Thank you for all your help.

Video/image instructions...? A few have made videos, but stuff changes so frequently it would get outdated very quickly. A PITA to maintain... It's really not that difficult, is it?
I assume you're talking WinMo. I haven't used it in over a year - but there was some weird issue that effected only Sprint devices, and there was some cab that I installed that fixed the issue. Sorry, I'm not much help for WinMo. Ask cajunflavoredbob, I just tell people not to use it .

Info about new HTC 10 Please

Hello guys im a big fan of HTC using them from the last 15 years.
I moved yesterday from my belowed M8 to HTC 10 because i get a"Brand New"" Mint condition never used HTC 10 for exactly 200 USD and i saw its a super Offer for this Carbon Black device no single scratch still sealed
I cheked the phone and is writen to beb USA WWE Version Factorory Uncloked etc.
All work perfectly fine i chek it via HTC Diag and few more alternatives the only one thing bother me when im using a program to identify the device in Main bord is writen "QC Reference Phone" What this mean its that a normal?
The phone is 32GB Black Carbon USA unclocked WWE version i update it via the OTA to android 7 exactly the latest Security Patch is from September 2017 and the build of the android, 2.51.617.21 the official one since the phone was never Rooted or Unlocked Bootloader or S-Offed i have to do this this weekend)
so if you can give me more info about this will be perfect
Thank you in advance.
My other question is regarding the Unclocking things, since 10 is new device for me i will unlock the bootloader with HTC devs 1st then will install costum recovery and root it do i have to S-OFF it just to use a Custum ROM? like Viper and some mods all i want is to be able to flash Viper ROM plus Ainur Aidio Mod Sauron plus Infinity Sound mod by Zero thats it..
I know if i S-OFF it will be able to flash diferent RADIOS firmwares etc but in case im with the latest official Nougat firmware why i will need to do that? or do i really need it if i want to be able to flash only the above things i need.
Of course later with the change and OREO firmware update i will S off it anyway but do i need to do it right now what exactly i will be not able to do if im S-ON only the RADIO firmware?
THANK YOU much appriciete

Basicially S-OFF is needed if You want to change MID and/or CID to flash any RUU You want or, as You said, to be able to flash different firmware (older for example).
In matter of flashing custom roms, You don't need S-OFF to do this. If You have latest official Nougat firmware You can flash Viper ROM plus extras You have mentioned
Remeber one thing, before flashing first custom rom it's always nice and handy to perform backup in TWRP.
Quote from other post about "QC Reference Phone" - thanks to @tabp0le
They gave you a QC reference phone. It's a prototype for development. You need to report that user to ebay and get your money back.

I think the best way would be to contact HTC Support directly and give them all the details about phone
For all the people who wonder there is nothing WRONG with that and is not only ME also the thing about test unit or some kind of protoype is not true as well finally i have a chance to talk directly with HTC Tech support for many things including this QC Reference phone readin of the MotherBoard.
Also they did a nice lookup chek for me and told me the device i got is Perfect USA Factory Unlocked Aka Developers Device in perfect condition. And also that the dive is bought directly from them from the Official HTC site because they had it in the databes there when who and how did he get it.
Lets make it short here is the reason WHY this heppans and not only to me they are already familiar with that wrong reading.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Virginia P.: Great, Tsalta. Based on your IMEI number, I was able to check in my system that you have an original HTC Device manufactured in the US and bought through our website.
The message you are having is not an issue, your phone is in perfect state. The database of some applications does not have all the sub-versions of the processor references. The mainboard does not handle like in the computer that has apart ram processor and video. They handle something called SoC (System on a Chip), therefore the processor handles the whole system. But as there are so many versions depending on number of cores, type of video, amount of ram, etc. the application may not recognize the type of processor.
But, I promise you, there's nothing wrong with your phone.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thats the answer its something related with the revision version Some programs read it on some devices some cant handle it BUT all the device are THE SAME.
