[Q] install androidOS after HSPL cooked rom? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I flashed HardSPL on my tilt 2 last year with the Energy Rom using the GTX theme. Ever since I've been noticing that android is so much easier to use and I have been reading on the android Froyo development.
What I need to know is if I have to reflash Stock Rom with SSPL to be able to Flash the Android OS to it.
I've read all the FAQs and I have not seen this question on it and am wondering if anyone can answer it for me.
I don't know if I missed it or if I was looking for the answer at the wrong place.
So can someone please give me a link to a guide on how to do it properly because I don't want to brick my phone on the process. Also tips and precautions if you got any. Thank you!

Android can't be flashed to the phone a la WinMo yet.
Devs are working on it. Works great on my CDMA RHOD, but GSM is still a mystery...
To answer your question, you would need an unlocked bootloader (hSPL) to flash any unsigned image.
Android in its current form for our devices will run on stock SPL or hSPL, it doesn't care... everything runs off the SD card.

more questions
What is an Unasigned Image and what does it do or what is it for? Thank you for your answers.
Also how fast does Froyo run on the SD card. Is it slow? Is there a program to make android to auto start instead of it having to transtion from WM to android?

Unsigned image = anything that's not a stock ROM.
FroYo runs about as well as you can expect on our hardware... which I might mention predates Android entirely... Proc+RAM dates to 2007 on the TP2. Thanks HTC...
For making Android auto-start, search is your friend. Gen.Y is your answer.

Oh nice I didnt see it was you arrgggh. Ive read you posts all day for the past 3 days. I constantly wonder how you guys know all this stuff.
Have you guys thought about video instructions or image instructions for the forum?
I also had a question concerning your device. When you flashed the Cooked Rom on your device ( i know, not the android, its not cooked ) did it change the buttons on your keyboard? Mine did and Ive been looking like crazy for a program that allows me to set the keys to what ever character I want. I did come across it a year ago, but nowadays that post is long gone. Thank you for all your help.

Video/image instructions...? A few have made videos, but stuff changes so frequently it would get outdated very quickly. A PITA to maintain... It's really not that difficult, is it?
I assume you're talking WinMo. I haven't used it in over a year - but there was some weird issue that effected only Sprint devices, and there was some cab that I installed that fixed the issue. Sorry, I'm not much help for WinMo. Ask cajunflavoredbob, I just tell people not to use it .

Rom for HTC 8525

I just updated my at&t 8525 and well i got the i guess official rom its kinda laggy on my phone which is alright but ive uploaded some programs on it and i got my sms threaded which im loving just wondering what would be a good rom for it and would it be the same affect as me updating the official one so i dont brick my phone and mess it up cause there too much to be getting a new one thanks in advance for any help
If you want one that is simple, safe, and made for at&t, you should go with VP3Gs last rom. Its nice, and stable.
Holy Repeat Noob thread openers batman
Jeez how many of these threads are we gonna see? Someone should count them and keep track for the noobs!
Ya, and its always people with the 8525 lol.
I would use Binkys or MRH if I were you, thats what I use on my 8525. But in reality with SPB Mobile Shell you can use almost any ROM which is what im doing now.

I ran his roms for about a year.
While they are VERY good roms, if you're up for manually inputting Data, SMS settins, and tweaking a few other things, the new 6.1 roms FLY.
I am using this one:

And it is damn fast.
sorry
yes guys i am a noob i just would like to get my 8525 goin good for me im sorry for the stupid noob ? but i just feel that the official rom does not perform that great. can anyone tell me where to download these roms at
We were all noobs at one time. You need to read this first:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299462
It explains everything you need to know to flash ROM's. Then you will need to flash many different ROM's and see which one has what you want. No ROM is the same, and everybody wants something a little different.
Hmmm

I havent tried the new ROM that he just posted but I flashed his rom on the 17th of June and it was SLOOOOW... I mean really slow - boot menu etc and it also sucked the battery down fast w.o WIFI and BT on. Really buggy for me. So, I switched back to a Schaps win 6.0 Rom - stable for now. But if you say this new one works pretty good and is stable, I will give it another shot.
Also, I cannot find out how to fix my QUERTY effin Keyboard. The blue buttons are all effed up - i.e. @ is ? etc... I have seen people talk about this encounter, but I do not know how to fix it. Has this happened to you at all? If so, do you know how to fix it?
so if i get one of these other roms i gotta flash it is there not any already on here made for the 8525 thats already flashed for cingular i mean im not getting this

I'm running his version in my signature and it is fantastic.
With his rom there is a utility that lets you change the keyboard settings. It's called Advanced Config or something like that.

Everyone was a noob sometime .. does it mean we shouldnt help?
I cant talk for AT&T but I use CRC v11 .. very good
Remember most importantly step 1 is to use HARDSPL V7 this will prevent your mobile phone becomming a brick. You can find details about flashing and hardspl in MRVANX's sticky at the top of this forum.
Good luck .. become an expert and give back to the community.

so is there any unofficial roms out there that are faster and stable then then official one that is already flashed i mean what do i have to do just explain it to me i gave up a iphone for this and its alot better but iw anna make it faster
Ok
Step 1 : Read Mrvanx guide on how to HARDSPL your phone (and do it)
Step 2 : Load CRC's V11 rom
Step 3 : Enjoy
You will have to read MRvanx post
You will have to read CRC's post
Its all there so no one will repeat it here for you.

HTC HERO - Idiots Guide to Installing new ROM

Exactly!!!
A lot of us are Linux users too!!!
No offense, but please get more into adb and all the tools needed for reflashing.
Making things idiot proof is useless in my opinion. If you have no idea how to use adb, why upgrade anyway? Chances are you won't understand most custom upgrades/tweaks anyway..
All releases by HTC will be idiot proof, no doubt about it, but installing a custom rom takes skill, knowledge and patience.
In general, an idiot posseses none of the above.
Second, there are no custom roms available for the Hero.
If you want to install custom roms in the future, take some time to understand things. Spoonfeeding this info won't learn you anything.

Hey Sykow, I understand your point but it wasn't helpful. It's comments like these that can deter a newbie from asking questions. A person must ask questions to learn.
No doubt some of the skills needed to load custom firmware or even stock HTC firmware to de-brand your Hero are needed in order for many of us here to upgrade to the rumoured minor update and major update coming soon.
Having a handset from the telco on contract and then having to wait for weeks or even forever to get a bug fixed / performance enhanced firmware update from HTC is not something I want to have to suffer.
As soon as HTC release updated firmware, I will want to know how to load it via my Mac running OS X (preferred) or booted into my Windows partition (not preferred).
All without drama and with little risk of toasting my Hero.
Its not too much to ask surely

From what I can tell, it is pretty straight forward, just like the first time you flash a phone, a bit never racking, and a bit foreign. A co-worker of mine has assured me it is as easy as a WinMo phone.
Nice to be easy as a WiMo phone... but I've had Nokia for years.
Easy to de-brand.
Use Nemesis.
Change Product Code to one like a generic EU code.
Go back to Nokia Software Update.
Download new manufacturer direct firmware... Orange as far as I know, never approved new firmware while I used an N95, N82, N85.
Android de-branding seems to involve a complex trip to a command line editor, a download of firmware that you don't really know where it came from and a large dose of prayer and crossed fingers and toes...
I guess I will wait until someone posts how to load the upcoming updated firmware from HTC so I will end up with a more reliable, stable and faster performing handset... like the one I thought I'd signed up for.

A touch patronising.
I Flash Roms all the time on my Blackstone, and manage to use the custom upgrades/tweeks....
Android is a new OS, and has a new set of terms and abreviations etc, As the OP says, there seems to be little out there to explain things
When there are pages and pages of wikis for the Hero/Android then yes, I can understand being frustrated about noobie questions, but until there IS threads/stickies/Wikis out there then I'm afraid there will be questions put forward like this.
Correct. But those things need time. How long has the Hero been out now? Couple of weeks? C'mon..
And a person doesn't learn by asking questions. At least, not here. There are TONS of threads around. All the things you need are in there. It's just a matter of looking, taking the time to actually learn and read. If you still don't get it after the proper research, ask questions. Give the exact problem so we can tailor the reponse to it.
I flashed my old Wizard so many times.. Then I got on to the iPhone 2G, making it work in The Netherlands. I took the time to read all the reports, stickies and the necessary info to make it work. With some motivation and some common sense every person can do this.
I'm completely new to Android and I managed to root, update and tweak my Hero within 1 hour.
I just have a problem with these guys coming here, "demanding" a guide for idiots, making no effort at all to understand the complexity of it all.
This device hasn't even been out for a month! Chill out! When the stuff is ready, it will come.
Hmmmmm

Sykow - thanks for your comments, please dont call us "demanding idiots !" Like you I and many others are new to Android and yes its a huge learning curve, I have rooted my HERO and Tweaked it but merely wanted advice on some of the explanation given as i did not think it was that clear !!!
I have programmed, tweaked and installed numerous roms on blackberry and nokia previously and wanted advice on Android - you were not born with the knowledge you had to learn it....
Anyway after a polite request at least someone was polite enough to assist and it is sorted - bring on the cooked roms.
I have to agree with Sykow here to a degree. Rooting, flashing and backing up isn't for the weak of heart, and one wrong move could mean that the same newbie comes back to this forum crying about a bricked phone and bad instructions, and that would just distract people from the real point of this sub-forum, i.e. actual ROM hacking, stuff like what Haykuro is doing in the background.
Here's a starting point that worked for me:
Rooting the Hero: http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/08/how-to-gain-root-access-on-your-htc-hero/
After that, if you're looking at replacing built-in apps and cooking your own ROMs, you're better off looking in the Dream Android Development sub-forum where it all started. If you're having problems looking for technical pointers in those sub-forums and instead finding that most questions are about how-do-i root/flash/etc, you'll start to understand where Sykow is coming from
Me, I don't think you're an idiot. I just think it'd help to spend your time with the Android SDK as well as searching the other Android Dev sub-forums in XDA for what you're looking for. If you're confident enough after that to come up with a How-To of your own for the benefit of newbies, feel free to go ahead, but from what I have seen from time to time, it can be a thankless job when newbies fail to follow the instructions to a T, brick their devices then come back crying or *****ing, and expect someone to fix it for them.
I found the HTC Dream wiki section on rooting/hacking etc quite informative:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Dream_overview_and_useful_information
I managed to work out how to make a backup last night, using files from Paulatmodoco's rooting guide:
http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/291397/12-08-1-4-modaco-hero-patch-a2sd-root-busybox-much-more/
Simply follow his instructions up to stage 5. Then you will be in the recovery image menu and you can select to make a nandroid backup.
If I have some time later, I'll write up a dummys guide to making a nandroid backup, which is one of the most important steps I reckon And rooting using paul's system is then very, very easy. as is flashing a new ROM.
I must also agree with Sykow. I only recently got my Hero and had no knowledge of rooting. I'm sure a step by step guide would be lovely but actually it is possible and it pays to read up about it yourself.
I knew the Android SDK was needed, so I downloaded and installed that as per Android website, read about what adb and fastboot did. The files and commands were easy to source from here. About and hours reading and a complete Android noob was rooted and away. I do feel that some folk maybe can't be bothered with the reading part, but think - if something goes wrong in the process, you aren't going to know why or how to fix it.
My sentiments exactly.

NRG also puts out another TP2 ROM which is less than bleeding edge but more stable codenamed Pheonix. So what exactly happens when you run Rhodium-HardSPL_V2_00R3.EXE? Is it a connection error, a program error, a device error? If you have a Tilt2, you probably need to install this to your device before you run the executable. BTW, you're not backing up your device with HardSPL, you're replacing the stock, HTC bootloader with a patched bootloader, a process which you only need to do once. It's also not necessary to back up your device before flashing a new ROM, it's just recommended if you have important stuff saved to main memory, since you lose all the data on your device each time you flash. You will not lose data when installing HardSPL with this executable.

A .cab is an installer, just like an EXE or MSI on a desktop computer. Don't uncompress it, just put the .cab file as is onto your device, disconnect your device from the computer, browse to wherever you put it with File Explorer Mobile, and open it. Install it to internal memory and you're done. Also, try disabling your Antivirus/Firewall and ensure you have Windows Mobile Device Center (Vista/7) or ActiveSync (XP and lower). And no offence, but you might want to hold off on flashing for a little while, at least until you get a bit more acquainted with Windows Mobile. I recommend that everyone who flashes their device at least understand the technical aspects, since that highly reduces chances of bricking as an end result.
DaveTheTyntIIGuy thank so much I did what u sed and i instolled it with no problems to my phone. You just helped me in a big way. Now I know how to download programes to my phone. So I think I have an idea how to do what i first came here to do. But your are rite 100%, I gotta get a understanding of this before I do anything so I dont screw up my phone. Thank you alot. So now that I downloaded the enablerapinew my phone is ready for when I decide to get a new interface on the phone like the Manila 2.5 / 2.8 / ext. ?
Get accustomed to you phone by doing the minor cabs and tweaks found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524655
Most of this stuff is harmless and will get you use to using cabs and changing things on your phone.

No, that .cab enables RAPI (Remote API) on the Tilt2, which allows programs like the HardSPL unlocker, on the PC, to control the device to an extent, which it needs to do in order to flash HardSPL.

minor correction: HKLM\Software\HTC\Manila\Version
On the stock Tilt2, the version is 2.1.19183217.0
Note that this can also be seen by looking at the About section of the Settings tab in TF3D.
This is awsome DaveTheTytnIIGuy, the programe you sent me worked. I was suscussfully able to flash my HardSPL, with Rhodium-HardSPL_V2_00R3. Thank you. So now I'm up to the next step witch is finding a ROM.
Is it possible to get Manila without flashing a cooked rom or is manila a cooked rom? I guess what I am asking is Can you get Manila as a CAB file or do you have to flash it as a ROM?

The only way to get a different version of Manila is to change ROMs. If you're using the stock ROM, you'll need to switch to a cooked ROM to get one of the newer versions of Manila.

[Ask Your Questions Here] Questions And Answers for Vogue Users

All,
Due to good success in the Blue Angel section, I have decided to open a Questions and Answers thread on this section of the forum as well. This will be good to keep the number of new threads with questions down to a minimum, which will make new threads essentially for people that are contributing to the Vogue in any way. This includes but is not limited to people that are providing
*New Roms and Kitchens
*Programs and Apps
*Fixes
*Skins
*Tips and Tricks
However, I have a life (and so do most of you), which is why I would like to request the help from other Seniors (or anyone who knows the answer really ) to monitor the thread as well. This will have the added side effect of creating an ever self updating knowledge base that will far extend the content of the Wiki. This will in turn save us from having to answer the same question 37000 times...
Without further ado, lets go for it!

GOOD IDEA!
Hi there Gents any input
Barogi awesome so far for v2; media player not staying in full screen mode though, and manila home weather under clock wont update when you push update now also getting error message for manila home on reboot
Great idea for a faq page!
I have been using a NFSfan rom on my bell vogue for a while, and it crapped out today for some reason. Rather than put another WM build on it, I wanted to change to Android.
I have looked through many pages in here, but I can't find a simple tutorial on switch from a custom WM build to a Android build. I prefer to use the NAND method so that I don't ever have to see WM again...
Can someone create or point me towards a step-by-step guide for installing Android? Keep in mind that I have absolutely no Android experience, and that my custom ROM is completely messed up, so would it make for sense to flash the a manf build and upgrade from there?
Thanks

As far as WMP, Barogi will have to look into it since it is his rom.
One last thing, please do not double post. Thanks for understanding...
I have a question:
I recently flashed the Bell rom with the latest radio (I couldn't get the radio only nbh to apply properly), and then subsequently flashed with the latest NagROM rom (which is awesome btw).
Now of course, at startup i have the nice HTC screen with the rom version etc, followed by an AWFUL blue BELL screen (and then the nice orange wm6.5 screen).
Is it possible to change the blue BELL screen? And if so how?

There was a cab to change that somewhere around here in this section of the forum. Alternatively, you can flash NFSFan's rom (which will get rid of it), or you can try mine as well and then reflash Nag's rom.

Help guys, I have a Sprint vogue that was flashed before. It was CID unlocked and has custom ROM on it. My cousin was the one using it then he returned it to me at this state. Problem is the phone does not have any radio. So i tried to bootload it and flash it with a radio but it does not accept it . It's now CID locked.
VOGU100 MFG
SPL-2.01.1000
CPLD-3
I tried to flash it with an OEM ROM, Sprint, USC, Alltel, telus, Bell, VZW nothing seems to work. is there any way to ICD unlock this? so i could flash it with an OEM rom. Thanks.

Look in my signature. There is a guide for unlocking as well as superCID unlock the device. Let me know if you need help.

Hey everyone,
So I was running NSFANS 6.5 ROM on my device (Amazing ROM btw) But I needed to revert back to the stock rom. I used the VZW updater to go back to the stock rom and I changed the esn on line. When I dialed the *228 and choose option 1 I got a failed message. So I called customer support and he walked me through a manual programing. Well that got voice working but when I went to use the data it wouldn't work. I made sure all the network settings were right, and I still couldn't connect. Well then I hard reset the device and now I am back to square 1. No voice no data. Is this something from NSFANS rom that is messing the phone up? I don't want to call again because their tech support takes forever and I am afraid they are just going to tell me to take the phone into the store. Thanks in advance!

Why did you change the E$N? Where you using the device in a different carrier?
Back to your problem. Your EPST settings should survive a hard reset as those are parameters that are not stored in Windows (afaik). It really makes not difference which rom you are using (at least for Voice and SMS).
Lets focus on your main phone's capabilities first. If your EPST settings truly got lost, you will need to get them from Verizon again. The main ones are the MSD and MIN. Make sure that you write them down this time as you will need them again if they go bye bye.
As for your internet, you will probably need to set the correct username in the phone's programming as well (also info that you will need from Verizon, but it should be something like [email protected] or something like that)
Do that and let me know if this works. They will have to program this for you this time, but once you have the values that I mentioned before, you will be able to do it yourself.

I have android 2.1 currently on my vx6900, Id like to go back to close to stock Rom, but without all the verizon carrier "flavorings" and rescrictions.
Any ideas? Personaly I liked the simple clean useage of win 6.0 without all the extra graphics ( besides the HTC home plug in and the touch flo )
thanks in advance.

Try to get Barogi's latest "lite" rom. Also, you can't go wrong with vin's 28014 or NFSFan's rom. I would recommend mine, but I think they might be a little heavy for what you want. Good luck.
i checked out NSFSfan. It was nice, but waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much for what I want. Ill check out the other you suggested before i just flash back to stock rom

Try to avoid stock if you can... it has a bad tendency of being too heavy on the extra apps.
I checked out just SS's of both. Both look awesome, but theres something about the simple look ( or im just used to it since my 8125 ) of the stock look. I would like to have the look but the added memory of a cooked rom.
With NSFSfans, could you remove the today screen plug ins to get back to a more stock look?
Im runnin 2.1 android eclair at the moment, and im barley pulling a full day battery with no data/bluetooth. With the old winmo, I was getting 2.5 days-3days. Thats another main concern for me.

HELP!! How can i install operating system on my phone? Demo Version finished

Hi, I bought a HTC touch pro 2 phone a couple months back with windows mobile 6.5 on the phone and today i woke up to find that the operating system was some beta version and that it has run out so now the phone is not working. There is no information anywhere what to do.
I have tryed going on the htc site and downloading software but when i put the serial number in it says that it is not suitable
How can i install an operating system that will work or even get this version to work
Any help would be apprecitated
What an incredibly weird problem.
Your best bet* is to go to your carrier's website (rather than HTC's) and download their most current ROM.
Alternatively, you could download one of hundreds of custom ROMs here or on other sites. Just make sure you use a GSM ROM if you have a GSM phone or a CDMA ROM if you have a CDMA phone.
*Many are going to insist that a custom ROM is your best bet. Since you don't seem to be very familiar with these concepts I really think a stock ROM from your carrier is the best place to start in order to get your phone working again.

What model of the TP2 is it, where did you buy it, and what carrier are you using it on?
EDIT: I'm guessing I already know the answer to the 2nd question

It sounds like you bought a used phone that someone had put a custom rom on. Ive heard people discuss in the NRG Rom thread that some of the roms previous to April 1st would expire on the first of may. This sounds all too similar.
My advice... flash a new rom. Especially if you DID but the phone used. That's like what is going on. Do some reading in the Rom sub forum and you'll see what I'm talking. find the NRG Rom thread and search "expiration" or something.
Hope this helps some!
Hi, It expired on the 1st may so i guess that might be what the problem is. How can i instal i new rom? and where can i get this information. Do you have any links?
Thanks

Thats a big question that you're best just doing some reading on and if you have questions as in those threads.
The thread's you want to read are here ---->Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile ROM Development
Read through those threads that are at the very top with "Sticky" next to them. All the threads below are rom related threads about certain roms availabe to install etc.
