Hi,
I just bought a HTC Desire from Orange FR.
I bought an unlock code on ebay, it worked very well.
My question is : If I root my phone, and flash a generic Europe rom, will my phone still be unlocked or not ?
Do I still need to do the gold card ?
Thank you for your help
Yes your phone will still be unlocked, it doesn't matter what you do to the phone now, it will always be unlocked (unless you change mainboard)
No, you shouldn't need GoldCard now either, but if it's not working, then obviously use a GoldCard
Really good to hear,
Thank you for your answer !
You will still need a goldcard to root.
The sim lock has nothing to do with the goldcard.
You will also find that if you flash a rom with a new radio it will sim lock your phone again. You just need to re enter your unlock code to fix that though.

I flashed the new leaked radio and it didn't sim lock my phone, I got branded Orange UK, had to unroot to unlock it then re-root and now I've flashed a few radios and it's still unlocked
And sorry about the information about the GoldCard, I read it and thought that you only needed it if the carrier was locked, not that it was branded, so yes you will need GoldCard
You may have been lucky with the radio flashes! There have been loads of posts from Orange users who have flashed any radio other than the 405 one and it locked their phones. Either way, once you have the unlock code you are sorted anyway

Yer, it sim locks Orange if you haven't already unlocked it, it used to sim lock mine and even if I entered the unlock code it wouldn't unlock, I had to unroot and everything just to unlock, and now I can flash any radio and it stays unlocked
Do I have to root to do this ? :
How to flash ROM
You need to have HTC Sync and Android SDK installed
Download this
Turn off Desire and then turn it on while holding back button to enter bootloader(white screen)
Once in "white screen" press power button again to enter bootloader
Connect Desire with PC
Press Volume Down and than Power to enter Recovery
Now the red triangle should show up, go to folder you downloaded file and press recovery-windows.bat, recovery-mac.sh or recovery-linux.sh depending on which OS you have
Now you are in recovery mode (green screen), press Wipe and than Wipe data/clear storage, than press optical tracker to confirm it
After that press Volume Down to go back to main menu in recovery
Navigate to Flash zip from sdcard using optical tracker, select .zip confirm it and wait until process finish, after that press Reboot system and unplug you Desire
Enjoy your new ROM
I just want to flash a generic Europe rom.
Thank you
Yes you need root to do that
Hi, Thank you for your help..
A few questions please.
I had to make a goldcard even if phone was SIMUnlocked.
It worked well, my phone is now rooted.
Android says there is an update available, 1.21... it tries to install, phone reboot, green logo appears, and then logo change to red ? and reboot, phone not updated.
What does it mean ?
I had a Orange France branded phone, the rooted generic rom is it "Europe" there is French language in it.
Is it needed to update to 1.21 ?
Do I have to find an Europe ROM ?
When I try to flash any ROM (like Europe official ROM) by renaming it to update.zip with recovery menu, if fails, signature error. Do I need the "ClockworkMod" ?
Thank you for all
If your rooted, you can flash any ROM you want, you don't need to update to 1.21.
But for some ROMs it requires you to install a new radio first, so watch out for that.
Well, not sure how to do it.
On recovery menu ? flash a zip from SDCard and select it ?
The OTA 1.21 update fails do flash with a red "?" is it normal ?
If I update with OTA Update, it will remove root access, right ?
Thank you

Correct!
If you flash an OTA or official update from HTC you will lose root.
In recovery, choose flash a zip from sd card, then select the one you want. It's not always needed, but it's a good idea to do a full wipe before each new rom. If you experience odd behaviour and you haven't wiped, then reflash it after wiping.
Thank you for your help and your patience.
Is there any advantage to find a 1.21 rooted update ?
or rooted 1.15 is enough ?
thank you again.
As far as I know 1.21 has a few minor fixes, and a couple of new icons.
Just out of curiosity, what did you root for? Most people do it for apps2sd or to put a custom rom on. I'm just wondering, that's all
Well, I had a branded orange ROM, I wanted to remove it.
I thought I needed to root to flash the phone, maybe I'm wrong. I had to make a goldcard.
I will probably use apps2sd in the next few days, I just need to know if I can still have (need ?) goldcard and apps2sd..
I did not search but I saw you format SD to install apps2sd, I don't know if I can install goldcard again after. I will search for it.
Now my phone is rooted (and unlocked with code before flash), I don't know if I need to keep goldcard.

You didn't need to root if you just wanted to debrand away from Orange, a goldcard and official wwe rom would have done. As you want to use apps2sd then rooting was the right option though!
I'm not 100% sure on the goldcard, if you need it again, but I do know you will wipe your SD card for apps2sd. You need to partition it which basically reformats it.
Yeah I saw this, I have to check if I can restore Goldcard after.
Is WWE recommanded for me ? I guess rooted image is WWE (there French language is in it, why ?) ... My as I'm in France, I don't know if I need to find a European ROM or not
Thank you

Hello
Few days ago I was prompted to install update 2.10.405.2. After the installation I can't enable wifi anymore; it simply says error. I just got my phone 2 weeks ago on an Orange contract (from mobiles.co.uk), but when I contacted HTC they said that my phone should be a branded and locked O2 Desire. HTC said that because my phone was unbranded the update messed my phone. Is that possible?
I noticed that quite a few people are affected by this, but the guy from HTC wouldn't say if they are aware of this problem or if they are working on a fix. They "escalated" the call but haven't contacted me back yet.
Is there a way to simply uninstall the update?
I read this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=779787 but I wouldn't want to downgrade to 2.1 (I just got this phone 2 weeks ago, plus this is my first Android so...) wouldn't that invalidate my warranty ?
Please advise,
Thanks
If your Desire was a previously branded handset then you need your gold card in the unit for ALL updates. This is why the handset is having issues...
I didn't know that.
Why was I given a previously branded phone in the first place, if this could cause problems like this?
Anyway, I made my main microSD card a gold card now... for future updates. Does this gold card just needs to be in the device when you update, or you need to do something else as well ?
Is there a way to simply uninstall this bloody update?
You just need the gold card in the unit...Don't suppose you happen to know the software version that was on the unit when you got it do you?
Unfortunately no. But this was the first and only update that I got, if that helps.
Same issue here, is a hard reset/reflash the only solution? I'd rather not lose my files and stuff, ofcourse.
It would be either 1.21.405.2 or 2.09.405.8 I'd imagine...
CPW own mobiles.co.uk so it should've been an unbranded device - mine was from a CPW store and was unbranded - so it may have not been a branded unit. Follow this guide and if it completes with no issues you're on an unbranded unit (it will roll you back to Android 2.1 and you can then flash the Android 2.2 RUU file directly (or try the OTA update again)*
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
* You will lose all data, mind, so backup what you need before doing this
Will this invalidate my warranty?
I also contacted mobiles.co.uk (as HTC suggested) to ask them why on HTC database my phone apears as a branded O2 phone, but still got no answer from them. You are saying that it should have been an unbranded Desire ?
No it won't, if it completes then you've got a generic Desire and that guide puts you back to stock 2.1...you can then update again to 2.2 and HTC won't know a thing...
I'm saying it should have been an unbranded Desire going from my experience of CPW - that's not to say EVERY Desire will be unbranded as it depends where they got the stock from
Quote from post : [HOWTO] Downgrade Froyo (2.2) to Stock 2.1 (ANY HBOOT | WIN/LINUX/MAC | ROOT)
"Further Information
If you want to flash an alternative RUU (e.g. a branded 2.1 release), just skip the downgrade section at the end by pressing vol-down on the phone when the utility has completed. Then reboot the phone and run the RUU you want. If you have an SLCD screen you should be very careful here - most RUUs don't support the screen."
Question: Do I need to skip the downgrade?
My model number is HTC Desire A8181 - is this with SLCD screen?
I have downloaded RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.10.405.2_R_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_142828_signed.exe
Is this ok to flash after this process?
Sorry, I am a novice (got the phone 2 weeks ago) and did not expect to bump into problems like this so early.
Please help, I wouldn't want to brick my phone.
The guide downgrades you to the stock 1.21.405.2 ROM which is fine for SLCD screens. You can then either use that RUU or just do the OTA update again - whichever you prefer (personally, I use the RUU)
There should be no issues if you follow the guide to the letter
Other thing to try first, though, is a hard reset - it might fix it for you
Just did a hard-reset. It didn't help. Will try downgrading and let you know how it went.
I did the downgrade and now the wireless is working again )
I'm flashing that RUU now
Thanks so much EddyOS
No worries matey, just keep the gold card in the phone and you shouldn't have issue in future
I had the same problem.
No WiFi and hotspot after ota.
This because i forgot to put in my goldcard...
Easiest way to fix it is to make a goldcard, then get the .zip file from the 2.10.405.2 update and place it on the goldcard.
Rename it update.zip.
Put the goldcard in your phone.
Then enter recovery mode (reboot your phone, when turning on hold the lock button and volume down button)
Select recovery in the menu you get, then wait, after a while it shows you a few options. Choose the option to run the update.zip.
Done, everything works perfectly.
Its really easy, only making the goldcard out of an SD requires a little searching/reading.
Good luck!
Edit: forgot to say it doesnt erase any data, like apps and contacts.
Just be sure if you use your current SD card as goldcard to copy everything to your pc before making it. Then you can put it back later on.
Finaly back to the latest 2.2 Android. Updated using OTA.
Tried updating with RUU but for some reason after the RUU rebooted the phone to start the update, the phone got stuck on the HTC screen and the RUU timed out; tried it several times.
But I'm back on track now.
Will keep the goldcard in at all times. Lesson learned the hard way.
DaannRoz - unfortunately I already did the hard-reset...
Thanks everybody.
Thanks DaannRoz
I put a new 16gb into my phone a while back and put it through the gold card process so I thought it should work. It didnt and I got the Wifi error code. I put the original gold card in and went through the steps you provided and got my Wifi back. It saved me from reflashing the phone and wiping out all my apps and data.
I anyone gets a picture of a phone with a red triangle and a apostrophe in it you need to push and hold the volume key up and then press the power button to get to the rom select screen.
Thanks Daan..
Just stuffed my Desire. Will try the update via recovery @ home.
BTW is this the update you want me to do ??

I got the same issue. After reapplying the update with an update.zip and the recovery mode --with gold card inside at this moment-- everything goes fine and my WiFi works again...
Hey guys i really need some help here, my phone won't boot up and it won't recognise my sd card. I've only got fastboot and recovery.
I'll explain as best as i can how it got this way;
Firstly i tried to s-off my desire so that i could upgrade to amon recovery 2.0, but it got stuck on 3rd step waiting for flash to complete after sorting that out by flashing a new rom, i proceeded to flash the recovery and that went fine. then i created a nand backup and decided to test the s-off by flashing a custom splash which also went fine but then i rebooted and downloaded leedroid2.2f and transfered it on to my sd card but when i rebooted the phone when into a small bootloop before booting into the phone but it was failing to recognise the sd card so i tested the sd card in my hero and it was working fine. the phone wasn't being recognised by the laptop as it ws asking for certian drivers so i rebooted into recovery and did a full wipe (like an idiot) and now it gets stuck in the boot animation with no logcat output and as it can pick up the sd card i can't flash a rom.
I hope some one can help me get my desire back to stock at least so i can send it off to htc if there is any hardware problem
Can i also add that my desire was orange branded had a slcd screen its original hboot was 0.83 and i don't have a goldcard for it either
Edit: I solved it and my phone is back thanks to guide by shockem on another thread, i'd also like to apologise to any mods for opening a new thread (kinda panicked) i'll look around properly before i open a new thread
hey guys now that my phone is back to stock has it got warranty back? seeing as it's an orange branded phone but it has a stock unbranded rom also its sim unlocked
If Orange takes care of your warranty, I suppose you must flash an Orange branded RUU before submitting it.
Yeah but theres no orange ruu and i can't use my usb port. I only have a goldcard which i made last night so if anyone can create a pb99img.zip for a stock orange rom i'll be grateful or if anyone can tell me another way of flashing a stock orange ruu.
That ZIP can only be extracted from an RUU, it's not something you can 'make up'
I'd go back to HTC direct and see what they say

Yeah i realised that, seeing as i got my phone running now i've done some searching and i believe my usb is bricked, theres a guide on modaco to fix it but it requires for me to be rooted, the problem is my phone is slcd and originally had boot loader version 0.83 and the bootloader atm is 0.93. Is there a way for me to root the desire to attempt this fix?
its definitely a usb brick as i've enabled sd card functionality. I jus need a way to root the device now any one help me out?
You can't, unless VISIONary is working on the Desire
If you wanna try a newer ROM and see if that fixes things get the newest PB99IMG off of shipped-ROMs.com - it's the version of 2.29.405.2 and you'll need your gold card to flash it

Just tried with VISIONary it goes through the motions and su app is there but doesn't seem to have given root as any app requiring root doesn't work. I'll have to pop into local orange shop and see what they say if that doesn't work can you tell me how i would get it back to HTC
You'd send it back to HTC as per the warranty card details I imagine, never had to send anything back to them before
SOLVED
Manage to get it done using this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9056719&postcount=15
make sure usb debugging is ticked and also copy the files to /data/data/jackpal.androidterm/ only, there is no such directory as shared_prefs
Only way to get stock orange ruu on it is go to an orange store and ask them to reflash the phone.

Thats true but i don't think flashing the RUU would have fixed the usb brick but its all good now i have learned alot over the past 24hours and hopefully i won't come across this situation again but just incase it does happen again, atleast i'll know what to do. But thanks for your input i really appreciate it
My Desire recently had to be sent back to HTC for repair. Came back with hboot 0.93.001. When I got it back, I rooted it (using Unrevoked) and flashed LeeDroid 2.3b.
However, the phone has developed the common locking/rebooting fault and I need to send it back to HTC again, but before I can send it back I need to reflash the stock ROM (T-Mobile UK).
However, whichever method I try I can't get the stock ROM back on to the phone. If I try reflashing using HTC sync, then I get ERROR #140 or #170 (assuming the phone doesn't freeze during the process).
If I try extracting the ROM.zip and renaming it to PB99IMG and installing from the root of the micro SD then I get a message saying "CID incorrect! Update Fail!"
Does anyone have any ideas how I can get my piece of crap HTC Desire back to stock ROM?
P.S. if you haven't already guessed from the last statement or read any of my other posts about my Desire going wrong, I will NEVER EVER buy another HTC....their customer service stinks worse than a landfill site!!

OK, I've created the goldcard. Now, how do I get the rom image onto the card? When the phone boots with the gold card in, I can't select mass storage. I've also tried the card in a card reader...it wasn't recognised.

Are you able to mount your SD card in recovery?
Try the following, I am assuming that you are running Windows 7: Try to re-format the card as FAT32 (if present, right-click on the removable disk and select Format).
1) Check if the device is getting detected in device manager. Follow the steps to go to device manager:
- Click Start, type devmgmt.msc and press enter.
- Search for the name of the device
If the device is not getting detected in device manager, then check if it is hidden device.
- Click show hidden devices under View
- Expand all the nods under device manager
There would be many grayed out entries in device manager uninstall all the grayed out entries under all the nods and then restart the computer and plug the external device to the computer and check if it works
2) Install the latest drivers from the manufacturer website and even make sure the driver is compatible with the version of operating system installed on your computer. check if it works

Install the driver in Compatibility mode: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows
3) Check with any other another SD card if it is getting recognized or detected or you may even check if the same SD card is getting recognized or detected on other computer

still having problems...

OK, I managed to create another goldcard with the goldcard tool in your signature. I then extracted the rom from the T-Mobile (UK) stock ROM and renamed it to PB99IMG.ZIP and dropped it onto the goldcard.
Rebooted with the goldcard in the phone and vol - pressed, got the boot menu. The rom image was detected and started to load (side bar in top right of screen showing progress). ROM loaded 100%, then got the 'checking ROM' message. Then..."CID incorrect! Update Fail!" message again.
I've checked and double checked the goldcard creation process and am convinced I'm doing nothing wrong.
Any other ideas? I'm beginning to think hboot 0.93.0001 can't be downgraded.
P.S. I'm running Vista 32-bit
No, flashing an old RUU over a new HBOOT won't work. The issue you've got is there isn't a 2.2 T-Mobile UK RUU available so unless you've got an AMOLED screen the only thing you can do is flash the stock HTC RUU
it is an AMOLED screen

I know t mobile would know that the rom has changed from there own one to the htc one, but are the any differences apart from that if the htc rom was installed?
I mean would it run normally and recieve the normal updates ota, and would that affect if the htc was simlocked or anything?

It'd run normally but would get HTC OTA updates not T-Mobile ones. Seems the latest OTA doesn't work on debranded phones, though

@Eddy,
Since he has AMOLED, there's a multistep procedure he can try.
1. Prepare the goldcard correctly with a Format in Fat32 (and deleting any extra partitions. Only 1 partition should exist-It should be a Fat32 Primary). If Goldcard is correct, phone should not give CID incorrect error.
2. Download the WWE 2.29 PB99IMG.zip, and put it in the goldcard and run it.
3. Run Teppic74's downgrader with goldcard. At the last step, choose to use this PB99img (Run this RUU while monitoring your Temp folder for changes. When the RUU loads and displays a window, search temp for Rom.zip. Rename it to PB99IMG.zip and put it in the root of the sdcard) instead of the Teppic one.
4. At this point the phone will have a completely working 2.1 Android OS branded to TMO.
5. Check for and update with OTA (You will get TMO OTAs at this point). Now your phone will have the latest TMO ssoftware and be as good as any other!
But they'd have to extract the PB99IMG file out of the RUU, the RUU on it's own won't do

Yes indeed, but quite doable. The result would be a perfectly unrooted T-Mobile branded phone.
Edit: Added instructions for extracting the PB99IMG.zip from the TMO RUU

...but I've given up on my Desire.
I can't use it for more than 2 minutes at most without it freezing up!! This is nowhere near long enough to do any of the above! I've even tried resting it on a bag of ice to keep it cool, but even that was no good!
I'm just gonna sell it to one of the recycle companies and put the money towards buying myself out of my contract.
Shame really because when it was working, it was a brilliant phone!!
HTC seriously need to get their house in order QC-wise. I know they have been making phones for a good few years now, but people still say "HTC, who??" and while they're QC remains as bad as it seemingly appears to be then that situation will persist!!
Think I'm gonna take a risk on the LG Optimus 2X when it comes out!! Why? because I love Android...I love bleeding edge...only now I hate HTC with a passion!!!

Same here. If anyone can get my T-Mobile (UK) Desire (rooted, hboot 0.93.0001) back to stock ROM then I'd be willing to pay (within reason). Bearing in mind you'd first have to solve the problem of it not being usable for any more then 2 minutes even from 'cold'.
No software problem should fail to be repaired by running a ruu. If if freezes or loops while running ruu, that confirms a hardware fault which necessitates a return if the device.
No I'm not in UK. I know that what I described may seem overwhelming, but believe me, if you run the procedure I mentioned, step-by-step and with the files I linked, there is no reason why you can't have your phone up and running in under 45 mins. See the unrooting guide I've written, linked in my signature, for the step-by-step method of running the pb99img from an ruu. It's easy enough. Only things you need for a smooth sailing is a working goldcard and the file extracted from the ruu correctly.
Note that I can't confirm that this method will work for Slcd , and it is quite dangerous running a 1.20 ruu on slcd. Proceed only if you're sure that yours is an amoled desire

Hi guys... A colleague of mine just got a branded orange desire hd and asked me to debrand it for him.
I've never flashed a HTC phone.
I looked through the forums and did the following on an old laptop at work:
1. Made a gold card.
2. Downloaded stock 1.32 rom
3. Downloaded test 1.15 rom
4. Unzipped 1.32 then opened up 1.15 and copied 1.32 over the temp.
5. Went through the flash process and confirmed I wanted to upgrade from 1.40 orange to 1.32 stock.
6. The software rebooted the phone to the HTC screen.
7. The software says 'sending'.
8. This process was started at 6 pm... But was continuing at 8 pm!
The laptop is old (centrino processor)... So I have left it to run over night...
What are your thoughts? If it's done in the morning I'm okay... But what do I do if not?
Thanks

has the DHD rebooted yet? or are you still booted into the os? if it hasent rebooted yet you could try flashing the ruu from fastboot. also check the software version on the phone, mine was orange branded and came with the 1.40.xxx version and was easly rooted using visionary with no downgrade needed
It's booted into the HTC screen?

i woulnt touch it then, if its flashing bootloader or radio you could perm brick it...... best bet is to just wait, but it only took me about 10 minutes to flash an ruu
This is the problem... I think it's just taking AGES because the laptop is just sooooo sloooooooooow! When I originally opened the RUU it took about 5 minutes to open.
At least you have confirmed it is flashing and what I have done would usually have been correct.
Hopefully it's finished by tomorrow. If it isn't, any other ideas?

only other option is just to bite the bullet and disconnect it. as long as you can boot into the bootloader you can always flash the ruu from fastboot, obviously by disconnecting it you also run the risk of bricking it
Thanks. So, IF I need to disconnect it...
How do I get to the bootloader? And do I need some software for fastboot commands in windows?

if you have htc sync installed you will already have the hboot/fastboot drivers. to flash an ruu from fatboot, turn the device off then hold volume down and press the power key (keep vol down held down) this will bring up the hboot screen, use the volume buttons to navigate the menu till fastboot is selected, press the power button to confirm, when in fastboot just connect to the pc and run the ruu
Fantastic! Thanks a lot!

Update! Got in today and found this error:
"Error [131]: Customer ID error
The ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android phone
Please get the correct Rom Update Utility and try again
Exit to quit"
The phone has booted back to the orange rom. What did I do wrong?
Thanks,
crabby
Try it the pd98img.zip method. It has much better success.

it means you made the goldcard unsucessfully. liike i said check the current version number on the rom. if it says 1.4x.xxxxx. you dont need to downgrade, you can root using visionary then s-off

Thanks, I have found out that this is just the ROM renamed and installed via bootloader... Do I need a gold card for this?

I can't sell rooting to my colleague for some reason The pd98img.zip seems like a good way to go (it's the same method I used to use on my xperia x1), but will I need to fix the gold card to do this? And, if not... Does this completely wipe the phone?
Is rooting the least likely to brick? I might just ask to take it home and do it myself! (Though I haven't quite figured out the s-off method yet).
Thanks,
crabby

you cant s-off without rooting i thought you were trying to downgrade the rom so you can root and s-off. what im tryna say is, if you have the right software version you dont need to downgrade to root

No... don't want root... He just wants to debrand his phone. Orange sticks a load of bloatware on their version like a fake market and their own map application etc as well as a load of game demos.
So, all I am trying to do is go from orange to stock firmware. So, just need to install the stock rom. Does the pd98img need a gold card? I'll try and do that again on Monday if necessary... Is there anyway to confirm the gold card is correct before trying to flash?
Thanks again... sorry to be such a bore with this... it just seems so much more complicated than I'm used to (Flashing Xperia X1 and Galaxy S).
