Changing kernels - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondering how you would change the kernel. I just downloaded it and updated the zip through clockwork. Wondering if that was the right way.

Yes, a zip file, install through clockwork, then check the status, if it's installed properly.

new to this...if I change the kernel does it affect any apps? will I need to backup and reinstall?

No. changing the kernel doesn't affect any apps. But make sure you do a nandroid backup thru clockworkmod in case the flash goes wrong.

Can't flash other ROM's after CWM issue

I was affected by CWM when I upgraded to 3.0. I can't flash any ROM's except for Fresh's. I've tried going through Rom Manager, manually downloading ROM, AR recovery. The ROM install will complete but when I reboot I'm still in Fresh's. I don't know what it did to my phone. I've even deleted the rom.zip and downloaded it again thinking it was a bad download. From here on out I'm permanently switching to AR so if you guys can let me know what I should do.
By the way I list my backups. I did have a backup of UD but it won't restore in CWM. Will it work if I copy the backup from CWM and move it to the Amon Ra folder? I don't want to try it and possible make things worse.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yes I need help on this, too. I wanted to go to Myn's rom and can not at all. And I believe I read backups are not interchangeable between CW and RA.
You need to restore amon_ra 1.8 as your recovery and then reflash your rom. Cwm backups are not compatible with ra.

I tried that. I re-downloaded the ROM's, placed on the root, flashed in Amon Ra and it completes but doesn't boot up. Out hangs at the white htc evo splash screen. The CWM broke my phone.
I'm trying to avoid flashing the stock RUU and rooting again. I'm guessing there may be a file thats conflicting. By the way I deleted ROM manager permanently.

you can do this using cwm(rom manager) , if its greyed out then dl the latest amon_ra1.8 and put on the root of your sd card, then try again thru cwm. thats what worked for me.
But yea the latest cwm update isnt something to get excited about. doesnt play nice on some evo's.
stick with good ole faithful Amon_Ra and start flashing from recovery, not from some app. its always stable and not to mention wipes correctly/easily
Any tips? I need to get my AOSP rom and Sense ROM loaded.

Myns WARM two point two 5 before I flash?

Ok, so I want to flash up to myns 5 but I hear you need to update radios. I also read a thread where someone did the flashing in the wrong order and bricked themselves. I need help, do the radios nedd to be flashed first or the rom?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Full wipe, then Flash the rom first then the radio and then flash the rest one buy one.
Would it cause a problem if I flashed them all at once?

Flash then all before leaving recovery. Also when flashing radios make sure you let them flash if it looks like your phone is stuck just leave it alone for half an hour. When flaking then you will see an android with adb arrow or a box with an arrow coming out of it this is normal DO NOT PULL BATTERY you will brick your phone.

So basically it will stay there for awhile and disappear?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
how old is your evo? when was it purchased .. when was it built?
did you check if you radios need to be updated??
this maybe unnecessary.
radio update.. is your biggest concern... once started.. you must let it finish... even if it looks like it is locked.. if you have to leave it run for 1hr.. let it run till it finishes.. till it boots back up to recovery!!!! make sure you have a full charge on battery!!!!
if you interfere with it.. the radio can be crapped.. and the phone has a high chance of being bricked.
I'm just worried about the brick part. I know if I flash a different kernel I won't need radio update, it's that correct?

i am a little worried on that question.. not sure if read it right...
are you asking?
if you can change the kernel.. INSTEAD of upgrading the radio?
answer = NO; they are totoally different things. Radio is way lower in the phone.. and is done deep down... that is why it can Brick your phone.
the radio needs to be updated.. once..
it will work with everything else...
unless a new radio is released.. but they do not change them very often.
then..
kernels and ROMs can be changed as often as you wish...
What I mean is stock on myns 5 requires a radio update however ziggy or another kernel does not. Is this true? The stock kernel needs the radio update or the rom?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
it is required for all new ROMs... and all new Kernels.
you need to do it.. if you dont already have it.
have you even checked if you have the new radios? how old is your phone?
boot into amon ra recovery. If you have clockwork recovery use rom manager to flash amon ra recovery.
Download myns's rls5 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
download the latest radio combo update here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
Place both files on the root of your sdcard
1.Backup apps via titanium or or some other method.
2. Wipe data , cache, dalvik cache 3x each.
3. Choose install zip from sdcard.
4. Flash latest radio update combo.
5. Follow all prompts. Be patient the radio flash takes a few minutes. DO NOT PULL BATTERY! Let it finish. It will go back to recovery when done.
6. Reboot device after radio flash complete. Then go to menu--> settings-->system updates--> update profile.
you have now flashed radio combo
Then reboot into recovery. Wipe data/cache/dalvix 3x each again.
Choose install zip from sdcard.
choose myn's rls5 and flash
enjoy
tim
I have some questions about what you just said. wipe 3 times, what's the basis? Also I'm not familiar with amon. One more thing I am confused about, didn't Myn post in his thread to flash the rom first?

the stock kernel need radios updated a custom kernel will not just flash the rom then before leaving recovery flash the custom kernel
So flash a different kernel before leaving recovery so I don't have to get a new radio?

Well I'm using warmsR5 and haven't update radios and its working great, I was scared as you, didn't want to brick my phone so what i did was,....download R5 and a custom kernel, save them in my memory card then...
I went in to recovery, wipe all, data, cache etc, flash R5, and before rebooting, wipe just the cache and dalvik, and flash the custom kernel, sbc 4.1.9.1 I think , it went great!
I think you only need to update radios if your planning to keep the stock kernel, let me knorr if this works for you.

You CAN use setcpu with a HAVS kernel, but doing so would be counter productive, as the HAVS basically has a built in setcpu. I still have it on my phone, just disable at the moment.

Some more details would be spectacular, such as which apps you're trying to use that give you that error. Do any other root apps work? What method did you use to root? Do you have the 'super user' app installed on your phone? When you boot to the bootloader, does it show Ship S off or Ship S on? What method did you use to flash the rom? Did you do it manually in recovery, or did you use ROM Manager?
When I boot to recovery it shows s-on. I don't remember the exact app name but it was used to manage power and cpu usage to boost performance. I used unrevoked root method found on xda.

Okay, you should be S off, not S on. Since you have custom recovery installed, you need to download the unrevoked forever s off tool, and flash it in recovery. Then boot back to your bootloader, and be sure that you're S off. At that point, I'd boot back to recovery, do a full wipe (data/factory reset, cache, dalvik cache, and flash calkulin's format all.zip), then reflash your rom. See if it works after that.
Much appreciated friend. To be continued.

Not a problem. And if you are on the newest version of clockwork recovery, you may not be able to flash that Calkulin's Format all.zip. You may need to flash King's format all zip instead, which I will attatch for you. Just remember, that after you flash either of the Format all.zip's, you need to flash a new ROM before you boot up. Once you flash the Format all.zip, everything geti's wiped, and you won't be able to boot up.
So instead of calkulins use kingsmod? Now.I don't wipe again one I use kingsmod do I?

Correct, they both do the same thing, except king's is edify compatible, which makes it gingerbread and clockwork 3.0+ friendly.
Also...kings black titanium is my first flashed rom. I like it...but I don't want to miss out on something better. I am sure I will try other roms ...but in the meantime...any suggestions for performance and stability roms. I've seen screenshots of overclocked phones....the response of my current rom is great...but I am into full customization. Any ideas from those who know?

...sounds like you should try CM7
I recommend CM7. You just need to download and flash the latest gapps with it.
Someone wanna give the pros and cons of cm7? I have heard it plenty of times. Same type of thing right? I can flash cm7 straight from. Zip on my sd card?

http://goo-inside.me/gapps/latest/7/universal/ < gapps [google apps] you flash them in recovery after flashing a new gingerbread rom, its so that your market, gmail, ect installs and work. And CM7 offers a lot of customization, plenty of themes, ect. You can overclock your phone using setcpu or from settings > cyanogen mod settings > performance > cpu settings. The only real con is a few select apps don't have gingerbread support yet, like juice defender, I believe. And if you want to update your PRL, you have to flash a sense rom, update, flash back, but that's easy.
Okay so that zip file is the gapps for cm7 rom? Now is the cm7 fast and responsive and is it a gingerbread based rom? I've been doing this replying back and forth from my phone...havent done the research yet.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
PERFECT!!!
Okay now I am S-OFF. Thanks for the help guys...also...i was peeping in on mikifroyo 4.6, if i can get another lead on flashing roms...first data/factory reset, then wipe cache, then wipe dalvik, then i can flash new rom? Or do i need to flash a format all.zip first?
im running myns warm 2.2 i love sense i've been to cm7 and back a hundred times that with netarchy's 4.3.1 kernel is nice fast pretty decent battery life too but ya gotta give it day or so to see better life and lots of mods for myns too. id rather wait for gingerbread til someone other than cm to come out with one

[Q] RomManager/CWM

I running CM7 (nightly 58) and I already have CWM flashed, but when I open ROM Manager, it claims I don't and wants to flash it for me. Is there any harm in doing this? I have CWM version 3.0.0.5 showing when I reboot, and ROM Manager 4.1.0.0 installed.
Maybe it wants you to update to the latest version? (3.0.0.8)
I don't know, I don't use rom manager..

It won't hurt to reflash on top of it, even if it is already flashed.
The other thing that could be happening, if you delete the clockworkmod folder on your sdcard it will ask you to reflash. It uses the folder to keep track of what version you have.
What it wants to do is flash 3.0.0.8. You can do it with no problems. If you want to switch back to 3.0.0.5, just go to the section at the bottom that shows all clockwork recoveries and choose one.

Question re: updating Radio, Wimax, PRI, NV, and hboot.

I was hoping someone could explain to me how to update the Radio, Wimax, pri, nv, and hboot and exactly what doing this does. I have been reading all over but can't seem to find any info on this or the steps to take to do this. I have cm recovery if it matters. Thanks in advance for the help. Much appreciated.
Put the radio zip. File on root of your sd card, then rename it PCIMG36zip. Then go into hboot recovery, it should pick the file up and ask if you want to flash, clik yes and then yes then when comolete reboot. As far as a kernal put on your sd root and then flash it in normal ra or cwm recovery dont update your hboot theres no reason to.

I provided a link below that are flashable in recovery and recommend using Amon instead of CW, but PCIMG36.zip and yes it is. All of these flashes are not required, but often do aid in performance when done correctly. In correctly, I mean both knowing what versions you have and selecting a custom ROM. Some require certain versions of items to avoid issues (wake lock, etc).
More importantly.....knowing that you are flashing a RADIO or complete package that can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
and that doing anything with your phone (battery pull, stopping the process in any way) can and will probably lead to a useless paper weight. Flashing ROMS and MODS do not usually have such a great risk.

No worries, enjoy the tension of updating a radio....slow and steady.
I think this is the 1st phone I have owned that was so fickle about updates to radios and such. Theoretically these are called updates because they improve overall performance across the board. The Evo depends on location, Rom, mothers maiden name, high school gym teachers toupee color ect...
