We all know that HTC is heavily promoting the conference call feature with the big speaker on the back, but I haven't heard a single thing about the music quality.
So, a simple question to anyone who's been able to test out the TP2. How good is the speaker for listening to music?
Good question
I want to know too
Hope it has dual stereo speakers and not only one big on the back
Well, I thought I saw something like this in its launch video, and all it said about speakers is "Bi-Amped Dual Speaker phone". I think that means two speakers. The video is here if you'd like to interpret it for yourself. And maybe I'm just crazy, but I think I remember hearing that there is a dedicated woofer and tweeter on this device, so that could very well mean good audio quality. In addition, since HTC is advertising that conference calling feature so much, it seems that they would want good audio quality on it, otherwise it's just another speaker phone capable device. Just my thoughts anyway.

Judging from HTC's spec, "Noise-cancelling dual microphones and speakers", suggests more than 1 speaker. It ends with an 'S'. So 2 Speakers. 2 Speakers must be better than 1.
Guys, I am aware that the specs are better, but I'm wondering how that translates into real world performance. A speaker that's good enough for clear conference calls, isn't necessarily good enough for quality music playback
I can understand you completely. I think the only ones that can answer this is the ones that had the device for preview testings. Or you can wait until June, when it comes out.
For those that arnt aware, Bi-amped means the one speaker takes in two signals. Usualy one signal for the low frequences, and another for the mid's and highs. This results (due to genraly more power to the speaker) in cleaner/louder sound. But its also dependant on how much power is being put to it.
In theory, if these little speakers are in fact, bi-amped, they should sound alot better than if they were not, but this could also mean it sucks up more battery power.
I am a musician trying to use an EVO G4 to do quick recordings while composing songs w/ vocal and guitar. I have been using "Hi Fi Recorder", a 5.00 app. Its better than the voice recorder that came with the phone, but still distorted highs.
questions:
1. Can the voodoo kernel be installed on an EVO G4? A friend recommended this, but it appears that it only works on Samsung kernel.
2. Am I just limited by the microphone in the phone anyway, should I just give it up? I know just by nature of its physical size it should have limitations...
3. Is there another app out there that may do better than Hi Fi Recorder?
4. Any other suggestions? Not looking for studio quality obviously, but it would be nice to get a non-distorted recording...
Bump for the early morning people waking up.
I feel your pain, as I have also been down that road. As far as I know, it's a hardware limitation. The mic is just too small to record cleanly. I can't really think of anything that would fix it.

On the phone, no, you cannot plug another mic into it. However you could record on your computer, with a mixer, etc...

get a decent microphone, the best you can afford, and a usb mixer, and record on your computer.
How is your external speaker (eg speaker phone, music, etc) sound quality?
Got my Dinc2 on Friday and the sound quality is terrible. There's a buzzing sound almost as if the speaker is blown or loose.
My original Dinc had surprisingly good sound from the external speaker even at higher volumes.
just went from My Dinc to Dinc 2 today. the first song I played you can really tell the difference and see how bad the Dinc 2's speaker is compared to its original
Yeah, its really bad, it cracks/pops a lot too. When I hook it up to my car stereo thru a headphone cable, it cracks a lot too, I think maybe the way the phone processes audio isn't the best. Could be my cord though. I'm disappointed in the sound, other than that though, I love the phone. Came from Droid 2.

There seems to be an overdrive issue (overdrive meaning pushing too much through the audio ports, be it headphones, bluetooth, or the speaker). I've noticed it seems to vary based on media volume controls, and HTC seems to have implemented a large array of media volume controls that step on each other.
This is one of the reasons I'm really looking forward to ditching Sense and getting back to CM. I need more predictable media controls.
sound issues
Came from a blackberry to the I2, it seems to me that I'm not getting the volume on notifications and what not, keep missing them. I did notice that the head phone jack was pretty sloppy when trying to use the head phones, had to tinker with it to get it to work, haven't found a good way to hook to my car stereo yet as it doesn't have Bluetooth or a way to plugin, any suggestions on good devices are welcome.
Mine definately sounds like it's in a tin can, but i don't have any popping. I think with the right audio manager to correct some of it, it should be fine once we get root.
Mine is pretty rough also. I was sorta shocked at the quality of it on such a nice phone
I guess I was lucky...mines pretty good

I am also very disappointed with the sound quality of the Dinc 2. Is it a software issue or a speaker problem? I just hope it can be fixed or it may be a deal breaker for me. HTC really blew this one.
i did notice that it can sound a little better by turning on the SRS enhancement mode but not good enough to satisfy me.

Its gotta be a software issue, speaker and earpiece speaker sound pretty poor compared to Inc 1 at medium to higher volumes.. maybe update or custom roms will fix.. really my only complaint with this phone besides the custom options I've grown used to on sr4.0 and cm7

I've found something interesting about this issue.
When playing from any media player playing local media, or playing from Slacker, I get problems with playback quality on the speaker and through bluetooth (not so much through headphones though). However, pure streaming media (such as DI FM's app) is clean and clear on the speaker and on bluetooth. This definitely smells of a software problem.
The I2 does have SRS support. Unfortunately the only SRS controls I've seen are in video playback, and it's just a toggle. I've read about other devices having audio quality problems with SRS and I wonder if this is what's going on. I've tried digging around to see if I can completely disable it, but no luck yet. Might have to dig in under the hood.
External speaker is a bit sub-par, but all other audio on mine (including earpiece speaker, headphones, and bt) sounds fine. I could see it being a software issue, though, based on the other replies here.
SRS can also be turned on through the stock music app. Sounds better but not great

That could be why I missed it there. I don't use the stock app.
So, thanks to the unlock finally being released, I'm running CM7 now. My bluetooth audio seems to have cleared up, no more overdrive effect coming through my car speakers. I don't think the external speaker is up to par, still, though. However, bluetooth audio definitely improved, at least so far. Needs more testing.
We received two Dinc2 last week at different day, first one sounds like rock in tin can, it buzz at higher volume, and the lower frequency range is horrid, lots of distortion. my 2nd Dinc2 sounds much better and do not have the same characteristics as the first one, but it is still not as good as the fascinate they replaced. I requested to get the first one replace and VZW is sending me another one, it's definitely not normal when I compare both Dinc2 side by side listening to the same clips, first one is significantly worst.
I wish the speaker was abit louder.. i haven't had any crackles or pops though.
Coming from my original dinc the higher volumes on the dinc 2 do cause a lot of crackling. Listening to the howard stern show I can't have the volume all the way up like I used to :/ .

I mostly agree. When using the speaker phone, it is beyong horrid. However, when playing youtube videos, it is not nearly as bad. So the audio processing from these two different sources is completely different.
I go to quite a few concerts and get a lot of really great videos only to check later and realize that the audio is completely distorted. This is true whether I'm at an acoustic show or and DJ Set with heavy bass. Is this just a flaw of the E4GT (and most smart phones) when recording videos that have really loud audio? Is this specific to the E4GT or do I just have a broken mic? It records just fine in non concert situations so I don't think I have an issue with the mic.
Thanks
If the audio source is too loud, it distorts.
I don't think the phone has a functioning agc for the camcorder. Automatic gain control. My canon point and shoot does within reason. Concerts? That's pretty darn loud!

This. Concerts can be VERY loud, way too loud for a crappy cell phone mic. There's nothing wrong with your phone. Even the acoustic show can be too loud, depending on how loud the PA is, and even if it isn't too loud, there still could be way too much background (ie. audience) noise for it to get a decent recording of the music.
My OG Epic did a fine job at concerts...heck even my old Touch Pro 2 did OK. The problem here is the lack of noise cancellation, and gain.

So its just a hardware issue. The mic can't handle really loud audio. Are there any software fixes or tricks to try and get better audio or is this just an issue that will get better as phones advance and use higher quality hardware for the audio recording?
You can try LG camera it's free in the play store, it has settings for higher audio quality.
I think if we had some kind of volume control for the Mic it would work
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
It's true. I'm on my 3rd E4GT, and all of them distort audio horribly when recording video or sounds. I haven't found a workaround. There is an app in the Play Store that can adjust input gain on the mic, but it won't work unless the kernel supports mic gain. The app is called HD2 Mic Control. When I open the app, it says my kernel needs something called
/proc/mic_level.
This is a terribly frustrating thing about our handset. The video recording is gorgeous, but the mic can't handle an acoustic performance from ten feet in front of the stage. Grrr!
Bump. Help!
Afro Brick Is In Your Face Rock!!
EDIT:
I just found this thread for the HTC Leo:HD2. Apparently someone put out a Sense kernel with proc/mic_level support for microphone input level control. The thread is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2117084
I am clueless about development, but maybe one of our kind kernel devs would see if this could be incorporated into one of our kernels, so we can finally drop input gain and get some decent audio recordings with our phones? That would really help to make 2014 a much better sounding year. Just putting it out there.
Happy New Year, my XDA friends! All the best to you and yours! Cheers!
I'm looking to buy a new phone. The audio quality is an important aspect for me..
Right now I have a Galaxy S6 which is OK. Not the best, not the worst.
Would it be a downgrade or an upgrade? Also,if anyone can compare it with the OP3(which is mediocre) ..that would be great.

I cant speak for a comparison to the OP3, but I've heard very good things about the headphone jack (if thats the kind of audio quality you're looking for) on the moto z play, and I have actually used it with my ATH-M50x headphones and it works very well. Headphone jack plays loud and clear with no background hissing. Speaker quality, I think its pretty good, its fairly loud and sounds pretty good. If you really want amazing audio quality you can use the jbl moto mod which will give you very good sound and be really loud (I own one and I love it).

Anyone having issues with music sound quality through the headphone jack should try making sure the equalizer in the stock google play music app is completely off, and then disabling the app in settings. After that reboot the phone. For me it was a night and day difference...

I didn't even have a chance to test this nor did I think about it until you asked. but I have a pair of Shure SHR440's they are amazing reference headphones. The sound coming out of this phone is well, it's... sound. Honestly if you're an audiophile look elsewhere. So far that's the only thing I really don't like about the phone. Like it's so bad I may return the thing. My ears are telling me that the sound is heavily compressed for some reason. The cymbals in every song sound all washy and weird like when you download a ****ty MP3 by mistake. The bass has no punch and the mids sound like your listening through a metal garbage can. For me personally it's near unlistenable but I enjoy good quality sound in my music and have a tough time listening when it doesn't sound the way it's supposed to. My LG G3 has better sound to a degree that's almost hard to imagine... I'm gonna keep running tests but I think it's the DAC in the phone itself. It just sucks. Like yeah it's loud. But that's all.

Idk what you are talking about. I am coming from a z3 and I like the sound quality from the 3.5mm. Have you tried using poweramp?
I was using player pro... I'll give Poweramp a try. But I will say this even on YouTube the sound difference through the jack is crazy noticeable between this and the LG G3 I literally just tested it. Also what lind of music are you listening to? Because if it's dance or hip-hop or any kinda pop you're not gonna notice much of a difference.

So weird discovery? ... Rebooted the phone out of frustration but prior to rebooting I went into the google play music app disabled all the equalizer settings then disabled the app in settings. Upon reboot the sound quality seems better? Like a lot better? I have no idea why or how? But that seems to have done it. Also I did download Poweramp just for kicks and it's nice, I'll give it a shot for a while and see if it's worth buying.

So far the best smartphone I owned in the audio department was the HTC One M9, with its frontal dual speakers, as they were stereo, loud and clear, it always blew me away whenever I saw YouTube, Netflix or listened to music (without phones). Listening to music using the audio jack (or Bluetooth phones) it was an OK experience, nothing extraordinary, compared to the previous smartphones I owned (obviously with improvements phones have over the years).
As the HTC One M9 is last year's phone, I'd be logical to look into HTC One M10 (or better), as it should have better processing and screen configurations (and if HTC is smart enough, they kept or improved the already awesome frontal speakers).
The Moto Z Play has just one frontal speaker and (for me) is good enough, nothing compared to the HTC, but packs a decent punch if you want to see a video or listen to an audio, but to really listen to music or videos out loud, I'd advise you buying the JBL Mod, I personally do not own one but I've read good reviews about it, and you'd have a little more battery, I guess this Mod also comes with its own battery to power the speakers
Sorry not to compare with the OP3, but I don't have enough knowledge with this phone to have a relevant comparison.
Hope this helped! Cheers!

The HTC One M9 is better equalized, the bass in the Moto Z Play is more noticeable, but if you get a third party app that best equalizes the Moto Z Play it'll be just as great.
I haven't downloaded such app yet, but it shouldn't be hard to find. And use your own phones, the one that comes with the Moto Z Play sucks big time (at least for me).
I'd also be better for you to have more feedback from other users of the Moto Z Play, as audio is a very particular subject which varies from person to person.
I would like to add that the Z Play doesn't support every audio format out there. The hardware decoder is weak therefore I'd strongly recommend the "Neutron" music app which comes with its own software decoder. Or even the JetAudio or basically any app with a S/W decoder.

ya agree , i am using z play rooted with viper4android installed. & it sounds Best with 3.5mm jack it can beat any device if configure proper
Quickly tested the audio quality of my new Z Play against my old Note 4 910C with Wolfson audio chip.
I use a pair of Ultimate Ears Triple FI 10. (IEM's which costed about 300€ some years ago.) Listened to some fast Punk songs.
I would not call me an Audiophile - I can't hear a difference between 320 KBit MP3 and Flac. But of course between 128 kBit and 320 kBit.
So I do care about good audio quality.
I could not notice a significant difference between the Note and the Moto. Even if there was one I wouldn't be able to tell which one was better. Different headphones or a heavily compressed audio file will for sure make way much more of a difference.
To be sure I ordered this external DAC: http://hifimediy.com/tiny-dac
It's an external Sabre DAC with improved Jitter and noise level at a very tiny size. Curious to see if I find a difference, but I don't expect very much.
I think the Moto as all recent phones delivers a very neutral and loud enough sound output at pones that don't need to much pwer.
its good but not the best
Coming from the V10, it's definitely a step down but not bad. For over-ear or on-ear portable headphones that are designed to be efficient,it's not bad at all. For sensitive IEMs, the signal isn't clean enough, you can hear a background hiss and interference from the cell radio, etc. And of course driving higher impedance headphones well like the V10 can do is out of the question.
how is the external speaker? I have seen some reviews that say its average.. I know I want to make sure its decent...
I understand it can't compete with dual front facing speakers... but how does it compare to other similar speaker setup phones? I am glad it is at least front facing!

Did today also a small comparison with the 180 $ Sony walkman of my GF: Could not find a difference.
With high impedance headphones the Hifimediy Android DAC http://hifimediy.com/tiny-dac did a very good job to me. Tested it with 600 Ohm AKG K 141 - was still loud enough. Didn't seem to influence my battery.
So I have no concerns any more using the Moto as my portable audio device.
The sound signature thro' headphone jack is better than average. However, please don't buy moto z play if you love listening to music at lower volume thro' headphone jack. The background static, crackling sound is much higher as the radio antenna band is located very close to it ( a white band over usb type c port). Better the headphone quality more prominent is the static. I tried multiple in-ear headphones ( shure se 125 , Sennheiser cx 275s). It is design flaw.
