I hate Apple with a passion and I was rather excited to have a viable (superior) alternative to the iphone with the Touch Pro2. Everything about this phone has been fantastic until just now when I plugged in my headphones. I'm something of an audiophile and thus use some decent headphones. In the course of my listening, here are my findings:
The Touch Pro 2 performs great with less sensitive headphones (like Beyerdynamic DT770 80ohm), but with sensitive headphones like Grado's it sounds like CRAP.
Even more disappointing, using sensitive high end earbuds like my Super.Fi Pro 5's reveal SIGNIFICANT and DISTRACTING electrical noise. If you listen to quiet music like some classical or jazz, you will definitely notice it. While annoying, at least with music, the music itself usually overwhelms the noise.
Unfortunately, watching a video is a completely different story. In short, watching a video on this phone is like Chinese Water Torture with the electrical noise easily heard 100% of the time.
It's simply unacceptable for a manufacturer to produce a device in this day and age that has this kind of interference. They should really test a $500 device with earbuds that cost more than $10.
The whole point of this phone is for power users, and power users like us are the exact demographic that would have expensive (usually high sensitivity) headphones.
The noise is worst in the left channel.
This is on a Verizon TP2 for reference. Is this possibly just a defective phone or do others experience the same noise? FWIW you probably won't notice it with normal ibud's.
I have a pair of Sony MDR-EX71SL Fontopia's and dont have any issue with device feedback or interference. While they arent as nice as your headphones, they do a pretty good job, and have been a fantastic match on my Sprint TP2. Video/Music, no difference. I did tweak the equalizer a bit (Audio booster in programs menu), but that was for personal preference, and my music tastes.
What add-on programs have you installed? There could be something that got screwed up...
Otherwise take it in to the store with another MP3 player that has the same mp3 on it as your tp2 and have the rep listen to both, and ask to try it on a demo phone they have there, I'm sure they'll fix you up.

Hmmm, your Fontopia's look like they only have 100db sensitivity rating compared to 119db of my headphones. That could be why you don't hear the noise (please note that I'm not putting down your headphones, as sensitivity has very little to do with actual sound quality - it's simply an electrical measurement).
I can't hear any noise on my Sennheiser eh150's, nor on my 6.5" component speakers in my car.
Well... I'm surprised you would expect good sound quality from a device aimed squarely at the business market. The iPhone is designed for multimedia and does some businessy stuff on the side. The TP2 is designed for business use and does some multimedia stuff on the side. The performance is what you would expect, given that goal.

Well that sucks your not happy with the audio quality. I'd try to check the same song with your buds on another persons phone, and rule out a faulty device.
But if its not specific to your device I guess in this case more expensive isnt always better.
I'm very happy with the sound quality of my Fontopia's, I have a 16gb gen 2 ipod touch and I there is no quality difference between it and the TP2....
Absolutely no noise-floor issues here, using Shure se530s. In a direct comparisonj between my TP2 and the 3GS I would say the TP2 is easily as good, if not better.
Sounds like you have a faulty phone. Not to be patronising but did you try a different USB/3.5mm adapter? I had one that was very "crackly", swapped it and that was perfect.

Okay, your shures have the exact same sensitivity as my UE's, so it should be able to pick up the noise. Have you tested with video using HTC Album?
What about background hiss while music is playing?
My phone is starting to develop the oil slick problem so I might just swap it out anyway.
Also, just a note, the Verizon phone has the 3.5mm jack, so no need for a dongle. Internally though, I do wonder what the electronics look like, and if it's just a hardwired (though smaller) dongle.
I use the Sennheiser CX300-B ear buds and can definitely hear background hiss. I can hear it when I initially plug them in then, if I don't do anything the hiss goes away until it plays something. Sounds like when the amp turns on then I hear the hiss. I hear it for music, voice prompts everything. You can hear the same thing by pausing the music and you will hear a hiss for a couple seconds, then it goes away.
When I have music playing I cannot hear it, but do hear it during the quiet times of the song.
I've found this to be true with these earbuds for pretty much any player I use that is not dedicated to audio only. I always figured they just do not spend the $$ to put in good audio capabilities in the multi-use devices.

If I listen to the FM radio I can definitely hear interference, usually listening to NPR (talk radio). Though not sure if it is slightly less then perfect reception or an actual sound issue. I feel as though the mini usb connector is less then ideal. It has a lot of wiggle. Wonder if that is part of the problem.
This is with the factory ear buds.. have yet to really listen to music on it, or with good ear buds.. or through my car stereo(where I usually listen to music with my phone)
OK, after typing all that I guess I am not sure if mine has this problem! LOL But I will leave this post here so I can update it after I use the sound output more.

Your best headphones for monitoring are over the ear
Don't have any issues with my Verizon unit. I have hooked it up directly to RXV3800, Sennheiser HD380, and M-Audio DSM2 and hear nothing I have not heard with other MP3 players including the ipod.
I noticed my Verizon TP2 had flatter sound than my mp3 player with the same phones, but after a little EQ adjustment in Nitrogen, they sound just fine.
You guys have way too much time on your hands to complain about those things.

I find it's laughable that you don't know what you're talking about.
My earbuds are every bit as good as your headphones, and earbuds exist (like the UE11) that obliterate even the best studio monitors in detail, frequency response, linearity, immediacy, transient resoponse, etc. In fact, they obliterate studio monitors in literally everything MAYBE soundstaging and impact.

Besides, you completely missed the entire point of the thread by saying "Nope, everything good driving my low sensitivity headphones!"
For the umpteenth time, you will not be able to hear this noise with low sensitivity headphones (as I confirmed with my DT770's). This problem only relates to driving high sensitivity cans.

This confirms what I was saying. The sensitivity of your earbuds is 112db, which is far higher than the other posters 100ish range.
It would appear that this might not just be a defective phone that I have, and that it could actually be a more widespread problem.

Except that he claims to hear it on several devices, not just this phone. Also he claims to hear it only during the quiet parts, not during actual sound reproduction, whilst you hear it at all times...
It could be the adapter, a faulty phone, or just a phone not designed for high-end hedphones.
Good luck with this. I love high quality headphones but use bluetooth to listen to music (yes, I hear the difference, but when I have cables they always get wonky and stop working properly).
Now if the phone had KLEER technology I'd happily go for that
This sounds more like thread on bragging about your super duper headphones than anything to do with the TP2.
But maybe they arent so super duper if cheaper ones sound better.
Get past it, if you want a dedicated music player that lets you become immersed in 1024bit crystal clear audio go get whatever that is.
If you want a music player that sounds pretty damn good, can also take phone calls, browse the web, manage your schedule, send/receive emails and txt, take pictures, go buy a cheaper set of headphones.

Guys, DO you think HTC have resolve the soft speaker that is on the Nexus One?
Hopefully, HTC improved the speaker fidelity in Desire or used a better speaker brand in Desire... Doesn't make sense that HTC used a lousy speaker for the Nexus One for an expensive phone..
Yeah i would like to have an answer for this too, as i have Touch Diamond now and the quality of the speaker is very, very poor.. This was only only thing which made me think should i buy desire or not, if the speaker is not good in desire either, i will wait till next year or buy nokia or something worse..

Just took a phonecall from the missy over the loudspeaker. Could barely understand her. Its not that good.
I feel that in a phonecall the earpiece is fine but if you are using it handsfree or playing music it's pretty gash.

If you don't use full volume it's allright. But at some point it's not that good anymore.
I don't care. I never use the speaker, and when the phone rings it's more than loud enough. If I want good sound quality, I will never use a phone speaker.. ever..
Very disappointed that HTC couldn't manage to get a decent speaker (unlike the iPhone). It's not a show stopper for me but it's still not good for an otherwise high-spec phone.
The sound quality (via speaker) is quite frankly atrocious, whether it's for calls or music. I'm keeping my 3GS to use as an iPod.
What bets that speaker fidelity will be one of the features apple have focused on for the new iPhone, given their iTunes market.
Absolutely love my Desire (proud owner for about 10 hours). HArdware and software very impressive. Yet to find out about the battery life.

The speaker is half decent, battery life - crap. Other things make up for it, though.

I'm guessing the fact they are squeezing so much processing power and screen into the thing, and the battery to power it. Speaker space wasn't such a premium a few years back.
Coming from a Touch HD, the speaker is 10x better. I have had no problems hearing alerts in noisy environments. Music sounds pretty good for being a single tiny speaker. I think it's as good as iPhone speakers.

iPhone sounds like a boombox compared to the Desire.
And it's only through a 4 mm hole.
I've compared the Desire speaker to my Samsung Omnia HD: the Desire clearly lacks bass. Although the Omnia HD speakers sound muffled in comparison.
I guess there's no perfect speaker on cell phones.

There is no way that HTC Desire speaker match the speaker on iPhone 3GS.
I have both and it’s pretty obvious that the speaker in iPhone 3GS is much better than Desire's.
Anyway, for me, that’s the only thing that iPhone 3GS is better than Desire.
It's got a headphone jack, I'm quite happy to plug my little portable Sony speakers into that. I just cycled home from work and had forgot my headphones.. so had my favourite dancehall reggae mix playing through the loudspeaker in my pocket, it sounded fine, even full blast. Agreed nothing to write home about but it aint bad.
Will post again when I can test it for handsfree.

testing with sound on computer, when you set the equalizer to full treble, it sounds like something close to what comes out of the desire, if there was a way to play around with the equalizer settings the quality may be improved?
So, there is nothing wrong specifically with my handset? I was thinking about returning it.
When I hear calls using phone's default speaker, the sound comes okay till one volume level. If I move up, the sound distorts.
If I use speaker-phone, things are worse. After a certain level, sound crackles a lot.
For music via phone's loud speaker, the sound doesn't crackle. But as identified by many, I can hear music with no bass & lots of treble.
Is this normal for Desire?
Comparing it with my wife's N95 (which has stereo speakers) was a nightmare for me.
I am not happy at all abuot the sound quality its too low, so I contacted them and ther reply is:

You aren't very clear. Is your problem the quality or the volume? And is your phone branded or not? Branded phones are sometimes limited in volume.
i am not happy about the low handsfree rear speaker volume either. the phone ear piece speaker is ok volume wise. but the handsfree speaker is pretty crap and might probably take the crown for the worst handsfree speaker on the market. i have two desire phones and both are the same. loads of similar complaints on many forums (moneysavingexpert, avforums, three blog and others). htc must be having the heads in the sand if they havent heard about it. i think it is a deliberate denial of an obvious poor handsfree speaker, htc had some chap called dave who said he was following the posts on three blog and replied about poor stocks etc so HTC is aware about this issue, they are just dishing out denials or htc tech guys need to have their ears checked ASAP.
just put anyother phone or media player next to the htc desire and play the same sound / music via all the devices and htc desire will most probably take the crown for having the poorest rear speaker. at high volumes (which one needs anyway if one wants to hear in anywhere where the background noise is present) there is a lot of treble noise. on my archos 605 if i keep half the volume, for the same clip i wont get as good a volume on my desire at full volume. it is pretty easy to miss the notifications when out and about because one didnt hear the notifications.
the poor volume is obvious while using google navigation. while tomtom 760T has a great volume, but when i use the desires speakers for navigation voice, i have to keep the music off and can get tricky in busy traffic as sometimes the volume isnt enough or is barely enough. this might not be a problem when using car stereo with bluetooth but my car stereo does not have bluetooth or an input socket in the front as it is a few years old car.
the notifications volume must be with some internal settings i canty access as i have tried adjusting everything but it does not make a difference, or much of it. but the new yahoomail app i got from the market has a much much better volume that is easily audible. for the other notifications i downloaded the 'car mode' app that makes the notifications louder by using the rear speaker, i guess otherwise it uses the earpiece speaker by default, hence the low volume for the notifications. the volume is ok when inside and when it is quiet but just not enough when out and about. i didnt have a problem with speaker volumes with any of my handsets in the last decade, i am just adding that my ears are fine as they get checked by occupational health at work!

I bought 2 HTC Desire phones for me & my wife. Both of them have the most lowest & weakest speakerphones I have witnessed in any phone over the last 10 years. Even the regular flip phones which are not smartphones had the good quality speakerphones for conference. It's a shame having such a Flagship phone with pathetic speakerphone.
I called HTC customer service and though I already new their scripted answer I still asked 'Is it a known issue?'. There reply was what I expected. Complete Denial. 'No, this is the first time we are hearing it.' What a joke. I told him to do some google and check the forums. I also complimented him for lying so well.
He asked me to do soft reset, hard reset and do factory reset which would wipe out all data. Simply put they were giving me a run around & wasting my time so I stopped him right there that son I have already done that.
He transferred me to their Repair department, who turned out to be Telus customer service and they said since it's a new phone you have a 1 year warranty, take your phone to the store you bought it from with the receipt and they'll replace it. I asked what if the replaced phone also have the same problem then what are my options. She said you need to discuss it with the store from where you bought it from, they can let you have another phone but you can't break the 3 year contract.
Dealing with the phones issue is frustrating enough and on top of that frustration caused by the absolute denial by HTC's customer service & not providing a solution is totally unacceptable. I'm selling my HTC Desire on ebay and probably buy the Nokia N8.
Sometimes all what a customer needs is an apology and admission that yes we are not crazy, there is a known issuee with the phone and they'll fix it. But they are following on the footsteps of Apple who literally made their customers feel like they are crazy when they reported about iphone 4 antenna issues. Shame on Apple for telling them that they are not holding the phone properly as if dealing with ignorant kids. Such behavior isn't expected from such large and reputable corporations. Nokia on the other hand makes the best phones and admit their problems and fix them.
What do expect from a tiny rear speaker?? If you want decent sound then plug in some speakers!!

To be fair, I also have a T-Mobile Pulse Mini as a backup phone, and the internal speaker is way, way, better than the one on the Desire.
IMHO, the Desire's speak is "ok", if you want to take/make a handsfree call whilst sitting at your desk, but is worse than useless if you are in a car - for both taking calls and satellite navigation. I do have bluetooth handsfree, so it is less of an issue for me personally, but given the price of the phone I think they could've made the internal speaker a little higher quality.

But the phone isn't a media player in the traditional sense, you wouldn't watch a film on it without headphones...given, it could be a bit louder for the navigation side of things but I've got Sat Nav for that...

I wouldn't only because it would sound terrible from the external speaker. If it sounded better, it is something that I might well do.

Desires loudspeaker is a disgrace even a £5 mobile phone loudspeaker is better.

The headphone volume is really low on my desire (stock t-mobile rom) even with hi end noise cancelling headphones and volume at max (am told this is a problem with the t-mobile rom), now I use mixzing which has a gain and graphic for music. It is almost imposible to watch a film while on the underground tho, which is really annoying me, am waiting to see if the froyo update fixes this, if not I will root and change to unbranded rom.

Personally, I've never had a problem with the speaker volume on my Desire, its a lot louder than my my old iPhone, if a bit tinny.

I'm looking to buy a new phone. The audio quality is an important aspect for me..
Right now I have a Galaxy S6 which is OK. Not the best,not the worst.
Would it be a downgrade or an upgrade?Also,if anyone can compare it with the OP3(which is mediocre) ..that would be great.

I cant speak for a comparison to the OP3, but I've heard very good things about the headphone jack (if thats the kind of audio quality you're looking for) on the moto z play, and I have actually used it with my ATH-M50x headphones and it works very well. Headphone jack plays loud and clear with no background hissing. Speaker quality, I think its pretty good, its fairly loud and sounds pretty good. If you really want amazing audio quality you can use the jbl moto mod which will give you very good sound and be really loud (I own one and I love it).

Anyone having issues with music sound quality through the headphone jack should try making sure the equalizer in the stock google play music app is completely off, and then disabling the app in settings. After that reboot the phone. For me it was a night and day difference...

For me personally it's near unlistenable but I enjoy good quality sound in my music and have a tough time listening when it doesn't sound the way it's supposed to. My LG G3 has better sound to a degree that's almost hard to imagine... I'm gonna keep running tests but I think it's the DAC in the phone itself. It just sucks. Like yeah it's loud. But that's all.

Idk what you are talking about. I am coming from a z3 and I like the sound quality from the 3.5mm. Have you tried using poweramp?
I was using player pro... I'll give Poweramp a try. But I will say this even on YouTube the sound difference through the jack is crazy noticeable between this and the LG G3 I literally just tested it. Also what lind of music are you listening to? Because if it's dance or hip-hop or any kinda pop you're not gonna notice much of a difference.

So weird discovery? ... Rebooted the phone out of frustration but prior to rebooting I went into the google play music app disabled all the equalizer settings then disabled the app in settings. Upon reboot the sound quality seems better? Like a lot better? I have no idea why or how? But that seems to have done it. Also I did download Poweramp just for kicks and it's nice, I'll give it a shot for a while and see if it's worth buying.

So far the best smartphone I owned in the audio department was the HTC One M9, with its frontal dual speakers, as they were stereo, loud and clear, it always blew me away whenever I saw YouTube, Netflix or listened to music (without phones). Listening to music using the audio jack (or Bluetooth phones) it was an OK experience, nothing extraordinary, compared to the previous smartphones I owned (obviously with improvements phones have over the years).
As the HTC One M9 is last year's phone, I'd be logical to look into HTC One M10 (or better), as it should have better processing and screen configurations (and if HTC is smart enough, they kept or improved the already awesome frontal speakers).
The Moto Z Play has just one frontal speaker and (for me) is good enough, nothing compared to the HTC, but packs a decent punch if you want to see a video or listen to an audio, but to really listen to music or videos out loud, I'd advise you buying the JBL Mod, I personally do not own one but I've read good reviews about it, and you'd have a little more battery, I guess this Mod also comes with its own battery to power the speakers
Sorry not to compare with the OP3, but I don't have enough knowledge with this phone to have a relevant comparison.

Some software glitch maybe.
I listen to metal and classical mostly, with a bit of jazz and blues. Opeth, Dt, Tool, The Aristocrats Yada Yada.

The HTC One M9 is better equalized, the bass in the Moto Z Play is more noticeable, but if you get a third party app that best equalizes the Moto Z Play it'll be just as great.
I haven't downloaded such app yet, but it shouldn't be hard to find. And use your own phones, the one that comes with the Moto Z Play sucks big time (at least for me).
I'd also be better for you to have more feedback from other users of the Moto Z Play, as audio is a very particular subject which varies from person to person.
I would like to add that the Z Play doesn't support every audio format out there. The hardware decoder is weak therefore I'd strongly recommend the "Neutron" music app which comes with its own software decoder. Or even the JetAudio or basically any app with a S/W decoder.

Hey man, what I did was go into the google play music app under settings and then equalizer, make sure its all set to OFF. then go and disable the Google Play Music app in system settings and then reboot...

ya agree , i am using z play rooted with viper4android installed. & it sounds Best with 3.5mm jack it can beat any device if configure proper
Quickly tested the audio quality of my new Z Play against my old Note 4 910C with Wolfson audio chip.
I use a pair of Ultimate Ears Triple FI 10. (IEM's which costed about 300€ some years ago.) Listened to some fast Punk songs.
I would not call me an Audiophile - I can't hear a difference between 320 KBit MP3 and Flac. But of course between 128 kBit and 320 kBit.
So I do care about good audio quality.
I could not notice a significant difference between the Note and the Moto. Even if there was one I wouldn't be able to tell which one was better. Different headphones or a heavily compressed audio file will for sure make way much more of a difference.

It's an external Sabre DAC with improved Jitter and noise level at a very tiny size. Curious to see if I find a difference, but I don't expect very much.

Coming from the V10, it's definitely a step down but not bad. For over-ear or on-ear portable headphones that are designed to be efficient,it's not bad at all. For sensitive IEMs, the signal isn't clean enough, you can hear a background hiss and interference from the cell radio, etc. And of course driving higher impedance headphones well like the V10 can do is out of the question.
how is the external speaker? I have seen some reviews that say its average.. I know I want to make sure its decent...
I understand it can't compete with dual front facing speakers... but how does it compare to other similar speaker setup phones? I am glad it is at least front facing!

Did today also a small comparison with the 180 $ Sony walkman of my GF: Could not find a difference.
With high impedance headphones the Hifimediy Android DAC http://hifimediy.com/tiny-dac did a very good job to me. Tested it with 600 Ohm AKG K 141 - was still loud enough. Didn't seem to influence my battery.
So I have no concerns any more using the Moto as my portable audio device.
The sound signature thro' headphone jack is better than average. However, please don't buy moto z play if you love listening to music at lower volume thro' headphone jack. The background static, crackling sound is much higher as the radio antenna band is located very close to it ( a white band over usb type c port). Better the headphone quality more prominent is the static. I tried multiple in-ear headphones ( shure se 125 , Sennheiser cx 275s). It is design flaw.
Is anyone else getting an audio crackle when tapping the mic icon for voice typing? I remember this was fixed through software on my Pixel 2xl years back. It basically pops, sounds like it's clipping. VERY annoying.

Did a factory reset to see. The microphone in google own messaging app didn't seem to crackle, but through Textra it did.
No crackle for me even on max volume.
What I did notice is that the stereo speaks are imbalanced in terms of volume. The selfie camera side speaker sounds way more "muted" than the charger side speaker.

Agreed. MAYBE the volume levels are the same on both sides, but the selfie side definitely SOUNDS different. I also dislike the way notifications sound. It sounds like it's coming from the back of the phone going away from me, making it sound like it's coming from a different phone a couple feet away from me.

Audio balance has always been an issue with Pixel phones, although they made a change to the series 5 which boosted the ear piece one was called adpative sound, maybe it works as well for 6

Have you actually got the phone? All I've seen you do is comment after comment about how rubbish it is but nothing from you directly?

No crackle for me. I use the mic often and play podcasts through the speakers of the day. The speakers are good, clear and can get loud if ineed them to.
The popping/crackling sound is happening on my pixel 6 non-pro model. If sound is playing and I either type or move around to different screens this happens. Looks like I am returning it.
So far I've only noticed pixel 6 pro speakers crackling playing genshin impact, easily heard on the main menu, but so far only noticed it in that specific title. Not while playing music or other games. So I'm hoping it's software related and I don't have defective hardware.
No crackle so far, just rocken Music.

Too late, returned the phone and earbuds. Between this, the lousy fingerprint reader and the phone randomly calling people, I am done.

I dont get how people get so many issues with phones lol... I've never had problems with any of my phones and I've had many...
My FP works 100% of the time, it is just a bit slower than the rest, but even then, just barely. I have a S21 Ultra in front of me right now and after testing both, I can definitely say that the S21 Ultra is a bit faster, the Pixel one is actually more accurate. I would prefer to have it in the back like previous models.
Having said that, if I did have those issues you described I would return it too.
I feel like it's a software thing, honestly. Because when i first setup myh device before I downloaded all the updates, there wasn't any audtio crackle at high/max volume. After I downloaded the updates, it's there slightly.
I don't have crackling or distortion, but I'm getting a good deal of sibilance from both speakers. Here is a definition of sibilance.

I listen to a lot of YouTube podcasts and videos and this is driving me crazy. I wanted to see if anyone else is having this problem before I see about returning the phone. Adaptive sound and balance control makes no difference.
I have a 6 Pro and have noticed crackling from bottom speaker since purchase when turning speaker on during phone calls. For me I otherwise really like the phone. I will be doing a repair or exchange once more phones become available.
I got my replacement brand new 6 pro, and now this one has distorted and crackling sound from the earpiece speaker. When i press the middle part of the screen anywhere.
I have turned off the adaptive audio, and I can hear the balance over blutooth changing. With one headset when listening to a mono podcast, you can hear the audio balance shifting randomly around.
With another bluetooth headset (my hearing aids), the balance starts out biased to the right, but the longer you listen the more it drifts to the left. Stopping and starting the audio stream immediately corrects it.
What is going on -- I have had every OnePlus Pro model since the 6, never had any issue like this.
Anyone have anything similar and or no how to fix? It is so annoying....
