[Q] Launcher Pro/ADW running slow/choppy with widgets... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As title states, both launchers run pretty slow and choppy when running several widgets. I'm running last night's "nightly' with Pure Messenger and Pure Calendar widgets, along with stock news widget and feedr widget. After first reboot all is smooth, but after several minutes things become really really slow/choppy. I'm guessing it's a memory issue, but what specific settings do I need to adjust to smooth things back out? I'm sure I'm not the only one to experience this.
thanks guys,
Alan

Definitely sounds like a memory issue. You might have to cut back on a few things.
But first, try running the Snap kernel (I'd recommend 7.5-925) and see how that works for you.

Yea, I'm pretty sure it's memory related although I don't have that issue with Fresh's latest rom. I will try the snap kernel to see how that does...worth a shot.

Peformance tips?

I'm currently on CM6 and using LauncherPro. However, it seems a bit sluggish for some odd reason. My setup is sort of mimicking my Sense layout before I moved to CM6.
Calendar - Internet Stuff - Contact Widget plus shortcut - Beautiful Weather widget, BatteryLife widget plus a couple shortcuts - Entertainment shortcuts - Tools shortcuts - Pure Messenger w/ Facebook and Twitter only
The main thing I think that's slowing things down is the Beautiful Weather widget. Not sure, though. Any recommendations on alternates for the same functionality?
Another thing possibly slowing it down is that I set the pixel density down to 200 with the app. Though, it's only graphical lag that all this encompasses. Benchmark scores are on par. Perhaps Snap is causing issues?
Any tips on making LauncherPro faster?
Do you have window transitions set to fast in spare parts?
and I set my drawer opening speed to 8 and min scrolling speed to about 75
that's all I can think of right now..
I'm not sure what did it, but something just sapped my battery like whoa. About an hour ago my battery was at about 75% and now it's down to 17%. WTF mate.

Wow, that's terrible.
What rom setup are you running?
I don't know that much about PowerTop, specifically if it can be run remotely or if it needs to be on the phone but that would help narrow down the problem..
CM6 w/ Snap 8.2 875mV. I'm trying out ADW and it seems to be a bit snappier for some reason.

yeah, something is definitely wrong if ADW seems snappier than launcher pro...
fwiw, I know a lot of people have had great success with them but I haven't found an alternative kernel that has been as stable and predictable as the stock CM6 kernel. No offense, it's definitely me, not knowing how to work with and tweak them. The kernel may be related to your awful battery drain?
I just reflashed the nightly to get the stock kernel. Gonna let that sit for a bit and see how it goes.
Agreed

I'm gonna have to agree with you there.
I had Kingklick #6 kernel (yes, I have a Sense-based rom) and my battery life was shot to death.
Hopefully upping to #8 will help.
Make sure that you have the current version of whatever Kernel you are using.

cm6 v.s. Fresh 3.2 ?

Ok Im all backed up and ready to give it a go. I just have a few questions.
I don't use the Sense Launcher and have almost nothing on my home screens. just the scrolling dock at the bottom. launcher pro.
What are some things I am going to lose?
What is the differences in the Camera? Details?
What are the differences in the Dialer?
I like the dialer on Fresh 3.2 because of the FB integration.
I don't use 4G
I have not used HDMI as my flatscreen has a CPU connected already.
Is it possible to have the gallery from 3.2 with the FB pictures tab? or is that a sense thing?
Basically I don't know what all is strictly sense.
the default aosp dialer has what i consider to be a fault. you can't just spell out the name of contact. so i started using DialerOne.
dont' forget to check out both CM6 related threads (both are a bit quiet, but will answer many of the questions you may cross...search is your friend)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=735596
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729802
not sure on the FB stuff since I don't use it except to fill in the pics in my contact list.
give it a whirl. it will be a bit different.
enjoy.
Thanks Draginmagik (sportbike rider?) I had already thought out what I wanted to ask while at work and only had time to ask while on lunch. Figured Id get some input from some people who had used both but your input is appreciated to. I forgot about dialer one. That is one of my favorite things about the dialer I have. I tried Dialer One on The moment but couldn't get it to come up with the green button. I guess thats not a problem with the evo.
A few things ive noticed in Fresh 3.2 Vs Cyanogen mod is that...
Fresh's battery life (by itself, no kernal flashed) is by far the best of any of the ROMS ive used.
I like the sense camera sooooooo much more than the default android camera so thats a no brainer for me.
I do like the AOSP call history though, its much easier to navigate to and through.
Overall, im running Cyanogen right now but ill probably go back to Fresh later tonight... the battery difference is amazing.
Reading a little more I don't see where Sprint vvm / weird text message is there or not. I hated that on the Hero AOSP roms. Also want to get opinions on GPS as i need it to work at the end of this week. I will be flashing this tonight, just want to get some feedback so dont need the "just try it" post. Again, Im just trying to get a comparison so I know what to look for faster after I flash to be sure I like it before I head home this weekend. Once I get on the road and get back home, phone playtime is over until I get caught up at home . hahaha.

Have you tried Kings ASOP kernrel? Im using #3 BFS and its great if I dont use the phone but it seems to suck down pretty quick when the phone wakes up. I'm over the battery thing, I just started carrying my usb cable in my back pocket and hit up a usb plug when I see one. lol But thanks for the info. Ill keep an eye on that too.

Can you explain the difference? I just figured out on the Fresh camera that if you touch the screen it focuses on that spot. Awesome feature. Wish my real camera did that.

not sure how the stock CM6 kernel is. a few days ago the CM6 nightly was upped to the .34 kernel. the custom ROM's are mostly on the .32 kernel still. i ran Kings on CM and it was 'ok'. the UI was smooth but the battery life reminded me of my previous stock kernels. perhaps as he rolls out more kernels that will be adjusted.
Cyanogen wrote the camera app in CM6. it also has the point touch focus. it has been much improved from the default aosp camera.

All nanded up and flashed and restored most of my apps. Pandora sounds great. Ill test it in the shop but in the hotel its loud! I didn't Know that was a feature.
I liked the look of the dialer until the phone rang. YUK!
Im trying to finish up my Manup them but not sure if the ZIP I already have for the notification bar will work with CM6
The camera work good so far, as long as the pictures take good im OK with that. I hate 3d gallery, always have. its on my list of things to fix.
I downloaded the one in the link. Your on nightlys right? do they seem stable enough for you? whats the best way to try those out? The github link is kinda over my head.

Cant forget having the ability to zoom while recording video. That's one of the big pluses of CM.
Well I found that the stock notification bar zip that I had on file won't work. I got the little blue android of death. After a quick reflash of cm6 all is well. still need that manup theme.
i'm on the 9/15 nightly. i think it was the 'swipe away items from the notification bar' feature or maybe a camera update that got me to flash up from the CM6final.
running it with -snap 7.6bfs kernel
currently, the CM6nightlys have slowed down so you just kinda keep an eye on the thread for nifty new features or updates...other than that, it's been very very stable for me since well before CM6final was released.

Sense Roms?

Hello everyone, I am currently running Sense 3.5 Energy and have been trying to find a good sense Rom the suits me. I just cannot seem to get one that doesn't have noticeable glitches.
With the Energy Sense 3.5 Rom I am having some trouble with a couple of things showing up.
*For example, when I try and select a "scene", "skin", "wallpaper", "Lock screen style" via the Personalize section, they are all just grey tabs and show no preview.
I find this Sense Rom to be the best one on my phone.
The other Sense Rom's do the same exact thing.
My other question is for the ICS Rom's. I love the overall feel of them and they are excellent but I am also having some noticeable issues.
*One issue I would like to address is when I turn the screen off from the on state, it will transition off, flicker on then off. It's basically a hit an miss, sometimes does it and sometimes doesn't, mostly it does. Same thing on ICS as to the Scene, skins, wallpapers, lock screen previews.
I have looked in many thread comments and haven't seen anyone really comment on any of these things, unless I am overlooking them. So here I am!
Appreciate all the help I can get, 2nd post! W00T!
Thanks, -Nic

The gray tab / hidden preview is a known issue with newer Sense ROMs. What to do is whenever you are in Personalize - Skins it whatever, hit the menu button and use Grid view.
The ICS screen-on thing, it happens sometimes. Not sure why, but it does. Plagues me on GB too. Annoying, yes, but I tap my power button 3 times fast to make sure it doesn't happen. Try using SetCPU or an alternative and raising barely the minimum value /screen off value.

For the ICS, I personally wouldn't recommend using setcpu, because it'll compete with the tiamat havs kernel and can cause issues. You can try downloading rom toolbox from the market [free] and use it to change the governor.
Most stable sense roms, in my opinion, are mikg or classic.

Problem with those, IMO, is they're TOO stock. I need some flashiness to my ROM

Alright I will rom the ICS in a couple of minutes because I would rather run them. Not exactly sure how to just raise a particular setting. I'll probably be able to figure it out though ha! Curious as to know which ICS you would run? Jared's or kushdeck's?

Both of those roms have very active themers who have done incredible jobs making them non stock. See wired theme for mikg or evolvedclassic and supreme cream for classic. Just sayin....

touchwiz micro stutters

Hi guys I got my Rogers Galaxy S3 2 days ago (i747M). For the most part it is buttery smooth. But I notice that sometimes touchwiz has some micro stutters when moving between home screens. I also notice that while switching between home screens, before entering the home screen that has the Gmail widget, theres a quick minor stutter. Can anyone replicate this?
The way I did it was, first use the internet browser for a bit then go back to the home screen. After start moving between home screens and see if you have and stuttering before entering the home screen with the Gmail widget.
Is this a problem with the widget?
Extra information: I am on stock, un-rooted.
This is normal. I also experienced this with stock ROMs. Something that will help mitigate this issue is if you flash a custom ROM that has the scrolling cache disabled (such as Kyan ROM. There are others, but I know this one off the top of my head because I have personally used it). Though they do not go away fully even with the new ROM, the fluidity of the interface if greatly increased.
The only way that I know of to make this go totally away is to flash AOKP or CM10 as they have implemented project butter with great success.

This may be a bit off topic but, I know nightlies for CM10 are out.. But do you think we will get the stable version of it? I notice for CM9 we didn't get the stable version.. That kinda worries me a bit because I like cyanogenmod and the progress they made with CM10.

I wouldn't worry about it. We haven't gotten a stable version of CM9 yet because the Galaxy S3 came out after CM was well into its development cycle. Also, with the release of Jellybean source code, there isn't a huge incentive for the CM team to continue working on getting a "stable" build released (stable is in quotes because a lot of their nightlies are actually pretty stable). I have been running task and ktoonsez's AOKP for a while now and I have to say that their 8/20 version is quite superb. It offers much more customization that CM10 currently has and I would highly recommend it.
Yes I have this issue as well, I also am flashed on KyanRom, there isn't as much stutters, but they still happen here and there, even when I close an application, sometimes my widgets on the page it goes to look as though they've disappeared, but come back. I also experienced this while being unrooted. So far, don't know anything that can fix the issue to the fullest. I think lowering down on the amount of widgets on the home screen can help. But who doesn't love widgets?

Guess will have to wait till Jelly bean comes out. I'm sure project butter will get rid of 99% of lag and stuttering.

Hype, Forget, Stay...

...when it should be something like Hype, Compare, Choose.
I'm just posting this because it's crazy how we become kind of addicts to the cutting edge versions of Android, no matter how it really works on our device, it is just awesome because it works, on our beloved 3 years old nexus.
I'm the kind of guy who really search for smoothness, all around the system. I just can't stand a frame drop. It's kind of creepy. No, seriously, I look for details, and there's some things in KitKat I don't like. But all that said, and as I once read, if your eyes see at 15 fps it's not my fault lol. So, here they are:
- Notifications panel / Quick settings animation. Yes, guess what, the frame drop here is aweful. It stutters like hell. Just do it, expand the status bar and hit the tile many times, that's not smooth at all.
- RAM usage. They can say KK is optimized and bla bla, but real thing is that there's less free RAM than JB. It's a fact. You can go all the way of how Android manage memory and stuff, well, I rather more free RAM.
- Home button responsiveness. It just lags. Test it, open an app, something heavy e.g. Facebook app, and press home button. Now do the same but use back button. Give it a few tries if you didn't notice the difference at the first time.
- High battery drain.
There are some other things but you get the point. I felt less responsiveness in general, when multitasking, etc. So I decided to go back to Android 4.3.1 JB, CM 10.2.1 in my particular case. Oh yes, this feels awesome. Notifications panel / Quick settings animation is fully smooth, I've more free ram, Home button reaction is fast again, multitasking is great. I also realized that I missed the Vanilla ui. This is definitely where I'm staying.
So my conclusion is, you can follow the hype but don't stay just with the new things, make your own judgement, compare and choose what's your most suitable rom/android version out there
NOTES:
- I've been watching a lot of YouTube videos looking for this issues I've mentioned, so I discard problems with my Maguro in particular.
- I'm comparing both Android versions with the same apps (around 140 total apps), so there's no factory reset placebo effect.
- They're all present on different roms i.e CM, PA, and some others, so its KK related I guess.
- A particular thing about CM 10.2.1 is that it cames with a modified phase beam live wallpaper that slows down the launcher/system, don't get wrong this first bad impression , try another live wallpaper and you'll see how smooth is it. It runs great, using live or static wallpapers. What I did was delete the phasebeam.apk and push the stock 4.3 phasebeam.apk, that works good :good:.
- Hey! There's some good KK themes for old Theme Chooser if you want the KK look.
Anyway, here's another reason to not to ask what's the best rom for my GN.
This is just my personal opinion.
Hope you've enjoyed the post, and go try yourself!

I agree with the problems you mentioned and i do want speed, stability and smoothness.
I noticed those things when i first upgraded to KK.
To overcome those challenges, i tried all the roms (CM Remix, Cm11, PA, Omni, Omni FML, geyers, AOKP, etc..) with stock kernels and then with DIRTY V and Fancy.
More ram is available with dirty v, fancy and stock PA kernel.
Afterall, i choose my personal set up which is smooth and stable for my device. i am satisfied with it now.
With Android you always have a choice of tweaking, upgrading or downgrading from JB > KK. so choose whats best for you :good:
Even I've been thinking of try CM 10 for a while but I just can't leave KitKat. For me, latest Android version is important but this lag makes me feel bad. So I try to manage the performance using better kernel and not using apps like Facebook but it isn't enough. There is still lag in some or the other screen.
I bought Galaxy Nexus in last 9 months only so I couldn't use Android 4.3 roms much and thus I don't have much info about them. What do you think, should I give it a try? Also, which rom would you recommend?
Thanks.

As I said, you'll have to try my friend
If you want my opinion, CM 10.2.1 Stable is awesome. Rock solid. You should make a nandroid backup of your current rom and go try some 4.3 stuff! In worst scenario you'll be restoring the nandroid and that's it!

I agree with you on everything you said. I think I even went back to CM 10.X (not sure the exact one), but it was much better than anything I had before. I am on PA 4.44 and my data loses connection often and not sure why. The version of CM though, I would put it on airplane mode and my battery would still be drained the next day when other versions I didn't have that issue. That's one reason I went to another ROM, but it appears I am just going through ROMS like crazy trying to find the one I like most. To me...battery life is the most important.
decisions.
when i stopped using google framework with all those apps you dont have to use...
i found my battery lasting much longer
setting my kernel to lazy...while turning up voltage and over hertz. gives it enough speed...with enough "crash"
to stay up for 3 to 4 days, just sitting there
and 1 to 2 while in normal use.
and using up my data....well no one is going to get much up time like that
