Increase your SGS speed by just changing Settings - Galaxy S I9000 Android Development

Go to Settings > Display > Animation > No animation
I found this tweak at anandtech. My SGS is now flying. It's amazing. Your SGS performance will at least double after setting no animation.
Turning off animation disables the fading effect when opening and closing apps.
Works on all SGS firmwares. It may not work if you are using the default TouchWiz home.
Cheers

To me this only seems to affect the settings windows, doesn't change the app draw fade, or homescreens. What else does it turn off?

WOW! This really does make a huge difference (didn't think it would),
Nice find.

This is true makes most things snappier. The animation reminds me of my old iphone anyway, don't wasn't that now do we! Its enough that samsung copied the design of the enclosure...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

this works great on the interface make it feel really snappy.
It stops the fading effect of moving from one screen to another screen or pop ups. So, now you don't have to wait.

is the graphics driver at fault?
if the animations are not smooth and thats causing the delay, maybe the graphics driver is at fault.

This makes my phone well fast. Running doc's rom and ryan za's lag fix. Thanks man. I like the speed

Perhaps, as overlays/transparencies might not be working as intended, any app that uses any kind of transparency/overlay/fade over TouchWiz seems to go to hell.
To see this, checkout vizBattery, when the screen with the 2 select buttons pops up and its semi transparent if you have a live wallpaper going you can see the frame rate drop to 5 fps.

I still can't see any other windows that this turns effects off for??? What are you all on about
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

It might be faster because it takes less cpu/gpu to use your phone but your cpu/gpu is not always on full charge so I think that it seems faster only because you don't have the animation delay that's all

It's the same as disabling all the fancy FX in win 7 ( or any other OS ), but I like my FX and I'm happy to wait the microsecond or two extra

I have always been bothered with the slow animation on the front screen. It is dead smooth in launcherpro. But disabling the animation do makes for a better experience.
Although zooming and scrolling in the app-drawer is dead slow still.

Is this really a Development section topic....?
This is nothing special or specific to the SGS. Same settings on my EVO 4G and Nexus One exist(ed), and have the same impact on the "feel" of the phone.

If you get Spare Parts you can speed it up, which has the same effect without destroying the prettiness.

Hey, this works really well. And I don't think it destroys the prettiness, windows open too fast for destroying it

These are one of the things I do everytime after flashing a new rom.
1) Disable animation
2) Change the Mobile networks to 'GSM Only' (We have no 3G yet in India on major n/w)
3) Brightness to Zero
4) Haptic Sensitivity to just a bare minimum
5) Date & Time to 12-hour format
6) USB Debugging - Enabled
7) Privacy - Use my Location
8) Wifi-Settings - Disable network notification
9) Disable SD Card notifications
10) Disable Power saving Mode
11) Set the APN & Login to Google!!
I wish there was a way to automate the above steps

What exactly does the powersaving mode do?

You could probably write a script for sl4a that adjusts many of those.

[ADDON PACK][12/18/11] Bulletproof MIUI Pack v1.2 :: OC/Optimized/Extras!

Bulletproof MIUI Addon Pack
Due to a lack of time, I've discontinued weekly updates to Bulletproof MIUI. I didn't want to leave anyone behind, so I believe I've come up with the next-best-solution.
The Bulletproof addon pack is designed to be flashed directly over the weekly translated MIUI builds (e.g. MIUI.us/MIUIandroid.com, etc). The pack will enable all of the features listed below, and should make your phone run significantly better.
The addon pack allows you to update as soon as the translations are available, so you're not stuck waiting on me to update every week! This pack should (in theory) work on pretty much any G2/DZ ROM, but your milage may vary. Please always make a backup before flashing, just in case.
Features
- /system converted to ext4 file system.
- Virtuous OC Daemon (Installing SetCPU or CPU Tuner will automatically disable the daemon.)
- Tsubus' ILWT kernel
- EFS wiped on flash to prevent GPS issues.
- Wifi Calling conditionally installed for T-Mobile US users, uninstalled otherwise.
- Modified SD card read cache (set to 4096)
- Applications Zipaligned on boot (skipped if already ZA'd)
- App Widget Picker added for users who prefer to use alternative launchers.
- CyanogenMod/Galaxy Nexus ringtones/notification/alarm tones
- OC/UV Beater bundled to control/configure OC
- Themed keyboard that's much more MIUI-like
Installation Instructions:
- Install the MIUI ROM of your choice (MIUI.us/MIUIAndroid.com recommended)
- Flash the Addon pack
- Configure OC settings via the OC/UV Beater application
Whenever you update your MIUI each week (either via OTA or by manually downloading/flashing), simply flash the pack afterwards and you're all set!

Changelog
v1.2
Code:
- Temporarily removing battery calibration scripts (causing some users to get stuck at HTC splash) (thanks for the tip eFFeRaTuM)
- Updated several other scripts, permissions
- ILWT kernel is now bundled in the pack.
Older (unsupported) releases can be found here.
MIUI Resources and Addons
1. Long press on the icon in Toggles to launch the settings for that icon.
When you pull down the notification bar, you will see the Toggle settings for plenty of options (such as WIFI, volume, backlight etc). Long press on any icon in the Toggle mode will launch the setting for that icon.
2. Built-in Screen Capture function
One of the lacking feature in Android is the lack of a built-in screen capture feature (like in iPhone). Not anymore. With MIUI, you can press the “Menu” key and “Volume Down” key at the same time to capture a screenshot. The printed image is saved in the “MIUI: directory in the sd card.
3. Press Home key to preview screens
Pressing the Home button once will bring you back to the Home screen. Pressing the Home button button will show you all the screen thumbnails. You can also ad/remove screens from here.
4. Slide from left to right to quickly delete a message or a call log.
In the SMS or Dialer app, swipe left or right any entry will bring up the Delete mode.
5. Move home screen icon easily
Hold down an icon by one hand to enter Edit Mode, and then use the other hand to slide the screen to move the icon to the target screen.
6. Launch Music Player in lockscreen
In the lockscreen, double tap the time zone to launch the Music Player. (The Music Player is hidden by default, unless a song is playing)
7. Quickly access the Dialer or SMS from the lockscreen
In the lockscreen, hold down the icon of Call or SMS, and you can enter the responding program.
8. Activate the torch from the lockscreen
In the lockscreen, hold down the Home button to enable the torch.
9. Access shortcut menu from contact image
In the Calls, SMS or Contacts app, tap the contact image and a shortcut menus will appear.
10. Search via voice recognition
Long press on the Search button will launch search via voice recognition.
11. Switch the Battery UI to show percentage
The default battery UI can be switched to display percentage of left battery capacity. To do so, go to “Settings -> System -> Battery Settings -> Battery Indicator Style -> Percentage“.
12. Long press on the Home button to show History
Like any other Android ROM, long press on the Home button will show the recently used apps. However, in MIUI, there is also an App Killer and App Manager button. Swiping the popup left will show the search form.
13. Setting up IP dialing
If you need to add an IP prefix for a particular number in a strange land, you can set it in Settings -> Common -> Calls Settings. Turn the “Auto IP dialing” ON and set the IP prefix and current area code.
14. Send SMS for rejected calls
When you are not available to answer the phone, you may slide up the panel to reject the call and to send a message to the caller at the same time.
15. Enable 720P to record a video
If your phone comes with a camera that support HD recording, you can enable 720P in the Video mode. Run the Camera app and switch to Video. Select “High” -> “720P” in the pop-up menu of video quality.
16. Quickly uninstall an app
To uninstall an app, simply press and hold the icon until the trash bin show up at the top of the screen. Move the icon to the trash bin to uninstall the app.
17. Quickly read SMS and mark it read
In the lockscreen, press down the SMS button (without dragging it down) to reveal the new incoming message on the lockscreen. Once you have finished reading it, double tap on the SMS button to mark it read.
18. Making the MIUI launcher smoother
On first boot on a fresh install, go into Launcher Settings, and toggle hi-res graphics on, then back off again (If you intend on using the stock MIUI Launcher, this seems to smooth it out significantly)
19. Brightness slider on notification pulldown
Disable auto brightness and you'll get a brightness slider in the notification toggle pulldown.
20. Built in FTP server
MIUI has a built-in FTP file server. To use it, open the File Manager application, and tap on the "FTP" tab.
BONUS: MIUI is pronounced "ME YOU EYE", but say it however you want

Whats better abouth the virtous controller compared to setcpu?
Cheers keep up the good work tho!!

The overclock daemon wasn't intended to work with the smartass governor. The daemon uses screen off profiles which makes the smart ass governor useless. Switch back to the on demand governor or the per shoot kernel and things will probably work better

first thing i notice is that scrolling through the homescreens is smooth as butter! wow.
im going to try this one for some time, see if it becomes my new favourite!
Just wondering is the kernel important to work with the daemon or does the governor just need to be set to on demand and it works with any miui compatible kernel?
so could i use tiamat or streamline5 with this kernel then? (sorry i know jsut the concept behind daemon but not the specifics like this)
The force closes of the controller are due to the frequencies in the scripts that are default not being supported by the kernel. If you want to use a different kernel change the frequency in the script then everything will work as expected.

Minor things about 4.3

While the majority of this update brings smoothness and (possibly) better battery life for all, there are a few things that can make life more difficult for the power user. Here I'll list what I found, and I'll try to add people's replies as they come in.
Superuser is kinda broken
None of the 4.3 superuser hacks have been 100% successful, many parts don't work. For example, restoring apps with TB or RTP result in only the apps being restored, but data is left behind. Tested with Chainfire's SuperSU for the S4 (which also works on any AOSP 4.3 ROM)
Secure Settings Helper can't toggle airplane mode anymore
This one is particularly bad for Tasker users, as many of their profiles that depend on Secure Settings toggling airplane mode for them will now have to do it by hand until someone finds a new way.
USB OTG slightly broken
Mounting with StickMount on my Galaxy Nexus is fine, but after unmounting, sdcard disappears and shows content from root directory. Sure, everything is safe and sound in /data/media, the mount points just get a little messed up. Perhaps this is due with the root issue?
Slight stutters
Slight stutters have been noticed in the following areas: when pressing the recent apps button, switching from notification to quick settings, and CRT off. I don't get these often except for the recent apps, which seems to be persistent. All the others, at least for me, come and go.
Feel free to post whatever thing you notice in 4.3 that seems off!

CRT animation
The CRT animation when you turn off the screen of the device is still laggy like in 4.2
Quick-settings panel
The animation that make appears the quick-settings panel is not always "60fps smooth" like in 4.1/4.2.
Nav-bar buttons animation
The "glow" animation of the virtual button is not smooth (mostly on the multitasking button, when you are in the home screen)
"App"
"Applications" is now replaced from "App" everywhere in the phone (Settings, multitasking screen if empty). Just REALLY ugly.

its really hard to notice for me if there is any difference between the first time and the rest...seems like the same, only difference is when there's a notification.
Another minor lag: Google Now
If I press and hold home button, the Google 'circle' shows up normally, but if I do it swiping the finger from the bottom instead of pressing and holding home, the Google 'circle' animation showing up is laggy.
Mostly importat to see if they fixed the problem with eMMC speed.

Android 4.3 laggy

Has anyone noticed that the official Android 4.3 update is laggy as hell?
Like swyping through homescreens has lag even in the settings app it lags like crazy when scrolling and tapping on things

My SD card was the issue somehow. It was a generic one I replaced it with a real samsung one and its good now
My battery drain was also being caused by the SD card via media server trying to access it

This section might be hidden on some phones, but it’s very easy to access. On many phones, you just have to open a certain page in the settings and tap a button seven times. Use Google to figure out how to enable Developer options on your phone if it’s currently hidden (for example, search “enable developer options HTC One”).
Once you have access to Developer options, simply scroll until you find the following three settings, which may be located on the main screen or within an “Advanced” subsection:
Window animation scale
Transition animation scale
Animator animation scale
Tapping each of the three aforementioned settings will reveal that it’s set to “1x” by default. If you want to speed up your phone or tablet dramatically, simply change each of those three settings to “.5x” — that’s it.
Just to clarify, this doesnt actually speed up performance afaik. But it does make the device seem a bit snappier as it speeds up transitions.
It used to make more of a difference than it does now though. I think it was set to 1.5x or 3x in previous versions, so the change made more of a noticeable difference.

Keep open in background

Is there a way to have this support more than 3 apps? It's ridiculous there's a limit with the amount of ram on this phone
That's a GREAT question, and I'd love to know the answer too. I haven't found one yet though. RAM isn't an issue on this phone. Maybe they worry too many locked in memory will affect battery life too much?
Where did you learn this is the limit? I've gone days without opening an app before and when I go back to it it's right where I left off.
You could perhaps go to the battery saving menu and disable the battery saving for any apps you want to remain running. This may cause some serious background battery usage though, but It may be worth trying out. Also, try running the high performance mode. I've run that mode a lot and never noticed it causing much battery drain over the standard optimised mode.
Coming from Oneplus and using it for a long time I can tell you, the Note 10+ is probably one of the best multitasking phones I've used (including Note 9). Chrome on this hardly ever closes in the background and find it always running and available with all the tabs open. Oneplus phones can hardly keep anything in memory / background loaded for more than 5 mins but but Oneplus phones feel sooooo much more responsive and snappy comparatively otherwise.
The default for background apps is set to, "standard." Which allows more than 3 background apps.
Go into Device Care - > Battery - > App power management
Some apps may have been automatically added to sleep or deep sleep.
You can add or remove apps as needed.

After you add three to "Keep open for quick launching" the option becomes greyed out.
You're right, it's generally not an issue where apps get closed down in the background anyway, but I normally have 4 or 5 that I always wanted 'pinned' to my recents list. Not a big deal, I just found the limit strange, given the phone's capabiities and hardware.

How do you get " keep open for quick launching “ , I only get lock app instead , I'm running one ui 2.1 june security patch ” picture attached ”
Anyway you can bypass this using good lock app from galaxy store and use the module multistar and toggle on ”long live apps”

I'm also on One UI 2.1, June security patch. Screenshot of my menu option is attached. Maybe it's different between countries/regions/models? Mine is the Canadian N975W.
Edit: attachments aren't working, here's a link to the screenshot: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AqdgaMVMg2EMirgLXMqey1V1d0Gsdg?e=RGdVeX
I have three settings :
Put apps to sleep
Put apps to deep sleep
Apps that are not put to sleep.
I can add as many as i want in here.
There's an option to Goodlock's Task Changer to keep an app open which is a setting you don't have anywhere else in the system.
But i don't have that long live app in Multistar on my end.
Sorry for digging this up but do all of your apps appear in the "Apps that never sleep" list of apps?
I'm missing quite a few of my apps, aProfiles and Philips Hue for a start...
Anyone has noticed that before? Thnx

Question Animation speed

I like to keep things snappy and always set all of the three animation settings to 0,5 from developer settings.I see that the animation speed is resetting to default after a while, then you have to change it back and forth to make it fast(0,5) again... Anyone else?
0,5 works for me fine.
The settings should not change by itself.
That said, why do you need to change these Settings in modern phones? They are too fast already, and animations actually look good.

Yes, but when you are used to the fast animation speeds and snappiness for many years, the normal animation speed looks and feels sooooo slooooww.
The actual setting keeps the same and won't change, but the animation becomes slower. When I tick the animation to anything else and back to 0,5 it is fast again... I notice it when pull down the notification menu.
Maybe a factory reset will fix it.

I too was using 0.5x. Then I asked the same question to myself and switched to default 1x. I'm now used to this default setting and it is quite good.
I've set it to 0.25 via SetEdit. jOnePlus Tools unfortunately can't be installed.
And I also have a feeling this setting doesn't survive long enough.

They are not, difference between 1.0 and 0.5 is a night and day.
Just going into developer menu and going back and seeing the sliding animation duration on 1.0 and on 0.5 feels like it is just slow on default settings.
As always, it is a matter of personal preference.

That was a setting to make your phone feel faster, snappier. Today's phones aren't slow or laggy like before. And the animations look good at the default setting.

No, this was and is setting to adjust various animations durations as per description.
The result is quicker, snappier or slower, more fluent feel in corelation to settings applied but as you point yourself, not for everyone this option is needed.
For you its quick, for me the default animation length is slow and I prefer 0,5 multiplier.
And for everyone else it is a personal choice whichever option suits them best.

I agree. Although I prefer 0.3x multiplier. 1x makes me impatient, particularly managing the notification tray when in a hurry.
Bro I also faced this issue a few weeks ago, no one faced this issue similar to me. Animations were getting reset to 1x after a while. I accidentally noticed - if pocket detection is enabled, and you try to unlock device with upper portion of the phone covered, you get "pocket detection" warning. That's when animations get reset, at least for me that was the trigger point. Check if you have the similar issue and disable pocket detection

Thank you!
Thanks, i had exactly the same issue and its fixed now
I have the pocket detection enabled with 0.3x animations functioning even after reboots. Maybe something is going on with some of your software, guys.
