3G usage per app - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use 3g watchdog to keep a track of my internet usage. Lately I have notice the amount of.requests to internet increased but I don't know.why. is there any app that will show me how much traffic each app used?
This will alien me.to check witch apps are requiring more.usage and when.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

I know a way to check the amount of time an app uses your network (not the traffic itself) EDIT: you can also see the amount of bytes sent and received if you select the app in the list.
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Go to "battery history"
select "network usage"
I'm not sure if those are the exact words in an English menu. My phone is Dutch. I have no idea how it looks in Portuguese.

There is an app DataStats but it drains your CPU and battery.
If I was you install it, run for a few hours, identify if any apps you have installed are really draining your data (remove them if they are I found a couple of really bad ones) then uninstall the app again.

Whats using data?

Hi Folks,
Just checking my data balance with my operator.. and its showing i am using on average 12 megs per day... seems a little high as i'm on wi-fi at home..
does synching with yahoo mail eat a lot of data? i sync news reader subs on the wifi ini the morning.. and only use browsing a little on the phone.. nothing major..
does google maps use a lot of data?
Just seem a little high.. my current data plan offer 250 megs a month.. so might be a little low!
Cheers,
Mick
Ive noticed this as well. I think it has something to do with google maps. According to my data usage program I have uploaded 15mb and downloaded 5mb today. What on earth is doing all the uploading and why?
i assume this is because of the my location service
if you have this enabled you agree that the service can withdraw these details at any time during the day.
try disabling the my location service from the settings menu and try again.
especially if you have gps disabled in which case it will find your location based on your GSM which will use your phone's connection?
again it's just a theory but this definitely applied to my hD2
Its a shame nobody has written an app to show data usage per application. I`ve searched and found nothing
when you say "a little bit of browsing". it won't take many pages to add up to 12mb these days. on graphics heavy, or just badly made websites this could easily be as few as 10 pages!

Google maps only stores a limited amount of the map to it's cache and all the rest it pulls from your data bundle to update what you see on your screen. There are a few apps available with the maps downloadable to your SD card. These apps will remove the need for maps to cache if you use it.
I'm having a problem with something using data on my phone. I have the data counter widget and if I havent used wifi or 3g all day then turn one of them on it shows me as downloaded around 20kb. I disabled auto update on the weather and the set the download frequency in the mail app to manual. Can't think of anything else. Anyone got other suggestions?
Bet you've got Latitude enabled.
Whats latitude and how do you disable it?
The part of Maps that tells you where your buddies are and your buddies where you are.
If you don't know what it is, it's probably not enabled.
Open Maps, press menu and tap Latitude, menu again then privacy settings. You disable it there.

Try 'Spare Parts'. Whilst its doesn't exactly show this you can see Network usage under the battery section. It's by application but am not sure if its really network usage or just battery usage by network functions.
I would also be interested in such application. On my WinMo device I used SPB wireless monitor, which did the job very well.
I am using around 1MB of data per day (gmail-only emails-sync, weather sync 3 hours), but even if I disable everything, there are still some data transfers. This could be a problem when abroad...

This is freaking me out. I'm on Wi-fi practically all the time and have still used 80mb in three days!
My frequencies in terms of auto updates for Facebook etc are the same as on my previous hd2 but it didn't chew up anywhere like this amount.
Any ideas? Is it really Google location?
I can't believe that there hasn't been more talk about this. I have a corporate limit of 500mb per month.

same here.. i switched tariffs yesterday to get a 1gb monthly limit..
you can turn off internet connection via mobile networks.. might be worth trying to save data.. also i'm using the opera web browser as it uses a lot less data.. also turn off background sync altogether.. wont stop your emails etc....

If the phone goes into standby, by default it turns off WiFi and switches to cellular data. It's in the setup Wireless menus, there's options on when to do this, including never which means all network connectivity will cease when the phone is in standby, so no push email etc.
no, never means that the wifi never turns off and it will continue to use wifi when in standby.
however, if you have it set to 15 minutes, then yes the wifi will turn off and go back to cellular data.

I'd install 3gwatchdog (which monitors your data usage, excluding wifi), and then start quitting apps, making whatever changes you want to try and see what's causing it.
Thanks guys, I already had Wi-fi sleep set to 'never'.
Ok today I have no Wi-fi and up to 1600 I have used over 30mb.
These are the apps I believe are drawing data down (28mb is data in).
BBC headlines widget, set to 2hrs
Guardian app, only downloads on Wi-fi
Facebook 2 hrs
Twitter 2 hrs
Google location - allow wireless location
Email for both corporate and hotmail accounts.
I can't think of anything else. This is all consistent with my hd2 but it was using far less. I can't believe there isn't an app that can slice it by app.

By default, data when roaming is disabled so this should not be an issue unless you are like me where I am roaming from the second I walk out of the office door so need to have this enabled. I must remember to turn this off when I get on a plane

[Q] Amount of data transfered with mobile internet

Is there somehting included on the DHD or any known app, that can tell me how much data I have transfered over my mobile internet connection?
YES - it does sound like a topic that should be interesting to a lot of people and discussed multiple times already. Unfortunately, I haven't found the answer through searching. So maybe, you can just point me to the right keywords?
thanks
-Markus
Just search the market for usage monitors.
Like PhoneUsage or 3G watchdog.
Give NetCounter a shot, I've used it since owning a Hero. It has all the features you'd expect, and its free.
Agreed. I used NetCounter on my Hero, and use it on my DHD.
Gives you usage, billing months, alarms.
Ace.
thanks guys. NetCounter is really cool
Hopefully, those non informative posts are not against forum policy.
EDITED: My Bad
If you also need a system diagnostics widget with info about CPU, memory, battery usage and so on I recommend Elixir.
It shows mobile/wifi traffic amongst a lot of other stuff like switches for airplane mode etc. and the widgets are highly configurable.
I use Data counter widget and I'm very happy with it. It allows me to track mobile and WiFi data separately and has a lot of useful statistics.

3g watchdog does the job for me... i can also set it to give me an alarm after a specific amount of usage and turn off mobile internet connectivity after it reaches specific usage!

#932# doesn't match up with my-tmobile

I'm trying to check to see if the APN workaround to bypass throttling with my 2GB unlimited data plan, but when I call #932# to check my data usage, I get a different amount of usage than the usage shown on my my-tmobile page.
On my my-tmobile, I have ~30mb used, whereas when I use #932#, it shows around ~130mb. The 130mb is closer to my "true" usage (the actual amount while using the modified APN). I don't know if the trick is working for me or not. Can someone explain to me why the two measurements don't match up?
Thank you for your time.
Possibly lag between the network and the my-Tmobile Web page.
You can download Traffic Monitor from the market and it will give you fairly accurate data usage numbers. You can even monitor what uses data and how much. Set it up so it resets on the same day as your Billing cycle.

I'm using a data manager that I downloaded from the market. It matches up with the #932# data. The problem is, it's been like this for a couple days, so the possibility that it is simply lagging is becoming less and less plausible..
I think the apn trick doesn't show up the website.
Not too sure though.
That could be true, but why would it be monitored via #932#? I really don't know if the APN trick is working for me or not

[How to] stop high battery drain and high data usage.

So, some may have noticed two things about your phones; 1) You have 'Android OS' using high amounts of your data as well as your battery. 2) General day to day use drains your battery very quickly. So what are you to do?
First lets address our day to day use of our phone.
Start by getting an app like Brightness Level. I use this app to keep my phones screen at 0 during the night and 25% during the day when the sun glare makes it hard to read.
Now we move into the data usage from apps and wakelock issues. This can usually occur from apps such as facebook looking to update while your phone is in your pocket. This uses data as well as wakes your phone up causing it to use more battery then if it were asleep. For this problem I recommend Juice Defender Ultimate, now you can get the free version but you wont have access to all the next steps but you will still see results.
Firstly, JD will refer to JuiceDefender
1) You will need JD anything above the free version (Google it)
2) Open JD and go to the "Status" Tab at the top
3) Enable
4) For "Profile" Choose Customize
5) A "Settings" Tab should Appear at the top, if not, close JD and re-open it.
6) Mobile Data can be Enabled or Disabled here as well as WiFi and Location
a) Turn them on and off for what you want, if you want Mobile Data and Wifi to turn on and off on specific apps you can just leave them Enabled.
b) "Schedule" Turning this on will turn on your data every 5m(minutes), 15m, 30m, 1h(hour) or 2h so it can push email and other apps you have set to use data.
c) "Night" this you can use to turn off data while you sleep and for how long you want it off
d) "Apps" You can enable this setting to pick apps that are allowed to use data or turn it off to let them run as they usually do.
e) "Interactive" will pop up a window while JD is in the background and you can pick what JD allows the app to do (will go over more of that soon.)
f) "Configure Apps" We will open this to turn app data on/off on when you have it open, on all the time.
1a) Tap "Configure Apps"
a) "Internet Apps" Apps that use the internet
b) "Configured Apps" These apps are configured by you already.
c) "All Other Apps" These apps usually do not need the internet so they do not need to be configured.
2a) Move to any App under "Internet Apps" and tap it
3a) What do the taps mean?
a) "Enable" This app is enabled, when it needs data it will only use data when you have the app opened.
b) "Enable/Screen off" This app is on and using data while the screen is off and or while the app is opened.
c) "Disabled" This app will never use data
d) "Do Nothing" The app will use data when it needs it, JD won't bother its operation.
4a) Examples
a) "Pandora" I have this app set to Enable/screen off so while I have the app running in the background it will still use data, or while the screen is off it will use data.
b) "Ebay" This app is Enabled, when I open the app and I am looking at it it will use data, but if I hit the home button it stops using data, wont use data while screen is off.
c) "AccuWeather" Disabled, this app will only use data when my Schedule turns data on for ALL items on my phone every 2 hours, it will then update anything it needs to then end data usage for two more hours.
d) "Root Browser Lite" Do nothing, This app will use data whenever it wants regardless of JD rules unless data is disabled.
Lastly, what about that pesky "Android OS" ? While people speculate what "Android OS" actually entails we will just go with what stops its killer data and battery drain.
Open up Play Store then hit your settings button, Check update over wifi only, This way we don't have apps updating all the time using a lot of data, this isn't a big necessity to do this but I do it just to be on the safe side.
Now close Play Store and go to Settings> Data Usage then hit your settings button on your phone, Check Restrict Background Data.
If you look at the Android OS in your data usage chart you will see almost all of its activity happens in the background. Restricting Background Data limits its ability to use up all your data. From doing this, last month my Android OS used 286MB in just 5 days, now it used only 80mb in 5 days. From December 5th to January 5th it used a total of 2.34 gigabytes of my data alone. This is my MAIN data culprit and the bane of multiple peoples limited data.
You may also want to go to Settings> Backup & Reset and uncheck Backup my data, Some speculate this also leads to android OS using a lot of your data.
So these are just a few things I found as I googled and searched the forums and the internet to help me save battery life, not meant to be a huge in-depth top of the line guide, more of just a general education plan. Good luck all with your battery saving en-devours, and of course if you have anything you do to save a little juice or kill that pesky Android OS bug let us all know.
Edit #1- (Some info on Android OS bug and Gapps) [Source- http://mobility.forumsee.com/a/m/s/p12-9475-0182175--android-enormous-data-usage.html]
"The Android OS drain is a bug. That is why Google is about to push a patch 4.2.2.However, if your having Android System drain, make sure you've opened all the following apps at least one time so they can sign in, regardless if you use them or not. As these are system apps, they will keep sys running until you sign in.

Hmm, I've tried juice defender many tines, and I find it affects my data connection, when I wake the phone to use it, and then go straight to browser, it takes ages to load pages.

"OS Services" hogging up data

Hi,
Im using - Jelly Bean AOKP by vijendra (4.1.2) on my Desire. To keep a close watch on the data usage, I installed an app - "My Data Manager".
I've been tracking my usage since Jan 1, and I'm surprised to see "OS Services" use 410 MB (40%) of data!! Something has to be wrong here. People are saying that we should try disabling Sync! But that will sort of defeat my purposes of keeping a smartphone. I also checked under Settings > Data usage: It says "Google Services" used 74.22 MB in the same period, all of which in the background.
I've disabled my Backup (under Settings) and also turned off Browser Sync (as recommended by some) with no luck. Can this be a ROM issue? It certainly can not be normal for an Android phone to hog up so much data!
Looking for some help or answers!
Thanks guys!
Hey! Im having the same problem!!!
Not only it abuses data but it drains down the battery too
