TalkTalk With HTC Desire. - Desire General

Just moved into a new house that currently has TalkTalk and as I am renting a room... I am trying to connect to the internet from my HTC Desire, but when I input the WEP Key, which I believe to be correct. All I get is "Obtaining IP Address from talktalkf88d3" i.e. the router name, then nothing...
As I am a bit of a noob with networking/wireless etc... I haven't a clue what to do.
There are currently 2 devices running off wifi (1 PC and I Laptop) & when it says enter WEP Kay, there are also options "Key Index - 1 to 4"..
Can anybody help me out or provide links that show me step by step what I need to do to get my Desire back online .

hi
my Mrs has talktalk, the router thats white that looks like a photo frame, THE FIRST thing i did was change the security to WPA2 or however it looks like in the router admin. i never tried to join the network when it was on its default WEP, as thats such a insecure security type.
change it to WPA2 (or what its called on the router) then re add. you will find it works as it does for me on my vodafone FroYo desire.

All I get is "Obtaining IP Address from talktalkf88d3" i.e. the router name, then nothing...

i have had this a few time, with me its been when typing the wep key in incorrecty, i have been mistaking the o for a zero and vice versa, it just keeps saying obtaing ip address then it says limited or no connectivity, so after a few attempts i get it right and connects.
Hope this helps

I work for and have Talktalk at home. Try moving nearer to the router as you may have signal issues. Also try wpa2 as that works fine for me.

try knowing what the key is first... and where the router is..

If its a Talktalk router the key is usually on the back of the router on a label with the network name unless it has been changed obviously

DLink-655 EVO problems

I am having problems connecting to my home network with the EVO. I have a DLink-655 router with WPA2 encryption. I went in and looked at the network key which is a ton of characters. I put that key into my phone and it tells me its unable to connect to the network. If I turn my encryption off, it connects to the phone just fine. It is also set to mixed for B, G, and N. Can someone please help me out.

Set it yo WPA2-Personal and make your own passkey. i have the same router and have no problems with it set up that way.
It is on WPA2 Personal. Is your key like 50 characters long that you have to input into the phone?

this def should be in the questions board ...
with wpa2 personal YOU set what YOU want the password to be.
it can be 50 characters or it can be 5 ... up to you cuz you're the network administrator! good luck Mr. Network Administrator!
Ok I figured it out. The one that was generated for me was 54 characters long and I know I put it in the phone correctly. I just did what you suggested and create my own key that's around 23 characters long. Hope that is secure enough.

of the router or of my phone or both ?
On the router.
Use the WiFi analyzer app from the market to find an empty piece of the spectrum.
Login to the control panel of your router and change to that channel.
Your wifi devices will drop, then re-establish a connection automatically with the router.
Configure your router to use whatever version of WPA or WPA2 you prefer, don't bother with WEP.
Then, set your WiFi sleep policy on the phone to 'never,' by pressing the menu button in the WiFi settings screen and touching 'advanced'.
If this still doesn't work, try re-flashing your radio or just move to a different ROM. If you get the same problem on different ROMs, consider that the phone may have developed a fault, and get it repaired or replaced under warranty. Good luck dealing with HTC though, they are a PITA to deal with.

[Q] Wifi keeps getting stuck on "authenticating"

Pretty much every time I try to connect to my home wifi, it keeps getting stuck on authenticating then it will fail and do it over again and again until it says network disabled, poor connection, even though it has a full 4 bars... I've tried turning it off and back on, I've tried forgetting it and redoing it, I've tried restarting the phone.. The only thing that seems to work is for me to unplug my router and plug it back in while leaving the wifi on my phone on. When the router boots back up, then my phone will connect. I would say it's something wrong with my router, but my other phone has absolutely no problem connecting.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Edit: Oh yeah, the phone WILL connect if I turn the password off on my router. I am 100% sure I'm putting the correct password in on my phone, I've checked it numerous times, plus as I said, the phone will connect if I reboot the router every single time I want to connect, so the password is definitely correct.

Originally I was using the stock ROM on 4.0.4, now I'm using the most current CM9 nightly. Have the same problem on both ROMs.
Found a solution, set up my router so that the security is disabled, but so that only the mac addresses I allow can get through. Works perfect and no loss of security.

One could easily listen on your network to scrape your MAC address, and then spoof it. I suppose one could brute-force WPA encryption too, but it's much harder.
You can always just set a static ip. Tap and hold the wifi network and tap advanced and change dhcp to static and go on your pc and find your ip by launching cmd and enter ipconfig. Then enter the info cmd gives you onto your phone but to avoid ip conflicts just change the end of the ip address to something else like 84 no devices usually use that.
Ive seen that issue attempting to connect to my own wifi a couple of times, and in every case it was caused by the wrong PW. I would reset the PW on your router so you know exactly what it is. they are case-sensitive so it could be that you mistyped a letter or two on either the router or your phone. you should also be able to connect using WDS iirc, assuming the router supports it (most newer routers do)

[Expert advice needed] [HELP Reqd] Wifi connecting but not working...why?

I updated my HOX to ViperX JB with hBoot 1.31.
But now, it connects to WiFi router but the internet doesnt work. It works sometimes, else the internet is not working. I tried on another router at a different place, but it is not working. Also i updated hBoot to official 1.39 also, but the problem persists. Restarting the router several times and clean install of the rom didnt help. The boot.img is also from the same rom and all else works fine . What could be the problem? please someone guide me.
After a few posts down, there is another person with same issue.....

i have had similar issues since moving to official JB and HTC aren't that helpful, just say must factory reset the device and see what happens - have now installed viper 3.3.1 and get the same problem - never had the problem when i was on ics - get full signal - and using wifi analyser also shows full - tried on 2.4ghz and 5ghz - it just wants to stop transferring data - if i disable wifi and reset it then it works fine for a while before no data transfer again
i've even re-configured one of my access points with a different name and set the phone to auto-switch to strongest signal, but that don't work either

i'm still in discussion with HTC on this - i purchased my phone in May 2012 and it wasn't until late June that HTC acknowledged the problem
Some routers will give you a bit of **** when trying to connect to them, had a similar issue when trying to connect to my Belkin N at home and fixed by:
1.Open command prompt on your notebook that is connected to your wireless network and type "ipconfig/all"
2.Make a note of your Default Gateway ie 192.xxx,.x.x
3. On your HOX whilst connected to your wireless network go into settings press on wifi.
3.Long press on your wireless network name.
4.select modify network and select "show advanced options"
5.Make sure "none" is selected in proxy settings.
6.Make sure "static" is selected in ip settings.
7.The default gateway you noted should be entered into IP address on your phone however change the last number so if the last number is 2 change it to a 3 to keep in your routers address range.(Make sure it isnt the same as DNS 2 on your phone)
7.Enter the Default Gateway you noted in gateway on your phone as is.
8.Set network prefix length to 24.
9.In DNS 1 on your phone enter the Default Gateway address you noted as is.
10.In DNS 2 on your phone enter the Default gateway settings you noted however the last number should be changed to the following number so if the number is a 2 change to a 3.
I am having the exact same issue, was having it with ICS too! However i think its router dependant because here in my apartment in finland i get the issue, but back home on my router at home it doesn't happen at all! Its definately not a hardware problem it has something to do with software or configuration. Is there an official bug identified by HTC that we can track or something? Its so annoying having to disable wifi cause you know if you leave it enabled you won't get whatsapp notifications after a while
oh also for the record the same router that my OneX stops sending/receiving data from has no issues with my older desire HD, wifi works on it perfectly
@mathrania, Thank you for opening the thread. i have the same problem of yours and we live in the same city!
@all
I have the same exact problem of the OP's.
WiFi has perfect signal, Perfectly connected but data transfer just does not happen. I need to turn WiFi Off and then ON to get the connection working and then in a minute the problem comes back!
I am running stock JB 4.1.1 and my phone's mother board has been recently changed last week by HTC.
Adding to this JB 4.1.1 does not connect to Enterprise networks which is a well known issue in android 4.1.1 which makes me unable to connect my phone in office... so it's like completely un usable wifi.

I may not completely agree that it is a router issue because i have my nexus 7 which in-fact helped me to identify that my phone suffers a problem.
Even my Sony Xperia Arc works fine..

Yes it definitely is annoying, i too had the same issue with ICS ... but i took it so seriously, it was my nexus 7 which made me realize that i have a problem.. the notifications were there on the N7 and the HOX slept nicely without anything :-/
The service center before replacing my motherboard claimed that it works fine. i would not agree and sent it back, i had an unlocked bootloader and they took special approval to change the motherboard and still the same problem!

Thanks for the advise.. i would definitely love to have a solution for the issue. If i remember correctly i had the problem even on my office network.. in other words, was just wondering if you had the problem in all networks ?
Again to make the issue more clear, the WiFi gets connected, however the data transfer dies in sometime, at the same point of time the signals are clear and strong.
i can be 100% sure that this issue is not the same as the famous manufacturing issue with HTC one X as i got my motherboard replaced last week for the same problem and still face the issue.

i should say that this problem has become more evident after the Jelly bean update. I think back and recollect that this problem was there in ICS but in Jelly bean it is noticeable very easily.
I believe your right that you have a different issue to the infamous grip of life wifi issue.
If you did suffer the grip of life problem you would struggle getting a connection with your/any router, (unless you squeezed your phone) you don't struggle connecting to the router so don't do the "squeeze test" or it could damage the phone further.
I'm no expert with your issue, but if it happens on stock rom then it could be hardware related, but you already know this.
Best of luck and sorry I can't help further.

Thanks, no problems.. i am going to record a video to get the problem across to HTC and our forums for help
pretty sure its not hardware related because it doesn't happen on all routers/networks. If you've only tested it on one or two then try on a couple others and see. for me it only occurs on one or two out of about a dozen wifi networks

whyred global versión - wifi disconnects

Hello guys, I have a trouble.
Since I bought the phone I am with constant disconnections with the wifi of my house.
The signal is strong and other devices work well.
I have tried several things.
1. disconnect and connect from the toggle switch.
2. connect and disconnect airplane mode.
3. Rename the router's ssid.
4. I also deleted the password and wrote it again.
and I do not remember if anything else.
I am currently in the official rom and I do not know what else to do.
Maybe it's a trouble of the rom or the hardware?

Maybe it'a an IP conflict with one of your device connected to the router. Try to edit your wifi settings. Set IP SETTINGS to STATIC, then edit the end of your ip address to a higher number. Example from my attach file. My ip address is 192.168.1.3, try changing 3 to 5 or any number up to 255. It'll be 192.168.1.5 and save.

OP did you solve your wifi problem?
i also had that problem. phone had hardware failure so sent it back. havent got my phone yet.
Fixed my wifi issues by setting up a second router as access point and connecting to that instead. I was sure it was not my default router at fault because no other devices had issues with it. The problem showed up just 1 month after i bought the phone so i was sure it was the phone at fault since no other phones or computers had issues but i guess not
still no fix? this problem appears once every or every second day and only a restart helps. on every rom.
