got this tip from contact at t-mobile. if your voicemail calls are not included in your minutes (usually not) you can work around it by dialing your own number instead of the voicemail number!
be cautious, and which your bills, I making no responsibility if turns out to not work for you.

They removed this loop hole ages ago, the best way to use minutes for voice mail is to use HulloMail.

I used to dial my own number. Worked a treat. Now it doesn't.

HulloMail is superb - voicemails delivered as mp3 attachments to emails so you've got them accessible from anywhere, plus a nice visual voicemail app to listen to them from. Highly recommended.
According to the HulloMail website it is "currently not compatible with 2.0/2.1 (Eclair)".

That'll just be for their app, which you don't need to actually use the service.
Thanks
Thank you for the Tip of HulloMail.
All setup and tested, just got to setup my own voice mail later after work
Thanks Again it looks great
and both the apps seem to work fine on the desire as well
Re: get calls to voiceMail included in your minutes
oops sorry for my original post.
just set up hullomail, now i'm in trouble, doesn't work with wifi, no call waiting, no notifications, don't know my original voice mail number, so I can get rid. this means I gonna have to dial 150. I hate talking to t-mobile, its painful.

If you check the Hullomail FAQ's it tells you how to reset your voicemail to T-Mobile, works perfectly with both wifi, and 3G for me with notifications. You can even get SMS notifications!
based on that I rebooted my phone and now works with WiFi. I'm going to give it a bit more of a chance now!

I just installed phone fusion's version of visual voice mail, seems to be way better than Hullomail. The hullomail app is slow, doesn't auto update, and won't play back through your ear piece.
I agree that the fusion app OS much better than Hullomail but I have a problem with the setup on mine. Email and app notifications are working fine but I don't get an SMS notification when I get a new voicemail which means if I'm not in a data area I don't know I've had a message left. Anyone know how to fix this?
HulloMail here
Sorry to hear you have been experiencing problems, which shouldn't occur - in this instance please email [email protected] and we'll be happy to help.
The HulloMail app auto-updates and can be played through the speaker or the ear-peice, it's your choice.
If you dial 222 T-Mobile send you an auto-text to change your Voicemail back

So I found this app the other day, seems like a great idea, but it doesnt work for me on my custom rom at all. Anyone else play with this app?
App Summary
Allows you you to create a predefined list of who to use Google Voice or Your Cell Phone number to call.
There's also Voice Plus which does the same.

Trying to see what there is for visual voicemail.. I've used good voice previously on Evo and just came back from an iPhone. Really miss this feature. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I use Google Voice exclusively. It has visual voicemail and it also lets you text/call from your computer which is a huge time saver.
I was trying to use google voice but I couldn't get it to validate.
google voice is great, I had issues getting it to work until I created a new google voice number instead of just a fowarding/voice mail number and then added the device through the web platform. It has worked ever since.
There is no build in visual voicemail for android afaik. Apple came up with their own protocol for that. As for 3rd party options, there is google voice like everybody mentioned but if you can't/don't want to use google voice then there are some apps on the market which require you to forward your unanswered calls to their number. There is always the privacy issue though which is why I do not use them.
I use Google voice on Verizon there's a YouTube video that I followed and work very well. Just go to your Google/voice.com and get a Google voice number and set it up like that.

To use Google Voice for voice mail you have to enable conditional call forwarding. For Verizon this is as easy as dialing *71 and then the 10 digit number. For Sprint I don't think it is that easy. You may want to call their customer care. Hopefully you can get it working, I'm not sure I could live without mine.

Thanks for the info. Will try gv again.
PF Voicemail+ it's free on the market and I've been using since the OG Droid days. It's perfect. I like the fact that it'll let you play the voicemail either over speaker or through the actual headset. Try it out :O

I use google voice. It is not the best at transcribing the voicemail, but you can play, pause, and delete right from the app.

Yes, I know, rebooting an old Thread. But it's better than starting a new one, right??
Based on reading this thread, as well as some other looking around I have done, it seems the only real options for free VVM are Google Voice, Youmail, or Visual Voicemail Plus.
I cannot use Google Voice. Not that I don't like it. I love using GV. However, my cell number is tied to the GV account that I use for work, so that I basically have a dual line cell phone (my VZW Number for normal stuff and the GV number for work stuff). With that, I cannot give my cell number to another GV account to get VoiceMail.
The market reviews for both YouMail and Visual Voicemail Plus leave much to be desired. Seems that for every review that says it is great, is a review that says it is crap. But, most people just review the app when it is causing issues, so it is not always a great idea to put stake in reviews. Wondering what the opinion is of people here.
One major problem I'm having on all ICS builds is the voicemail issue.. Visual voicemail always crashes and i have to dial out to retrieve my voicemails. Ive tried the clear data and force stop method but once you receive a new v mail the problem repeats itself. Has anyone found a solution? I refuse to use google voice..

Sprint VVM is borked in the ICS builds. I believe its a bug with the notifications. Uninstall it and use Youmail until its fixed. Youmail is a nice standalone alternative and easy to activate and deactivate.

Why all the hate with Google Voice? Im just curious. Its come in handy a few times.
Ok thanks Ill give youmail a try.. And i google voice is just to much for me.. It records your text messages and everything uploads all your info online.. It comes in handy but that's too much control. I don't need google knowing everything about me lol.

Can you use Youmail as a replacement for regular sprint voice mail?
I have elderly parents that if they can't reach me on my cell will leave me a vm instead of texting.
On CM9, if you push visual voicemail to system>app and set permissions, it'll stop it from crashing. The new problem is that it keeps retrying to "get your information" every time you open the app then.

Why do you refuse to use Google voice? I set it up without integrating it with my sprint number and telling it not to be used for any calls. Then, I see it as the ultimate vvm because I can get messages on my tablet, desktop chrome browser, etc. If you don't let it have the additional functionality, it behaves pretty much the same as the stock vvm... Unless I'm way off base?

I've also used GrooveIP - although the last time I tried there was a nasty lag and echo, on both LTE and Wifi.
+1 for grooveIP. Tweak your settings to remove echo, I dont have any issues with sound quality.
