Is is me or just non sense? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im new to the scene, got my Desire about a week ago and have been trying to find a rom to stick with, having tried about 5 so far (mixture of sense and non sense). I'd prefer a non sense rom like OD or CM but i have a major issue which there may be a fix for but i cant seem to find any help on it.
I've found that only the sense roms allow me to dial a number directly from the body of an email. i.e when i press a number is launches the dialer with the number entered but with non sense roms e.g. OD or CM nothing happens when i press the numbers.
My first question is
Is there something that can be done to allow this to happen in the non sense roms,? i.e a mod, app, hack.
Or is anyone able to tell me which component of the sense rom allows this to happen? is it the sense ui itself? the htc dialer, etc.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's HTC's Phone app
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

And it requires Sense framework. Someone might though try to mod it to run on normal froyo/eclair framework... but I'd not bet on it.

So atm my only choice is to use a stripped down sense Rom?

question about porting roms

Hi guys,
I am considering getting a Desire, or possibly wait for the Supersonic to replace my HTC Magic.
Problem is, I'm not a fan of SenseUI, I would much rather run stock Android. I know you can sort of disable Sense, but that only disables the Sense homescreen, and the Sense integration goes much deeper. Plus, I don't want to have to rely on HTC updating their roms with Sense.
However seeing as most people like Sense, I fear there will not be much or any interest with devs to build Sense-less (heh) roms for the Desire.
So I was wondering if anyone could tell me how hard it is to take, for instance a Nexus One rom, and port it to a device like the Desire or Supersonic so I could do it myself? I never did any rom cooking and I have no idea how much work would be involved in it.
Any info would be greatly appreciated
if you see other android models there are versions without the sense too. so i am 100% positive there will be a stock android rom for the desire

Yeah but most of those phones came without Sense to begin with I don't think there's many people running stock Android on Hero's for example right?
Anyway, I do hope you're right though
Desire and Nexus can run the same roms (apparently as they had the desire rom on the nexus in no time) so you'd be able to just flash a stock rom from the nexus forum.
You can simply turn off the sence UI. Go into applications and stop it! then when you hit home it asks you if you would like to use sence UI or standard home, hit the tick box to remeber selection and choose home. Sence UI disabled!
There is a video on youtube a2Amcaot1Us but I can't post a link!
As I already said, that only disables the SenseUI homescreen, and Sense integration goes deeper than the homescreen. And it also doesn't solve the dependence on HTC in regards to providing OS updates.
I have a Sprint Hero. There are several ROM's that use the Nexus One launcher. These do not have Sense UI on them. However, I would not try what someone posted earlier about taking a ROM from a different phone and putting it on yours. This could brick your phone and you would be screwed.
In time when someone figures out how to Root there will be ROM's that don't have Sense. The phones seem to run faster without it, but I love Sense and would not swicth to a phone that does not have it.

Remove HTC default phone/txt/contact apps

Hi there all,
Is it possible to remove the HTC sense phone, txt and contacts apps.
I prefer the Android version alot to the HTC ones.
If you are running a sense rom it will cause you problems if you try to.

Dam... so is it possible to install just the HTC camera on say a Cyanogen 6 ROM?
If one was to remove the default HTC phone, txt and contacts and isntall Android and set as default I cant see a problem.
Can anyone point me in the direction of ripping apk's from a image. I've got various Sense and non Sense ROMS and I'd like to look into having together my perfect ROM.
I want the Friend Stream app from HTC Sense on my CM6 RC1, and the weather app. Wouldnt mind the nice transparent bottom menu I've seen in some Foroy sense ROMS.

[Q] HTC ContactsIME?

Does anyone know were to find the htc contacts app, I much prefer roms without sense, but came across pinkys rom which uses a few of the htc stock apps, and they are pretty useful. Would be great if these were flashable! So as maybe I could use it on a rom that doesn't use sense.

All the HTC stuff depends on the Sense framework, so you can hardly get Contacts without pulling most of the Sense in.

You can always opt for the donate version of ADW launcher. Comes with similar widgets to the sense

HTC sense (or similar), sane interface for the Galaxy..

Hello all,
I have my Galaxy for almost 2 weeks and the more I use it the more I realize that the Samsung interface is nothing short of idiotic. Today I compared it with an HTC device some colleagues at work and what I thought were just pure Android OS stupidity it turned out to be Samsung's
Just an example: In the dialer application, if I start typing a contact name, I get a match ONLY if I type the first letters -- I get no match in the middle of a word.
Also, when a match is found, I am not presented with all the phone numbers for that contact, only the first one.
That's _really_ bad -- even my old Omnia running WM6.5 can do better than that.
Needless to say same thing worked as expected on the HTC running Froyo.
So, the question is: Is there any custom ROM (ideally 2.2) that doesn't suffer from this stupidity ? Or -- even better -- is HTC Sense (or a similiar, sane interface) ported to the Galaxy ? Or maybe even a vanilla 2.2 GUI ?
Thanks...
do a market search on 'launcherpro'. it's as good if not better than htc sense (with all the built in widgets), at least until the newer version of htc sense from desire hd comes out.
this is not really android rom dev, is it?
As this seems to be a dialer problem for example, check out the alternative ones from the market, one may cover what you miss...
For example dialer one. It's at least way faster than the stock one...
Oh, and +1 to LauncherPro (Plus), unless you use Touchwiz widgets.

Thanks for the tip, will look into it.
Well, I'm not so sure it's not rom dev since I'm not sure how much TouchWiz is embedded with ROM, if there are "vanilla" ROMs without TouchWiz or other cooked ROMs with other (better) interfaces, etc. etc.
So you tell me if it's rom dev or if it's not
P.S. And yes, "HTC Sense" was just an example, maybe not the best. Maybe I should have said "a saner interface than TouchWiz"...
the dialer found in froyo rom will be able to search in the middle of the name, instead of just starting.
you can run launcherpro over touchwiz although you probably want to remove the touchwiz widgets as they are not accessible outside of touchwiz. (which means you need to have your rom rooted). But you can't remove touchwiz completely (unless things has changed in the last 1 month) as it's integral component to feature/function beyond shell interface (e.g. you need this if you want to use kies to connect to your galaxy)

Not sure which Froyo you are talking about, but the test above is on the XXJPH I have installed off this very forum (and seems "ho-hum" in terms of stability on my device).
Anyway, will take a look at LauncherPro -- maybe it will alleviate some of the issues with TouchWiz

Unfortunately, it isn't. Is there a way to hack it?
Theres already a Bounty for porting HTC Sense/the full ROM to our phones. Search, got around $1000+ between both threads (one over in the other subforums), but we need someone to port it. There is someone who has semi done it, just need him to release it publicly.
if you really want something similar to htc sense then check out this awsome mod from JAguirre1231 here , its the closest thing to sense (at least for now) with azreils sense theme. Or if you want stock android, you can check this which includes stock everything but only 2.1 (no its not a port, it still has touchwiz framework but everything is stock even the phone app) . Hopefully devs are working on cyanogen and once thats out, you will get what you want. until then you can use these
Hope i helped
HTC Sense is consider warez on XDA if it is not on an HTC device. HTC already threatened to sue acouple of developers on the Motorola Droid for porting it.
When I start typing 626 the equivalent for "mam" I get more suggestions.
first is "mama".
I also get a girl with the name "oana" because 626 numbers also equals "oan".
And I get some random guy that it happens to have a number like 07 626 3xxxx

Htc dialer and aosp roms

Is it possible? I just take the apk and install it as a standalone app?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I don't think this would work as it may require some sense components.
I would prefer to use the HTC Dialer myself instead of Gingerbread's default.
You should check out Go Dialer and Go Contacts. They are the closest apps I have found to the sense functionality
TouchPal dialer provides similar function
As far as using HTC apps on AOSP, it's a no go. HTC use their own framework so you would have to get all the libs and try to port it. Big ask and just something someone won't do. Prob because there are a lot of Sense roms out there.
You could try and flash MIUI's.dialer. That's pretty close to HTC'S version.
Swyped...
Another possibility would be to try a desensed Sense-ROM like Leedroid (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768703) and after that reinstall rosie.apk

chrrh...
