I am new to android with questions about stock vs rooting - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, So I got an epic today and was delighted at some of the stock functionality that came with it. There are 2 things inparticular right now that i would really wanna keep after I root the phone. The semi comm manager in the notification drop down and the samsung program monitor which also has a widget.
Now for the samsung program monitor as well as other sprint services can i just .apk them up using android mate than reinstall on a new build?
also what about the 4 communication switches in the notifications bar is it possible to get that on a custom rom?
I am just loving this phone.

rooting does not mess with ur apps, it just provides root access so u can use apps that require root. We are not able to flash custom roms yet on the epic, but once that happens, then it depends if the rom that u use can support those features if they are touchwiz native.

Sorry I meant to say if I root my phone and install a custom rom like CM-6, although even once we can install custom roms i'm definitely gonna wait until 4g is supported on the custom rom. So Ill probably just have to try out a rom that has touchwiz built in, but hopefully not to prevalent.

Im not a big fan of touch wiz, but I like the wifi bluetooth controls on notification window and also built in tsk manager so I use launcher pro home replacement and can still use the tw features I like

I see, that sounds like a pretty good idea. I also just found a tutorial for getting rid of the touchwiz launcher so once the 2.2 update is out can try that as well and use the 2.2 stock
launcher.

What UI are YOU, running on your Android build?

i was juss curious as to how other Rhodium owners have their Android setup. As far as looks go. Ive went thru a lot of different UI's already looking for the most stable one. Im Currently running the: Crazy Home Lite, FreedHome, Home(default), TagHome, and ZEAM. All of those are very customizable. Some let u use the Live wallpapers, and some dont. Some will even let u have up to 9 different screens, if u choose. it goes on and on on the type of mods u can do. |ike my AOSP build looks alot better n slicker thn some of these Sense ones. Its just the way i customized it, thats all.
So what are u using? or what have u done? Screenshots, even better..lol

Stock vanilla 2.1. home & launcher. I would like to get ADW launcher to work though. Those home replacement apps are lame. I had a phase where I would test every new home replacement app, but I always found that a decent modded launcher and stock home was the best combo. Most modded launchers will let you choose the number of home screens and which to set as the default. So many mods that I haven't been able to get working on this build. Wysie's contacts, ADW Launcher, now pushing Meltus' volume hack as I type.
I'm just waiting for the Evo 4G and Galaxy S to launch to make my decision on what phone to get. I'm not disparaging the TP2, I just obviously need Android on a native device. I need options.

The hottest, most advanced phone coming out is the Dell Streak. It drops this summer or september. Its a fully fledged 5 in Tablet PC with Capacitive touch screen, multitouch, Cam on the front and back(dual cam), 5in screen, Snapdragon processor, has latest bluetooth, wifi, and check this 3G CONNECTIVITY YEAHHHHHHHH....which means i can juss plop my sim in there and im good to go because its also a phone but being marketed as a Fully capable Tablet PC. My pops getting the EVO soon. ive been trying to school him on it and this website.

haved u ever tried to use the MetaMorph? i tried but it says i need busybox. if u look n the system file processes or whatever, we already have busybox or some version of it already installed in our builds. Its just not active or i dont know how to activate it to use it.
Yeah, I used MetaMorph to theme some parts of some former builds. I haven't tried it on the TP2 though.
I'm pretty sure busybox is in AOSP. Try running just "busybox" in terminal, you'll see that it at least is loaded. Whether it works fully or not, I haven't been able to confirm. I actually used some busybox commands when I was pushing the .csv volume hacks earlier today, but again, that didn't work.
yeah, ive seen it in my AOSP. Just havent been able to activate or use it to allow Metamorph to wrk. Metamorph keeps telling me i need busybox..figures..lol

I love AOSP.
Sense is a waste of resource for me--eye candy without significant UI improvement.

Roms

I have only ever changed my romm from 2.1 to 2.2 stock. Not sure what makes a custom rom so much better. What else can you physically do? Is there one that works with ota stock radio and froyo update (downgraded to get it). I am rooted on 2.2. I would like to see whats so cool about changing. Advice?

Try them out for yourself. Personally I like the fact that custom roms have verizon bloat removed and also seem the run more smoothly. Just remember to create a Nandroid backup of your stock rom so you can go back to it whenever you want.

Download ROM Manager and Titanium Back up... make a Backup of your ROM currently and try out another ROM! no harm in trying it. If you don't like it you can always go back to EXACTLY how you left it.
Anyways... every ROM has there "thing" and they usually start off as a vanilla or a sense based ROM. A ROM can be optimized to to be much snappier and even come with their own custom kernels. Don't forget that you can get better battery life! They all work with the Stock froyo radio... except maybe the Desire ROM. I think you need the latest radio leak for that one, but you can install it and mess with it... just no signal.
These devs pretty much can add, delete, and modify practically anything and everything and it seems to be ALWAYS better over stock.
Examples...
-My app drawer has added functionality now. I can uninstall apps straight from the app drawer and I can organize my apps in FOLDERS inside the app drawer so now it's not just a huge list of icons anymore.
-When adding apps to my homescreen I can change the naming convention or have no name at all!
-ROMs come with a lil "theme" to them so us users don't have to hassle with adding the mods our self.
-battery indicators
-notification drag down bar
-rosie can be different (vanilla, sense, expresso) with right button customed
-widgets can be themed to look more aesthetically pleasing
-a mix mash of vanilla and htc apps are used (best of both worlds)
-the Inc camera can be replaced with the EVO
-added Pre-Installed Apps for us (ex. wireless tether)
.....etc.
The list can go on and on. you can do a lot of this on your own but why when a dev has done it for you? and not only were they nice enough to create a nice ROM for us but they also went through beta testers to catch most of the bugs and glitches you would find if you did it yourself!
Anyways, download and flash a couple ROMs and you will never go back!
Thanks for the awesome response. I certainly would like folders in my app drawer so i didnt use a whole screen for folders. Thanks again

His rom sounds like uncommensense. Most roms dont actually do that. His does. Your launcher can also add alot of customization. Launcher pro allows you to elimanate names but you cant name folders where as open home allows you to.hes right check it out. Thats most of the fun.

correct... those were just examples. every rom has their "advantage" over others. the custom app drawer is definitely ROM specific.

Custom ROM with whitelist feature.....

Is there a custom rom out that allows a "Call Blocking" mode, with a whitelist feature?
The stock Galaxy S3 from AT&T has a call blocking option, which is toggle on or off, and within that, you can choose to whitelist certain contacts, so for example, my phone has call blocking turned in at night, but yet certain work people can ring my phone no matter what, my family, etc.
That's the basic piece that would be awesome. To make it beyond perfect, having the option to let text sounds, email sounds, and phone sounds come through for a designated contact would be the icing on the cake.
It's the one feature I've missed from my old Blackberry, the sound profiles and the "exception" list was above and beyond great.
Thanks,
10k
AW: Custom ROM with whitelist feature.....
Not a custom ROM but an App (needs root though). Give LBE Security Manager a shot. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422479

This is also the reason why I've stuck with AT&T's stock firmware for so long. I wanted to try out Rogers' stock firmware on my i747, but I wanted to know know if there is a way to tell what bloatware comes in each carrier released version. I'm just being told that Rogers has less bloatware than AT&T, but I have no way of telling how much less bloatware as I want to get good battery life without the device being unstable. Custom ROMs no longer interest me unless its something that adds features from the Note2.
I'm trying to look for the APK file that you wanted that you can play with it from the stock ROM I had extracted earlier.
That's what I've been doing too. I've tried quite a few ROM's over the time I've had Android devices, but that one feature is something I actually really appreciate having.
I am currently using the stock AT&T ROM on my device, rooted it, and went nuts with root uninstaller (a few times a little too nuts, but CWM saved the day). It's running well, but I do miss how great some of those custom rom's do with battery life and speed.
Instead of looking for a ROM, why not simply install an app like touch pal contacts that had option for both white listing and black listing.

I actually haven't found one that does what I want, cleanly anyway. I'll try your suggestion out.
If you are looking at AOSP roms you will need to look at the Play Store or some mods. A couple mentioned here are not bad but like you said, they may not be as "easy" as what you want. You can always try some customized ROMS based off the SGS3 stock ROM. I have tried one or two with the Blocking Feature (maybe more but since I have only recently started using it I didn't really look for it).

Flashaholics/themeaholics

Hi, my names Chad and im a flashaholic. It all started when I got my Sprint Galaxy Note II. After rooting and flashing my first rom there was no looking back.
I have found a daily driver and I'm not going to drop any names. Every dev involved with creating these mods and roms for this device are amazing. While performance is important, I like moding, EVERYTHING.
I would like to know what everyone else likes about flashing roms. What is important to you? Maybe some screenshots of mods you've done to your phone?
Here's my keyboard. (=

I actually flash a lot less than I did when I have the Evo 4G. I'm more modded, but I'm mainly just changing files.
I'm running doexidezed stock MC2, Persues Kernel 3.6, with the 4-1 reboot, all mutliwindow mods. Changed the Spen detection sounds to ligh sabler, changed boot anmination to Andy's Pee On Apple, changed boot sound to Lexus ISF start up and engine rev, disable shut off animations, using only one homescreen page (no widgets), use the Trev E Mod WiFi tether beta 3.3 and folder mount.
I'm interested in the cyogenmod when it's out of alpha. I'm waiting for the mutliboot mod to get completed. It's getting closer on the international. BootManager on the Evo4G was the best app for flashaholics. You could have a daily and as many ROMs as your SD card could hold. I usually had three--barebones Sense rom, Cyogenmod (Android 2.3), and Cyogenmod (Android 4). Here and there I would have a forth or fifth to fiddle with.
The other rom I'm interested in trying out, and it's extremely early, is more of port of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. I've seen a couple screen shots, pretty sweet if you're into the mutlitwindow/mutlitask thing.
Right now, deoxidized stock meets my needs well. Nothing, other than Google Wallet, appears to be borked. And a few mods, I able to more.
My name is Jamice Welbon and I am a flashaholic I first introduced to flashing through my friend Treo Central.com he get me hooked flashing my Treo 600, 650, 700p and 710wp but soon after that treocentral.com was not cutting it for me so I tried ppc geeks. com and started flashing my touch pro 2.
I tried every windows ROM I could find and even experimented with some android. With the introduction of Windows phone and the stifled future future ROM development I knew I needed something stronger.
I went to Xda developers.com and started using Android on a regular bases. I first purchases the Samsung Epic then I tried the Epic Touch 4g and I am currently using the Galaxy Note 2. I have customized my boot animation (My Little Pony FIM), converted my phone into tablet mode, changed my font, added a hack version of Google Wallet, but I am currently using a non hack version since the Note 2 is now an official supported device. I have a hacked mod to remove the unsupported device message from Google Wallet since my device is rooted.
I am currently using a ROM which is half touch wiz and half stock Android. The dialer and contacts are stock Android. I even put a mod on my phone where I can customize the DPI for every app on my phone. I can even open up as many apps as I want and have them floating on my phone's desktop. I am fening for the Galaxy Note 3.
I am currently thinking about modding my shut down screen.
I need help and that is why I am on this forum. It has affected my job and my relationships in a negative way.

So I assume im on MA7 with my current rom whatever that is and I need to get MC2 roms for the floating windows?
The choice between 5 roms what ever shall i do? Does anyone have any suggestions? I like bling and great sound mods and all the bells and whistles including wifi tether and lightsaber spen effects!
It seems like there are alot of different versions of this phone. I assume im in the right spot with a sprint note 2? The mackrom allstars has been working great.
Thank you much!
Flashing adventure
So i ventured off to my flashing adventure. I first tried jelly 16.0 which was pretty awesome and the flash works in regular browser which is AWESOME but it didnt seem to have floating window. I tried installing the apk switcher thingie and it didnt even show up. I found the thread for the floating multi window installed it and nothing..... I flashed the sprint zip file for it and then the phone wouldnt boot.
I installed wolfpack and i still dont have floating windows...... i am going to install the apk next and will update my progress
Ok so im supposed to have a toggle icon which i dont and waiting for answer in the rom forum. Also the flash doesnt work in the desktop version of the browser something that worked in jellie rom 16.0 =(
Im running MacksRom (Plain Jane MA7) at the moment and have multiwindow desktop mod. It's in xposed settings.

No. It's a framework work. As mentioned above, you just need install the Xposed framework APK. I've used it on a deoxidezed MA7 stock rom. MC2 is just more performance tweaks and bug fixes.
Ok i understand more but now i lost multiview
i did the installer i activated the plugins in teh installer i set the resolution on android system to 1280x800 i have rebooted and no multiview now. i cant get it back =(
Moon, check your pm's.

I finally got it worked out
I checked out the OP in jellyroms post where it talks about installing the framework. I factory reset cleared caches dalvik etc and reflashed. Once flashed i did exactly what it said minus the downloading the items because they were alread in the rom. Now i have multiwindow. I didnt mess with the DPI though only set the resolution to 1280x800 and it works. I am scared to use the DPI changer though because although it looks really super cool. I lost the multiview doing it. I even tried setting the multiview to the same dpi. the com-flash whatever file and reboot still no luck... So it does work but im in regular phone resolution which isnt bad i guess because you dont have to mess with all the apps dpis etc? the internet built in was FC'n during my mess of flashing etc.....
Any ideas or suggestions on why i lost the multiview? I would like to change the dpi at some point but i dont want to factory reset (which is what i had to eventually do to get the multiview back anyway.
Thank you for all that put up with my frantic questions.
Glad you got it up and working!

To Root or Not To Root. THAT is the question.

Here is a delimma I haven't had since I first bought my G1 (before root was even discovered): Should I root this device?
I'm looking for genuine opinions here. I've owned a G1, MT4G, Galaxy S3, and now the Note 3 and out of all of them, the Note 3 is the only one where I actually have no intention of installing Stock Android (as I'd lose all the features that made me want the Note to begin with). On those older devices, I wanted to OC to speed up the devices or use them for tetheing. TouchWiz on the GS3 annoyed the hell out of me as it seemed unnecessary, it's at least justified on the Note. But now I don't need them for tethering and I don't need to overclock this device, despite the fact that I want to anyway and I don't intend on installing a Stock ROM. What incentives are there to rooting now?
Right now all I can think of is GMD. I'm looking for someone to re-inspire me to root again.

rooting is fine at this point. However, as twrp causes an all but irreparable error, you might want to wait for a reliable recovery before installing any modded roms.

The main reason I rooted last night was to install Ad Block, Titanium Backup to freeze some bloat and run Chainfire's region lock removal. I agree with you though, I bought the Note for the SPen features so an AOSP rom would take that away. There is 1 custom ROM already that retains TouchWiz and SPen features that I am debating on trying. I'm still on the fence of installing a custom rom since its very early into development for the device.
I would say rooting imho is mandatory. It doesn't matter how big he screen is Samsung always makes the stuff on it way to large for my use. I have to modify the DPI and use Xposed to remove many of the status bar icons or I would never be able to have enough room on the status bar and notification pull down. I also uninstall some of the bloat, enable call recording, use isis, and more. I don't run a custom rom I just run a DeOdexed stock rom and do everything I need manually for now.
I'm not going to "convince" anyone per say, but just keep following the forums until something forces you to root again. I for one missed Titanium Backup since it can backup everything, I've tried Helium, but for some reason it just wouldn't backup ES File Explorer and Beautiful Widgets on my S4. These are just normal apps and I don't know why it wouldn't work. Also, removing bloat and adding more apps for the Pen Window feature.
I'll be rooting once my 14 days are passed and start flashing again once the recovery's restore feature is working properly again. I don't root to overclock, I root so I can customize my phone even more and add features which wasn't added for stock. Also, I miss the auto GPS on/off by Secure Settings. It requires root and I can't use it just yet!
I still say root, there's a lot of things you can only do with root even on stock. You can block ads, adjust dpi, delete bloat, and manage files better. You can also use the command line for a lot more things when rooted. You can also install the xposed framework to get some of the unofficial ROM benefits on the stock ROM like per-app DPI, something very useful on a high resolution, big screen like Notes have.

I am planning on rooting for the sole purpose of restoring my FF3 saved game. I lost a saved game once when my SGS3 bricked (SDS) and am just about where I was when I lost that one.

I rooted for the sole purpose of installing AdAway. The stock ROM is so awesome I really don't see me wanting a custom one. I love this beast.

Root is definitely mandatory for me. I can install the custom font that I use, get rid of ads (which is 100% worth it for me), I can delete apps I don't want, not just freeze them, and customize the device how I want.
I root because I want to own my device.. it's mine I m it's administrator.. not my provider .. not Samsung. . ME..
With that said Samsung s stock roms are solid just like aosp is.. The true need for root has diminished a lot in last 12 months .. I root because I can.. I completely understand there is no real need for it but to deny warranty on those who root is plain wrong... just my 2 cents

Agreed. I root to make it 100% mines! I also do it to under clock a step... Not much into OC'ing anymore. This will probably be the first ROM I stay close to stock with minus some of those extra mods and tweaks that separates my Note 3 from the average consumer...
Rooting can let you easily backup and restore application data.

Rooting
I personally like the idea of rooting. I'm spending my own hard earned money on this mobile device and I should be able to do what the hell I want with it. I will also root to get rid of Carrier IQ and when I am tired of TouchWiz.
you should only root under the following conditions.
1. check your personality that you are not a person who rush things!
2. do 10 hour reading about rooting, how to root on your device, its benefits, and its drawback
3. after rooting, you should spend at least 1 hour reading about the rom/mod you want to install
4. optional. have a device warranty with cell provider. they will always change a soft brick phone with you telling them it just died.

Sorry but I don't know anything about that model.
When I got my note, I took it home, opened the box, insert battery, hit the three keys to download mode, plug phone into my pc and Odin root, reboot and bam first time using my note.
