[Q] Can we compile a working firmware with the Samsung source? - Galaxy S I9000 Android Development

Pretty much as the title suggests. If not, where do I find a kitchen that works?

Nobody? How about kitchens?

Pretty much
But if you would set everything up and run the build_kernel.sh script, you would end up with a 2.5 MB zImage, which is almost half the size of original zImage. This is beacuse initramfs is not available. I am not sure about the consequence of flashing this.
You can initramfs for i9000 from LeshaK's github. Though you'll have to modify the script not to replace the downloaded .config with the defconfig for aries_rev03.

Wow, finally another DEVELOPMENT question!
Keep it up!
Now for my answer: I'm working on a kitchen, have the extract / mod part mostly done, now working on initramfs extract / mod / repack (without the need to compile the kernel!) and repacking everything for flashing.
I hope to come up with something where you can start with any existing rom (different from some kitchens which are based on a particular version), mix and match apps and features compatible with that rom, then cook it for flashing either straight from Odin or installing from an update.zip.

Just be sure to get the most recent sources. An older zip I had still had only binary blobs for the graphics kernel module, but they have now been GPL'ed. Joy!

i would like to build my own kernel but i am not able to.. help me pls

I would like to build my i9000's kernel but there are problems
I've installed ubuntu 9.10.
As you know, i could download the source code from the web
In that there are codes for making kerne
and also there is a script, named build_kernel, which makes me be able to build the kernel.
At first, i installed sourcery toolchain and then modified the build_kernel.sh
Because the instruction said i should change toolchain's directory and prefix
And finally i built it writing './build_kernel.sh'.
It seemd to be working but there were so many errors
And the zimage file was small, it's only 2.1MB
I tried to flash that kernel but it made my phone go black.
Can anyone help me please?
What should i do?
How did some people make such great kernels? Sorry im newbie.

Compiling a working kernel

Hi all,
I recently began editing the Galaxy S kernel, from the downloadable open source package.
After some time I compiled my changes into a zImage. My problem is, it won't flash when i put it in the most recent PHONE_I9000XWJG5.tar.
Odin3 just hangs at Flashing zImage...
My zImage is about 2.5MB in size, and the original JG5 zImage is 4.6MB, so I guess I am missing something.
I think I am missing the modules (which you can also compile). But I'm not sure.
Does anyone know how to compile a working kernel for the Samsung Galaxy S?
Thanks in advance!
First:
Read here: http://www.cianer.com/androidg1/28-building-android-kernel-images
Then here: http://www.receptorblog.com/wordpress/howto-compile-a-linux-kernel-for-samsung-galaxy/
and finally here: http://forum.samdroid.net/f9/dev-vmware-image-build-i5700-kernel-2-6-29-android-2-1-a-984/
not update.zip,why?
In recovery, no sd update.zip option, how can I tune out?
I'm also trying to make a new kernel based on JM5.
My goal is to fix the BlueTooth issues.. I think i've found the problem in a kernel's .c file...
I'm following this link:
HERE
I'm downloading the GT-i9000 opensource ZIP from Samsung, but i don't quite understand where can i get the Android Toolchain....
Is It really 6GB as it says HERE ?
I wish there was a XDA-like tutorial for this

Extracting kernel config from I9000XXJP3

Dear all,
Did anyone succeed extracting kernel configuration from I9000XXJP3? Kernel version is 2.6.32.9, the vermagic is "2.6.32.9 mod_unload ARMv7"
extract-ikconfig doesn't work on it.
I succeeded extracting a zImage gzipped payload, but it seems not to contain any configuration in it (see attached).
/proc/config.gz doesn't exist, Samsung open source package (downloaded from Samsung open source site) contains only Android 2.1 Eclair or previous versions.
My target is to build tun.ko and, eventually, ext3/ext4 modules to make them working in Samsung Galaxy S I9000 with rooted I9000XXJP3.
Any idea?
Without froyo source code or a good Samsung Kernel (es. for himem capable) I think is impossible to play good with theses beta roms.
Ciao
Any news? I need tun.ko for jp3 too..
I have tried to compile the 2.6.32.9 kernel editing the .config in 2.6.9, the module tun.ko is accepted by the device, but I get a kernel panic!

Did you use the stock linux kernel? Or the common from android.kernel.org?
I'm trying the same thing actually. Isn't there any default config for the processor that might work? I tried with the config from .29 but when loading the module it says wrong format.
try to build 2.6.32 with the 2.6.29 config ("yes" all missing stuff)
turn on your galaxy, adb push the tun.ko
try to load it, it will say "missing symbols" blabla
find the config options that match those symbols, enable them, recompile, try again
Great to see some people who are hacking the kernel! Keep it up!
But I'm afraid it is not going to be as easy as dropping aries_rev03_defconfig as .config in a 2.6.32 kernel tree and doing 'make oldconfig'. That's because many of Samsung's changes have not been included in the newer mainline kernel versions yet.
Samsung added quite a lot of low-level board support for their dev boards (and for the SGS, of course), did some customization and added a few drivers which you will need to forward-port to the newer kernel.
Please have a look at this thread, in which I've started a breakdown of the Samsung patches against Android Eclair's 2.6.29 kernel.
The best course of action I think is to git clone Android's kernel from AOSP, checkout the android-2.6.29 branch, apply Samsung's patches to that, then attempt to rebase your tree to a newer kernel version. (Note, you may want to start with small steps, to get a feel for what you're up against )
Note that there probably will be lots of merge conflicts which you need to resolve, and after dealing with all those, you also have to make sure that everything else that's merged still works as expected, but at least that will show you the amount of work involved. You will basically be doing all the work that Samsung is doing right now for their kernel for FroYo. It will be interesting to follow their progress on the mailing lists and on IRC.

Thats exactly what I did, but I got wrong module format... which is a fatal error. I need to invest further in the used config... maybe i did not pick up the right one properly..

Yes that would be a lot of work. Maybe its better to just wait until they release the kernel from froyo. I read that they release their opensource stuff rather fast. But just for adding a module like ext4 I don't think you need those patches, because imho they didn't touch the fs of the kernel. We just need an adaquate kernel config and adding modules should be possible.

Make sure you're using the same kernel version number and build number, because samsung kernels do not have the option to load incorrect module versions
Yes i've set the subversion as well but without the patches from samsung its impossible it seems. We need to wait and hope that they release the froyo kernel sources soon....

Are you sure they set CONFIG_MODVERSIONS? It's off in the downloadable sources.
Just compare the output of `modinfo -F vermagic <yourmodule>` to `modinfo -F vermagic <modulewhichloads>` or to /proc/version .
did this get solved yet? I google'd for the tun.ko file for my i9000 using jp3 but nothing yet... if you have a proper one for the MoDaCo version here please attach it! ~
I think I saw someone's post with tun.ko for FroYo beta somewhere in these forums, I mean i9000 Android Dev. One of the guys here has found a way to compile kernel for jp* here. I am sure.
I actually found it attached somewhere in the forum and it was 1,5447 mb big I think it was... but it still didn't work for me so I presumed the kernel or something must have been wrong.

[Q][Help] B5510 - Building Kernel/boot.img Problem

Hi there.
First: Im a noob, so unless i have fewer than 10 posts i can only post in general forum - otherwise i would post on an existing thread (i will mention later).
Last week i got a new phone: Samsung Galaxy Y Pro (GT-B5510).
Its a nice phone, but im missing a thing: a firewall.
I tried droidwall and other, but they arnt working. So there is something wrong with the netfilter/iptables modul and ive to rebuild the kernel.
After a quick search i found this thread and this post.
I already set up a Ubuntu (10.04.4), downloaded the source from samsung and the toolchain from Sourcery (like they mention inthe infofile from samsung).
I build the kernel, like irfanbagus in his post, but for my device.
I got lots of compilerwarnings, but in the end i have had my zImage without errors.
I split my boot.img, which i got from my device with Terminal Emulator, with split_bootimg.pl.
Now ive got a kernelimage and a initrd and ive to put them together.
Presumably with mkbootimg, but ive to know the baseadress.
I tried the offset from the thread mentiond above.
I made a tar and flashed it with Odin1.85 and half bricked it.
[I only can see a grey battery on the diplay and if i reboot it it stuck on bott/splashscreen]
Maybe somebody can help. (please)
Is the problem the compiled kernel, due to the warnings?
Or is it the wrong baseaddress? Well i could not find the address inside the sourcecode (like kconfig), like i read somewhere, thats why i tried the one from s5360.
There is no problem with odin or the cable, cause i can flash my backup with it to 'unbrick' it.
And why is the bootimg around 700kb smaller than the original?
Thanks a lot in advance.

upload your boot.img
boot.img
Here it is.
boot.tar = compiled
boot-stock.tar = original from my device
Size is not problem as long running well.
In my sgy always fail when size >
5.5mb
For boot-stock.tar u get from dd or pda stock-rom ??
Mmm i thing irfan has answer so ur save dude.
its dd.
i don't find any problem with boot.img. offset is equal (0x81600000). the problem maybe in your zImage. make sure you build with correct defconfig. mine is bcm21553_totoro_05_defconfig, i don't know yours, see in text info inside zip file from samsung. and make sure using the same compiler version with text info said. using different version make prebuild kernel module inside initramfs not working. start with default config from xxx_defconfig just to make sure your step is correct. and if still not working your best hope is build your module as loadable module (.ko), add init.d support in init.rc (inside initramfs), and load your module using init.d script.
about the size, it's nomal boot.img from dd command bigger than normal boot.img because it's copy whole partition and include unused bytes behind the original boot.img.
hm, ok.
thank you irfan.
i followed the instructions from the txt inside the archive:
"bcm21553_luisa_03_defconfig" with "g++ 2009q3-68 arm eabi"
ill try again.
my bad. i download wrong files, and end up with comparing the same original boot.img
your compiled boot.img don't have md5 checksum. i am not sure it have effect, i make that tutorial based post from harish2704 here. mkbootimg from harish2704 have --kernelMD5 param. try use that one.

our kernel partition only 5 mb my friend...
Boot.img from dd not work with me so i pick from pda stock-rom
(i use from doky thread).
Mmm that why i fail when boot.img more than 5mb.
Trying other method to compile, irfan say merruk use lzma or someting like that.
I can only suggest the method irfanbagus described (loadable kernel modules) because the source code Samsung released probably isn't up to date. The benefits of compiling the needed modules into the kernel are too little compared with possible bugs which are in the released code but not in the stock kernel.

i find relative new kernel for sgy, but still cannot make running. it's from galaxy pocket source. there is small change related to power management, but still don't have time to studying.
After a weekend full of trouble, today i found time to continue the bootimg-thing.
I now compiled only the modules and load them now with initd, because i was unable to build a runnable kernel from source.
(Thank you irfan and mikstev)

[Q] RIL Development sgh-t999

Hi everyone,
recently I have built and flashed on my sgh-t999 (galaxy S3 US tmobile version) CM11 Nightly. For my pro0ject however I need to modify two libraries of the Radio Interface Layer (RIL), libril.so and libreference-ril.so. I tried to modify the ones in the forlder /hardware/ril/ and build everything again with no results. Any change that I made to those files (such as ril.cpp in the folder libril) would not affect the functionality of the phone.
Finally yesterday I understood that when I build those libraries for the target cm-d2tmo-eng, those files that I have modified are not considered at all! When the libraries are built indeed, the system automatically takes the libril.so and libreference.so present in the vendor folder!
The problem is that those libraries in the vendor folder and already compiled and I cannot modify them. The question is:
Is there any way that I compile those libraries from the source code that I have modified?
Thanks,
brok85
Given that there is a unified D2LTE Build on CM, can you elaborate on what changes you wish to make to these libraries ?
To answer your question, You can do one of two things.
Grab the CM Source Code from the Device Tree of D2LTE. Make your relevant changes and check in the changes if they boot ok on your device. That way those changes will be included in future builds of CM and other Roms that use it.
If you do not wish to do so, then you will have to compile those libraries using C++ Compiler on a *NIX box and replace them in the Vendor folder.

Sorry but I am kind of new on this things. I have already downloaded the source code from the device tree and made my modifications in the files ril.cpp contained in [path-to-android-source]/hardware/ril/libril/ril.cpp. What I did was commenting the whole code within the function RIL_onUnsolicitedResponse() and listenCallback() such that in theory, the phone is not able to display incoming calls for example. However after flashing the re-built android I am still able to receve calls. How can I "check in the changes if they boot ok on my device"?

I tried to remove the libril.so in the vendor folder and compile again using
# . build/envsetup.sh
# lunch (and select d2tmo)
# mmm [path-to-android-source]/hardware/ril/libril".
The problem is that when I indicate the target after lunch, the compiler looks for the vendor libraries and stop the build. What I am doing wrong?
Sounds like Compiler Dependacy path is set different from the code base. I will look further before commenting.
For when your changes are for the benefit of the community of users, you check in the changed code back to the Device Tree with detailed comments within the code and while checking in.

Actually now I think I was able to compile the library following your instructions. Unfortunatly, when I have built and flashed everything in the galaxy S3, I was not able to use the network. Probably some compatibility issue?
When I compiled libril.so, I have obtained it from the folder /hardware/ril/libril which should contain google source code, maybe not compatibale with my device...is it right?

You know, silly question. But just so we can rule out. Did you at any point compiled the CM11 code as is and flashed to the phone ? How did Network behave ? Was everything ok ?
Galaxy S3 is a very open platform with standard hardware and chipsets. So the Default google code should work out of box with it. If you have network issues, then just for kicks you can flash a custom Kernel on top of your compiled CM 11. See how that goes.

The procedure I have followed is the following one:
1) Delete the llibril.so and libreference-ril.so from the vendor library. These are the pre-compiled vendor libraries that I need to modify.
2) commented the lines from the vendor-blobs.mk that were including those two precompiled libraries.
3) go to android/system/ and run "mmm /hardware/ril/libril" and "mmm /hardware/ril/reference-ril" to obtain the modified libril.so and libreference-ril.so respectively.
4) copied the new libraries just obtained in the vendor folder where the pre-compiled libraries were
5) re-include the lines commented in point 2).
6) run brunch d2tmo
7) flash the .zip obtained
Any mistake?

Unless I am having a brain fart that process seems about right. I wonder if your RIL changes are related to the network

It cannot even find the network operators. It says that it is impossible to connect and to try later...
mine is the Tmobile version of S3. May this influence?
That would depend on the changes you made. But otherwise not really. The underlying Device tree is unified for all US S3 devices.
