Nandroid restore issues... - myTouch 3G Slide Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is probably going to get confusing, but I'll try to keep everything clear...
I installed Chiefz 2.1 Build onto my Slide. I used it for a week, customized it, and then CM6 final was released on 8/28. I backed up my phone with nandroid, and then wiped the cache and data and flashed CM6.
I used CM6 for a week. I realized after a couple of days that I was not receiving google talk messages on my phone. If I logged into GMAIL and looked at CHATS, I would see all of the messages people were sending, and I just wasn't receiving them. I cleared GMAIL, and Google Talk cache on the phone, but this still didn't fix it.
I figured I'd post and see what people thought, but I just bought a new car which has bluetooth built in for calls and A2DP to stream music from my phone. I tried doing this on CM6 and it didn't work. I looked it up, and it is because bluetooth isn't supported in CM6. So, I backed up CM6 using nandroid, and then restored the backup I had done of Chiefz 2.1 build. Bluetooth works perfectly, but I still can't receive Google Talk messages. I cleared Talk, Gmail, and Gmail storage on the phone, but they still aren't being delivered. Also, peep is not updating...it keeps saying that my phone is refreshed, and if I refresh tweets it will say updated, but the last tweet I see is the last one I saw before I backed up using nandroid the first time...coincidentally it is Cyanogen saying that CM6 is done baking in the oven.
I cleared the cache for Peep, and it still wouldn't update. So, I booted back into nandroid this morning after 2 days of not receiving Google Talk or Twitter, wiped data and cache, and restored the backup again. Same issue still exists.
Why did this happen? I used nandroid backup so I wouldn't have to wipe, load fresh roms, and then customize all over again...

First, Peep isn't working for anybody. T-Mobile is working on it.
Second, your nandroid backup appears to be working just fine.

Google talk and tweet worked before the nandroid backup and restore, and both broke afterwards. Tweet appears to be a T-Mobile issue, and I'm trying to verify, at this point, that Google talk is as well. Otherwise, it is still a nandroid issue since that is the only change to my phone. Backup with nandroid, flashed a different rom, wipe, and restored with nandroid.

[Q] Flash Nandroid To Different Phone ??

Hello all,
My son's EVO will not send MMS. When he tries to send a text with photo, he gets a failure with "generic network failure". We have tried it with wifi, 3G, with Handcent and the stock messaging app. We can't find any other problems, just that, as far as we know.
He rooted the phone using this procedure:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-4g-rooting-roms-hacks/54844-guide-rooting-3-7-hboot2-02-w-screen-shots-1-27-2011-a.html
and everything seemed fine, so his ROM is sprintlovers but maybe one version back from the current one.
So finally to my question - Can I flash a nandroid from my EVO (Vaelpak ROM) to his phone? I just want to see if I can send an MMS from his phone using my system. I figure if not, at least we probably ruled out a problem with his ROM.
Advice appreciated !!
Not a good idea, too many different numbers and variables, things can get worse if you mix software/harware/firmare stuff from different phones. I think there are a lot of little differences in the guts. I would make a nandroid backup and flash another rom right on his phone. Can't hurt to try
Dont do it, you will mess things up worse. Titanium Backups, yes. Nandroid, no.
Seconded... Nandroids don't flash from phone to phone. But Titanium Backup, will do the trick. Also make sure your incoming message size is set to 1mb... Are you using stock messenging or handcent?
In the send/mms setting, I set my cache to the 5MB for evo only, on handcent, never had a problem. Also don't place your backup onto his phone, because it will cause problems. I would try the method I suggested, or flash the newest sprint lovers rom if that's what he likes.

OK, I'll scratch the nandroid swap thing. Glad I asked!
Tried with both messaging apps. I don't know what his message size limit is, but he has been unable to send OR receive text w/photos. I'll look into it more this evening after work...

Yes, tried with 3G and with WiFi, didn't work either time. Of course, we've pulled the battery, etc. etc.
Should we try something like wiping caches? Clear app data? I'm at a loss.

Yes auto-retrieve is on. His "connection settings" (messaging>settings) look different than mine. His were all blank, where mine showed values below each setting. He is able to edit his, so he made them match mine. Unfortunately it did not fix the problem. Funny thing is my connection settings show but can't be changed.
EVO on VaelPak
Update - we backed up, factory reset, wiped cache, and flashed the latest Vaelpak. MMS worked but he missed all the sense stuff, so we flashed Sprint Lovers. Things seemed to be working. He was messing with settings last night when his phone shut down from battery drain. So he charged all night. Phone stuck on white evo screen when booting this morning, even after battery pulls. We did get into recovery tho, so wiped caches and reflashed SL again. Things seem OK again, we'll see... I wonder if he hosed something up when he was going through the root process. If he keeps having issues I'm gonna go through the whole process again just to make sure there weren't any issues with it...

[Q] ARGH! PLEASE HELP! Gmail force close again

Process: com.google.android.gm NOT "gapp"
had an issue with it not syncing a few weeks ago...wound up wiping, using Titanium to restore everything that was on it. Made a nandroid thru CWM after it was confirmed everything was fine
NOTHING changed on my phone, from yesterday to today...it just started force closing out of the blue. Going to back to the Nandroid backup did nothing
My cache is 0.00kb (for those of you about to say 'clear cache in manage applications' lol)
I'm getting really sick of this happening, and losing things from weeks past in hopes of recovery.
FWIW, I had 3 gmails syncing. 2 worked fine, but the MAIN ('assigned' tot he phone) is the one that this keeps happening to. I can check, delete, and send emails from the other two, but now when I go to do anything in the primary, or switch between accounts it force closes. I removed those 'extra' accounts to no avail either
Any ideas?!?! (I have also wiped data in Titanium, which is what fixed it the last time.) I had issues on and off with Facebook force closing (I uninstalled it last week, before this happened)
Even re-installed before posting this, and when I did that I got the gmail force close (even though I wasn't syncing any contacts from gmail)
Silly Question:
Is there anything else to use for gmail, other than the gmail app? It seems to have more issues than it's worth. Which is extra annoying, since it is native to the phone/OS, down to it's very core lol

is your phone running on a customer "rom'? if so, what rom? i had that happened to me a couple of times and had to odin back and do the whole process all over. does your phone dialer work?
I get my gmail through the default email.apk. I have it set to receive from gmail, yahoo, hotmail and Roadrunner.

I kept saying to myself 'list ROM etc' and that's the one thing I left out lol
I'm on the ACS ICS
can I use multiple gmails with the email apk?it just seems so much slower than gmail
and yes,phone dialer still works
ok...try this, boot into cwm, do a factory reset in cwm, then install acs, do it twice and see what happens. before you installed acs, did you do a nandroid backup?
already 'fixed' it...
WIPED IT BACK TO COMPLETELY STOCK
re-rooted, re-installed ACS and then did the latest CWM nandroid back-up (12/23/2011)
Gmail works as does everything else
Now I'm updating everything that has updated since 12/23, and going to do a nandroid and Titanium back-up tonight
SUCH A PITA
I love the ROM, but this is the 2nd time in a month this has happened. Both times I had to take it back to stock, and start ALL over...
Have you tried switching to a third party app such as k9 mail? That has been my preference for a while now. It has tons of options, and I find it more capable than gmail or the stock email apk's.

CDMA one V not receiving text messages

Hi all, first post, I searched and searched and couldn't find anything, so I'm making a new post.
Ever since about a day ago, I haven't been getting sms messages. people have been saying they've been trying to text me all day, and I just sent myself a text thru email using @vmobl.com and I haven't gotten any texts. I used to get this problem with my old Optimus V on Virgin as well, and the way I would fix it is turning it off and removing the battery and all the texts would appear when I started the phone back up, but obviously the one v doesn't have a removable battery, so I can't quite do that. My notification light is going off, but the only thing I have in my notifications is voicemail, and it's never blinked for me before for that
I've tried restarting, turning it off and leaving it for 5 minutes, cycling airplane mode, and booting into cwm and erasing cache. It's a CDMA Virgin Mobile phone, running shubhamchamaria's non-sense ROM v1.1 I use ChompSMS for my main client, but I also have the AOSP messaging client installed which came with the ROM.
I'm probably going to make a nandroid and return to factory settings and see if that works, but I want to know if there's anything else I can try. Thanks!
EDIT: see final reply, I got the problem fixed by reflashing my nandroid of the factory settings, after that I flashed a new rom and texting still works. Thanks for reading everyone
hmm, i had that happen to me before but it fixed the problem after i cleared the cache. i have no idea if it will make a difference, but try Go SMS Pro...? i'm skeptical that it's the text app, though.

Thanks for the suggestions, clearing the cache didn't work, I cleared dalvik and regular caches, but still not getting messages. I did try GoSMS, but that didn't help either, I'm gonna try restoring to factory settings and see if that helps
I restored my phone to factory settings and it started receiving texts again, I've since flashed the paranoid android rom and it's still working just fine, thanks for reading everyone!

Switched to CM10, can't restore contacts

Ok so I've made the jump to CM10 after running Calk's ROMs since GB 1.1, then ICS since 1.0..
For some reason, every time I wipe, I have issues with my contacts. The numbers disappear from Google, and all that syncs is about 500 useless email addresses of everyone I've ever sent an email to. I have always been able to get the numbers back by restoring the "Contact Storage" data on TiBu. But for some reason it isn't working now.
I have tried three different backups, from three different versions with no luck. The very first time I tried it (with Contacts 4.0.3), the numbers showed up, I immediately tried to sync it, and the phone crashed and rebooted. When it restarted it did the "Android is upgrading" routine, and when I looked again the list is back empty. Nothing actually synced back to Google either. The phone list shows zero. I have tried all combinations of restoring the backups, Data only, App+Data, App only then data only, I even tried restoring the other Contacts app+data/etc.
I did at one point (during a prior wipe) export a vcf, but it turns out that only contained the same list of email addresses and no numbers. I never checked it because I didn't need it - I was always able to restore from TiBu.
Anyone have any ideas?
Yes, start storing ur numbers in Google instead of your phone. No matter what is flashed ur contacts will go with you when you enter your Google account info during setup.

While Titanium backup has recently introduced a feature to backup to xml. I have been using Super Backup to backup and restore my contacts, messages and call logs since I clean wipe and flash roms up to twice a day testing things.
Backing up the data for a system application and restoring it to another version is a nono. If I understand it correctly that seems to be what your doing? You mentioned trying VCF i think that is the format that Super Backup uses for one of the three things.

Assuming you have a nandroid backup, have you tried pulling them out of it using something like appextractor? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300311

It does work if you do it correctly....otherwise it wouldn't have been suggested. Anytime you store a number ur phone always asks if it should be stored in Google or you r phone....just pick Google and make sure your sync settings are correct. I have never lost a contact since my old HTC Hero days, thanks to that feature.

Well it was a good thought, but it did not work. Always made the backups, but never knew what you could do with them.. It still exhibits the same behavior - once it reboots it says 'contacts are updating', then all I get are the email addresses. I tried with several backups (BTW, any clue why two of the Nandroid folders are tagged Dec 31, 1999?) but it seems that it's a lost cause. Jellybean must have something different in the database than GB/ICS. I'm gonna have to hand key them all.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

I don't recall ever being prompted with that choice at any time during a ROM setup, or even when I first got the phone. It might've had to do with the fact that all my contacts were originally sent by bluetooth from my old phone. But I do have it set to sync with my Google account, and I made sure it sync'd before any wipe, so why are the numbers not in Google?

Hand key them all as in you have lost the ability to restore these on the android rom you backed them up on? Go back export them and then flash CM10 again. Its a lot quicker than typing even a small contact list. Unless Super Backup doesn't work on this CM10 rom.

Haha with all the time I've spent effing with it already I could've hand keyed the whole thing several times over.
In order to go to CM10 from Calk's ICS, I had to ODIN back to EL26 and flash CM from there.. So basically in order to go back to Calk's ICS I have to ODIN back and then flash to ICS, right? And then after I do the restore (assuming it works) and sync, back to EL26 again then flash to CM? (If I do that, I'll probably go with CM9 for now because 10 is a bit too buggy to be my daily driver, plus it's missing bluetooth music/AVRCP which is a must for me)
And do you have any idea why I can't get the damn numbers to sync with Google? Like I said before, I have sync turned on and have manually done it countless times, but it wont keep the numbers.

Question Does anybody use Google One for backups?

TL;DR Has anyone had issues backing up MMS using Google One and successfully fixed the issues? Mine randomly works whenever it wants to and then wipes itself out
I have been a Google One subscriber for a few years now and I have found that the backup piece of it doesn't work right with MMS. I have a case opened with G One support that is now about 1.5 years old and still they haven't fixed the issue. What I've seen is that MMS either doesn't backup at all or it will backup for a few days and then just randomly get wiped out during a subsequent backup.
I've gone through 3 different pixel phones, 3 OS updates and too many to count versions of G One, Drive, messages, play services, etc yet nothing seems to fix this.
Of course when I had posted on this forum about the 12L issues and eventually ended up performing a device wipe and then also used the Android online flash tool, I lost nearly a gig worth of MMS pictures. I was so pissed bc what I thought was happening, wasn't. I do always make a backup with SMS backup and restore app and still do have that database but I've found that restoring from that app ends up causing duplicates and weird corruptions (unless something has changed in the past year).
I had this case open with G One support and saw it was still open so I replied to it and let them know the issue was still happening after all this time and why hasn't it been fixed yet. They basically responded back with tier 1 troubleshooting steps I've performed a million times which by the luck of the draw, may or may not fix anything. If it does fix it, it works for like 2 or 3 days and then it's broken again anyway. This case is supposedly escalated and they have "reached out for updates" to the dev team but I've basically gotten zero useful info.
Does anyone else have this issue and have successfully fixed it on your own or somehow had Google fix it? If interested, I can list out all the troubleshooting steps I've done but essentially, the super troubleshooting step is a factory reset and I've also reloaded the OS completely. I've also deleted nearly all my text that had pictures in there (but after restore showed as a blank spot where a pic should be but nothing) just in case there is corrupt data anywhere. I now have about 25 or so pics that have come in to my messages since the last round of troubleshooting and again, randomly it backs them up showing the MMS database is like 70-90MB (as it's growing from new pics) and then randomly it'll wipe it out and I'm back down to under 200KB and that's where it stays until the next time it randomly works.
Very frustrating
Sounds weird but I never had that issue. Why don't you try a SMS back up tool?
I've had this issue extensively with Google One backups. It will say MMS is backed up, but never restores it. Or it only restores half of them or something like that.
I switched to Swift Backup and honestly it's 100% better. It's like an old TWRP backup. I've had to wipe my phone many times due to mess ups, but swift backup has helped me restore all my data.
I also talked to G One support, all they told me is to not restore data, then download the app on a fresh wipe, and restore a backup. But even then the app doesn't work like it's supposed to.

Thanks for the input. I downloaded Swift to see how that works out. I am still wanting G One to be fixed bc it's so nice to have everything all done "in house" but I'm at my whit's end with G One and it's terrible SMS/MMS backup. Everything else seems to backup and restore just fine. I just don't how Google can't code software to work with its own stuff correctly yet various 3rd party devs can do it.

Swift is pretty good because it can use that extra GOne storage to upload backups. I haven't had an issue with it yet. Reminds me of the old TWRP backups or Titanium Backups. I would love if GOne would work properly lol. I want to use it too. But it is just super unreliable with MMS specifically, and then some app data doesn't restore properly. Google not being able to have a backup solution as good as iCloud/iTunes is baffling to me too. But you can still use GOne but just don't backup SMS/MMS and use Swift for that. Unfortunate you have to use third party but this has worked really well for me.
I only got android one because I ran out of storage and couldn't do back ups iv not used mms in ages so couodnt tell but I did get a message saying about mms back up sorry not much help I mainly use WhatsApp to send pics and recently used rcs
Yes, I do and it makes me sad it doesn't work consistently
The thing about swift for me is when I restore my backed up messages, all my blocked spam gets restored too. Wish the devs would work out a workaround for that. Sounds silly I guess but it would be a pretty neat feature for swift.
