Hey all,
Noticed my battery level dropping pretty quickly even with SetCPU etc. underclocking my Desire when the screen is off. It seems it's the Suspend process using around 30% CPU for no reason. See screenshots attached.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
Thanks
Russ
It may be that System Panel itself is causing your issue.
See this thread.
Regards,
Dave
Having it simply installed would cause this? I don't usually leave the monitoring running unless I suspect something is up, that's the only reason it's running at the moment.

Probably not, but it may be skewing your results when you try to determine what's causing the problem. What about partial wake locks - is anything else keeping the phone from sleeping?
Regards,
Dave
Doesn't seem to be anything else. I'll keep an eye on it now that I have changed the priority setting on system panel.
It's definitely not SystemPanel. I have it and it's off and the suspend process is running wild.

Did you ever find out what was causing this? I'm finding the same thing on my phone twice this week.
turn off auto sync, toggle on off as needed, you can be running all sorts of data through system apps via 3G even when the phone is asleep/standby
Foxmeister had a point because suspend does show up as 10-30% consistent when you have hardware monitoring and logging enabled in many apps like System Panel.

this isnt it. i had my phone in airplane mode all night and the "suspend" process started running at 10% CPU from 10pm to 6am when the battery died. if airplane mode was on the whole time, no way its caused by data/network
I am having the same issue, airplane mode was on but suspend is acting crazy. This has been killing me since I've flashed the new update for evo 4g for my rooted phone. 30% sucking from process has left me charging my battery twice a day. Please help if anyone can!
same issue here.
EVO ... Froyo 2.2
suspend ... according to watchdog ... is regularly registering at over 50%...
if i reboot the phone .. it will take care of the issue for a few hours or maybe a day ...
I'm having this problem too. Rooted with Myn's Warm ROM. Someone at AF said it was the Facebook app. I'm uninstalling that now...
...any other ideas?
Same problem. Rooted evo king bfs #9 kernel
I have "always on data" un checked and noticed this... Maybe apps are trying to sync but have no network connection...
Was having same issue with rooted stock rom. Recently flashed to Vaelpak 2.2 and hasn't happened yet...
So this still happens to me once in a while. I found if I'm in an area where I can connect to wi-fi, the suspend process drops to 0, after connecting to wi-fi. Other than that only a reboot will "fix" it for a while.
Anyone else have any updates?
I raised the flag on this issue in early august for my stock 2.2 EVO. I was basically ignored back then, so now that others are experiencing this, perhaps we can get enough info to submit to HTC for a fix. If it's affecting the EVO and the Desire, it probably affects all 2.2 Sense UI androids.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=759301
I'm in the same boat... I never noticed this problem, until Sunday. Now I have had the problem 3 times in 4 days. Reboot fixed each time, but seems to be coming back more often now.
I'm running VaelPak 2.2... Maybe gamer83 is onto something with it being Sense related /shrug...Has anyone running CM noticed this issue?
I am experiencing abnormally high suspend cpu activity too. The strange thing is it behaves when I am connected to a wifi network. It goes to crap when I am away. Not sure if means anything, but when I am away I have 4G on.
Make sure to star this issue:

So i rooted my evo and installed a custom rom pretty much as soon as I had it out of the box. And then started installing apps. And i've pretty much NEVER had a fully charged battery last for a whole day even with very little to no usage of the phone.
A few days ago my friend also got an evo but hasn't rooted it or installed any apps yet. And he is easily getting TWO days or more out of a charge.
so i decided to do a full wipe of my phone, and what do you know, I'm suddenly getting 2 days out of the battery, maybe even a little more then 2 days.
Previously, i had setcpu installed as well as system panel. And i was never able to figure out what was draining the battery. When i looked in system panel the only thing that was using the cpu a little bit was system. Pretty much every other app listed was showing 0.1% of cpu usage.
So i'd like to know if there's a better method to figure out what's draining the battery. Do I have to install apps one at a time and wait a few hours/a day to see if the battery starts going down? or is there a better method?
thanks
I always check the awake time versus the time on. If the wake time is very high that means there is an app acting up.
What I'll do to investigate which app is I'll just go to the little stock battery report thing and look at what is using my battery.
Also, it should be noted that be wary of the facebook app. That thing is a complete and total battery hog. It was draining my battery from 20% over the course of an hour.
I was checking the stock battery report - it wasn't showing me anything useful when the battery was going dead.
right now i'm getting amazing battery life compared to before.
90 minutes since the phone was unplugged and it's only down to 96% and that's with me using it a bit. Previously, it would have been down to 85-80% by now.
I just have no clue at all what was causing the drain. I was hoping there was a better method other then installing apps one at a time until the battery starts draining to figure out the culprit.
There's an app called Watchdog and it monitors the background activity happening on your phone. If some seems to be getting out of hand it will notify you.
I had the same problem I installed Smobile security and it was KILLING my battery. Watchdog was able to tell what it was.
Hope this helps.
It looks like watchdog does basically the same thing that system panel does. and system panel wasn't showing me anything unusual. System panel shows the cpu usage of apps - and none of my apps were showing high cpu usage.
I guess there's really no app that can actually show you the battery usage per app - it can only show you the cpu usage.
You can try SpareParts from the Market,it may help you see if you have a wakelock issue of some kind and its free so no harm if it doesn't help.

actually, the rom i am using already has spareparts in it. I'm not sure what you mean by wakelock though. How do i determine that? What is it?
Hey guys,
This has been bothering me for a while now, but on occasion, my phone just stops sleeping. I attached a screen shot to show what I mean.
It happened on stock, so I've tried a couple other kernels, but they have the same problem.
Any suggestions?

Yes, probably you're experiencing the "AndroidOS" runaway issue. This is a nebulous and currently unresolvable issue, probably related to some Samsung/Sprint driver issue(s) causing feedback loops between the events/0 and suspend processes. It seems to be fixed temporarily by a reboot, or just randomly. It may or may not be associated with excessive battery usage.
I used to get those solid awakes, but then I froze a lot of apps and it went away.
I didn't do it systematically to figure out which was the cause.
As an aside, if you have an older version of FlightView, then that could definitely cause the issue. That isn't a stock app, but is somewhat popular and had a bug keeping the phone awake *even though it wasn't configured to do anything*.

Ironically, my AndroidOS has always been high (almost always higher than display), but it would always sleep just fine, and my battery-life was pretty good. But every time this happens, my AndroidOS is actually lower than usual.
So I've temporarily disabled Juice Defender (just in case it was interrupting something and confusing it into holding a wake lock) and removed the Facebook widget (Better Battery Stats had that listed as 50% of the wakeup events, which is just ridiculous).
I set a custom reference point so I can watch it for a while and see if anything weird pops up. It seems to be happening more often in the last week or so, and the only thing I did back then was remove Watchdog, because I haven't gotten any alerts for about a month.
I have noticed that usually when it gets stuck in an awake state for a long time, it also coincidentally has a stealth LOS, and rebooting will magically cause texts and voicemails to appear. Let's hope the December radio update fixes that problem.
Is anybody else having issues with their ET going to sleep and you have to pull the battery to get it come back up? I thought it might have been my setcpu settings. So I cleared them and uninstalled it. I tried the midnight rom and the starburst rom. I tried the stable and exp LosKernel. None of these got rid of this issue for me. Randomly through out the day I can try to wake the phone up to use it and nothing happens. After a minute or two I have to pull the battery. I am currently testing the stock kernel.
Thats weird, the only time that happened to me was when i had setcpu, and i tried putting "screen off" value to 200/200.
You should install setcpu again, and make screen off value 500/500, and if you dont have the issue, then try making the value 200/500, if you dont have the issue at this value, then leave it as is.

I agree it is weird and I am not sure why it is happening. If it stays okay with the stock kernel then I may wipe and try the viperrom.
Yep happened twice the other day... Im on stock rom with lost kernel..roooted i put setcpu to 200/1200 after waking my screen for a minute used google came back 3 min later and phone was either off or wouldnt wake .. I had to pull battery twice.
I setcpu up to 1200/1200 never happened again.
This is a nice phone but very touchy.. Seems alot weird things goin on for some Et users.
Worst of all for this phone is Los or just weak /radio signal in general ..which is a samsung issue.

Why people still insist on screen off profiles amazes me. When you hit the power button to wake it - the phone is stuck at 200MHz, you do realize this? If snything else is going on while it's stuck at 200 or SetCPU doesn't sample the phones state fast enough, it never gets out of 200MHz and locks up. Just like any other processor does when you overload it.
All the background processes going on even when the screen is off and somebody thinks setting the CPU max to 200MHz is a good idea? That's just asking for it. Not to mention the screen off profile is known to cause this issue. Notice how Virtuous, Viper, Cyanogen, and many other developers don't use one in their native OC daemons? There's a reason why. The phone sleeps just fine without it, just let it do it's thing.
Don't use offscreen profiles (the kernel is smart enough) and avoid using task killers, as those are likely to be the second leading issue.
I am having the issue even with setcpu uninstalled. I still have not found out what is causing it.

Just wanted to throw this out there: beware mislabeling this problem. The setcpu issue causing the phone the permanently lock up and require a bat pull is one issue, yes; slow screen wake up is a different issue. Sometimes if you hit the power button, the screen will not wake up on the first try. If you wait a few seconds and push in the button again for a second or so, the screen almost always will come after. Coming from a mo-pho, I actually had the stupid no-wake problem requiring bat pulls, so I'm extremely paranoid about by e4gt doing this -- but it really has been good about eventually waking up every single time...just try my instructions and see if it works for you, too.
Again, though -- setcpu issues may be a different problem entirely.
did you reinstall a rom and try it again or did you simply just unistall setcpu and try it. I say this because I had an issue when testing setcpu and my system still kept my cpu setting even after I unistalled the app. I had to reinstall the rom after wiping to get it to run properly again.
I think I have found the issue. I did a factory reset and installed the rom but I am getting an error now that is basically saying it can't read the internal storage card. So I think there are some actual hardware issues going on that need to be looked at by sprint.
how often has the sod been happening? I think i got it yesterday, but not sure.
Do you use setcpu?

This thread seems a little slow- has there been a solution found or are we isolated cases?
I reflashed the phone back to rooted stock and then flashed Blazer 4.1.
Got 2 SODs in the past week- one just a few minutes ago.
I tried calling the phone from another line, it rings but the screen is black and thus I couldn't answer it.
Power button and vol buttons work fine.
I had to powerdown and reboot.
Getting kinda frustating.
hey,
so im having some kind of trouble with my HOX.. when its just sitting on my desk it wakes itself up every now and then, sometimes very frequently and sometimes not.. with no specific pattern.. when im working on my laptop i just notice the screen turns itself on and then goes back to sleep.. i dunno whats causing it and its starting to get really annoying!! it's been happening for 2 days now, im running viperX 2.. any ideas on what may be causing this?
PS. i didnt install anything or change any settings before this started to happen
thanks in advance

Same issu here... I think that all custom roms has this problem... But I was told that could be a recovery problem(because it also wakes up when charging) so I'm using AOKP(v1.2 AWESOME battery life now) with TWRP recovery (I was using CWM)... Tonight I'm gonna check if it still waking up itself.
The recovery has little to do with the running ROM. Clockworkmod switches on the phone when nearly charged.
The phone waling and screen.coming on is much more likely to be a rogue app.

try a fresh install performing full wipe, clearing cache and dalvik cache and also use fastboot erase cache command before flashing boot img
i am also on viper 2.01 and don't have any such problems
There is no way...
I just tried everything..
With any custom rom and custom recovery, the phone wake up itself when charging off...
Only with the stock rom and oficial recovery it works Ok. Hope they find a solution..
I noticed there is some kind of pattern, the screen all of a sudden starts to turn itself on and off slowly and then faster and then it reaches a point where it stays on for about 10 seconds and then goes back off for a while.. it's very strange !! i've been using viperX for a long time and this never happened... at first i thought it was the productivity lockscreen notifying me of new emails or smth but that wasnt it... i only have google apps, xda app, facebook and chrome.. could it be one of these?? maybe its an app that uses internet because i noticed it happens much less or sometimes doesnt happen at all when i turn wifi off
task killer or smart stay ex
Had happened to me last evening. Random auto wakeup, first the touch buttons lightup and then
the screen. Then it goes to sleep on its own and then wakeup again. At first I thought it was related
to motion sensor because it always managed to coincide when I started typing in my laptop. But later
I noticed it wasn't the case as I was away from the table when it reached a very fast frequency
similar to notification LED,flashing sleeping flashing sleeping.... then complete sleep.
Went in task manager in search of rouge app, found "HTC Hub","Google Search","Google Play"
and a few other were constantly being slaughtered by the "Android Task Killer Free".
Exited the "Android Task Manager Free" and the auto wakeup has completely disappeared since then.
I also closed smart stay EX, which might have been the culprit as well since I have got dust in my front
camera and those might be recognized as faces or eyes?
I suggest you check for stray apps or task killers.
Make sure that none of the apps(background) crashing or being killed.
I believe custom roms try to enhance the performance by limiting the minimum
memory balance before which background inactive apps are killed by android.
Might be the cause but not quite sure.
So thats that, worth a try. Go to [Apps-->Running] and check if some app is disappearing and reappearing
on its own. Force stop it. Reboot the phone. Avoid any memory tweaking and task killer,
android is smart enough to know when to kill and when to keep apps.
Note: I am running a stock 4.0.3(1.29), no unlock, rooting etc...
Good luck

That worked !! but in a different way, i have no task killers and the ROM did not kill apps before because it didnt use to happen until recently, but i tried to clean up my phone and uninstalled some apps and it stopped since then, problem is i uninstalled them all at once so i dont know which app exactly was the cause but sure it was one of 'em.. maybe it got corrupted and started crashing in the background or something because i didnt install any apps recently... this didnt happen not even once since i cleaned up those apps.. thanx a lot for helping
So the root cause could be thee Apps that has permissions to wack/prevent (android.permission.WAKE_LOCK) your devices from sleeping..
I experienced it occasionally while 'smart stay EX' was on beta time..

I recommend installing "Wakelock detector" which shows statistics of WAKE_LOCK usage !!
