get phone back to s-on - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been having random reboot problems for weeks and no matter what I try I cant get it to stop. So I have tried to get back to unrooted stock so i can return. I have unrooted 2.2 on my device now, but i have s-off. From what I have heard I need s-on in order to return it.
Can anyone help me on this ?
I had hoped that going back to stock ROM's would stop the rebooting, but it has not. I still get the random reboots. sometimes it reboots a few times and then goes dead on me. I have to remove the battery and sd card to just get it to turn back on again... ugh
Hank

Guess you never read Unrevoked when they said that S-OFF is permanent for the time being and that they didn't know if they would be able to turn it back on. Your best bet is to say you lost it file a lost/stolen report with the police pay the insurance deductible get the new phone and sell the old one with bad ESN for sprint.

I just reflashed 2.1 via the first step of the how to root 2.2 method by regaw. 2.1 was always much more stable for me. it was when i went to 2.2 that i started having all the issues. and I thought that you could go s-on with 2.1 using the latest unrevoked. but i could have read that wrong.

I just looked at there site and it looks like I was wrong they have a S-on tool now
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever

yeah, i read that. i dont see where it says how to turn it back to s-on though. only really talks about s-off. it does say there is a tool to turn back on. i assume that is in the custom recovery somewhere ?

So if there's an S-ON now, what's to stop HTC from incorporating that in their next OTA?

Nothing.

HTC totally knew how to S-ON this whole time. They built the damn thing.
The UnrEVOked team mentions this in the link posted above. If they DID S-ON everyone it would break every phone that's legitimately S-OFF for testing purposes.

It may enable the security but it won't break them by any means, they could easily leave a backdoor on their devices that would allow it to be disabled again

[Q] Sending Incredible back to Veri.but rooted

I'm sending my Incredible back to Verizon for a new Inc. but I'm rooted with the new update. Want should I do so they don't know I rooted this phone. OK just check my phone I guest when I did the official update it unrooted me. I' still S-OOF. But I got to go back to original stock before I sent the phone back my phone should get to me in 2 days. So I need to put back 2.1 and S-ON.
Have you done unrevoked forever and turned off the S-off, if so you should probably not send it in.
The best thing you can do is look for the stock 2.0 firmware. Also look on YouTube for a unroot video. I have unrooted and re-rooted this phone so it can be done.
Sent from my Rooted Droid Incredible
I'm S-OOF right know. So I should go back to S-ON and try to find 2.0 rom. Where can I find the right programs to this before 2 days.
I'll help you out.
It does NOT matter if you send the phone back with 2.1 or 2.2, they don't care.
They care about two things you need to worry about.
turning it back to S-ON
and having the stock recovery.
to achieve this. You MUST be rooted to do S-OFF or S-ON, so first off get rooted if your not. Then visit unrevoked
the unrevoked3 is for root, unrevoked forever is S-ON, S-OFF.
once you are rooted, follow the instructions to turn it back to S-ON. **(the same exact way you turned it to S-OFF, but using the new S-ON file.)**
Once this is completed now you will have S-ON, but you are still rooted, and have the ClockworkMod recovery. You need to un-root by downgrading using the 2.1 OR 2.2 RUU. your pick and like mentioned above. don't matteh. This will get you to have the stock recovery, and S-ON. Go in that order. Hope you get it. Peace.
If your S-OFF then you are screwed. There is no way to turn it back on. You are SOL man. You can always restore it to factory but the S-OFF will ALWAYS remain

Also your phone has all the programs you need. You just news to put them all in the root of your SD card and reboot into hboot

Unless there has been a break though in getting HTC's and Verizon's super secret security code then I doubt it. The reason its called unrevoked forever is because there is no way to turn it back on. Check other posts in the xda to prove my point. If you return a S-off phone you will void the return and have to pay full price for the new one.

FYI unrevoked forever 1.1 was released last week allowing us to return to s-on.
Also, the reason its called forever is because it forever allows our phones to truly be ours, unlocked and how it should be.

Assuming that to be true why would unrEVoked be offering a package called unrevoked-forever-son?
They SPECIFICALLY provide it in case you need to go BACK TO S-ON....
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How can this be removed or undone if I need to take my phone in for service?
A: Download the latest ''S-ON'' tool to a temporary location and follow the installation instructions above to run it. Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update

Download S-ON file from unrEVOked's website and run that so that you get S-ON back onto the phone.
Then download either the 2.1 or 2.2 RUU (find them in the Android Development Section) and run that and it will wipe the phone and bring it back to factory state.
If it says your phone is not found when using the RUU, try downloading the HTC Sync software for the Incredible and installing that first. You need the drivers for "MY HTC" on the computer for the RUU to recognize it and HTC Sync will install that for you. I had that issue, but remedied it with the HTC Sync software install first.

[Q] confused with s-on/off....

So I will be unrooting my phone tonight so I can take it to sprint tomorrow. Before I do the unroot can someome please clear some confusion up for me? Ok so I rooted with 3.21 the other day. I have read and watched the video by djr3z regarding the unroot in 2 steps. I know he says you need to use the s-on tool only if you used UR forever... which i did not use. As I read on further, people were saying sometimes the boot loader says s-off even though it is not off which mine is s-off. So I noticed that guide was posted on the 12th prior to 3.21 being released so I'm not sure if anything changed. So my sort but sweet question is do I need to apply the s-on zip prior to actually unrooting? Sorry for so much crap but i have been searching and can't get a precise answer..Anyways anyone who can clear this up for me would be the man or woman! As always THANKS!
Maybe I should have put this in the general section.. oops.

Flash the s-on file. It might still say s-off on your boot screen, but after you flash the rom it should then say s-on. So in short, yes, use the s-on file.

Sorry man I had a brain fart and accidentally posted it here. Once I realized it was already too late. I'll pay more attention next time!
I'm afraid you might be still slightly confused. the S-off you're seeing is more likely part of the ENG Bootloader instead of the same as the unrevoked s-off
both do the same thing, but the eng bootloader needs to be replaced for the s-on to re-appear.
That's initially what I was thinking too since I installed Unrevoked 3.21 NOT Unrevoked forever. Installing the s-on just for ****s and giggles wouldn't hurt anything right? I just don't want to unroot and then realize it still has s-off, then have to re root and start over. Any thoughts?
no, it shouldnt hurt anything. Just might not solve your problem if its the bootloader that is s-off

[Q] Can I still go back to stock?

Is there an updated resource thread for returning the phone entirely to stock? I'm running Skyraider 3.5, incredikernel 2.6.32.27, 2.15.00.11.19 radio, and an updated HBOOT with CWM; all on a launch Inc; and would like to return to complete stock with the most recent updates.
Also, what does a "clean ESN" mean?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as search hasn't yielded anything recent. Thanks.

I can answer this part of your question.
The ESN is the Electronic Serial Number that is tied to your phone. If one has a "bad" ESN, that means Verizon has flagged that phone as either stolen, or delinquent with billing or some other circumstance. Therefore, if someone was to buy it, Verizon would refuse to activate it. However, it is possible another carrier would activate it, if it were able to be flashed over.
A "clean" ESN means all is well, and that it is all gravy to be activated on the Verizon network.
Hope that helps.
You can go back to stock, just requires flashing the RUU file you can find at www.dougpiston.com
Clean ESN means that the phone can be re-activated on another account. As far as I know, your phones ESN should be fine unless its been reported stolen or your account isn't current. Should be able to Google ESN for more info.

How did you do it?
I had it rooted and had problems with a rom so I flashed a factory rom back on it and it updated to the GB OTA but I never turned the s-on. Of course that was before I knew we couldn't get a working root. I have tried everything possible I can think of to get it rooted again. This is why I said if need be I would send to a dev to see what they can do with it since it does have s-off.

That's like bragging that I can get into my apartment. Sure, I have a key to the door, which helps.
If you were S-OFF before GB, there's no problem. If you weren't S-OFF and you updated, there's no solution yet.

Going to the Sprint store tomorrow

To get charging port and home button fixed. I have insurance and my phone is rooted. They have to repair it right? I remember reading on here that rooted phones can be worked on by sprint employees now. True, correct?
Wrong. My friend is a tech at the local Sprint Store and I asked her about that. Her answer was hysterical laughing.
You may want to try and flash a Stock Rom first.
I thought they had to repair them now?
Sorry, you thought wrong.
So should I just unroot and take it in? I don't mind. I think when I took it in last time the rep said he couldnt fix it cuz it was rooted and it was the charging port that tiem too.
You can. I just keep my stock/rooted setup in a Nandroid, in case that ever happens ,so I can roll back to Stock without unrooting. I don't think they'd check for S-off, but you never know
Ill just unroot. I can use djrez's method to unroot if my bootloader doesnt say revolutionary at the top right? I am pretty sure i used unrevoked forever to unroot.

If you used unrevoked then you can just flash s-on & RUU. You may have to downgrade your radio to get the s-on zip to work.
If you're taking it in for a bad usb port, they'll most likely replace it instead of trying to fix it.

If the issue has nothing to do with being rooted, why would it matter? If a phone comes into my service center with software issues that's rooted, then yes it pertains to the issue. Digitizer out? Root has nothing to do with it. I leave it the way it is and repair.
