[Q] Help with failed HTC Desire root using unrevoked - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ola,
I tried to use the following instructions to root my desire, which is using android 2.1 and bootloader .83.
I used the easy method in a linux live cd. from the htcdesire site.
It hung on the screen that said "Checking for root files" and stayed there for about an hour. I never got the success message.
I had the recovery manager on the phone screen, so I selected reboot, and the phone came back fine.
I tried using unrevoked again and had the same issue.
So I am not entirely sure if I am rooted or not. I am assuming not, since I do not have a superuser app in my listing of phone applications.
Anyone have a solution to this issue?
Thanks!
MW

I think you missed root permissions. A 100% safe way:
Get an Ubuntu live cd (you can use any as long as sudo or su works there), extract unrevoked, then run the following commands in the terminal:
cd /path/to/unrevoked
chmod +x reflash
sudo ./reflash
If it asks you for a password, use "ubuntu" or "root". Unrevoked should start working.

This happened to me with my Desire as well. It turns out I was rooted.
Try turning your phone off, then hold the power and volume down buttons, then once you reach the boot screen, go ahead and select recovery. If you've successfully rooted your device, you should now be in whichever recovery mod you used unrEVOked to flash. For me, it was ClockWorkMod.
Go ahead and start following some custom ROM guides!

I do have the clockwork recovery mod on the phone, but when I tried to install titanium backup, it told me I do not have root permissions.
The tip with chmod'ing the flash file also did not work. I still get the same error.
Thanks

If you have clockwork mod, then flash any rooted rom from here. I recommend Pinky Desire, Neophyte mod or LeeDroid. These are my favorites, though, you can choose any you like

I tried what you suggested, but the install failed due to not having root permissions, which hearkens back to unrevoked not working correctly.

I ran it in linux the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth time I attempted to root the phone. Each time the process gets stuck on 'checking for root files', and hangs indefinitely.
Clockwork mod was installed, but the phone was not rooted.
Clockwork requires the phone to be rooted in order to flash roms.
I'll try unrevoked again tonight, but I am not expecting a different result.
Maybe this is a bug that will be dealt with in a future release.

This is very strange. If it has written ClockworkMod to your recovery partition, wether the ROM currently installed is rooted or not shouldnt have anything to say. You ARE trying to flash the zip from Clockwork Recovery by entering the bootloader when booting the phone, and not trough ROM Manager or similar? Sory for asking, but the thing some people does...
It would help to know what guide you have followed "the htcdesire site" isnæt really telling me anything.

Have you tried re-downloading it? Maybe the files inside are corrupt

Thanks for the assistance.
I haven't had a chance to re-do the unrevoked again yet. if it should work with clockwork on, then it is likely a file corruption issue as you mentioned. I'll try again and report back.
myhtcdesire.com/modding/how-to-root-your-desire-easily-method-1 is the rooting method I used and will try using the same method again.

Success.
Looks like it was a corrupted clockworkmod issue.
Thanks for all your help

Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?
I am on the original HTC_Desire_Android_2.3_Upgrade rom downloaded from HTC development
I have tried the Windows method to root my phone with unrevoked.
When I run unrevoked it follows the following cycle:
unrevoked3 app: Pushing recovery
unrevoked3 app: Installing unrevoked services
Phone: Rebooting phone...
unrevoked3 app: Wait for bootloader
unrevoked3 app: Running pre-boot sequence
Phone: Reboot phone
unrevoked3 app: Waiting for reboot
Phone: Phone reboots to normal, not to bootloader. I do not know if this is correct
unrevoked3 app: Waiting for system to settle (might be a minute)
unrevoked3 app: Running root...
After awhile (on screen I have to enter pin for sim card but I do nothing)
unrevoked3 app: Error: failed to get root. Is yuor firmware too new?
Phone: Reboot phone
Could somebody tell me what is wrong and how to solve it?

with the gingerbread ruu u need http://revolutionary.io/ to make it s-off and then allow root
here a complete guide http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/index.php/HTC_Desire

So first I have to s-off the device first and after that run the unrevoked app?

After s-off it will also install a CWM recovery, so u can simply flash from the recovery the super user zip contained in the guide above (or alternative if u want change ur rom, directly flash one of the rooted roms from the dev section )
Unrevoked is not needed anymore, run revolutionary is very simple, fast and stable

Will try that! Keep you posted.

Thank you it worked very well!!!!
One question left: Now I can install ClockWork again so I can download roms and install them. ClockWorks has it's own bootloader right? Will this be a problem? Do I have to flash the clockwork mod?

As far as I know ckockworkmod (cwm) does not have its own bootloader, because it's a recovery. After running revolutionary successfully, you can just boot into cwm from bootloader. Or flash every you want from fastboot.

Can't pass HTC screen

Guys i have a question regarding the htc splash screen. I rooted twice today just to test a few things.
When i rooted for the first time i used windows 7 + hboot drivers from unrevoked3 site and flashed/rooted my device (stock rom (froyo)). Everything worked fine but when i run clockwork recovery mode and select the backup option i get something strange.
My device is backing up and it says it's done, when i select the reboot option my device get stuck at the splash screen and reboots, hangs, reboots, hangs, reboots etc. I need to pull the batteries off to get back in recovery mode. This time i select restore and select the backup i created before all this happend. Now it's passing the htc splash screen.
Because i thought i got problems with the windows drivers i decided to root with linux, so i installed the official ruu update over my rooted rom and root it under linux to make sure i am a bit saver.
Now when i do a backup and reboot again i get the same thing ? it hangs at the splash screen. Is the unrevoked recovery tool bugged (clockworkmod) ??? because when i restore with the backup i created it is passing the htc splash screen again.
I don't understand.
(Sorry for my bad English)
PS: I used this rom to root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=828519
As far as i know you need to root only once..i guess rooting again n again may hav messed wid phone..nt sure though..wait for a reply from someone who is experienced..i hav been using android since past 3 months only

What you could try is this.
Use unrevoked again, but in unrevoked select a alternative recovery image.
Then load this image http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839621
This is the amon-ra recovery. And for the record, you can root with unrevoked as many times as you want
Btw, you are sure that you waited long enough? If you restored a nandbackup, booting the phone can take 5-10 minutes
Oo..i thght it is similiar to jail breaking tht needs to be done onl once...lolzz

You really didnt read well didnt you ? it already happend the first time i rooted . Secondly, if i root and install a official ruu update over it everything will get wiped and cleaned....so there would be no problems when i decide to root.

Yeah i am sure....after backup the phone showed me the menu screen that i could select options such as rebooting the phone. When i reboot after backup it doesnt get passed the splash screen and reboots (and those steps gets repeated). If i don't use recover....my phone is dead
- Flash a stock ruu (rom)
- Then root again and use amon ra.

This seems to be a documented problem with Unrevoked. The first reboot after rooting and backing up Nandroid seems to hang the system for some, and restoring the Nandroid fixes it. After restoring the Nandroid (as you did) there should be no further problems. And since you did that, your problem should have been fixed. And since you restored to a rooted copy, why did you have to try again with Linux? Your problem was already fixed by the Nandroid Restore..

Thought the 1st Nandroid Restore fixes it..Does Clockwork mod still pose probs?
Clockwork Mod is the issue - flash AmonRA from the start and you won't have this issue (or I never have anyway, use AmonRA as you can partition SD cards in it)
I have the same issue can't pass htc screen and with 2 black lines.
I will flash RUU then root by unrEVOked. My question is how to flash/install AmonRA, do i have to flash using Clockwork will it override my recovery? Sorry guys noob question...

I didn't have 2 black lines, mine rebooted after it couldnt pass HTC splash...i needed to remove battery or it keeps rebooting.
What i did with clockworkmod is restore (the backup you created before rebooting)....this should fix the problem. If this is not the case then i don't know because i never rooted before. You should ask a expert.
Anyway because i needed to restore anytime i posted this topic, people said i should use AmonRA. So to do this i installed the latest official ruu (posted by EddyOS) (to make sure everything is clean and good again). Then i used linux to make sure it is saver.
When you downloaded the unrevoked3 tool open it and don't plug you phone yet, go to options and select custom recovery. Now select the AmonRA (latest version i used) to flash with unrevoked3. Now plug in your phone and relax.
The only thing i am scared off is to flash hboot to go s-off.
Actually the cause of this problem was when i have tried the method for s-off...sad...
When i run unrEVOked it says this thing....
Device "/sbin/sh:getprop: not found
"is not supported at this time.

[Q] Flashing Clockwork Mod

I have looked in the other forums for help with this but was unable to find anything related to my problem.
I am trying to install the clockwork mod recovery in recovery mode on my HTC desire as installing it from the market does not seem to work. I just install it and my recovery mode is still android system recovery 3e, not clockwork recovery like I should be getting.
So i got the clockwork recover zip file.. put it on my SD card and am attempting to install it myself in recovery mode. With apply SDcard:Update.zip
Now when I do it the install starts as it should then it fails to verify while-file signature and aborts the installation.
Any help would be great.
Your phone must me Rooted an S-OFF to install recovery in a way like that.
Unless you don't have those requirements, try unrEVOked to flash clockworkmod.
Hi,
Are you trying to also root and install a custom ROM ? or sticking with the Desire ROM as supplied by the carrier.
If you want root etc. then have a look at:
http://unrevoked.com/
It'll root and install ClockworkMod.
Ah that will explain it..
The problem I am having is I am unable to sucessfully root my phone using Unrevoked it keeps failing when it reboots the phone. I thought if i could manully install clockwork mod it would work. I guess I was Wrong.

Use unrEVOked 3.21 (not latest on their site - if that's a no go) - that's working for the most people. And make sure you have installed the HBOOT drivers correctly!!! (check android developement forum for that).
Tired using a verison of 3.21 and it did not work either.. It was unable to get past the NAND lock.. it would install the root say sucess then say error failure to unlock NAND flash..

[Q] Clockworkmod Recovery 3.0.0.6 mod please Close

Question.... i rooted my phone using unrevoked and installed 2.5.0.1 but now i want to use the 3.0.0.6 i have it downlaoded and on the sd card of my phone and i ran it in recovry and it loads fine how ever when i restart my phone the recovery keeps reverting to 2.5.0.1
could someone just tell me where im going wrong with this XD
cheers the only thing i can think of doing is instaling a RUU then rerooting with a img of 3.0.0.6
Cheers
Hi there,
Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901503
Well i have tryed to use unrevoked to flash the img file and it always passes the first reboot how ever it always eather failes with a communications error or it sits on waiting for system to settle. and after a reboot it still running the old clockworkmod recovery
I,ve managed to successfully go through the whole Unrevoked process, selecting custom image, yet I still have the old cwm recovery
Unless I run update. Zip. Or start. Recovery from rom manager I'm still using the old version. Is there something we are doing wrong or is there another method
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
I have succesfully flashed it with unrevoked. Downloaded it from here http://mirror.kanged.net/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.6-buzz.img
However first time it stucks at htc logo and then unrevoked says "waiting for root (safe to reboot if not working)" or something similar, so i disconected phone, pulled battery, booted and stared all again. This time everything went fine.
Only problem was that rom manager was still saying that im on 2.5.0.1, so downloaded this http://mirror1.kanged.net/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.6-buzz.zip and copied into sdcard\clockworkmod\download\mirror1.kanged.net\recoveries\ and deleted the old one from this path.
Hope it helped...
Finally managed to flash cwm 3.0.0.6 using Unrevoked 3.14. Unrevoked 3.2xx just didnt seem to work at all for me. Recovery is now a joy to use, and performing nandroid backups seems much faster
Sorry for the stupid question, but where can i get version 3.14? when i go to unrevoced.com i can only get version 3.32 wich says "Device Wildfire not supported".
Strange because I've rooted my Wildfire on this PC with unrevoked, so all Drivers are installed and it should work. I think it's a problem with the new version.
thanks in advance
Can't remember where I found it, but I still have it. I'll upload it later
After instal recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.6-buzz.img tru Unrevoked v3.14 there is problem with ROM CyanogenMod V7.0.0-RC2 superuser dont work i need to flash back with RUU_Buzz_HTC_WWE_1.14.405.2_R_C_Radio_13.45.55.24_3.35.15.19_release_141106_signed.exe then again run Unrevoked v3.2 and after that do restore with 2.5.1

You can't update recovery from ROM Manager. We don't have s-off.
Edit: In fact I'm not sure if ROM Manager can do it even with s-off.
My rom manager recovery is 3.0.0.6
I have described few posts back how i manage to do it.
And i also have fake recovery 2.5.0.1 i some zips have amend script and i dont have time to convert it.

I meant, you can't permanently flash your recovery via ROM Manager. For that you need to use a reflash tool (Unrevoked for us) or use fastboot if you have s-off.
Oh, that, right. Sorry, my mistake.

[Resolved] Changing recovery issue

Hi there,
Today, I wanted to change my Amon-ra 2.0.0 recovery to version 2.0.1, because I read somewhere that nandroid backups would fail. And it failed once...
I launched Unrevoked, then I switched the recovery, and started the process. It went right until I got stuck at HTC logo. I had to reboot via the 3 keys combination. Once rebooted normally, I went to the recovery, and the version installed hadn't changed.
Is there any other solution to get this recovery flashed, in order to be able to perform a backup and flash the new RCMixHD 3.4.1 with A2SD+
Thanks !
Yes, but you need to be S-Off for that - the fastboot method.
So the only way to change my recovery is to s-off my phone ?
Also, I forgot to mention that I tried to flash it with Terminal emulator, with the command :
Code:
su
flash_image recovery
and I got error message stating I was running out of memory, and the process couldn't end properly.
Becasue you can not modify the NAND while in boot (S-ON).
Try unrevoked 3.21 with the RA Custom image you downloaded.
That's what I did previously, but it didn't work... I'll try later when I'll be back from college...
Use fastboot or revoked method.....

unroot then run unrevoked again with newest amon ra chosen as recovery
I did this today
First u need S-off if u want to flash another rec., easiest way.
Just go to http://alpharev.nl/ download the Iso Utility,do like the instructions say, burn it,and boot it.Turn UsbDebbuging on,plug the phone and follow 3 ez steps.
After i recomend this tool for flashing the new recovery, takes 2seconds http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=823315
Thank you all, i'll try this after the champions league match. Is there any risks with s-off ? Was it safe and painless ?

Yeah, that was necessary
BTW, you can brick your phone if you are not careful with the S-OFF procedure.

When do I run the Revolutionary pre4 file?
You shouldnt have to run a file. Just start up the program, plug your phone in with USB debugging on and let it do its thing.
Are you saying I don't need to run fastboot?
I D/L'd the pre3 file, plugged in my phone with USB debugging on, it just says "waiting for device".
What do I need to do BEFORE running the Revolution pre3 program?

I think from what times said it has to be pre 2. And You cant mount the sd card. And you need to have the right HTC drivers installed
You also have to have fastboot turned off which is under power.

I've been reading the forums for awhile waiting for s-off to be achieved and I just want to verify that this process will just simply root my stock 2.3.3. I don't want to flash a new ROM, I'm happy with the stock experience but I just want to be able to use Titanium Backup and freeze programs as I see fit like I did on my Fascinate.
Will this indeed just put SU/root into my stock without having to flash a new ROM?

I've been reading the forums for awhile waiting for s-off to be achieved and I just want to verify that this process will just simply root my stock 2.3.3. I don't want to flash a new ROM, I'm happy with the stock experience but I just want to be able to use Titanium Backup and freeze programs as I see fit like I did on my Fascinate.

No but it does get you started down that road. This will give you S-Off which will then allow you to install ClockworkMod which will then allow you to flash su and root your current ROM.
Here is what I did:
1. Installed HTC fastboot drivers (download link was on Revolutionary documentation wiki).
2. Connected phone in Charge mode.
3. Ran Revolutionary. It crashed installing CWM Recovery.
4. Ran it again, said the phone was already S-OFF but let me try to flash the CWM Recovery again. This time it worked.
5. Downloaded the SU binary from that same documentation wiki page.
6. Rebooted and went into recovery (make sure that Fastboot is unchecked in the settings).
7. Flashed the SU binary. Phone is now rooted.
8. Downloaded and installed Busybox and ROM Manager.
9. Badda bing.
10. Badda boom.
Hope this helps!
only works on Gingerbread now!
So if I get a DInc 2 with 2.2, do I have to ota the thing to GB to use this?
Thanks...

Yes. The exploit only works on GB.
I am stuck at "Waiting for Device" after running the command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
Any ideas?
I attempted to do it on my own but i must of messed up half way where my computer wouldn't recognize my phone but i did get S-off but didn't get CWM on it and ended up just factory resetting. I was also wondering if I do root will I be able to switch back and forth from say CM7 to MIUI or back to stock and still have everything setup already?

Yes. ROM Manager gives you the option to make a backup of everything before it flashes the new ROM.
